sons waited too long: push for inquestsMELTON

e parents of two Melton men who died last year a er waiting for ambulances have called for full inquests into their deaths.

Steve and Jo Gibbs – whose son Matthew, 23, waited 16 minutes for an ambulance a er going in to cardiac arrest on October 8 – and Julie Wilson – whose son Brodie, 18, waited 27 minutes for an ambulance to come from Sunbury a er having an asthma attack on June 29 – made the plea at the opening of a new ambulance station on Friday.

e parents confronted Health Minister David Davis and Ambulance Victoria chief executive Greg Sassella , demanding answers.

“We need a full coronial inquest into the way the whole organisation has conducted itself,” Mr Gibbs said. “It’s appalling. We have su ered great pain in the way they have conducted themselves in this investigation. ey need to be accountable and there needs to be someone independent looking into it.’’

Ms Wilson said the new station was only a temporary solution and did not address the ‘‘real issues’’ that exist in the ambulance service. “ e ambulance service is in crisis, the hospital system is in crisis and they are not xing what needs to be xed,’’ she said.

“ e key performance indicator is 15 minutes, and to me even that’s too long. My son waited 27 minutes.

“Personally, I’ve had David Davis come to my home and sit and apologise to me for what happened to my son, but it’s only words.

“He has told me that there is a truckload of money, but resources and money aren’t the problem. en x the system and pay the paramedics what they deserve to be paid.”

Late last year, paramedics said they were not ready to accept a 12 per cent pay rise o ered over three years because the state government was trying to introduce ‘‘unacceptable’’ changes, including replacing them with less trained rst-aiders in rural locations.

Mr Davis said the government had moved to put necessary resources in place in Melton.

“I’ve met with Brodie’s mum and spent some time with her ... this is a very complex case,’’ he said.

“In the case of Matthew, the response time was 16 minutes and the government

target is 90 per cent [response] within 15 minutes.

‘‘I understand there was signi cant intervention earlier and the triple-0 o cer talked a number of bystanders through CPR, and there was also a de brillation administrated at about six minutes.

“I think that may be a case where the system worked well in terms of time and intervention, but sometimes with the very best will in the world and the most-skilled paramedics the results are not what I or the families want.” \

new station ‘not the answer’

Melton paramedics say while the opening of a new ambulance station is welcome, it’s only covering up greater issues.

More than 25 paramedics from Melton and surrounding areas used Friday’s ceremony to protest working conditions.

“ e opening of this branch is being ticketed as a big item for the town, but literally it does not represent an increase of services for Melton and the greater Moorabool community,’’ paramedic Aaron Riding said.

‘‘Our workload is increasing at a much faster rate than our resourcing. We are in the middle of our enterprise agreement and the government and our management are not showing support.

‘‘We are here to say it’s a smoke and mirrors campaign to cover up some of the greater issues.”

Mr Riding said local services were not keeping up with demand. “Four-hundred-and-sixty- ve new paramedics have been put on [across the state], but 390 have le in the same timeframe.

“At this time there are no more cars in Melton than there were a year ago, and in that time we’ve had multiple cases where they haven’t had ambulances available to them and lost lives as a result.

“ [Mr Davis] says he’s putting additional cars on, but they are not being utilised properly and there’s still times in Bacchus and Melton when there is no ambulance service available.

‘‘We are seeking bipartisan support to x these issues and look a er the welfare of paramedics.’’ \ TM

Melton’s new ambulance station will provide better support for local paramedics, according to Health Minister David Davis.

“Not only is it worth knowing that physical infrastructure is coming in the form of a new branch, there has also been an upgrade of night-time capacity last year and a capacity

more coverage, support for paramedicsupgrade in Bacchus Marsh,” Mr Davis said.

“Starting on Monday, [there will be] a new peak-period unit providing additional coverage during the day in this branch.”

e Melton branch will now have two 24-hour crews and one 12-hour crew.

e new station includes rest rooms, o ces,

a training room, lounge and a three-bay garage.

A memorial plaque for former Melton paramedic Peter Watson was also unveiled on Friday. Mr Watson, whose family was present for the ceremony, was a paramedic for 31 years. \ TM

fire kills the music, so band turns to crowd-fundingBACCHUS MARSH

Members of Bacchus Marsh band Hollow Everdaze have turned to crowd-funding in a bid to replace music equipment lost in a re at their Gisborne Road shed.

