The School of Marine Science and Technology

Dove Marine Laboratory

The Dove Marine Laboratory, opened in 1908, plays a

pivotal role in contributing to our understanding of marine

biology, ecology, and of human impacts on our oceans.

Marine science is a research area of global importance

in the 21st century, with issues such as climate change,

ocean acidification, declining fisheries and marine species

invasions challenging our expertise and capabilities.

Marine science is also furthering biotechnological

competence through the development of novel

techniques and new drugs.

This is an exciting period in the Dove’s history, as new

developments will allow the laboratory to maintain its

proud tradition of contributing to UK and internationally

renowned research and education.

Our facilities are available for workshops, meetings

and small conferences in a unique coastal setting.

Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

The School of Marine Science and Technology at Newcastle University is the largest and broadest-based marine

school of its kind in Europe, covering the fields of marine engineering, marine biology, naval architecture, offshore

engineering, coastal management and small craft technology, and enjoys a substantial international reputation.

Teaching in the School is informed by internationally recognised and industrially relevant research. This is backed

by extensive specialist facilities on the main campus, complemented by the Dove Marine Laboratory located nearby

on the coast, and further enhanced by the School’s own sea-going Research Vessel.

All our research groups are actively involved in industrial partnerships, which often take advantage of the

interdisciplinary expertise available in the School. These can take the form of consultancy projects, sponsored

student and research projects, access to the facilities, or combinations of these tailored to individual requirements.

“Everyone was very pleased withthe event logistics, and for our‘Science and the MMO’ event wefound the venue ideal. Thanks forall your collective support.”Deborah Gillatt, CEFAS (Centrefor Environment, Fisheries andAquaculture Science)

“The venue was ideal for our purposes, providinga compact but well-equipped venue in a scientificestablishment working in the field of the workshoptopic, setting up the atmosphere and context well:so much better than an anonymous hotel meetingroom!”

“We have regularly used the DoveMarine Laboratory to host NMBAQCScheme Taxonomic Workshops(2003, 2006 and 2008). Our repeateduse of the Dove is alone strongtestimony of Jane and her team.Feedback from our workshopdelegates has been extremelypositive and complimentary. TheDove is welcoming, professionaland packed with inherent historicalcharm – certainly not a ‘run of themill’ sterile laboratory. We lookforward to returning to the Dovein the near future.” David Hall,BEQUALM/ NMBAQC Scheme(Biological Effects Quality Assurancein Monitoring Programmes/ NationalMarine Biological Analytical QualityControl Scheme)We wish to acknowledge photographs provided by:
