Brian Brecht, who has 17 seasons of collegiate coaching experience, enters his sec-ond season as the head coach at Rutgers in 2013. Prior to arriving “On the Banks” he served a seven-year tenure as head coach at Siena College. A native of Long Island, N.Y. and a former Rutgers assistant coach, Brecht was a three-time MAAC Coach of the Year at Siena and led the Saints to multiple conference championships, NCAA tournament appearances and the program’s first ever national ranking.

Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tim Pernetti named Brecht the head coach on June 16, 2011.

In his first season at the helm of the Scarlet Knights, Brecht helped senior midfielder Will Mangan to a long list of acco-lades, both on the field and in the classroom. Academically, he was named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Scholar All-America Team.

On the field, Brecht guided the co-captain to other honors including BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year, All-BIG EAST First Team, a USILA/LaxWorld North-South Classic participant and USILA All-American Honorable Mention. Mangan was picked up and played professionally on Major League Lacrosse’s Long Island Lizards and is now a member of the Denver Outlaws.

The head coach also produced student-athletes in year one, leading 23 of his players to BIG EAST All-Academic Team recognition, which was tied for the most of any Rutgers squad last season.

Brecht, who led Siena to 57 victories (57-28) in his last five seasons there, is the 11th head coach in the history of the Rutgers men’s lacrosse program. He came to Rutgers after leading Siena to new heights. Under his direction, the Saints earned four MAAC regular season championships and two MAAC tour-nament crowns, while also making the first two NCAA Tournament appearances in program history. He was named the MAAC Coach of the Year in 2005, 2007 and 2009, while being cited as the Siena College Coach of the Year in 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Siena’s 57 victories from 2007-11 included 22-straight MAAC wins and 13-consecutive home vic-tories. The Saints’ 57 wins over that span marked the sixth highest victory total in the nation, trailing only the

likes of Duke, Virginia, Syracuse, Cornell and Notre Dame.

Thirty-five players earned All-MAAC honors under Brecht and 41 were cited as Academic All-Conference, including a trio of Academic All-Americans. Brent Herbst, who became the first Siena and MAAC player drafted by the Major La-crosse League, was a two-time USILA All-American. In total, Brecht developed four USILA All-Americans, three North-South All-Star selections, three MAAC Rookies of the Year, three MAAC Offensive Players of the Year and three MAAC Defensive Players of the Year at Siena.

In his last season at Siena, the Saints tallied a program-record 13 wins and finished the season nationally ranked (No. 20) in both the USILA Coaches’ Poll and Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll for the first time in school history. The squad advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tourna-ment, where it dropped a tightly contested match to No. 1 Syracuse.

Prior to his arrival in Loudonville, Brecht spent nine sea-sons as an assistant coach with five different schools. He made stops at Hartwick (1995-97), Penn (1997-99), Army (1999-00), Rutgers (2000-01) and Loyola (2001-04). While “On the Banks,” Brecht worked under head coach Bill Dirrigl and served as the Scarlet Knight’s interim head coach in October 2001.

A graduate of Sachem High School on Long Island, Brecht played collegiate lacrosse at Springfield (Mass.) College. He earned a bachelor of science in physical education from Springfield in 1995.

Brecht and his wife Gabrielle are the proud parents of a four-year old daughter named Paige and a one-year old son, Parker.

Craig McDonald enters second season as an assistant coach in 2013, following head coach Brian Brecht from Siena. He spent one season in Loudonville as an assistant coach, running the defense in addition to helping with recruiting and the day-to-day op-erations of the program.

In his only season with the Saints (2011), the team won a program-record 13 games, capturing the MAAC Championship to advance to the NCAA Tournament. The Saints fin-ished the year ranked No. 20 nationally in both the USILA Coaches’ Poll and Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll for the first-time ever.

“Craig was instrumental with our success at Siena and I am excited to have him here at Rutgers,” said Brecht. “He does an outstanding job on the defensive end developing game plans as well as our personnel which is a huge part of our program.”

Prior to his time at Siena, McDonald worked under legendary coach Paul Wehrum at Union College for two seasons (2009-2010), coaching one of the top defensive units in all of Division III. McDonald also played four years of lacrosse at the Univer-sity of Albany, winning two America East Championships. Rutgers head men’s lacrosse coach Brian Brecht announced on Dec. 14, 2012 that By-ron Collins, a former head coach at NCAA Division III power Stevens Institute of Technol-ogy in Hoboken, N.J., has been named an assistant coach on his staff. Collins led the Duck program to nine-straight winning seasons from 2001-09, capturing 108 victories during that stretch. His 2004 squad advanced to the NCAA Championship quarterfinals.

Collins helped Stevens Tech to six total NCAA trips, including advancement to the tourna-ment’s second round in 2005 and 2006. The 2005 squad finished with a final rank of 10th in the nation. The Ducks captured ECAC Metro Championships in two of his last

three seasons (2007, 2009) leading the program.