Two CFA trucks attended the February 7 blaze, which destroyed more than $10,000 of equipment housed in the shed.

e re was not suspicious. e shed was to be used on the cover of the

band’s upcoming album, I Will Not Fear. While the shed was insured, its contents

were not. e band’s four members hope the crowd-funding campaign will help them get back on their feet for the album’s July release.

ey’ve set a $6000 target to replace amps, a drum kit, keyboard, microphones and recording equipment.

“We’ve raised one-third of it already, and we’re hoping we can rebuild our space eventually,” bass player Jackson Kay said.

Kay said he and the band’s members – Daniel Baulch, Tim Karmouche and Guy Louis Faletolu – spent 80 per cent of their time in the shed on his family property. “ I didn’t lose my childhood guitar like Dan did, so I wasn’t as heartbroken, but we’ve spent so much time there so it’s been pretty high stress.” \ PM

Melton leads the way as child immunisation is urgedHEALTH

New gures reveal Melton has the highest proportion of fully-immunised ve-year-olds in Melbourne’s outer west.

A state government report card released last week showed 93 per cent of Victorian children were immunised by the time they started school this year. It wants to increase this gure to 95 per cent by 2015.

e gures showed that 94.34 per cent of Melton ve-year-olds had been fully

immunised is the best protection,’’ he said. Melton West mother Tasha David says

parents deserve the right to choose whether they vaccinate their children.

e mother of eight, who is a member of an anti-immunisation group , vaccinated her six eldest

children but chose not to immunise the other two. Ms David said she

decided not to vaccinate her youngest children a er those who had been vaccinated

immunised. Only 90 per cent of Moorabool children were fully immunised before starting school, the lowest proportion in the outer west.

Health Minister David Davis said immunisation played a crucial role in public health.

“Starting school means that children are in contact with a larger number of people, which can expose them to a range of potentially dangerous diseases, so making sure they are fully

developed behavioural and learning problems. “It was a clear-cut decision for us. e two who are unvaccinated are completely healthy,’’ she said.

Australian Academy of Science president Professor Suzanne Cory urged parents to base their decisions on the best scienti c evidence . Professor Cory said studies had ruled out links between vaccinations and health problems such as autism. \

sports ground bid an ‘unnecessary fix’

MOORABOOL

Volunteer committees that oversee Moorabool’s most popular sports reserves are facing the axe in a move one former chairwoman has labelled “pathetic”.

A council o cers’ report has proposed that four committees of management be abolished and replaced with a recreation and leisure advisory committee including six community members.

Mayor Paul Tatchell said he was concerned that the Darley Park, Maddingley Park and Masons Lane committees of management currently had no chairman.

e Bacchus Marsh Racecourse and Recreation Reserve (BMRRR) committee, which has an elected chair, could also be cut.

“Something has to give – we can’t have these three committees running around without a leader,” Cr Tatchell said.

Former Maddingley Park committee chairwoman Margaret Scar said the ‘‘super committee’’ was being pushed so the council could streamline its dealings with the groups.

“It’s preventing the community from having any input into their own resources,” she said.

Former Darley Park committee chairman Lee Gleeson said the super committee would not work for the BMRRR.

“ It’s equine-based and their committee is full and functioning,” he said. “Don’t x what ain’t broke.”

Councillors this month deferred the decision until the next meeting.

Cr Tonia Dudzik said the report didn’t give the right impression.

“It comes across as we’re sassing them, but the intention was to assist them with maintenance issues, accounts and managing day-to-day stu ,’’ she said.

‘‘More consultation is de nitely needed.” \ PM

no gold, no worries as Lassila makes sporting historyWINTER OLYMPICS

It wasn’t the gold she had hoped for, but Diggers Rest’s Lydia Lassila still walked away a winner from the aerial skiing at the Sochi Olympics at the weekend.

e 2010 Olympic champion wasn’t able to repeat her heroics of four years ago , claiming bronze with 72.12 points. Alla Tsuper of

Belarus won gold with a score of 98.01 and China’s Mengtao Xu took silver with 83.50.

But Lassila became the rst woman to attempt and land a quad-twisting triple somersault in competition.

She only landed the move for the rst time in training last week.

“To come away with a medal is fantastic. I really just wanted to make it to the super nal

and try the quad-twisting triple somersault . “I watched my rst aerials competition

in 1999 at Mt Buller and that’s where I was deciding if I was going to join the [aerials] program.

“I just wanted to jump like a man, and 15 years later we are here and I’ve done the biggest trick ever done by a woman.” \

farmers fear coNtrol by corporationWATER

Moorabool farmers fear amended laws will give government-owned water corporations more control over water on their land.

