wedding day: I had 6 bridesmaids: two of my three sisters, Jon’s sister, and three friends from dental school. We all got our hair done together at Master Design Salon on Wheelis Dr. We brought mimosas to the salon and they even gave us a bridal room to come in and out of. The ceremony was perfect! My dad played with his fabulous hand bell choir before he walked me down the aisle! I had my two precious nieces and adorable nephew in the wedding party. The wedding party took a party shuttle to the Botanic Gardens. Jon and my first dance was choreographed for us to the Beach Boy’s “God Only Knows.” We learned as much about team work and patience learning our dance as we did in the premarital counseling! And we pulled it off! Instead of doing a bouquet toss, we had a longevity dance, which Jon’s grandparents won after 63 years of marriage and counting! The longevity dance was the only time that I started to tear up! It was so meaningful to see all the couples who have stayed together through decades of marriage! Towards the end of the night, everyone was rocking out to Snozberry! Jon and I have been their fans for years! At 10pm, my parents surprised everyone with Elvis! And he was serving BBQ sliders. The night ended with the Purdue Fight Song, for all the Purdue swimmers we had there!

wedding details: Jon and I were engaged for just under one year. My mom was the primary wedding planner. She used library books and kept a notebook. She used word of mouth and went to bridal shows (including, The Pink Bridal Show)! It was important to me to have a live band and to be near down town for our visitors to experience Memphis! The most important thing to us was the awesome turnout of family and friends: our grandparents, all of my aunts and uncles and most of our cousins and many high school and college friends made it!

Everyone had trouble envisioning the multi colored flowers with the eggplant bridesmaid dresses, but in the end it met our goal of elegant, sophisticated, but FUN! Because we had guests from TWENTY-TWO states and Mexico, we wanted to show our guests special appreciation for making the trip. Tables were assigned by state with state silhouettes with the floral centerpieces. Everyone love the grooms cake: a model of the Purdue swim pool with 3 little fondant swimmers! Everyone raved about our food! We had food stations: the entree station included crab cakes and shrimp and grits. We had a greek 7 layer dip in honor of my Greek uncle Harry. The caesar teasers represented my go-to dish.

lOve stORy: We met in Rider Bike Shop May 25, 2010. I was on the square doing a photo shoot for my boutique, Paisley. We decided we needed to borrow one of Mr. Rider’s vintage looking bikes for the shoot, I went over to ask Walt and he was on the phone. Cannon was in the bike shop getting his road bike fixed for an upcoming triathlon. We started talking, he claims he didn’t ask me out on the spot because he thought I was too young, despite the fact he knew I owned the boutique next door. After I left he asked Mr. Rider how old I was, and Walt said I was engaged. Cannon then decided to find me on Facebook, he then found out I was newly 20 and single. He messaged me, we started talking, he then went out of town and we texted the whole time. He came home, and we met each other’s parents...we looked at rings 2 weeks later, and 2 years later to the date we were married.

I was having dinner at Stix with my girlfriends from work, we were finishing up dinner when the waiter brought us a huge cookie cake from Great American Cookie (which is my favorite!!) My friend opened the cake which had a huge diamond ring with the icing. I then saw a huge camera come out from behind the corner and Cannon, all dressed up. He gave me a super sentimental speech, which I would barely remember from my hysterical tears. Everyone in the restaurant cheered, I said yes! We then ran to Walmart to tell my parents who were in the checkout lane! Followed by a small party at his parents house with champagne. I was such a happy and emotional night! I was so excited I was in tears the whole evening!

wedding details: My vision for my wedding was rustic elegance. I brought this to life by having my venue be Heartwood Hall. The barn was the perfect setting for my reception with her burlap walls, reclaimed wood floors and twig chandeliers. We used gorgeous hydrangeas and peony’s which added such an elegance. On the tables we have tall iron candle holders with huge silk bows on them. I love mixing the girly with the masculine, the decor really reflected both of our personalities. Our DIY projects were, my mom made this banner above our candy bar which read “love is sweet”, my aunt Annie and my mom also made our cake and cupcakes, I also sang a duet with my dad at the reception, and friend of my mom, Patti also made our invitations and the programs, which we worked with her to design. My wedding colors were very neutral, the flowers were pale blues, greens and pinks. My bridesmaids dresses were very pale nude pink, and the men wore grey suits with pastel printed ties. I wanted something “happy” but I didn’t want the colors to be over the top.

My mother also made my wedding dress, which was so special. We worked for about a year and a half picking out designs and fabrics. It was such a special thing for us to do while I was engaged. It turned out better than I could have ever imagined and I love knowing I will be the only girl in the world to wear my dress.

Debunked! Is wedding advice coming at you from every angle? Determine what’s fact and what’s fiction by debunking these common wedding myths.

IT’S NOT REALLY A WEDDING IF YOU DON’T FOLLOW TRADITION.

The first person to buck tradition and wear white was Queen Victoria (that’s right...brides have not always worn white). This is now taken for granted as standard attire as is a wedding cake, first dance, bouquet toss and something blue. A wedding simply requires an officiant, license and witness. The celebration of said wedding should be an expression of the couple’s personalities, and sometimes breaking the rules leads to new traditions that are a better fit than those of past generations.

Thank-you notes can be sent by email. While email is the preferred way of communication for many a message, it is generally frowned upon when thanking your wedding guests. Hand written thank-you notes are far from outdated, and though tedious to a generation of texters, it must be done. Appreciate this dying art, and take the time to communicate as your grandparents would. Years later, a friend will dig out your hand written note, carefully saved. not your email.

the bride Can onlY be GiVen awaY bY her Father. This myth dates back to the days of old, when daughters were literal property of their fathers, and a wedding was merely a business deal for dad to expand his fortunes through the sale of his daughter. While the tradition still sticks to this day, i doubt very much that modern brides would describe themselves as part of dad’s estate. Your aisle escort should be a person that played a significant and supportive role in your path to finding true love.