“We are very excited to welcome Byron and his family back to New Jersey, as well as welcome him to the Rutgers Lacrosse Family,” Brecht said. “I have known Byron for over 15 years and have always been impressed with his team’s preparedness and ability to execute. He is a tireless recruiter and brings with him many great relationships that he has built here in New Jersey and nationally. He will help us grow and build the Rutgers Lacrosse program as we prepare to enter the Big Ten Conference.

“Byron is also a great teacher of the game and developer of the skills necessary to play at a high level. He will no doubt be an asset to developing and honing the skills of our offensive players.”

After his successful stint at Stevens, Collins moved to the Division I ranks at Penn State, serving as an assistant coach for the 2010 season. Before his appointment “On the Banks”, Collins led Detroit Country Day of Beverly Hills, Mich., to consecutive Divi-sion Two State Championship appearances from 2011-12, capturing the state crown in 2011.

“My family and I are both grateful and excited for the opportunity offered by Coach Brecht to be a part of the Rutgers Lacrosse Family, as well as the surrounding community,” Collins said. “Being a New Jersey native, I had the great fortune to grow up at-tending Rutgers lacrosse games. I am ready to help this program build into the future, and I am certainly excited to help the team prepare for the upcoming season.”

Collins steps in for former RU standout player and assistant coach Keith Cromwell, who is pursuing opportunities in business.

Prior to his head appointment at Stevens Tech, Collins worked as associate head coach for the Ducks for the 1999 season. He led Greensboro College (N.C.) during the 1998 season after coaching three seasons (1995-97) at Roanoke College (Va.).

Collins graduated from Whittier College in 1993 with a degree in Business Administration. As a standout midfielder, he helped the Poets to three-straight West Coast Lacrosse League Championships. Collins has additionally served several national committees during his career, including the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Advisory Committee and USILA All-America Committee.

A 2011 graduate of the University of Delaware, Fossner had a stellar playing career for the Blue Hens, being named UD Alumni Association Men’s Lacrosse Team MVP as a senior. A three-year starter in goal, Fossner led the Blue Hens to an 11-7 record and the team’s second-straight CAA title and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2011. He was a two-time All-CAA selection.

“Noah Fossner was an outstanding goalie at the college level, playing in three CAA cham-pionship games and NCAA tournaments and will be a great compliment to our staff working with our goalies,” said head coach Brian Brecht. “This is an area that is important for us if we want to play in big games in the month of May. I am confident that Noah will help out with the group of goalies that we have to develop their skill sets to prepare them for the challenges the BIG EAST presents.”

Fossner, who served as a team captain for three years, ranked among the top goalkeepers in the CAA this past season when he allowed just 9.54 goals per game and posted 179 saves for a .514 save percentage. Over 100 years ago, three Rutgers University students organized the first men’s lacrosse team and unknowingly initiated a Rutgers sports program that would consistently be among the nation’s best.

It was the year 1887. The first squad, which went 0-4 that season, would be the only squad in school history to suffer through a season without a victory.

Rutgers’ first team captain was Charles Devine, class of 1890; John Polack, class of 1889, served as the first business manager of the 1887 and 1888 teams. In 1889, player-coach Samuel Lockett paced the Scarlet to the squads’ first winning season as the team went 2-1.

Three decades would pass before the game would be witnessed at Rutgers again.

Through the efforts of Harland W. “Tots” Meistrell, lacrosse was reinstated at the University in 1920. In his first and only season as head coach, Frank Graham led the newly re-established Scarlet Knights squad to a 1-5 record.

Over the next five years, Albert Brisotti would occupy the helm of the Rutgers lacrosse program and lead the Scarlet to a 16-21-2 record. He unfortunately has been immortalized in Rutgers lacrosse history as the only coach to hold the reins for more than one season and come away with a career losing record. Regardless of this fact, many noted and successful Rutgers alumni wore the Scarlet on the lacrosse field during the Brisotti years, including the late United States Senator Clifford Case (Class of 1925) and Ozzie Nelson (Class of 1927).

Rutgers’ proud winning lacrosse tradition began when former Syracuse All-American Fred Fitch took over the coaching reins in 1926. Since the Fitch years and leading up to the present day, the Rutgers lacrosse program has only suffered 18 losing campaigns in more than 70 seasons of competition.

While under Fitch’s direction, the Scarlet Knights joined the United States I n t e r c o l l e g i a t e Lacrosse Association (USILA). During the late 1920’s and 30’s, Fitch transformed Rutgers into a national men’s lacrosse powerhouse. In 1928, Rutgers was named co-national champions along with Johns Hopkins, Maryland and Navy. In 1927 and 1932, Rutgers finished fourth in the USILA rankings. The 1932 Scarlet Knights, who netted a 7-2-1 season, were selected to participate in the Olympic tryouts, securing a win over Syracuse in the first round, but losing by one goal (5-4) to Maryland in the second round. A tandem termed “the best attack pair in the country,” George Latimer and Joseph “Frenchy” Julien led that squad to national prominence. Both men were eventually inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame along with their coach, Fred Fitch.