Springbank farmer and Moorabool councillor Pat Toohey said that under dra changes to the Water Act, new stock and domestic entitlement clauses could allow corporations to dictate how much water farmers can use.

“Farmers have always made these management decisions themselves and we don’t think it’s appropriate for the government to tell people how much livestock they can have,” Cr Toohey said.

e dra act proposes to streamline the Water Act 1989 and Water Industry Act 1994, re ecting “contemporary practice in water management and government policy”.

“ e Moorabool River is bone dry in the top part, and the rulings for bulk entitlement have meant bodies like Central Highlands Water (CHW) have stressed this river and suck ed up its base ow,’’ Cr Toohey said.

“ e Moorabool River used to be able to generate its own ow. But since we’ve changed everything in the landscape, there’s no such thing as natural ow .”

Cr Tom Sullivan said he was disappointed that the closest meeting for the shire’s farmers was in Colac, more than an hour away.

“It was so disrespectful to Bacchus Marsh

irrigators. How could you not have a meeting in the Highlands area?” he said.

“ is is a signi cant piece of legislation and they’re wanting to wrap it up quickly. ”

Cr Sullivan said a panel appointed by Water Minister Peter Walsh to oversee the review was unrepresentative and Mr Walsh was looking for a particular outcome.

“It’s made up of people from the water corporations,” he said. “ ere’s no farmers, no local government members or anyone from

environmental groups.” Balliang East farmer Chris Sharkey said he doubted rural councils would be listened to.

“I think we can make our suggestions, but they just won’t listen,” he said.

e Water Minister’s spokesman did not respond before the Weekly went to print.

Submissions closed last Friday. e bill is expected to come before Parliament before September. \

BRIEFSfunds cut from family day care programMOORABOOL

A family day care program that has operated in Moorabool for 10 years has been axed by the council.

Bacchus Marsh ’s Bambi Hannah , a carer since 2002, said some of the program’s four educators were ‘‘quite shaken up’’and concerned about their next move.

‘‘We have single ladies paying mortgages and providing for young families,” she said.

Councillors last week made the decision to cease funding the service from June 30, citing di culty in recruiting new educators and increased costs to council .

Chief executive Rob Croxford said there were ve private family day care operators in the area that could make the transition smooth for all involved.

“We have made the decision that it isn’t a core role council needs to play when there are these other service providers in the market,” he said.

Federal gures released last week show the number of children attending family day care – where children are cared for in the carer’s home – has increased by 20 per cent in the past year. More than 30 per cent of the 142,000 who attend family day care are from regional and remote areas.

Ms Hannah looks a er nine children across four days.

“We do things from changing nappies to reading books; we drop and pick up kids from school or kinder and home .”

Mayor Paul Tatchell said it was a tough decision . “It wasn’t about the people who do the job; it was about how we manage that program against the private sector.”

e decision comes as Family Day Care

Australia calls on the federal government to increase funding to the early childhood sector, with more than 61 per cent of all family day care services operating in regional areas.

Mr Croxford said the savings would equate to about 1 per cent of its rates budget. ese funds will be used for other community programs and services. \

works-in-kind welcomedPLANNING

Key infrastructure and transport projects could be delivered sooner following changes to developer contributions in growth areas.

Planning Minister Matthew Guy last week released growth areas infrastructure contribution (GAIC) works-in-kind guidelines, which will allow developers to provide capital works instead of paying the GAIC in cash.

“As people move in to new suburbs, we want them to have immediate and easy access to connected roads and transport, employment opportunities and nearby community facilities,” Mr Guy said.

“ rough GAIC works-in-kind, we can deliver infrastructure alongside new housing, removing the costly need to acquire land later and ensuring better integration of public and private facilities.”

Previously, developers paid a cash contribution, which was later allocated to help fund works in growth areas.

Only one project across the growth areas has been completed under the old GAIC

guidelines: the recently opened tra c lights in Ferris Road, Melton.

Mr Guy said potential projects that could be funded under the new guidelines included “a road overpass in the western growth corridor”. When asked, Mr Guy’s o ce said that the project, if funded, would be in Wyndham.

Melton council’s planning and development general manager, Luke

Shannon, said residents would bene t from the fast-tracking of projects.

“ is will provide the community access to key

infrastructure early in the life of new developments,’’ he said.

‘‘ e announcement will also ensure that all GAIC contributions collected from development in the City of Melton will be spent on infrastructure in the municipality.

