TRAVELLING TO NEWCASTLE Situated only two hours’ drive from Sydney and 25 minutes from the airport, Newcastle is in easy reach by road, rail or air.

By rail Sit back and relax by catching the train to the Newcastle Interchange. The Newcastle and Central Coast services depart regularly from Sydney’s Central Station, Strathfield, Eastwood, Epping and Hornsby.

TrainLink’s inter-city services connect Brisbane to Newcastle via the regional cities of Casino, Grafton, Wauchope and Taree, while northwestern services from Armidale, Tamworth, Moree and Narrabri also arrive here.

By car From Sydney, head north on the M1. Just over an hour north of Wahroonga on Sydney’s upper North Shore is the turn-off for Newcastle, and from there follow the signs and you’ll hit the CBD in around 30 minutes. From the north, head south on the Pacific Highway/A1, and follow the signs.

By plane Newcastle CBD is an easy 25 minute drive from Newcastle Airport, and you can fly direct to NTL from many of Australia’s major cities, including Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Brisbane and the Gold Coast, while regional flights arrive regularly from Ballina/Bryon Bay, Dubbo and Taree.

Five airlines service Newcastle Airport – Jetstar, QantasLink, Rex, Fly Pelican and Virgin.

The airport is serviced by all major car rental companies, Newcastle Taxis, Uber and Didi. The estimated cost of a taxi is between $64-$85 to the CBD.

ON THE GROUNDOnce you arrive in Newcastle you will be delighted by how easy it is to get around. Newcastle is a very walkable city, with a range of scenic walking tracks starting in the city centre. The Light Rail, meanwhile, enables easy travel between key city centre locations.

Public transport There are a variety of transport options within the CBD. Buses run regularly, a ferry service connects Newcastle and Stockton from Queen’s Wharf, while the train lines from Newcastle Interchange connect you with the suburbs.

The new Light Rail network runs from Newcastle Interchange to Pacific Park in Newcastle East, just 200 metres from Newcastle Beach. The service runs every 7.5 minutes during peak times and connects many of the major venues, accommodation providers and landmarks.