The Bride’s parents pay for wedding and reception; groom’s parents pay for rehearsal dinner. Wouldn’t it be nice if Mom and dad still footed the bill? not so with modern weddings. This myth goes out the window, as at least a third of wedding costs are now covered by the couple themselves. Families today are pooling their resources and then, together, determining how funds are spent for all related events.

5 WEDDING LUCK (AND MARRIAGE) DEPENDS ON A SIXPENCE, SPIDERS AND SUPERSTITIONS.

Here’s the thing about luck... it all depends on the belief that wearing a certain color, carrying a token or changing your behavior will shift future events to their preferred outcome. Luck is mostly used as a way to counter those things completely out of our control and has often been a way of explaining the unexplained. if only making it through the first year of marriage was as easy as saving the top tier of your cake. Make your own luck with careful planning, professional vendors and a positive attitude.

Page 19: Memphis Pink Bride Magazine 2012

Vendors will always give a discount if you ask. Wedding vendors are not Mexican bazaars where you haggle the best possible deal. While a vendor may run a promotion, expecting to get a discount because you’re a bride is like expecting your doctor to run a special because you’re a patient. This doesn’t make long-term business sense. instead, plan to attend a local bridal show for show-only specials or giveaways, and be honest about your budget and vision with wedding vendors. Professionals will work with brides to find creative ways to stretch your buck and meet their bottom line.

If you can’t foot the bar bill, offer a cash bar.

cash bars are T-A-c-K-Y... as well as anything else on your wedding day that require your guests to pony up cash. Remember these are the same dearly loved friends and family that bought a special outfit, traveled across the country, paid for a hotel room and bought you a gift for your wedding. during the wedding day, guests’ wallets should stay in back pockets and purses. Tactful solution: if you are set on offering liquor at your wedding but fear the cost, consider a limited bar with only wine and beer (better yet keg beer, often costing half as much per serving as bottled).

Brides on a budget save big with DIY Projects. With the vastness of today’s World Wide Web, the likelihood of finding a bargain can make diY more costly than one thinks. This is even more apparent when your inner crafter is not well-matched to make diY magic (but Martha stewart made it look so easy!). And remember, time is money, even if it is your time. Be realistic about how much time will need to be dedicated to diY projects, particularly in the last few weeks leading up to wedding day (when the to-do list is never ending and you’d rather be with your family). if the budget is stretched thin, it might make more sense to skip it all together.

Wedding Day is the Bride’s Day.

While you and your groom are certainly the guests of honor, a bride with her sights set on making wedding day entirely about her is likely to be labeled a bridezilla. Weddings are as much about the happy couple and their new life together as it is a celebration for all the related family members. instead, find ways to celebrate your family or close friends and their traditions with your new love and the traditions in store for years to come. This ensures your guests feel part of a truly special event.

Your bridal party must have the same number of bridesmaids and groomsmen.

Today’s bride has thrown out all the rules when it comes to bridal parties. With your closest friends and family by your side on wedding day, trying to stay in the box of specific numbers or even genders just doesn’t work. nowadays, your maid of honor is now your man of honor, pooches are playing ring bearer and dancing to the altar is what makes wedding ceremonies personal, memorable and unique.

the PROPOsal: Austin and I’s favorite restaurant is the Majestic Grille downtown. We love going there and probably go once a month. Everyone there is so friendly and the food is delicious. So when Austin said that he wanted to go to Majestic one Friday night, I didn’t think anything about it. He had given me money to buy myself a new dress to wear, and I had a slight suspicion, but we had not looked at rings or even discussed them, so I figured he was just being thoughtful. We went to dinner and everything was going great. After we finished our meal, the waitress came and cleaned up our plates and Austin said that he was going to the restroom and would be back and then we could leave. When he came back, he sat down and said that he had something for me. I was so confused because there was nothing at the table. He stood up and came over to me, got down on one knee and proposed! I was so shocked I almost forgot to say yes! The waitress came over and brought us champagne and the whole restaurant clapped. It was the sweetest moment and I will cherish it forever!

wedding details: I knew that I wanted an outdoor wedding. I wanted something that brought out our personalities and that reflected our Southern roots. I also wanted it to be classic with a vintage feel. We knew we wanted a swing band and after we booked the venue that was the first thing we booked. We built our theme around that classic feel. I had seen Heartwood Hall on a photography blog and had bookmarked it on my computer for forever. When we got engaged, I knew that was the first place I wanted to go and look at it. I made an appointment that week and my mom, my Maid of Honor, and my mom’s best friend went and looked at Heartwood. The moment we pulled up it was perfect. It was absolutely beautiful and it was exactly what I wanted my wedding to be like. The barn where the ceremony was at was breathtaking. I knew that Austin would love its Southern, laid back charm and I knew our wedding would be here. That was the only venue that we looked at, and that next day we booked our wedding!

Heartwood Hall is so beautiful that it came to life on its own. Everything there is gorgeous and there wasn’t much that needed to be done to decorate because it was perfect.

My DIY project were our favors! I love s’mores, and I knew that I somehow wanted to incorporate them into our wedding. So we made prepackaged s’mores for our favors! We got tags and stamped them with a stamp that I had made that said “Sending you s’more love. Sarah and Austin, March 31, 2012.” Our wedding colors were coral, pale yellow, and ivory. I love coral and I knew I wanted that to be one of our wedding colors. When I found my bridesmaids’ pale yellow dresses at J. Crew, I knew that’s what I wanted to create the color palette around. Our flowers were coral with light yellow and lots of ivory. Holliday’s Flowers did a perfect job on our flowers. They were exactly what I wanted and the colors were impeccable and matched everything exactly.

lOve stORy: Chris and I met about a year before we started dating. One of my best friends was dating one of his best friends. She thought Chris and I would be perfect for each other. We hung out one night but then parted ways. We saw each other again about a year later at Memphis in May BBQ fest and were pretty much inseparable from then on.