“Council will continue to work closely with the state government and key developers in advocating for the early provision of key state infrastructure for the bene t of the municipality.” \

Winning Country Club feelingWhen Ann and Allen Moloney visited Country Club Villages last December, they entered a competition run by the villages in conjunction with Odyssey Travel. The couple’s winning entry, which was for retirees to describe their dream home, landed them the fi rst prize – a free holiday to Tasmania to enjoy the Hobart heritage homes and gardens tour, valued at $3500.

Odyssey Travel – a not-for-profi t business that specialises

in arranging unique educational tours for seniors – arranged the holiday package, and Country Club Villages promoted the competition. Retirees could participate by visiting one of their villages, including Bellbrook Gardens Village in Bacchus Marsh.

The Moloneys – who admit it’s not the fi rst competition they’ve won – are among many Australians who agree the lifestyle offered in a retirement village has plenty of appeal. For an active retiree, a good retirement village offers them the option to do what they enjoy – either within the village or out and about – and that’s what Country Club Villages aims to provide.

So, whether village residents are travelling to Tasmania for a few days like the Moloneys, or going overseas for a longer stretch, they don’t have to worry about leaving their home, due to its low-maintenance design and excellent security.

cuddles team steps up the fightrelay for life

Melton’s Paul Harrison was a man of many talents.

“He was a like a dad, a best friend or even the chick you go out the back and gossip with,” former colleague Lorelle Anderson recalls.

“Harro”, as Mr Harrison was known to his friends, worked at Melton Country Club for 16 years before dying from cancer in April last year. When he was diagnosed, Ms Anderson decided she wanted to do something to help people battling the disease.

She formed a Relay for Life team, “Harro’s Cuddles”, in honour of her friend.

“I had never had to deal with cancer ... it had never been close to home,’’ she said. “I saw him vanish before my eyes. You feel so helpless and I wanted to do something. He was blown away by the support. ”

Many of Mr Harrison’s former colleagues will be joined by his family and friends at this year’s Melton Relay for Life on Saturday and Sunday . More than 100 people took part in last year’s event, raising more than $90,000 for Cancer Council Victoria.

e 2014 relay will include ceremonies honouring cancer survivors and those who have died of the disease. ere will also be

entertainment and a tug of war competition. “Forty-three people have paid up to be part of Harro’s Cuddles, and the country club has been massive in supporting this,’’ said Ms Anderson, whose father was also diagnosed with cancer last year . “We want to prevent anyone from having to watch a loved one go

through that and feel so helpless.” Relay for Life is at Tabcorp Park from 7.30pm, Saturday . \

The sixth anniversary of Australia’s apology to its indigenous people was celebrated by more than 60 youngsters at Melton West’s Good Start Early Learning Centre last Thursday. Children raised the Aboriginal and Australian ags, lit candles to remember the stolen generations and sang the national anthem . There was also a talk about the day’s signi cance, and a morning tea. Educator Catrina Mallia said the children were particularly fascinated by the many candles around the centre. “I loved holding up the ags and having everyone taking our photo,” said Kaiden, 4 . \ PM

more places for men to share skills and storiesMELTON

e men of Melton city will have not one but two new places to meet up, with new Men’s Sheds to be built in Melton and Taylors Hill.

Melton council and the Kirrip Aboriginal Corporation will each receive $60,000 from the state government to open the sheds. e sheds will not be co-located, despite reports to the contrary.

Aboriginal community member Doretta Charles says the corporation’s new shed in Melton will allow the creation of a men’s group similar to a women’s group that is already running.

“It will be a place to gather Aboriginal men in the Melton area, where they can just go to share stories or do some art,’’ she said.

‘‘Many of them have hidden talents and this will allow them to share them.”

Ms Charles hopes the group will help some of the men nd work or educational opportunities.

e council will build a shed at Morton Homestead in Taylors Hill. Mayor Bob Turner said the shed would become an important community resource for men living in the city’s eastern corridor.

“ e Men’s Shed at Morton Homestead will provide an opportunity for men

to socialise, be active, work on community projects, share skills and interests with other men or drop in for some quiet time or a chat over co ee,’’ he said.“ It will also provide links to

information and services about men’s health and well-being.”

e council has committed $250,000 to the project in this year’s budget. Construction is expected to be completed next year.

