CSR means a commitment to developing policies that integrate responsible practices into daily business operations while reporting on the progress made toward implementing these practices. A proven approach used by many leading manufacturers (well before CSR became an industry best practice) to reduce the impact on the environment and improve their operating costs was through a Chemical Management Services (CMS) Program. By implementing a comprehensive CMS program, many manufacturers significantly reduce the consumption and disposal of their process chemicals while reducing their overall operating costs. Through this approach, the CMS provider takes on the responsibility for the purchase, delivery and payment of chemicals needed by manufacturers. More important and critical to their CSR objectives, the CMS provider also assumes full responsibility for the management of the metalworking fluids with a primary objective of reducing overall chemical usage and costs. Activities the CMS provider (in support of reducing chemical usage) may include are the implementation of chemical testing and fluid addition protocols, tracking the repair of machine leaks, use of automated make-up equipment, on- site recycling, the capture, filtration and additive replenishment of spent fluids, and the use of alternative fluids within extended life properties. Quaker Chemical Management Services (QCMS SM ) is one of the leading service providers in steel and metalworking operations around the globe. Quaker has accumulated 18 years of chemical management service experience – at more than 80 metalworking and steel manufacturing locations. The strength of the QCMS SM program is demonstrated by long relationships. Quaker has served some QCMS SM customers for over 18 years while maintaining a contract renewal rate of over 90%. CASE EXAMPLE In 2014, as part of a QCMS SM program, Quaker partnered with a major automotive customer to establish recycling programs that helped them save more than $940,000 USD across several plants in North America. Product recycling involved both Quaker and non-Quaker fluids, including water and oil-based cutting fluids, process cleaners, internal-to-machine lubricants, quench products, and more. These programs reduced waste water effluent and waste oil volumes requiring disposal, decreasing plant operating costs and impact to the environment. These reductions also resulted in fewer trucks on the road and freight cost reductions, which additionally lowered the customer’s environmental risk and impact.

INTRODUCTIONCorporate Social Responsibility (CSR) refers to operating a business that accounts for the social and environmental impact created by the business.

Activities the CMS provider (in support of reducing chemical usage) may include are the implementation of chemical testing and fluid addition protocols, tracking the repair of machine

leaks, use of automated make-up equipment, on-site recycling, the capture, filtration and additive replenishment of spent fluids, and the use of alternative fluids within extended life properties.

CASE EXAMPLEIn 2010, a Steel customer in Northeast China was looking to further reduce their rolling oil spend and outsource their coolant management. Building on our current relationship, Quaker established a QCMSSM program in their Cold Rolling Mills. The program includes on-site, 24-hour service to manage rolling oil and coolants, and a laboratory in all emulsion rooms to ensure product performance. In a four-year period (2011–2014), Quaker helped this customer to reduce their rolling oil consumption by 45% and helped them to save approximately $2,000,000 USD in total chemical spend.
