How does a team replace a com-bined 160 goals, 90 assists, 75% of its face-off wins, two of its three starting defenders and the squad’s starting long-stick midfielder? In short, you don’t. This is the daunt-ing task that lies ahead for Endicott head coach Sean Quirk as he looks to elevate his nationally-recognized men’s lacrosse program to the elu-sive next level.

“We’re going to be a different team, no doubt about it” says Quirk. “You can’t replace the All-American talent that graduated last season. What those guys [Eddie O’Reilly, Nick Cosco, Brandon Dube, and Adrien Peacock] did for the program -– helping us climb to as high as sixth in the National Poll – is remarkable.”

Traditionally known for a highly-ex-plosive offense, the Gulls will switch gears and build from the net out in 2010. Three-year starter, and now senior captain, Eric Hagarty (Sud-bury, Mass.) returns to anchor the Gulls’ defense for his final campaign. A two-time USILA All-American, the Blue and Green will only go as far as Hagarty can carry them as Quirk expects his backstop to shoulder the load for EC. The Endicott netminder posted a 57.5% save percentage and a 7.14 goals against average last sea-son, sharp contrasts from his stand-out sophomore numbers of 68% and 5.43 GAA. Hagarty will be pushed by Mike Klein (Darien, Conn.), Rich Parez (Manorville, N.Y.), Marco Duca (Waltham, Mass.) and Will Lomas (Weston, Conn.).

A trio of junior defenders will look to lock-down Endicott’s side of the field as the Blue and Green send out Robert Crossett (Katonah, N.Y.), Kevin Downes (Cheshire, Conn.) and Andrew Pochebit (Portland, Maine) as their starting unit. Crossett is the statesman of the group, as he has a great knowledge of the Endicott

system after being an everyday starter a year ago. Downes will use his size and fundamental defensive ability to hold down the crease in front of Hagarty, while Pochebit’s pure takeaway ability should keep dodgers to the outside. Quirk also expects Kevin Hannigan (Hanover, Mass.), Jeff Abbott (Hinesburg, Vt.) and Greg Szkop (New Britain, Conn.) to be in the mix defensively.

Freshman Kyle Burke (Haverhill, Mass.) will take over the long-stick middie responsibilities after the grad-uation of fifth-year Alex Marshall (Eliot, Maine). Burke’s quick hands, fast feet and agile play will often find him paired with the opposition’s top midfielder.

Depth through the midfield will be a consistent theme for the Blue and Green as Quirk is prepared to roll out three midfield lines and a handful of face-off guys for a majority of the season. The Gulls’ top line will consis-tent of preseason All-American Brad Lipkvich (Madison, Conn.), Connor Prescott (Norwalk, Conn.) and Kyle Jordan (Falmouth, Maine.) Lipkvich will look to improve upon his 2009 season that featured 25 goals and 18 assists, as the senior has imposing size and a deadening shot. Prescott is known for his finishing ability while Jordan moves from his native attack slot to solidify the Gulls’ top unit.

Senior Jonathan Prentice (Chelms-ford, Mass.) will be flanked by a pair of sophomores in Brendan Eppley (Darien, Conn.) and Jon Thanas (Cumberland, R.I.) to makeup the second midfield line. Prentice had nine goals and six assists for 15 points in 18 games last season. The third group of middies will consist of sophomore Tim Doolin (Waltham, Mass.), Lindsay Connor (Glen Rock, N.J.) and Nick Togneri (Longmead-ow, Mass.).

The face-off duties will be shared by three players: Chris Gugino (West Hartford, Conn.), P.J. Arroyo (Charlestown, Mass.) and Sam Ozycz (Cheshire, Conn.). Quirk expects Arroyo to be the leader of the group, as he took 51 draws last season and won 36 of them (70.6%). Gugino, who hopes to replace his departed Brother Joe (Class of 2009), went 21-of-49 at the X a year ago (42.9%). Ozycz saw limited action, winning five of his nine attempts last year.