e sheds are among 41 Men’s Sheds being built across Victoria a er the state government announced more than $2.2 million through its Strengthening Men’s Sheds initiative. \

and dedicated primary school teacher.I think everyone will agree that we’ve had a scorching summer so far, this year. After a late start, January and February have produced some blistering hot days. To celebrate this wonderful time of year; Melton City Council is once again presenting its much loved Summersault festival this Saturday, 22 February. Reece Mastin will be performing on the main stage, with Caroline Springs’ very own Omar Dean featured on the Live n Local stage. You can visit the market stalls, jump on a carnival ride, participate in a range of sport and leisure activities or just to be a fabulous day. With Clean up Australia Day just around the corner; I encourage you to take some time on Sunday 2 March, to help clean up and preserve

our parks, reserves and waterways. Clean up Australia Day is a great chance to think about how we can reduce our impact on the environment by reducing waste and improving our recycling habits. Council provides a number of waste disposal options to residents. Residential properties are provided with a kerbside collection that can be tailored to include recycling, green organics and general rubbish collection. For bulky items, Council offers one At Call Hard Waste Collection or two free visits to the Melton Recycling Facility each year. FEBRUARY 18, 2014 \ MELTON & MOORABOOL WEEKLY 11

It’s the sideways glances on a crowded bus as a young mum grapples with a heavy pram; the unsolicited comments in supermarket queues about “kids raising kids”, and the assumption they’ve made the wrong choice to raise a child that Sian Jensen and

Ashley Pearson are defying.“A lot of people think ‘you’re a young mum, you’re

not going to get anywhere’,” says 21-year-old Pearson, mother to 18-month-old Dean. “I find that when I go to the shops I get these looks; it really brings you down.

“But I’m actually doing really well so I’m starting to get over it and not care what people think.”

Jensen, now 22, and Pearson are part of a group of 13 teenage mums who recently graduated from a Broadmeadows program called Bump, with a TAFE certificate I under their belts.

The Raise Foundation’s Bump initiative provides mentoring and guidance for teenage mums by matching them with experienced mothers and offering monthly workshops. Pearson says Bump has helped her cope with what life has thrown at her following the birth of her son when she was just 19.

“Things with my partner have been rocky recently, and it’s [Bump’s] given me time out to confide in the girls rather than deal with things alone,” she says.

“We’re living far away from my family and friends so I’ve felt I had no one. Now I’ve made friends who are in the same situation, who don’t just want to go out clubbing.”

Jensen, whose son, Mason, is 15 months old, agrees it can be tough connecting with girls her age.

“Most of my friends are still young and partying. They invite me along, but I just can’t go,” she says. “Our group has tried to go out, but it’s bombed a few times because someone can’t get a babysitter or someone’s bub is sick.”

Jensen has found Bump to be a refreshing change from life around her peers. “It’s always about the kids. We all make friends with people we relate to and I guess for us girls we’ve got something that binds us.”

Program counsellor Jodie Harris says there is often a sense of isolation being dispelled when groups like Bump first come together.

“It’s beautiful to watch how these young women bond with each other and their mentors,” she says.

nurturing and healthy environment, helped by the right resources.”

Black found unlikely support in her school year-level co-ordinator during her pregnancy in 1992.

“I needed reassurance and, out of everyone, he offered the most comforting words: the journey might be different now, but the destination can stay the same. That’s what I want these young women to know.”

Harris says the assumption that young mums can’t look after their children is often wrong.

“The fact they’ve chosen to have the baby is already showing they’ll likely give it as much as they can. They do have other options but this is what they’ve chosen,” she says. “They do anything they can for their babies and deserve that encouragement and support like any new mums.”

Australian Bureau of Statistics research states that in 2012, 11,420 babies were born to adolescent mothers.

As secondary school students, Jensen and Pearson never thought they would be among those statistics. They say school education classes covered “STDs, not pregnancies”.

Jensen says only a basic explanation of sexual intercourse was given, over one class. “They don’t give you any understanding of life choices or consequence.”

But, she says, raising a toddler has opened her eyes to things she wouldn’t have considered otherwise.

“It’s made me realise I want to do something of my own like establish a career, which is my aim for this year,” she says.

Pearson says she’s proud of how far she has come in the past few months.

“I found a brand new house for us to rent on my own, and I’m still pinching myself over it. I think we [teenage mums] need to not be scared, and that can get hard when you feel you’re being looked down on.

“It may take a little longer to achieve our goals, but we can still do it with our children by our side.”

Raise Foundation is seeking mentors to assist young women in the 2014 Bump program. Training starts this week. \

“We require our mentors to be over 25 and a parent themselves, so not only are they a friend but someone to learn from.”

According to research by the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Tasmania, a disconnection with schooling often precedes teenage pregnancy. To date there has been little investment in opportunities for teen mothers to re-engage with education. Harris hopes the qualification to enter TAFE will be the first step.

