WHO WE ARE...

We are 90 talented children (aged 9-16) who are passionate about choral singing in the picturesque Garden Route of South Africa.

Since our inception, in 1996, we have performed with some of the best choirs in the world and have been featured on South African radio and TV programmes on a regular basis!

As one of South Africa's foremost amateur regional children's choirs, our members have been carefully auditioned and selected from several primary and secondary schools from George, Knysna, Oudtshoorn and Mossel Bay, and are dedicated to being worthy ambassadors of music!

We rehearse every Friday (approximately 105 hrs per year), several Saturdays, and at least 9 days during school holidays, in George, under the auspices of musical director, Jan-Erik Swart, and a team of dedicated voice coaches, trainers, management members and parents.

Our singing is vibrant, clear and stirring, with a musical discipline extending far beyond our ages . Our choral sound is unique!

We are a division of the South Cape Music Academy, a non-profit, public benefit company, and are supported by a voluntary Parents' Association which strives to invest in our children’s vocal development and to provide the best musical performance experiences available.

Since our founding in 1996, we have received critical acclaim from a wide range of choral specialis ts and practitioners, from as far afield as Finland, Germany, Belgium, Russia, Canada and the USA.

We have undertaken 7 concert tours of Europe (1998, 2000, 2003, 2007, 2011, 2014, 2016) and have recorded 10 cds, one dvd, and several live concerts during our existence.

We are proud exponents of South African multicultural unity in choral music and society at large.

We have received several accolades for exceptional performances throughout our history:

2010: Winners of the Children’s Choir category - ATKV Animato Competition finals2013: Kanna winners for best musical production at the KKNK2014: Overall winners of the ATKV Animato Competition2014: World 1st place for the open category of the 6th World Choir Games - Riga, Latvia (3 gold awards)2016: 1st Place cum laude at the 64th European Music Festival for Young People

We perform between 20-30 times per year, and are taking South Africa by storm with our challenging repertoire, our "fresh, natural choral sound" and our "dynamic musical energy!"

ADDENDUM A: CODE OF CONDUCT – SCCC MEMBERS

I declare: (Please tick every block)

That it is an honour to be chosen to sing in the South Cape Children’s Choir (hereafter termed SCCC) and that membership is at least the equivalent of SWD colours and at most, the equivalent of Junior Protea/Springbok colours.

That during my membership I will act as an ambassador of choral music on behalf of my school, my city, the SCCC, the Western Cape Province and the Republic of South Africa.

That I understand that the SCCC expects me to support my local school choir, and that any lack of recognition by my school towards my achievements in the SCCC cannot be blamed upon the SCCC.

That I understand that the SCCC is run upon Christian principles of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, respect and faithfulness and that, even if I am not a Christian, I will respect the Christian ethos of the SCCC as it will respect my personal viewpoint.

That I will not discriminate against any race group, and will strive to know, understand and acknowledge all members of other races as being equal in stature.

That I commit to a membership of a minimum of two (2) years, and that I am required to give a term’s notice (3 months) before leaving the choir.

That, should I give notice of termination of membership, my school will be notified that I am no longer a member of the SCCC.

That I am aware that an annual awards evening takes place where my achievements are honoured with certificates, medals, trophies and accolades.

That I forfeit all awards, medals, certificates and accolades should I terminate my membership earlier than 3 months before the annual prizegiving event.

That, should I terminate my membership after returning from an international tour, I understand that I am undermining my fellow choir members and the SCCC, and will forfeit all benefits, accolades and membership recognition, and that my parents will be held financially liable for my replacement and all outstanding membership fees.

That I will conscientiously attend all practices, camps, rehearsals, workshops, concerts and activities arranged by the SCCC.

That, should I have an official school function, urgent family affairs, illness or unavoidable crisis, I will ensure that I will excuse myself timeously, via my parent/s by means of letter, e-mail, sms, doctor’s certificate or telephone call, and that I will strive to keep such absences to an absolute minimum (3 per year.)