Chris proposed to me at my favorite restaurant, Restaurant Iris. He had my best friend take me there for a “girls dinner” and came out at the end carrying dessert and a ring. I was in total shock!

wedding details: Chris and I were engaged for about 9 months. We had the absolute best wedding planner, Sheril Greenstein. We could not have done any of this without her! She was amazing. The most important thing about my wedding was flowers and entertainment. I love big, beautiful flowers and wanted everyone to have a great time, of course.

For as long as I can remember I’ve always wanted a winter wedding. I have always loved winter time and the possibility of snow! The theme was winter wonderland and my colors were silver and dark purple. The votives that hung from the chuppah were representative of snow flakes and the background at the ceremony was all white.

wedding day: Our wedding day was hectic, but so much fun. We danced the entire night and all the guests got really into dancing as well! I didn’t cry at the ceremony. but my mother couldn’t stop! I accidentally said “I do” too soon. Typical moment for anyone that knows me well. I wouldn’t have changed anything about our wedding. Everything was perfect from the food to the decor!

Don’t miss the next Memphis Pink Bridal Show!Visit www.ThePinkBride.com for more details.

to Make the Most of Bridal ShowsTOP WAYS7

You’re engaged, and now it is time to start planning… With so many things to see and vendors to talk to, wedding shows can be overwhelming and feel a bit like, well, the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Savvy brides see through the chaos and make the

most of what bridal shows have to offer by way of inspiration, advice and vendor giveaways. With these 7 tips, you can too!

• 1 •Come prepared. The boy scouts were on to something here… Make sure you have the essentials. Have a pen to take notes and sign up for all the wedding day give-aways. Better yet, pre-print mailing labels with your name, phone number, email and wedding date to save a ton of time. Also, remember to bring your camera to capture all the wedding inspiration on display… vendors are putting their best decorating foot forward and you will want to remember everything you saw.

• 2 •Don’t eat (a lot!) before you come. Weddings have food, and so do wedding shows. Caterers and bakers use this opportunity to showcase great samples of their food, so hold off on lunch & come hungry!

• 3 •Leave the little ones at home. Children have small attention spans and even with all the cake samples will quickly lose interest becoming dead weight. It is distracting to have fussy or bored children (or adults!) in your party while you are walking the show floor and trying to talk with vendors. Think carefully about who will join you on wedding show day.

• 4 •Do your homework. It’s worthwhile to familiarize yourself with the services you are still seeking, what questions to ask and who is exhibiting at the show. This helps to maximize the time you have at each booth which can sometimes be limited with busy shows and popular vendors. Having other details, such as your wedding date or budget mapped out, are also helpful… You don’t want to fall in love with a vendor only to find out that they are booked on your wedding date or out of your price range.

• 5 •Come ready to make a deal. Many of the vendors will offer show-only discounts and specials for brides ready to book.  If you have done your research and have your checkbook in hand, the savings will add up fast.  Keep in mind that vendors are not as busy during the fashion show, so if you have your dress, use this time to talk one-on-one.

• 6 •These boots are made for comfort. Remember the show floor is big with lots of walking, so leave the heels for later that night and wear comfy shoes!

• 7 •FREE tickets! Many local vendors are given free show tickets to hand out to perspective brides that they would like to personally invite to the show. If you plan to set up meetings with vendors before the show, make sure to ask if they will have a booth, and you just may get free tickets.

lOve stORy: The first time Hunter and I met was at my surprise 18th birthday party that my cousin threw for me. We didn’t meet again until five years later. At the time I was living in San Francisco and I was visiting my parents in Memphis. The same cousin invited me to her lake house for the weekend where Hunter and I knew we had discovered something special. A week later I returned to San Francisco. Less than 12 hours after I arrived Hunter called me to tell me he was going to catch a flight to California and drive me back to Memphis to be with him. I immediately packed up my car and put in my notice. Our cross country trip lead us to visiting friends in Colorado and Dallas where we attended a wedding. A year and a half later, on Christmas morning Hunter told me he had a surprise for me and we headed downtown. As we took the elevator to the roof top of the Peabody I realized what was about to happen and started to cry. When we got to the roof, I don’t even remember what he said but I know I said “of course!”.

wedding Planning: I definitely learned that the first thing you need to do is pick a date and set a budget. Once you have those, decide what your priorities are. Hunter and I both decided that we wanted our guests to enjoy themselves so we kept the evening very casual and fun.

I am a chef instructor, so naturally quality food was a priority for me. Chef Jimmy Gentry of Paradox Catering and Consulting is a talented chef with a real eye for artful presentation and event production. My guests still mention how friendly and efficient the staff was.

“The Dress” was something I had thought about since I was a little girl. I didn’t want to look like I was going to prom or trying to be Cinderella(this was a big challenge), so I ended up with three different dresses. Thank goodness for Barefoot Bride a local bridal consignment shop.

The wedding was at the home of Charles and Jean Tuggle. We really wanted to capture every memory with candid and artful photographs so we used Maggie McLendon who is amazing at utilizing natural light. Her pictures truly reflect the mood of the event.

My friends and family also contributed a lot during the process using their individual talents. My Aunt, Mia Condon, coordinated the day of the event keeping us organized. Andrew Clark, a family friend, played beautiful classical music for the ceremony. Our huge wedding party hung all of the lanterns before the event. My really good friend from high school, Lucy Hadskey, did an amazing job taming my curls. I also could of asked for someone better to marry us, my dear cousin, Charlie Davis.

Your wedding day is about celebrating the beginning of an exciting new chapter in your life, so be sure to wear the dress of your dreams for the occasion! Discover the best style suggestions for your body type here.

No matter what dress style you choose in the end, all that matters is how you feel in it. Keep an open mind to conflicting opinions, but do not let yourself lose focus in the midst of them. Your opinion matters most! Follow your professional’s suggestions as you try on different styles, and ultimately choose the dress you feel the most beautiful and confident in as you look in the mirror. Regardless of your body type, if you are happy and confident on your wedding day, you will be gorgeous!

Try a mermaid or trumpet silhouette. Both help you seem curvier and make your bust and hips look more proportioned. If you really enjoy the idea of a ball gown, try that too! It will capitalize on your small waist and create a more pronounced hip.