Bernadette Black, director of the non-profit Brave foundation and author of Brave Little Bear, became a mum at age 16. She promised herself then she would finish her education.

“Although it took me a year longer, I was still able to do it. Even just one subject a week to keep you on track and moving forward is great,” she says.

Black, who won the Barnardos ‘mother of the year’ title in 2009, believes there’s a lack of awareness about local support services.

“Adolescent pregnancies will always happen, and when they do their baby deserves to be raised in a

pongs persist as epa monitors businesses

ENVIRONMENT

Foul smells continue to wa across north- western suburbs despite the Environment Protection Authority inspecting the operations of two businesses in Deer Park.

e EPA has foreshadowed long-term works by the businesses a er visiting Boral’s Deer Park land ll and landscape garden supplier Pinegro as part of its investigations into odour issues .

A spokeswoman said the authority had identi ed several potential odour sources.

e EPA has received dozens of reports of bad smells lingering for hours at a time in Caroline Springs, Deer Park, Truganina and Derrimut.

Residents objecting to Boral’s plans to expand operations at the site described the smells as ‘‘like having a garbage truck parked outside your house’’.

An EPA spokeswoman said the authority was working with the businesses to nd solutions and would ‘‘issue formal notices re ecting the agreed actions’’. She said they would also continue to identify other possible sources of odour.

Residents are urged to attend a community meeting on February 26 from 7pm at Catholic Regional College in Caroline Springs. \ BC

It’s rare to find densely-planted large blocks which don’t require a huge amount of upkeep. This fully-fenced property has lovingly maintained land which

offers a private family-oriented lifestyle with plenty of wide open space.

Set well beyond the front yard laden with established rose bushes, the brick veneer house has four bedrooms and zoned living

areas. The main bedroom has a fan, built-in and walk-in wardrobes and links to a private courtyard. The en suite has recessed walls and a stunning shower with glass feature wall revealing a private leafy courtyard.

Three spacious bedrooms at the back have ceiling fans and share a renovated bathroom with large mirror and window. One bedroom has triple built-in wardrobes.

Living areas include a step-down lounge and

dining room, a separate area at the back of the house with a recessed wall, Coonara and west-faced awning, and a step-down study/rumpus room with split-system.

The timber kitchen includes a Westinghouse oven and Fisher & Paykel dishwasher.

The peaked pergola is one of many outdoor highlights and includes a brick barbecue.

The backyard’s orchard has fruit and nut trees and there are raised vegetable garden

beds. There’s also a gazebo, slate-paved pathways, an aviary, chook pen and shade house.

All the gardens are fully irrigated and benefit from afternoon sun.

The property is within walking distance of the new Melton South railway station and is handy to schools and Woodgrove shopping centre. \

This modern gem will impress any couple or growing family with its mod-cons and low-maintenance character. And its drive-through double garage

makes it ultra-practical for anyone needing space to park recreational vehicles.

The smart and practical oor plan has three bedrooms and a study. The main bedroom has a recessed wall and a walk-through wardrobe leading to an en suite with dual basins.

The kitchen has a walk-in pantry providing internal garage access, and there are stainless-steel appliances and plenty of overhead cabinetry. There’s also a ceiling bulkhead and big breakfast bar. The adjoining family-meals area is tiled and has a split-system. A carpeted lounge room has mocha-coloured walls and box windows – ideal as a theatre room.

External highlights include a huge stone-aggregate paved side yard with off-street parking and scope for a pergola, and there’s a big backyard and paved courtyard.

Extras include ceiling fans, high ceilings and holland blinds and block-out curtains throughout. There’s also ducted heating, an alarm and watertank.

It’s handy to Arnolds Creek estate community centre, recreation reserve and planned shops and school. \

FEBRUARY 18, 2014 \ MELTON & MOORABOOL WEEKLY 57

MOTORING \ ron hammerton drives the lexus is 300h f sport

car – and draws on it under acceleration to cut fuel consumption. Combined, these motors deliver 164 kilowatts of power and 221 newton metres of torque.

Of course, hybrid technology is all about fuel savings, and Lexus claims its contender can achieve 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres on the official combined fuel consumption test. As per our usual experience, this does not translate to the real world but something

in the high 5.0s is possible. Like some other Lexus/Toyota hybrids, the IS 300h can provide a certain amount of electric-only driving, but only at under 40km/h for a short distance.

The price premium for the privilege of electric assistance is $3000 above the petrol-only IS 250, but the 300h is more than $6000 cheaper than the more powerful IS 350, which starts at $65,000 (plus on-road costs).