That I can only receive the golden SCCC badge for my school blazer if I attend and complete the annual SCCC rehearsal camp and its orientation activities.

That I will uphold the good name and reputation of the SCCC both in public, among my fellow choir-members, my parents and my critics in order to promote the vision, mission and goals of the SCCC. (Fiduciary Responsibility)

That, should I be late for any event of the SCCC, I will urgently notify the relevant SCCC official of my dilemma, and excuse myself to the conductor upon arrival.

That, should I be required to leave any event of the SCCC before its end, my parent (not I) will notify the relevant SCCC official timeously thereof, in advance, supplying a valid reason for requesting to be excused.

That, during rehearsals, I will strive my utmost to learn all music parts, maintain my black file and take care of music manuscripts given to me, support my voice group and help struggling members of my group, if necessary.

Drink sufficient water to keep my voice hydrated.

That I will not share music issued by the SCCC to any school, group or individual without the permission of the conductor, and that I will hand back all music at the end of my membership.

That I will take care of my concert uniform and will hand it back at the end of my membership.

That, during rehearsals, I will not cause disruption by talking during or before singing, going to the toilets during the singing of a song, eating and using a cellphone, not applying the discipline of singing expected by the conductor, and not respecting my seniors.

That, during a rehearsal, should I require the use of the toilets, I must request this from the conductor.

That, during rehearsals, I will not damage property belonging to the venue of rehearsal, or the property of the SCCC, and will strive at all times to keep the venue neat and tidy.

Page 8: MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION FORM: 2017 · PDF file · 2016-11-11South Cape Children's Choir A division of ... that I will excuse myself timeously, via my parent/s by means of letter, e-mail,

That, during rehearsals, I will respect all officials, adults and seniors of the SCCC, greeting or acknowledging them courteously at all times, and offering my services to help tidy up, carry luggage, setting up or dismantling choir benches, or being of general assistance, if required.

That, should a concert be held at a venue requires transport, I will timeously arrange transport with my parents, or negotiate a lift with my fellow choir members, or, at worst, contact the relevant SCCC official to notify them that you are struggling with transport. Absence without excuse at a concert is an offence which is a breach of agreement.

That, should I be bullied or treated badly by any member of the SCCC, I will report my dilemma to any official of the SCCC, in order to solve such a dilemma.

That, no matter what my seniority in the SCCC is, I will treat all members (junior or senior) with the same respect as a professional artist, and will not disrespect such a person, but will strive at all times to assist such a person to become the best chorister he/she can become.

That, should I, before, during or after a concert, reflect an image of unprofessional behaviour, relating to my uniform, cleanliness, personal hygiene, neatness of hair, use of language, or lack of stage etiquette, I am liable to undergo a disciplinary hearing which can lead to expulsion.

That, during a concert, I am not to sit in the audience while using a cellphone, and may not take my cellphone onstage with me under any circumstances.

That, during camps, tours or any event of the SCCC, I may not exhibit intimate fraternization with other choir members, enter the rooms of members of the opposite sex, indulge in use of drugs, alcohol, or any activity that brings the good name of the SCCC into disrepute. I understand that such behaviour can lead to my immediate expulsion.

That any theft of other members’ money, cellphones, items of property, or any property of the SCCC will lead to my immediate expulsion.

I, (Member’s name and surname) ___________________________________________________

hereby affirm that I have read the code of conduct for members and commit myself to adhering to them fully and

conscientiously.

ADDENDUM B: PROTOCOLS & GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS

1. The South Cape Children’s Choir is a division of the South Cape Music Academy Non-Profit Company Reg: 2014/177738/08. As a private company with directors that is run under the S.A. Companies Act, it is not required to report to parents, or to obtain parental permission for any project, expenditure or business activity. Parents may direct queries, complaints, criticism etc. to the board of directors in writing.

2. New members of the South Cape Children’s Choir usually join for a fixed period of two (2) years after which they renew their membership annually. Resignation from the Choir must be done 3 months in advance, or after consultation with the directors regarding special circumstances.

