Introduction
2012 was a very good year for the UK. In total,British companies received just over €9 millionthrough the MEDIA Programme, which is €1.6 million more than in 2011. A further €7.6million was invested in the distribution of over 50 British films in other European countries.
Producers were awarded the largest share of the UK’s funding, with 33 companies receiving€3.6 million through successful applications fromall over the UK.
Several projects previously funded by MEDIA’s development schemes also completed productionin 2012, including Mike Newell’s GreatExpectations, Jeremy Thomas-produced Kon-Tiki and Neil Jordan’s Byzantium.
The MEDIA Programme also supported the theatrical releases of British films on the continent, with the largest amount of nearly
€1 million going to Quartet, followed by over€800,000 for Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and€600,000 for Working Title's I Give it a Year.
UK distributors released 20 European films withMEDIA support, including the multi-award winning Amour, A Royal Affair, The Hunt andLove is All You Need.
MEDIA is committed to supporting innovationand understands that business models in theaudiovisual industry must evolve following developments in digital technologies. In this vein,the UK’s Artificial Eye took advantage of newMEDIA funding, leading EDAD (European Day-and-Date): an international distribution initiativewhich will experiment with simultaneous releasesacross multiple territories.
With MEDIA due to expire at the end of the year, 2012 was also a year of negotiations on its successor programme, Creative Europe. While atthe time of going to print the final shape, scopeand budget of the new programme is still subjectto negotiations, we know that Europe, even in atime of severe financial crisis, hasn't given up on itsdiverse culture. The latest proposal, which nowreflects the EU budget cuts, still includes a 9%increase on current funding levels, which will allow
for the launch of a new financing facility toencourage commercial lending to the creativeindustries.
We live in a time when dancers make films,actors star in augmented reality games, cinemasscreen opera performances, and the boundariesbetween diciplines continue to blur. Such imaginative collaboration is greatly aided andencouraged by digital technologies. CreativeEurope will bring this converging creative worldcloser together, and I look forward to seeing theeffects of that increased proximity in the monthsand years to come.

Throughout the year the UK’s MEDIA offices inLondon, Glasgow and Pontypridd were busy withthe day-to-day administration and promotion ofthe 17 funding schemes offered by the MEDIAProgramme. MEDIA Desk UK alone answered2,573 funding enquiries and conducted 128advice meetings with UK audiovisual professionals.
The Desk also produced a number of printed publications, issued monthly e-bulletins withMEDIA news from the UK and beyond, and managed the UK’s online presence through ourwebsite: www.mediadeskuk.eu
Importantly, the UK’s MEDIA Desk and Antennaeare part of a network of 44 MEDIA offices acrossEurope, and offer support on finding partners and connections in other European countries.
The UK offices also organise, support and attenda number of information and promotional eventsacross the country. In 2012 locations includedBristol, Glasgow and Londonderry.

Theatrical distribution
MEDIA allocates more than half of its annual€100 million budget to helping European filmssee international releases. This is achievedthrough three funding schemes: Selective,Automatic and Sales Agents.
UK films funded through the Selective schemeIn 2012 seven UK films had their Europeanreleases enhanced by the MEDIA Selectivescheme. This resulted in a greater number ofprints, more generous marketing campaigns andultimately larger audiences. Dustin Hoffman’sdirectorial debut, Quartet, which stars a host oftime-honoured British acting talent, was awarded€836,500 by MEDIA to be released in 18 countries across Europe. Lasse Hallström’s SalmonFishing in the Yemen, Dan Mazer’s I Give it a Yearand Ken Loach’s adaptation of The Angels’ Sharealso secured large MEDIA awards: €783,300,€582,400 and €452,700 respectively. FollowingMEDIA Selective support for its release in 14European countries in 2011, Paddy Considine’sTyrannosaur also gained further support throughthe scheme for its release in France in 2012. The film continued to win numerous awardsincluding a BAFTA for Best Director.

UK distributors funded through the Selective schemeIn 2012 UK distributors released a range ofEuropean films on British screens with MEDIA funding that totalled €813,500. MEDIA-supportedfilms included The Hunt (Jagten), for which leadactor Mads Mikkelsen won the Best Actor award atCannes. Michael Haneke’s Amour, Cate Shortland’sLore and Leos Carax’s Holy Motors were distributedin the UK with MEDIA support by Artificial Eye,enjoying considerable success at the box officealongside critical acclaim.

UK films funded through the Automatic schemeThe MEDIA Automatic scheme rewards distributors for the box office success of filmsfrom European countries other than their own(non-national films). Recipients can use fundingfrom this scheme to invest in minimum guarantees or to subsidise the distribution costsof new non-national European acquisitions. 51 UK films shared a total of €4,591,091 fromthe 2012 MEDIA Automatic scheme. The highestawards were granted to Paul W.S. Anderson’sThe Three Musketeers, with €314,345 support,followed by Stephan Elliott’s A Few Best Menwith €254,668 and David Cronenberg’s ADangerous Method with €247,548.

These admissions form the basisfor the calculation for MEDIA Automatic schemegrants. The funding can be used to pay minimumguarantees and distribution costs on new non-national European films.

