Media Release: Round 2 - What could be more dangerous than Offshore Powerboat Racing?? Well dairy farming of course! That’s according to Jeff Weake, who fought a valiant race with broken bones in his hand, after one of his cows kicked him just prior to leaving for Gisborne. It didn’t hold the Konica Minolta team back though. Jeff who subbed for Micky Smith, who had a long standing rendez-vous in Vegas, said “Thank goodness the conditions weren’t like those at Taupo last week! I was rapt when we led the boats from the start.” The six other Sports Restricted Class 60 mile competitors were hot on their heels providing great entertainment for spectators with the lead constantly changing. With a light swell and breeze, the Konica Minolta team continued the tight battle, eventually coming in a very close third overall with the win going to Thin Ice team. Co-pilot Adam Smale was impressed with Jeff’s endurance, saying “it was a good result under the circumstances. Jeff had his work cut out for him with one hand, from the sly grunts I could hear through the helmets I knew he was hurting so 3 rd was a good result.” Konica Minolta Team Captain Greg was also suitably impressed. “Jeff only got the injury the day before the race and was determined to not let the team down. It was always our aim to gather points with Mikey being away so given the situation we are more than happy to still be leading the championship after the second round.” Konica Minolta Area Manager, Alan Forbes had an enthusiastic group of customers lined early before the race for their blast around the Gisborne heads. The great position on Waikanae beach front gave them a more relaxing viewpoint with plenty to nibble & drink, thanks to caterer Shannon Zahorodny. Photos courtesy of Cathy Vercoe – www.LuvMyBoat.com Next race: Saturday 18 February at Beachlands (East Auckland). Race starts 1.00pm. The race is hosted at the Beachlands Boat Club at the reserve in Sunkist Bay (end of Wakelin road) – you are welcome to join us at the Konica Minolta marquee for snacks and refreshments and of course spectacular race viewing.