Find a dress with an open neckline – ideally a strapless sweetheart. Do not opt for sleeves or a cover over your arms. Look for a dress with ruching that comes to a point, as this separates the bust and the hip perfectly.

Look for a gown with a sweetheart neckline and ruching at the top. This creates volume where you need it most.

Play down your bust by avoiding straight necklines. Rather, choose a sweetheart neckline or a scooped neckline. Opt for a modified A-line dress with beads and detailing further down the dress to avoid drawing more attention up top.

Seek a design with minimal frills that accents your long lines. An Empire dress can do just that. The dress will pull in right at or just below your natural waist.

The fit and flair cut with a sweetheart neckline will be flattering on you. Keep in mind while shopping that a higher waist creates the illusion of a longer torso. Embellishments are great for this body type, but they should be small and clustered mainly at the top of the dress.

A gown with thick straps or a one-shoulder look will help pull the eye away from your hips. A flowing gown with a natural waist will also help conceal this area.

Seek out dresses with lots of ruching all over to create shape. A V-neck is slimming and draws the eye up, rather than across, too.

1. Alphabet Bridal Shower

Assign each guest a letter in the bride-to-be’s full (mar-ried!) name. Then, have the guests purchase items from her registry, wrap the gift, and decorate it with the letter they were assigned. As gifts arrive, spell out the bride’s name! Let her new monogram be your decorating inspi-ration. if guests are really creative, they can try to find a gift on her registry that corresponds with their letter. Guest favors could be hanging initial ornaments with the first initial of each guest’s name.

2. Around-the-House Shower

Assign each guest a room in the house to purchase an item for from her registry. decorations should be in the bride’s favorite color to accent her home. serve foods she loves! Guest favors could be little key necklaces.

3. Honeymoon Shower

encourage guests to purchase gifts for the bride and groom via their honeymoon registry. Alternatively, give guests the option of purchasing a gift that would cele-brate their honeymoon location, like flip-flops, sunglass-es, or signature drink mixes. Wrapping paper and deco-rations could follow the honeymoon destination theme! Guest favors could be a keychain with the destination theme – like a mini eiffel Tower or sand in a bottle.

4. Pajama Spa Shower

Have guests wear their pajamas, put a bunch of pillows on the floor, and shower the bride-to-be with spa-re-lated items! Then put on a good chick flick and indulge in giving each other manicures, pedicures, and facials well into the evening while you snack on comfort foods. Guest favors could be nail polish in the bride’s wedding colors!

5. Stock the Pantry Shower

Guests can write their favorite recipes on cards and give to the bride along with gifts of non-perishable foods needed to prepare the recipe in a (reusable!) gift basket. Alternatively, guests can give an appliance used in the dish’s creation. Another favorite way of conducting this shower is to have guests prepare each dish to bring to the shower for everyone to eat! Guest favors could be cute cookie-cutters or mini whisks.

wedding details: We were engaged for just over 11 months. We did not hire a planner, but the ceremony was all coordinated through the fabulous people at Grace-St. Lukes and the reception was led by David Branch and his colleague, Chris. I relied heavily on their guidance, as well as wedding blogs, advice from friends, and Emily Post.

Our parents were huge in the planning and execution of the wedding weekend, as were our friends. A few got together and threw us a fantastic party at the Green Beetle to kick off the wedding weekend, bringing together tons of college and local friends.

The most important thing about the wedding was that it was a fun event for everyone and that it really reflected both of our personalities.

We had just under 12 months to plan the wedding - and my parents live 14 hours away, so it took a great deal of emailing, phone calling, and very scheduled visits. Both my mother and Chris’ mother were so organized and so supportive of the feel we wanted for the wedding that I never felt as stressed as I had been warned about.

Chris and I were very set on just a few things - 1. That was a Memphis-y wedding, 2. It focused on having fun and being with those we loved, and 3. It be both classic and laid-back. Chris was so laid-back about decisions and did everything he could to make life easy. The best part for both of us was absolutely the Cake tasting!

Our colors were yellow and green, with a grassy green being the predominant one for the bridal party. Our wedding cake topper was the cake topper used at Chris’ grandparents wedding.

lOve stORy: We actually met online. I had moved to Indianapolis 3 years before and sadly discovered that the average age for marriage was EARLY twenties. I finally decided to give online dating a try. Ironically, one of my best friends matched with Kevin first. When I read his profile, I told her he should have matched with me before he matched with her!! A month or two later when she was happily dating her now husband, I asked if she cared if I talked to “the fire fighter.” We hit it off right away and began dating… right after I had signed a contract back in TN! We dated and broke up a million times before he finally realized he was crazy not to keep me! :)

wedding details: Kevin and I knew we wanted to have a somewhat rustic and eclectic style for our wedding. Spring Creek Ranch was the perfect setting with its beautiful red timber and expansive glass walls. We used a lot of our own odds and ends for decorations… old wooden crates, blue Ball jars, old windows, birdhouses... I also wanted to make sure that Jesus’ presence in our marriage ceremony was front and center, so I bought 10-12 crosses that we placed on old wooden doors for our ceremony backdrop. We wanted to spend less time sitting at tables and more time dancing and visiting, so we opted for food stations without a formal sit down dinner. I also wanted to showcase Southern style food to Kevin’s “Yankee” family and friends. CFY Catering did an amazing job with items like shrimp and grits, fried okra, and pimento cheese sandwiches. Our friends still rave about the food! Party Planet had the crowd dancing and singing all night. They even had Kevin sing to me! And we couldn’t have been happier with our photographers. They were easy to be around and open to our ideas, but they also knew what shots they wanted and were very creative. Our photos turned out absolutely beautiful.

Kevin and I had decided that we didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a vehicle to leave the reception. I phoned a friend to see if she knew of any interesting or old vehicles we might be able to borrow. Imagine my excitement when she suggested an old fire engine! I had the hardest time keeping it a secret from Kevin, but I managed. After we braved the pouring rain to make it into the fire engine, he asked “What now?” He had no idea we were riding it all the way to the hotel!