3. The Director of Music reserves the right at all times to remove, substitute or place on reserve, any member of the South Cape Children’s Choir who is not totally ready for performance, according to the judgement of the Director of Music. Members who have not attended rehearsals and workshops for a specific concert cannot perform in concerts until they have made arrangements with the Director of Music for catch-up rehearsals.

4. Concert-readiness of a member is determined according to a) how well his/her voice blends in with other members of

his/her group, b) how well he/she has practised a voice part, c) whether he/she has the necessary stage discipline, conduct, hehaviour and experience, and d) whether he/she can execute the choreography of a piece correctly, and as part of the group.

5. The board of directors reserves the right at all times to terminate the membership of members who are guilty of bringing

the good reputation of the SCCC into question, by means of poor behaviour, slander, criminal acts or breaking fiduciary responsibility. Parents will be notified and will attend a disciplinary hearing process in the above regard.

6. Parents are not permitted to attend rehearsals or workshops until the last 30 minutes of each rehearsal after which they

are welcome to attend, unless they are working for the SCCC during the rehearsal. Parents may not intervene or communicate with the Director of Music while he is in rehearsal.

7. Parents should form lift clubs if/where possible, to ensure that travel costs are kept minimal.

8. Communication between parents and the SCCC is maintained by monthly newsletters, weekly (repliable) bulk sms

messages, WhatsApp broadcasts and member WhatsApps. All communication is also available on the members’ information page of the www.sccchoir.co.za website.

9. Parents must notify the SCCC with a valid reason should their child be late, be leaving early or cannot attend a rehearsal,

workshop, camp or concert. Members who are unable to sing, must still attempt to attend the rehearsal. Members should generally not miss more than 3 rehearsals per year.

10. Parents are held legally liable for all uniform, clothing and membership fees, for which they are responsible, and any

other costs to which they agree. Failure to settle outstanding costs will lead to parents being handed over to a collection agency leading to a poor credit rating and legal costs. Parents are requested to communicate timeously with the Finance Director should they experience financial difficulties prior or during their child’s involvement in the SCCC before running up an account which endangers the operations of the SCCC.

11. Parents with two children in the choir are given 50% discount in membership fees for each year.

12. The SCCC expects beginner members who have no musical background, to undergo training in Trinity College London

Theory Grade 1, offered by SCCC, and to complete such an exam within the first two years of membership. The SCCC arranges the fees, exam application and exam centre with parents.

13. From time to time, the SCCC undertakes regional and international tours which are voluntary. It is advisable that parents

open a tour bank account and put away a minimal amount per month to cover any future tour costs.

Page 12: MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION FORM: 2017 · PDF file · 2016-11-11South Cape Children's Choir A division of ... that I will excuse myself timeously, via my parent/s by means of letter, e-mail,

14. Sometimes, parents wish to accompany a tour as a paying member or supporter. In such cases parents may not interfere in the management of children, may not remove their children from the choir daily programme and must follow the itinerary as laid out.

15. Should parents decide to drive to the destination with their children on their own, they remain responsible for any transport

costs, accommodation and food as costed for the entire group during the tour, in order to keep costs as low as possible. Members brought by parents on a tour must still attend all rehearsals, concerts, activities and motivational preparation as part of the itinerary.

16. Because the SCCC is hosted on overseas tours, thereby saving money, it is required that our parents host visiting choirs

at least twice a year. Two choristers minimum may be allocated to you for an overnight stay where a supper, accommodation, breakfast and delivery to a bus pickup point may be required. Parents who host are amazed at the cultural exchange that takes place during such a visit.

17. Parents are invited to add value to the South Cape Children’s Choir by joining a voluntary Parents’ Service Association,

chaired by the Choir Manager. The following subcommittees are required:

a. Fundraising, Networking and Marketing b. Logistics (Rehearsals, camps, concerts and regional tours) c. Transport and lift clubs per town/city/school d. Food and refreshment sales e. Ticket sales f. Project Management g. Public Relations for participating schools, donor companies etc. h. Poster advertising in businesses, shops, etc. i. Photography and Videography j.