The elephant in the room all season long will be the Endicott attack, certainly the largest question mark coming into 2010. Not only did the Gulls lose the aforementioned All-American’s and the point totals that went with them, but they also lost go-to players who found ways to find the back of the net come winning time.

Coach Sean Quirk will likely rotate six attackmen this spring, with Jack

Curtis (Chelmsford, Mass.) standing as the only returnee who saw signifi-cant playing time. Curtis, who scored 18 goals and added 17 assists as a freshman, posted similar numbers his sophomore season with 16, 15 for 31. He will be joined by high school All-American Brian Estes (Derry, N.H.), a feeder who should flourish at dealing from behind the goal-line. Freshman Connor McCormack (Norwalk, Conn.) will help round out the scoring attack as he brings a dodging ability and scoring touch to the Endicott offense.

Junior Brendan McCarthy (Arling-ton, Vt.), sophomore Justin Sproul (Londonderry, N.H.), sophomore Colin Prescott (Norwalk, Conn.) and sophomore Harry Holden (Duxbury, Mass.) will also see time for the EC attack. McCarthy and Prescott, one a “shifty” playmaker and the other a pure feeder, will look to find shooters Sproul (on the outside) and Holden (on the crease).

Sean Quirk - Head CoachSean Quirk begins his thirteenth season as head coach of the Endicott College men’s lacrosse team. Quirk is cur-

rently the 7th-winningest active coach and 10th all-time winningest coach in Division III history. In 2008, Quirk was honored as the Field Turf NCAA Division III Coach of the Year. Under Quirk’s direction the

Gulls have become a premier Division III program in the country. The Gulls were ranked as high as number five in the USILA Division III rankings in 2009. Under Quirk’s direction, Endicott has been in ten consecutive confer-ence tournaments and NCAA/ECAC Division III championship tournaments. In five straight seasons, the Gulls have finished in the top-10 in New England and the top-15 in NCAA Division III lacrosse.

Quirk has coached over 40 USILA All-Americans, USILA Academic All-Americans, All-New England and All-Con-ference players and a total of 32 seniors have received national recognition competing in senior all-star contests. Two players have been selected to play in the MLL professional league with the Boston Cannons. Coach Quirk has been named the TCCC Coach of the Year 2004, 2006, 2008. In 2005, Kevin Lally became the all time NCAA Division

III Statistical Leader in assists in a career. Quirk’s overall coaching record at Endicott College is 158-60 and an impressive 77-7 in The Com-monwealth Coast Conference. The values and culture that Coach Quirk adheres to in his student-athletes is based on continuity, commit-ment and supporting one another like a family member.

A native of Cheshire, Conn., Quirk is a 1995 graduate of Springfield College. He was a standout lacrosse player for the Pride, winning the 1994 NCAA Division II National Championship. He also earned All-American honors in 1994 and 1995. In 1995 he was named the NCAA Divi-sion II Goalie of the Year. Quirk was also the captain of the team that lost in the NCAA National Championship game in 1995, while closing out his college career as being named to the national Senior North-South All-Star Game. Quirk began his coaching career at Springfield where he was assistant coach in 1996 and 1997, earning a Master’s Degree in Education.

While coaching at Springfield, Quirk played professionally for the Boston Blazers for two seasons. Quirk has served as the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) President, NCAA Division III Regional Advisory Committee, NCAA Division III rankings commit-tee and Division III All-American selection committee. In 2001, 2005 and 2009 Quirk spoke to professional, college, high school and youth coaches as a featured speaker at the US Lacrosse National coaches’ convention in Philadelphia and Baltimore. Quirk also owns/directs the Peak Performance Goalie School and Elite lacrosse camps. In addition to coaching duties Sean Quirk is the Assistant Director of Athletics at Endicott College. He and his wife Luz Elena live in Swampscott, Mass. with their daughter Payton and son Kaden.