Having given rival Mercedes-Benz a 100-year head-start in the luxury car business, Lexus leapt out of the starting

blocks like, well, a tortoise in 1989.Lexus founder Eiji Toyoda knew from his

background as president of Toyota that brand reputation is earned, not bought. He put his fledgling prestige car division on the sure and steady path to success, one flawless paint job at a time. Lexus is still a work in progress, gradually filling its model line-up from the original one – the LS limousine – to nine passenger-car model lines today.

Lexus made it hard for itself by eschewing “dirty” diesel engines and turbos, instead embracing petrol-electric hybrids and normally aspirated petrol engines. Don’t hold your breath for a Lexus diesel any time soon and the first turbo is still in the pipeline, but at least you can now buy a fuel-efficient hybrid version of Lexus’ top-selling model, the mid-sized IS, in the new third generation.

The IS 300h, as the hybrid variant of Lexus’ BMW 3 Series competitor is called, sits in the middle of the IS range, between the 2.5-litre V6 IS 250 and flagship 3.5-litre V6 IS 350. The 300h uses a combination of 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor, driving the rear wheels via a fancy continuously variable transmission.

Like other hybrids in the Toyota/Lexus armoury, the IS 300h recoups electricity generated under braking and stores it in a battery – in this case under the back of the

The IS 300h is available in two specifications – Luxury and F Sport – with the latter adding touches such as a unique front grille treatment, an extra Sport+ driving mode with active dampers and bigger 18-inch alloy wheels with low-profile tyres.

Our major complaint with the 300h would be the low-level whine from the electric power train and its CVT transmission, which is exacerbated by the otherwise super-quiet cabin experience.

But we have plenty of bouquets, too, starting with the wonderful ergonomics for the driver. Standard gear includes keyless smart entry, heated and ventilated seats, digital radio and, on F Sport variants, an upmarket Mark Levinson audio.

An all-new body gains a stretched wheelbase, which in turn has enhanced rear leg room.

We will finish on two of our favourite aspects of the new IS – its glorious road manners and world-beating fit and finish.

For the first time, Lexus has truly matched the Germans in steering and handling, making the IS a joy to drive. Add the wonderful driving position, classy fat steering wheel and supportive seats, and the IS puts Munich, Stuttgart and Ingolstadt on notice.

With unmatched quality backed by a four-year warranty, the IS must be on every mid-sized luxury car buyer’s list. Yep, the tortoise is breathing down their necks. \

A hard-fought 75 from Kieran Atkin was the backbone of a slow day for Bacchus Marsh as it ground its way to 184 in a crucial Gisborne District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup clash with Sunbury United on Saturday.

With the two sides virtually assured of nals action, the match loomed as a great tune-up for March action and was played in suitable nals-like fashion at Langama Park.

e pitch was a bit two-paced and the out eld was slow, making scoring di cult for Bacchus Marsh a er it won the toss and batted.

e Marsh was in trouble early when Tom McColl (7) had his stumps rattled to make it 1-8.

Bacchus Marsh skipper Scott Wake eld joined Peter Lalor and the pair started to rebuild the innings before both fell a er getting starts.

at’s become a worrying theme for Bacchus Marsh in recent weeks, with plenty of batsmen getting themselves into an innings and then getting out without making the most of good starts.

Fortunately for the visitors, Atkin looked good from the moment he reached the crease, with he and Justin Macdonald working themselves back into the game.

Macdonald fell for 30, and two more quick wickets to Sunbury United had Bacchus Marsh on the precipice at 6-111. But Atkin

held rm, passing 50 and continuing to frustrate the bowling attack with his solid defence.

He was eventually out for a crucial 75, while handy contributions came from tailenders Andrew Dickinson (11) and Rhys Watson (10).

Bacchus Marsh was all out in the penultimate over of the day for 184. Wake eld thought the total was about par on a slow ground, but he knew his side could do better.

“We could have batted better, but we scratched our way to 184, which is

probably a competitive total,” he said.“ ey bowled well and it was

really hard to score, but it’s a bit annoying to have only one batsman go on to get a score. Kieran batted

really well.”With one game to play before the

nals, Wake eld is conscious of the need to build some good form.

“We’ve just got to keep winning and take that form into the nals,” he said.

