CHAPTER 6:CHAPTER 6:AN OLD NEWSPAPERAN OLD NEWSPAPER

Tom left first at the end of our practice and he drove away very fast. I started talking to Rachel and she said me ‘Didn’t you hear what Tom said on the telephone to his boss? “Circle of Gold are going

to be big”’. My heart was going faster and faster.I met Rachel outside the library. We asked the librarian the newspaper of the eleveth of July, 1980. We started looking at it and at the top it said ‘Great Night At Music Competition’. There were some photographs and in one of them, it was Phil Carter.

Circle of Gold didn’t win that night, but they were second or third and that wasn’t enought for David Ryan. I felt suddenly afraid. David Ryan was looking straight into the camera with cold grey

eyes. His hair was long and he was wearing a white T-shirt, a pair of jeans and a old jacket. Int his hands was that guitar. He looked

exactly like Tom. While I was on the bus home, I thought that David Ryan had came

back as a ghost through the guitar. Rachel said ‘I think that Tom Webster and the ghost of David Ryan are fighting inside one person. They probably don’t understand what’s happening’. I

started thinking that all the things that happened to David Ryan, were happening to Tom. So that mean that Tom was going to have

a car crash and I had to change things! The only way that the ghost of David Ryan would dissapear was if Steel City won the

competition.

Page 9: Melanie, Martina, MaríA Paz Y Jesicca

The competition started. Lisa Jones (she was very famous in our area!) introduce the judges and all the bands. The first one were OK, but I didn’t listen much. The second one made a lot of mistakes! And the third band, ‘The Passengers’ played very exciting songs. As I listened them, I started worrying. We listened to three more bands and then it was time for us. The crowd clapped politely as we walked out on to the stage. We started our first song and the crowd loved it. At the end of our first song there was a big cheer. Our second song was even better, but Tom didn’t seem happy. We left the stage. Finally the last band played their last song. Then, Lisa said that the judges couldn’t take a decision and that they were between Steel City and The Passengers, so we had to play one more song. I was afraid to play again. Suddenly, I turned around and there was Rachel. She was with Phil Carter and he started telling me about that night twenty years ago. He told me that the judges were between Circle of Gold and another band, too. Before they played, David Ryan shouted at them and finally he played the last song alone and won. But he wasn’t happy enought, that’s why he drove away alone and had that terrible accident. Then, I thought that we had to lose to save Tom.

Page 10: Melanie, Martina, MaríA Paz Y Jesicca

While I was thinking a new plan, I saw that Tom was walking out on the stage alone and he plugged in his guitar. There were Aruna and Danny standing behing the stage. I ran to them quickly. They told me that Tom said he had a new plan: to play the last song alone. The history was repeating itself. When Tom started to sing, I knew that the song was my new one, ‘A Last Goodbye’. The crowd loved him. I tried not to look at the crowd. I moved behing Tom and pushed him hard. He reached out to the microphone, and fell with it to the floor. I pulled the guitar away from him. I held the guitar over my head and I brought it down hard. There was a terrible sound as it hit the floor. Finally I pushed it into one of the big speakers on the stage. The guitar gave a final scream. The guitar was gone. The crowd were silent. Tom was standing again now. He took a step towards me. I stepped back nervously, but he just smiled and took off his dark glasses. I wasn’t looking at Tom, I was looking at the ghost of David Ryan. He seemed to understand what was happening. Then he said ‘I’m never going to be a big star, am I?’. I couldn’t lie to him ‘No’. He told me that my song was very beautiful. I took a step towards him and said ‘Goodbye, David’. The guitarrist smiled one last time. Then his head fell to his chest and a fez seconds later his eyes opened again. I knew that David Ryan was gone. There was Tom again! Of course, Steel City didn’t win that night.

Now, I’m still working in the factory, but I’m going to leave at the end of the summer. I’ve decided to go to college. Of course, I still play in Steel City. The band is doing well. We haven’t made our first CD yet, but we will one day.