Make sure your man looks just as stunning as you do on your wedding day! Read on for style tips for each body type.

reaDer Q&a:Local grooms ask formalwear questions!

Q : “some jackets have so many buttons. do i have to button them all?” evan - Knoxville, tn

a : Buttoning only the top button of your jacket is considered appropriate.

Q : “what button count works best?” alex - Oak Ridge, tn

a : Generally, jackets with one button work best with bulkier physiques, two buttons look good on average body types, and two or more buttons work for taller people.

Q : “does it matter who does the alterations on my tuxedo or suit?” Carl - Farragut, tn

a : Absolutely. Similar to having a wedding dress altered, not having a professional alter a tuxedo or suit can literally butcher the final product. Choose a reputable shop for your wedding day needs!

Q : “how do i know the difference between a tuxedo and a suit?” Julius - Knoxville, tn

a : A tuxedo will have the presence of satin on the lapels, buttons, pockets, and in a stripe down the pant leg. A suit does not have satin components and normally has plastic buttons.

You can wear just about any style, but be aware of the lengths of jacket sleeves and pant legs. The shoulder pads in your jacket will add bulk without looking too boxy.

Again, you can wear any style! Always watch the length on your jacket sleeves and pant legs.

if you are largest around your midsection, move away from cummerbunds, which draw attention to this area. consider the more popular option instead – a vest! Go for a one-button jacket, and streamline your look by avoiding thick, layered materials. choose a long tie rather than bow tie as well.

Ask your tuxedo specialist about the “fitted look,” which will highlight your trim physique, while the shoulder pads in the jacket will add just enough bulk to your look.

Any style in any color will work for this physique. The most popular currently is the two-button notch lapel tuxedo in black.

Again, if you are largest around the middle, avoid the cummerbund. A vest will draw the eye up, rather than to any bulk you may have in the midsection. A one-button jacket works for this body type. Long ties work best for this frame, rather than bow ties.

Avoid styles that seem to “hang” on your frame, and look for jackets with two or three buttons that begin lower, rather than higher. Your tuxedo specialist will tailor it to your physique so that you look your best.

Two low-sitting buttons on a jacket and a vest will elongate your frame.

do not go for thick fabrics that add to your size. Look for a jacket with one button that sits low. Opt out of the cummerbund and choose a vest instead. This makes you seem taller and slimmer. Opt for a long tie, rather than bow tie.

lOve stORy: Our love story began with my aunt, Bharati Bhakta, from California. She called me and said, “I have the perfect guy for you... his personality is just like your dad’s.” I knew that he might be the one. After exchanging pictures and talking long hours on the phone, we finally had our date weekend in Kansas City, MO. From that memorable weekend, we have continued this loving journey. We are meant for each other cause Sarjan is understanding and caring, but also has a great personality. His silliness and my goofiness is one of many reasons we are each other’s soul mates. Sarjan came to Memphis for Thanksgiving 2011 and in front of my family asked my parents for his approval and then popped the question. On one knee asked me “to marry him”. And of course I said “yes!”

wedding details: My vision of our wedding was to be contemporary and unique. My decorator was Occasions By Shangrila from Orlando, FL. My father’s side of the family is from Zimbabwe, so the night before the wedding the “Groom Welcoming,” I wanted to introduce some unique pieces with the safari theme. This was shown through centerpieces and the stage decor. The wedding was the traditional Hindu wedding colors of red, green and white. The decor was simple and elegant. I wanted the reception to be the bang of all events during our special weekend. My colors were teal blue and royal blue. The centerpieces were fresh blue orchids submerged in water in tall vases with lighting underneath. Also, I was very kin on my lighting effects for the reception. My DJ from Atlanta, GA was the one with the lighting effects. It was amazing!

wedding day: The excitement of this day started, when I was walking down the aisle with my parents. I just wanted to see Sarjan’s smile. The most memorable part of our wedding was the exchange of the garlands and rings as we became Mr. and Mrs. Bhakta. There were many laughs during family pictures. The most emotional part of our wedding was when I had to say my goodbye to my family and friends, which is called the vidai in the Hindu culture.

lOve stORy: Rusell and Abby both went to Emory University in Atlanta, GA, and while Russell was clerking in Atlanta during law school, he caught Abby’s eye, and she hasn’t been able to take them off him.

wedding day: It was absolutely wonderful seeing all of our friends and family at one place at one time. Obviously, Russell’s rendition of the “Call Me Maybe” dance was the highlight of the entire day.

wedding Planning: We were engaged for a year and a half. We ended up hiring a wedding planner, who was a huge help. The most important thing to us was that everyone had a good time.

We didn’t have a “vision” per se, but we wanted to make the day as fun as we possibly could, and I think we successfully handled that.

wedding adviCe: Try to make the planning process as painless on you as possible. a friend told us beforehand that he and his then fiance always tried to make it fun for every aspect - e.g., splitting a bottle of wine when making out the guest list (which obviously leads to inviting a bunch of random people, including bartendars).

cORTneY ViGLieTTi & dAVid cLeVeLAnd05.05.12the PROPOsal: David popped the question on my 25th birthday. We had gone to eat with my family at Happy Mexican and once we arrived at home we unloaded all my presents from the car and I had told David that I wanted to take a photograph of all my presents. As usual I was running around the house to make sure that everything looked perfect for my picture I was about to take. As I passed by David, I heard him say you are missing something and I went on to tell him that I had gotten everything out of the car and walked away quickly. Well I then entered the room again and David went on again to say that I was forgetting something and at that point I was getting a little louder in my tone of voice and I again said that “I HAD GOTTEN EVERYTHING OUT OF THE CAR” and then again I walked away quickly because I had to get something from our bedroom. I came back to the area that all my gifts were set up and there again David said to me you are forgetting something, well at this point I was about to really raise my voice, well before I could say something David had pulled out my wedding ring and he said you are forgetting this! And of course I went crazy and started crying and said yes. Well two years later we tied the knot on May 5, 2012

wedding details: We had family help with decorating but the whole wedding was planned by David and myself. We hired a day of the wedding coordinater, Michelle Hope.