Funding for UK sales agentsThe Sales Agents scheme allocates €1.5 million ayear and is linked to an agent’s performance in selling European films. The funding awardeddepends on the amount of cinema admissions generated by the films sold in the previous calendaryear, and can be used for acquisitions (sales guarantees) as well as the promotion and marketingcosts of non-national European films. Two UK sales companies took advantage of this scheme in 2012.

Online distributionVoD and DCDSince 2007 MEDIA has been supporting online content distribution via the VoD/DCD scheme, whichfunds video-on-demand platforms and the digitaldelivery of film to cinemas. In 2012 over €6.7 millionwas invested in platforms that offer European content to audiences worldwide. Three UK operatorssuccessfully secured MEDIA VoD/DCD funding,including the new online initiative from CurzonCinemas, which was awarded €400,000.

ExhibitionEuropa Cinemas is a MEDIA-funded networkwhich screens significantly more European films,and in particular non-national European films,than most cinemas. The average percentage ofEuropean programming in Europa Cinemas during 2012 was 63%. The network has becomea trusted brand that clearly signposts access toEuropean cinema for film-goers.
There are 54 member cinemas in the UK, andfour of these joined the network in 2012:Gloucester Guildhall (Gloucester), The Courtyard(Hereford), Plymouth Arts Centre (Plymouth) andReading Film Theatre (Reading). The 54 cinemasshared €883,500 between them in 2012.

i2i Audiovisual
One UK producer successfully applied to theMEDIA i2i Audiovisual scheme which helps withthe costs of financing a film project. RuairiRobinson’s Sci-Fi thriller The Last Days on Mars,which received funding from the scheme in2012, has gone on to see its world premiere atthe 2013 Cannes Film Festival Directors'Fortnight, whilst producer Andrea Cornwell wasselected for European Film Promotion’s MEDIA-funded initiative, Producers on the Move.

Interactive projects

TV Broadcasting
MEDIA also helps to produce television programmes for international distribution. In 2012 UK television producers received over €1.8 million to co-finance international animation, documentary and drama programmes. MEDIA recognises the fundamental role that training plays in the film industry and annually invests around €2 million in encouraging networking and shared projectsamong the students of various European filmschools. In 2012 the Initial Training scheme waskeenly utilised by three UK film schools, and theLondon Film School received funding for twocourses: the sixth edition of the European LowBudget Film Forum and the second year of theirmarketing and distribution skills course, MakingWaves.

Each year MEDIA supports more than 60 international professional training programmes,which teach industry skills ranging from marketing to script development and new technologies to finance.

Access to Markets
MEDIA offers support to a wide variety of networking events, festivals and markets to promote European audiovisual works and facilitate the mobility of professionals. The support can take various forms, such as the MEDIA Stand, which offers reduced accreditation and hosting to European independent producers at major film markets in Berlin and Cannes.
Through its Access to Markets schemeMEDIA also offers funding to companies whichorganise industry events, markets, pitchingforums, etc.
In 2012 four UK organisations were awardedMEDIA Access to Markets funding for theirevents. These were: Power to the Pixel’s PixelMarket, Film London’s Production FinanceMarket, held during the BFI London Film Festival,Sheffield Doc/Fest’s MeetMarket, and the BritishDocumentary Film Foundation’s Good PitchEurope.

Promotional events
The MEDIA Access to Markets scheme also funds European Film Promotion (EFP), an umbrella organisation that facilitates workingrelationships between Europe’s national film promotion organisations. EFP organises manyevents, including Shooting Stars, a showcase ofEurope’s acting talent at the Berlin InternationalFilm Festival, and Producers on the Move, whichis held at the Cannes Film Festival.
The UK’s Shooting Star in 2012 was Riz Ahmed,who has starred in Ben Drew’s iLL Manors andChris Morris’ Four Lions. The UK producer selected to take part in Producers on the Move in 2012 was Tracy O'Riordan from MoonspunFilms. She recently worked on Clio Bernard’s The Selfish Giant which has won the 2013Europa Cinemas Label.
European Film Awards
Every year the 2,700 members of the EuropeanFilm Academy (EFA) vote to choose the winner ofits annual awards from 40-50 selected films. In2012 the 25th European Film Awards were heldin Malta. Michael Haneke’s Amour, which wasreleased in the UK by Artificial Eye with MEDIAsupport, took four prizes including European Filmand European Director.
The two UK films to receive nods from votingEFA members included Shame, which picked upboth the European Editor award for Joe Walkerand the Carlo di Palma EuropeanCinematographer award for Sean Bobbitt. TinkerTailor Soldier Spy was also successful, takinghome the European Production Designer awardfor Maria Djurkovic and the European Composeraward for Alberto Iglesias. The UK’s Dame HelenMirren received the European Achievement inWorld Cinema award.
In 2012 all films honoured at the European FilmAwards, as well as the ceremony itself, receivedsupport from the MEDIA Programme.

MEDIA also offers financial support for the promotion of films through European FilmPromotions (EFP)’s Film Sales Support scheme.Film Sales Support enables producers and salesagents to promote their films at key festivals andmarkets around the world, including SundanceFilm Festival in the USA and FILMART in Hong Kong.