“We’ve been bowling well so I’m con dent we can knock over United for under 180.” \

bronzed aussieDiggers Rest’s Lydia Lassila will take home a bronze medal from the Winter Olympics in Sochi, having narrowly failed at the weekend to defend the gold medal she won in the freestyle-aerials at the Vancouver games. Lassila attempted a jump that only men have landed in competition – a quad-twisting triple somersault – and while she nailed the jump she couldn’t stick the landing and had to be content with bronze. Despite missing out on the gold she was proud of her achievement. “I really went for it, I’m really happy,” Lassila said. \

VSDCA 2nd XIMelton scored a comprehensive win against Sunshine in its sub-district 2nd XI match on Saturday . Defending a monster 5-320 from last week, Melton had to work hard early as Sam Magnano (52) set a cracking pace. But after putting on 40 for the opening wicket, Sunshine fell away drastically to be all out for 131 after 61 overs. Tom Cullum (3-34) had the pick of the gures, while James Wheelahan and Jarrod Thomson grabbed two wickets each. \

VSDCA 3rd XIMelton’s third XI made runs quickly but eventually went down to Sunshine on Saturday. With the game reduced to a one-dayer, Sunshine, led by Jake Warwick (88) and Arvind Thampy (67), racked up 7-241 in 45 overs. Melton replied with more than four runs an over, but was bowled out for 162 in the 35th over. With two rounds of the regular season left, Melton is just out of the top six, tied on points with four other sides. \

BOWLSMelton narrowly lost to fellow nals aspirant Glenroy in weekend division 1 bowls action. Melton split the rinks with fourth-placed Glenroy but lost the match narrowly on points 4-73 to 14-84. The loss means Melton has slipped down the ladder to seventh with just one round to play before the nals. Melton will take on second-placed Fitzroy Victoria, needing a win to have any chance of jumping back into the nals. \

bowlers on top as eagles rack up season’s 10th wincricket

Eynesbury’s relentless charge towards another A.E Lowe Shield continued at the weekend with a gritty win over Charles Sturt University.

Despite posting a low total, the Eagles ripped the heart out of the home side’s top order before surviving some nervous late

moments to clinch their 10th win of the year. Batting rst, Eynesbury found itself in uncustomary trouble at 2-18. e arrival of Todd Newman at the crease settled the nerves and the runs started to ow.

Newman was the dominant batsman with 52, but with no one else passing 20 it was always going to be a hard slog.

Scoring quickly, the Eagles were all out for

140 in the 29th over but soon had the game by the scru of the neck with some inspired new-ball bowling.

Charles Sturt Uni collapsed to 5-1 with Blair Sole and Justin Siedlecki wiping out half of the home side with just six runs on the board.

Despite their perilous state, the Uni boys fought out the game. Muhammad Shinwari

(52) and Sampath De Silva (42) got them back into the contest, but it wasn’t to be. e Eagles rallied late in the day to secure a narrow win and keep their perfect season intact.

Sole, 3-14, was superb early and picked up the big wicket of Shinwari, while Siedlecki, 5-30, did the damage at both ends of the innings, grabbing three early scalps before returning to clean up the tail. \ EM

it’s looking up for meltonVSDCA

Melton has its second Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association win of the season a er the dual reigning premier chased down Sunshine with time and wickets to spare.

A er restricting Sunshine to 137 last week, Melton recovered from an early stumble to get the runs ve down, with the middle order doing the bulk of the work.

Melton made early hard work of chasing down the small total, with the top order struggling to handle the Sunshine attack.

Melton lost 4-17 in the rst 40 minutes .But Melton skipper Nathan Giesler and

Stuart Wilson combined to give the visitors some hope, rst consolidating and then expanding their approach as the game wore on.

ey added close to 100 to put the Lions on the cusp of victory before Giesler departed for 45. It was his rst score in double gures since the Christmas break in a welcome return to form .

Nathan Allen came to the crease to join Wilson and backed up his seven wickets from the week before with a uent 21 not out to guide the Lions home.

Wilson was impressive in compiling 45 not out to give the visitors a much-needed ve-wicket win in an otherwise disappointing season.

Melton batsman Anthony Gale said it was great to see his side ght back for a win.

“To get there from 4-17, I must admit I wasn’t sure how we would go, but the boys

batted well and it was good to get up in the end,” Gale said. “ e way the season’s gone, we’re happy to take a win against anyone, but it’s always nice to beat the other west-group sides.”

Gale said that despite having gained only two wins , the side remained

con dent of nishing the season on a high in the nal two rounds.

“We’ve been bowling quite well the last few weeks, so if we bat well I

think we’re every chance,” Gale said.“We’re starting to get some

con dence in the group. ere’s a few di erent blokes getting scores now, so we like our chances of beating anyone we come up against.” \