I used an excel spreadsheet to have everything broken out line for line for our budget and to keep us aware of how much we spent. I made my own binder with tabs for each vendor i used for the wedding. I had a day of wedding itinerary that i mapped out in a word document that had a 15 minutes play by play of what and when was taking place.

The most important thing to me abouut our wedding was actually getting married and having all of our friends and family there.

My vision and theme was classy, fun and colorful for Cinco de Mayo, which may I add I am Italian, but Cinco de Mayo has always been my favorite holiday to celebrate.

I had an idea of the colors that I wanted to use because I went to a paint store to get paint colors, but it really came to life was when I found the fabric that I used to pull everything together like flower girl dresses, grooms tie, groomsmen and ring bearer vest . This was when everything came together. We made all the paper flowers that were used for the decorations. Our colors were l turquoise, magenta, lime green, coral, brown, and beige

lOve stORy: Dave and I met at a local bar after his friend dared him to come talk to me (proof that you can meet your soul mate at a bar!). As luck would have it, he was house-sitting for a mutual friend who lived down the street from me. We stayed up talking on the front porch for hours, and the rest was history. Our first date was at the Beauty Shop Restaurant 8 years ago, a place we still love to go for special occasions. To this day, we still never run out of things to talk about. We truly are best friends.

wedding details: Dave and I were engaged for about a year. The most important thing to us was to plan something that reflected our personal style... traveling, fishing, and exploring the great outdoors. After finding the Hawkesdene House by happenstance, we knew we had found the perfect place.

We wanted to make sure our wedding was relaxed enough so that we could live in the moment, and we are thankful to say we did just that! We were able to dine alongside our guests for an incredible meal, and then dance the night away.

The grounds at Hawkesdene are gorgeous, and the mountain backdrop was the icing on the cake. There was no need to over-style the wedding with all of the beautiful scenery surrounding us. Between graduating with my Masters in Nursing, and starting a new hospital job, I will admit most of the planning was done in the month leading up to our wedding. Dave and his dad made the wooden flower boxes that we used for our centerpieces. We are huge Memphis Tiger fans, so using Tiger Blue in our wedding was a must. We decided to use blue, pink, tan, and cobalt glassware. I also wanted to use burlap, lanterns, and wood stumps to reflect the natural elements of the mountains. The flower boxes were filled with stunning hot pink garden roses set in mason jars. Our wedding cake was a homemade strawberry cake with butter-cream frosting, decorated with burlap ribbon and pink roses. The staff at Hawkesdene made the event come together even better than we could have dreamed of.

wedding day: The wedding day could not have been more perfect. We had a small destination wedding with our closest family and friends, which gave us several days before to reminisce with our favorite people. The guys took Dave on a fishing trip to one of the creeks within the North Carolina mountains. I spent the morning assembling the centerpieces with my sisters and best friends. We listened to music, danced, and sipped champagne while getting ready in the Garden Cottage at the Hawkesdene House.

The ceremony was held on a covered bridge over a creek. A good friend of ours performed the wedding ceremony. He made us all laugh and cry at the same time. We then went to the top of the mountain to take our first pictures as husband and wife.

I cannot tell you how often I have heard these words from brides a month or two before their wedding. for whatever reason – be it number of attendants on the groom’s side, stress, or guilty association – some brides twist themselves in knots over which girls to choose for bridesmaids or (gasp!) the Maid of honor. In a haste to make everyone who thinks she should be part of your bridal party happy, you ask ladies you really do not know well. Before you know it, you have a small army of attendants you rarely see until just before the wedding. Not cool!

every decision you make about your attendants can have a resounding effect on the moods surrounding the festivities both before and during your wedding day. Keep the following quick tips in mind before popping the big question to your girls!

1. chooSe a frIeND or faMIly MeMBer Who WIll TaKe BeING your BrIDeSMaID SerIouSly.This means she will try to move her schedule around to help with your DIy tasks when she can, will listen to you rant about your wedding woes (but will stop you before you go over the edge!), and will even help plan your bridal shower. Then, she will actually commit to being at the shower. Make sure the lady you ask is tons of fun and would be willing to cut-up to relieve your stress - but she truly must be dependable, too. If someone you have in mind tends to rSVp to your get-togethers or parties and then doesn’t come, and you learn about the other party she went to instead via photos on facebook, she is likely not bridesmaid material…no matter how fun she can make a party (if she actually arrives).

2. chooSe aTTeNDaNTS you caN See yourSelf haVING STroNG frIeNDShIpS WITh WellINTo The fuTure.harsh as it sounds, asking ladies you do not expect to continue friendships with after you are married ultimately dates your

wedding. honor your closest friends and family with this role – not the girls in your best friend’s group with whom you rarely spoke.

3. you Do NoT haVe To haVe The SaMe NuMBer of aTTeNDaNTS oN BoTh SIDeS.So what if your groom has five guys, and you only chose four girls? It is really not that big of an issue. leave your number where it is if it means you might ask someone you will regret choosing later. Keep in mind that having more maids means more bouquets, more bridal party gifts, and more miscellaneous costs, too.

4. ScareD ThaT chooSING a MaID of hoNor WIll hurT SoMeoNe elSe’S feelINGS?Do not be. The other ladies should understand that it is not necessarily a game of favorites. (okay…maybe it is. Just a little.) If feelings do get hurt, let your other maids know that you chose your Moh for her planning and visionary abilities. you probably also chose her for her ability to nip drama in the bud before it starts, which is a must with almost any group of girls in a high-stress situation! The day is about you, and your Moh will be with you more than anyone else throughout the day. In other words, it is okay to have favorites here.

5. ThINK of The BoTToM lINe IN The eND!Getting married is one of the most exhilarating experiences of your life. cherish it with the ladies who have made your journey more meaningful because they have been a part of it!

