Jamal Al AlawiCompany profile:LNG is transported in specially designed vessels with specially insulated storage tanks and cryogenic facilities for handling LNG. The size of such vessels ranges historically from under 100,000 cubic metres up to over 217,000 cubic metres today. There are two main containment designs for LNG vessels: Moss Spherical (about 60% of the total) and Membrane (40%). The Moss LNG vessel can be recognised by their hemi-spherical shaped storage tanks. Membrane vessels appear more rectangular, similar to crude and product tankers.

Peter Broers Peter Broers is the CEO of the Port of Duqm Company (PDC), which is one of the pioneer companies in the Duqm area. Prior to joining PDC, Broers managed port-related projects in Hai Phong (Vietnam), Montevideo (Uruguay), and Antwerp (Belgium) for Katoen Natie and Rent-A-Port. He started his career as a civil engineer with Belgian dredging company DEME in the field of port infrastructure contracting, doing projects including quay wall deepening and repair.

Company profile:Port of Duqm Company (PDC) is a Joint Venture Company between Government of Oman and Consortium Antwerp Port. PDC was formed in August 2010 to manage and operate the port of Duqm. PDC is also responsible for developing and managing the logistic and industrial area around the port of Duqm.

Harry Harper is the Ports Security Officer at Abu Dhabi Ports Company. Prior to this, Harry was the Maritime Operations Manager at Hart Security where he was responsible for the development and delivery of maritime and supply chain security training courses, implementation of security initiatives for a diverse range of clients across Europe, the Middle East, Sub Continent and SE Asia from gap analysis to accreditation. Previous roles include: ARRC Commander for Vector Offshore Limited, Maritime Security and Training Consultant, and LC Branch in the Royal Marines.

Nico du Plessis

Since 2007 Nico du Plessis has held the position of Chief Security Officer at Transnet Port Terminals, the port operations division of Transnet SOC Limited, South Africa’s state-owned freight transport and handling company. He is responsible for ensuring compliance with the ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security) Code at 18 certified port facilities operated by Transnet Port Terminals in seven of South Africa’s commercial ports. He is considered an authority on port security, having served in the South African Police Service (SAPS) for 24 years, 11 of which were dedicated to the policing of South Africa’s seaports. Part of his portfolio included the setting of strategies, policies and procedures, and implementation of the requirements of the ISPS Code in the SAPS. He holds a Diploma in Police Administration.

Excerpt from interview from Thomas Franson:How important is perimeter protection?"By protecting the terminals against intrusion, we protect the customers' goods. High, standard perimeter protection contributes to efficient security and the majority of the port facilities have a high standard when it comes to perimeter protection. There are 2.4-metre fences, which are also electrified and fitted with an alarm, making a total height of around 2.8 metres”.

In organisational terms, how have you worked with security in recent times?"Now that the port is made up of a Port Authority and separate terminal companies, co-operation is crucial. Security issues are dealt with through a number of different fora and co-operation committees, such as the ISPS Committee. Representatives from all port facilities in the Gothenburg port area meet twice a year. We also have the Maritime Security Committee, made up of members from different public agencies, and the Port Security Forum, where the participants are persons with responsibility for security in the oil industry in Gothenburg. These are just some examples of efficient collaboration with public agencies and terminals. The network is a prerequisite for effective security work.

Commodore Seshadri Vasan

Commodore (Ret’d) Seshadri Vasan has a distinguished career spanning over 34 years including wide-ranging appointments both at sea and ashore. He commissioned a major naval air station close to the east coast of India and commanded another air station on the west coast. He was on the faculty at the prestigious College of Naval Warfare that trains senior level officers from all three services.He was on deputation to the Indian Coast Guard from 2000 - 2003 as the Eastern Regional Commander with maritime jurisdiction in the Bay of Bengal. He was charged with the task of I4SR,EEZ surveillance, Search and Rescue, anti piracy, anti-poaching and marine pollution prevention.Since his retirement he has steered the Maritime Security Programme at the Observer Research Foundation, a major think tank in India. After three successful years in ORF, he joined the Center for Asia Studies. Besides being the Director of the Asian Secretariat and member of Oceans beyond piracy, India; he is President of the Navy Foundation Chennai chapter.

Chris Trelawny

Chris Trelawny is the Deputy Director of the Maritime Safety Division of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in charge of the Sub-Division for Maritime Security and Facilitation. Prior to that, he was the head of the Maritime Security Section. As well as providing secretariat support to the IMO Committees, technical Sub-Committees and Working Groups, Chris is responsible for advising and liaising with IMO Member Governments, international organisations and non-governmental organisations on the facilitation of global maritime transport, maritime security, piracy and related issues. Following on from the IMO maritime security “Train-the-Trainer” programme, his recent projects have included the development of multi-disciplinary, multi-agency projects aimed at finding regional solutions for piracy and maritime security challenges. These include the ongoing development of the integrated coast guard function network for West and Central Africa, and the Djibouti Code of Conduct aimed at addressing piracy and armed robbery against ships in the Gulf of Aden and western Indian Ocean.

Before joining IMO, Chris spent six years with ICAO and four years with the UK Government in aviation security roles, and eight years with HM Customs in both aviation and maritime environments.