When it comes to choosing your attendants, I always say to think before you ask. Sleep on it. chat with your future hubby about it. In the end, only pick the girls you are closest to. after all, if you are close to someone, you likely already know if she is “insane,” and you can save yourself the unpleasant surprise of finding out later!

chooSe your BRidesMaids wisely

This no-drama guide will help you quit stressing over which ladies to choose for your bridal party!“Why did I ever ask her to be a bridesmaid? She’s insane!”

wedding day: The wedding day was absolutely perfect! From the dress and the flowers, to the church, and the reception, it was truly an unforgettable day for both Kyle and I.

I have to say that the staff at Memphis National did a fabulous job hosting all of our guests. The food and the service were just perfect. Plus, Memphis National was very reasonable and easy to work with throughout the wedding planning months, which was why I was confident they would do a great job. It was the perfect venue: a great dining room overlooking the tent area outside along with a beautiful golf course and a small lake in the distance. I loved that part of our reception was inside, which was where the food, cake, and candy stand were located, while the dance floor and the band along with high rise tables were outside. There was a balcony outside as well, so our guests could stand and look out over the dance floor. That was another special touch to our venue! Having our reception at Memphis National was very special to me because it was a convenient location in relation to our church and also because it was something different to me. I wanted my wedding to be unique, and I definitely feel that the venue contributed to making our wedding a memorable night! I would highly recommend Memphis National Golf Club to any bride who is interested.

wedding details: We were engaged for 10 and a half months. The colors of my flowers were: champagne, cream, and peach with green hydrangeas mixed in. They were beautiful! Deedra Stone did a wonderful job! It was exactly what I had envisioned. My bridesmaid dresses were a beautiful light green color and they were floor length dresses. I was very pleased with how the flowers matched the dresses and with how beautiful the flowers looked in the church.

Oh, the thrill of online shopping. People’s thriftiness or tight budgets allow them to get lured in by the ultra-slashed prices on popular websites. But when it comes to shopping for a wedding gown online, christina Tompkins learned the risks the hard way when her wedding dress dreams turned into nightmares.

The Right One: My fiancé and i were engaged in september 2011, and we set a date for september 2 of the following year. i thought this would give me plenty of time to make wedding plans. i soon began to search for a wedding dress. After looking through a few magazines, i fell in love with an Allure couture dress that a bridal store close by actually carried. A little later, i was shopping online and i came across some other dresses that i’d seen in magazines at a fraction of the original cost. This made me curious to see if my dream dress was also available online at a discounted price.

The Wrong One: eventually, i found an online vendor who offered my dress—same exact picture from magazines, totally different price. At $235, my fiancé insisted that we take the chance and order it. so i submitted my order, but after a few weeks and no dress, i started to worry. i quickly assured myself and considered it a normal timeframe for a dress coming all the way from china. soon after, i came home to find a very small, thin package on my doorstep. inside, i found a dress nothing like the one i had fallen in love with weeks earlier. it was obvious that the dress was cheaply made. i immediately went to the bridal store where my dream dress was held and compared the two dresses. The elaborate, beaded bodice i admired on the original dress was replaced by one with gaudy, silver sequins. The original bottom was an intricate embroidery of hand-made flowers, while my online dress had white flowers actually safety-pinned onto the train! i was so shocked and heartbroken, but luckily i gave myself enough time for mishaps. i was going to try and make it a diY project; in fact, i tried to sew on sequins myself! in the end, i contacted the company in china and asked for my money back which was eventually, and luckily, refunded to me. i recently found another dress by Maggie sottero that i purchased—in the store this time!—without having to deal with hefty price tags or risky transactions!

Her Advice: if it’s too good to be true, it probably is. Beware of bidding websites that present your dream dress with the same photos but have a distinctly different price. You get what you pay for—cheap price, cheap dress. something as important as your wedding gown should be purchased in-store; you are able to have a concrete visual of what you are spending your money on. Go with the dress you give your heart to (even if your more frugal fiancé tries to convince you otherwise!). do not spoil it by trying to find a better deal because, more than likely, you won’t find one worthy of your purchase. Be wary of dresses made in a foreign country like china. Being so far away from the manufacturer is never a good thing, and you probably won’t get the detail you are hoping for. not all online wedding purchases are off-limits, though. i actually purchased my wedding shoes and several bridal party favors online with no hassle. For a bride whose dress is low on her wedding totem pole, she might not have to take as many precautions. However, all brides should do their homework before making such a costly purchase.

cOLLin sAWYeR & MATTHeW WRiGHT 05.05.12wedding details: We were engaged for 8 months. We knew Matt’s company was going to give him a promotion and an EXPAT assignment somewhere in Europe, but we didn’t know the time table. We had to to just pick a date and hope that everything would work out timing wise whenever his company announced when and where he was going for this assignment. Luckily, everything worked out perfectly. We found out in at the end of February that we were moving to the Netherlands. I worked for another month before moving back to Memphis the first week of April. While in Memphis, I had one month to focus on wedding plans & get everything we needed for our big move across the pond (our return trip from our honeymoon was to Amsterdam). That was a very stressful month but I got it all done, thanks to my amazing daddy & my mommy’s amazing friends. I couldn’t have done it without their help & support.

We wanted our wedding to be one big party with our family friends. We wanted to combine foods that were native to Memphis (bride’s hometown) & St. Louis (where the groom grew up). Immediately after our honeymoon we moved to Amsterdam for Matt’s job. So we also wanted to incorporate some Dutch themes as well, so we had photo booth and all the photo strips had dutch flags in the shape of hearts.

My mother past away 2yrs ago and it was important to me that we did something special to honor her memory. We dedicated our special day in her memory. At the beginning of the actual wedding ceremony we had my brother place a white rose in the chair next to my father to remind everyone that my mommy was there with us in spirit.

wedding day: Other than it being unseasonable hot, our big day was perfect. I was just ready to marry Matt and celebrate our big day with family friends. Everybody had an amazing time. The food was so good, I think it changed peoples’ lives. The chef at the Brooks Museum, Wally Joe, & his culinary team definitely delivered and exceeded our expectations by a long shot. The band, G3 (Gary Goin Group), was absolutely amazing. I highly recommend them to anyone planning any type of event. They had everyone on the dance floor the moment they started playing until the moment they stopped. People are still talking about how much they loved our wedding band. Our photographer, Christen Jones, did an amazing job capturing our special day. I was blown away by her and her work. I’m so glad we used her, because I couldn’t be happier with our wedding photos.

lOve stORy: Patrick and I met through our best friends Christine and Brad Fly. We were friends for years before we became a couple. The engagement came as a complete surprise. Patrick, Christine, Brad, and I went to dinner. They all knew Patrick was about to pop the question so they finished their meals in minutes. I took my time finishing my steak as they patiently watched and waited. As soon as the waitress took my plate Patrick stood up in the middle of the restaurant, asked everyone for their attention, and got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. During his speech I kept looking at Christine asking “is this real?” and she kept reminding me to look at Patrick. Without hesitation I said yes. After dinner came another surprise. Patrick invited fifty of our closest friends and family to come celebrate our engagement. He put a lot of effort into making the night perfect and he succeeded.

wedding Planning: Patrick and I were engaged for six months which in my opinion is plenty of time to plan. Our families were very helpful with the planning process. Our moms read books on wedding planning and kept me on track. They are planners; I am a procrastinator so I needed their guidance along the way. One of my bridesmaids, Maggie Morris, became my personal stylist. My matron of honor, Christine Fly, is very detailed oriented and doesn’t skip a beat. She would send me lists of things I needed to do or should have already done. Elise Ladley, another one of my bridesmaids, designed all of the flower arrangements with the help of her business partner Kayla Gray. Elise went early and stayed late to the rehearsal dinner, ceremony, and reception to ensure everything was setup correctly. My sister’s and maids of honor Lindsey and Kelsey Loebel along with my other bridesmaids Melissa Salentine, Lauren Draffin, Jamie Jordan, and Lauren Shipman were also willing to do anything they could to help. Friends and family are very important to Patrick and I. Their love and support means everything to us and we will never be able to thank them enough for all they did and continue to do.

Our wedding colors were peach, yellow, and gray. I love neutrals and wanted to keep it simple with a modern flair. My friend, Katie Betts, and I designed the invitations and Original Ink printed them. Patrick’s cousin, Carol O’Keefe, gave us a wonderful wedding gift, she created our thank you cards. She used our wedding colors and came up with four different designs, I love them all. I did not want to take on too many projects but I wanted to add a few personal touches to the reception décor. I painted “Once in a while, right in the middle of an ordinary life, Love gives you a Fairy Tale” on a large piece of wood and I had our parents, grandparents, and great grandparents wedding pictures displayed as well.

Six Steps to ChOOsing the wedding CaKe

always, always, always do cake tastings!A cake can look beautiful and still taste horrible. Taste each baker’s cake prior to placing a deposit!

look around at different styles and designs, and have an idea of how you want your cake to look before you meet with your baker to nail down a design.Have two or three ideas available to discuss, and see what his or her opinion is on the best style and design for your guest count.

Be aware of food allergies.do you or your future hubby have a food allergy of some sort? Be sure to tell your baker about any allergies or dietary restrictions you may have before going further.

Know how many guests are planning to attend.Once you have your guest count, your baker can tell you how many tiers your cake should have. if you want to save the top tier, you may need an additional or larger tier.

Choose the shape of each tier next or decide upon a design from step two.Your baker may provide multiple options for tier shapes if you would like to build a custom look, or you can begin discussing what you love about the designs you found.

Choose your cake flavors, fillings, and icing!Keep in mind that your baker may suggest using fondant for certain cake designs or outdoor weddings. This could change how much your cake costs as well as the way your cake tastes, so be aware of this before moving forward. Once that is settled, choose which flavor, filling, and icing combo is just perfect for you!

lOve stORy: I went to visit George in Atalnta for July Fourth weekend and on the plane had seen an ad for ziplining in Georgia, and thought that would be fun. The next day George surprised me and we went ziplining and on the last line the guide said remember to check yourself for ticks!! We got back to the car and George started jabbering on about how we were best friends and how he loved our adventures but I was focused on getting the car started and getting in air conditioning. Then it hit me about the ticks. I frantically started looking for ticks on me and then told him to spin around so I could check him. When I saw that we were good, I went to the passenger side, checked the air and was ready to go. I turned around and George was on the ground. I was in complete disbelief. I was like now? I’m hot, sweaty and have not heard a word that you were telling me. Afterwards, George took me to the W hotel downtown where I thought we were going to take a tour of the hotel. We took the elevator to the roof and I was thinking that they must have a rooftop terrace. I was on cloud nine so I was up for anything. We got to the roof and there was no roof top terrace. Instead we walked up to a helipad. A helicopter was approaching us and Geroge said do you want to get a picture. I was like “Yea!! What famous person is landing on the roof of the W?” The helicopter pilot got out and said my name and I could have fainted. We were not scheduled for a tour of the building but a tour of the city. George had originally planned to propose over the city lights that night but because of an Atlanta Braves game his entire plan for the day had been to be rescheduled. He wanted everything to be perfect. As we flew over the city, I was like this could not have been a better proposal. However, George had our entire weekend planned which included - World of Coke, Peachtree Road Race, Atlanta Braves game, etc.

wedding details: We were engaged for a little less than a year. For most of that time I lived out of town and my mother was a saint in helping me. We hired Mindy, the wedding planner, for the day before and day of the wedding. She was amazing. I did not have to worry about anything. On my wedding day I was able to focus on marrying my best friend and having a great time with friends and family.

I was a low-key and easy going bride. My two biggest concerns were that everyone had a great time and that I had great pictures to remember everything. Anything and everything else, I did not stress about. The vendors that I worked with were all professionals and the best in their class. I had no worries!