Fitch, who has the honor of being the second all-time winningest coach “On the Banks”, recorded 106-71-8 record during his 22-year career which was interrupted by World War II in 1943. He resumed coaching the Scarlet at the conclusion of the war in 1946, and ended his tenure in 1949.

The program reached an even higher level with the arrival of head coach Al Twitchell in 1950. The Scarlet squad only underwent two losing seasons during his campaign, but reached a number of milestones that far outshone those records.

Twitchell’s 1955 team won the Laurie Cox Division Championship, a national division championship, which it shared with Hofstra.

The 1955 season was also significant for several other reasons. That year, the Scarlet Knights battled Princeton to a 14-14 tie in an epic, double-overtime war. Rutgers, who went 8-1-1 that year, also defeated Syracuse on the road, 23-19. That Orangemen team featured All-American Jim Brown who, historians recall, was outplayed by RU’s Hall of Famer, Bob Kelley.

The 1956 Scarlet Knights, captained by Bob Andrews and Kelley, went 9-1, losing their lone contest to Syracuse but finishing third in the nation. Between 1950 and 1961, Twitchell led Rutgers Tom Hayes is the winningest coach in RU history with 194 victories.

Keith Cromwell was a three time All-American at RU (‘99, ‘00, ‘01). Cromwell was inducted into the Long Island Lacrosse Hall of Fame in Feb. 2013.

to an impressive 86-39-1 record, including a fourth-ranked finish in 1958. Twitchell was honored by being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1967.

Three-time Scarlet All-American Bob Naso, who played under Twitchell from 1956-1959, took over the program from his mentor in 1962. In his 13 seasons, which spanned 1962 to 1974, Naso led the squad to 10 winning campaigns. He recovered from an inaugural 3-7 season

and completed his coaching career with an impressive 95-59-1 record. The highlight of Naso’s career came in 1972 as he directed Rutgers to its first-ever NCAA playoff appearance. The NCAA playoff system was instituted in 1971. He repeated the feat with his 1974 squad.

Tom Hayes moved into the leadership role in 1975. Hayes led the Scarlet Knights to 21 winning seasons and to final Top 20 rankings for 24 straight years.

Under Hayes, Rutgers lacrosse teams established a 194-156 record, including five NCAA appearances, two of which occurred in back-to-back seasons. Three of Hayes’ teams earned national rankings of seven, occurring in 1975, 1982, and 1986. During the Hayes era, 55 All-Americans were selected from Rutgers and 30 North-South All-Star game participants, as well as an international player in Brody Bush, who played with the United States team that won the international championship in 1996. Scarlet Knight firsts which occurred under Hayes include the first team to win 11 games in a season (1986), the first victory in an

NCAA tournament game (1986), and the longest winning streak of nine (1982).

Hayes brought i n t e r n a t i o n a l distinction to the Scarlet Knight lacrosse program by traveling his squads around the world. In addition to bringing teams to British Columbia and Australia for exhibition tournaments, Hayes took his 1992 squad to Bermuda for the first-ever Bermuda Lacrosse Invitational, and his 1996 squad to England for a two-week round of games, camps, and clinics.

In 2001, Jim Stagnitta took over as head coach. In just his second year, he guided RU to an NCAA Tournament appearance, as Rutgers improved from 2-12 in 2002 to 10-5 and hosted Georgetown in the first round of the tournament. Stagnitta was named the ECAC and USILA National Coach of the Year.

Ten men who have been associated with the Rutgers University lacrosse program have had the distinction being named to the United States International Lacrosse Association Hall of Fame. Four coaches have been honored, including former coaches Al Brisotti in 1958, Fred Fitch in 1961, Tom Hayes in 1990, as well as former player and later coach Albert Twitchell (‘32) in 1967. Former Rutgers players include Joseph Julien (‘32) in 1965, George Latimer (‘32) in 1972, Willis Bilderback (‘30) in 1973, Robert Kelley (‘56) in 1985, and most recently, John Valestra (‘64) in 1996. In addition, the man responsible for reinstating the Rutgers lacrosse program in 1920, Harland Meistrell, in 1962.

Since its inception, the lacrosse program at Rutgers has produced 541 victories and 198 All-Americans. In keeping the university in the national spotlight for almost three-quarters of a century, the Scarlet Knight laxmen truly have established a proud tradition.

Building upon the foundation put down before him, first-year head coach Brian Brecht takes over the Rutgers men’s lacrosse program for the 2012 season. With an eye to unite RU’s strong alumni and fan bases, Brecht has plans to put the Scarlet Knights among the nation’s elite. The former Siena head coach’s winning ways have been exacted through working harder than his opponents. His hard-nosed attitude is a perfect fit for the State University of New Jersey.

Justin Pennington became the 197th Scarlet Knight to be named an All-American in 2010.

John E. Danowski was a member of three RU teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament (‘72, ‘74, ’75) Chris Mattes was RU’s latest All-American, earning

honorable mention status as a faceoff specialist from the USILA.

Rutgers lacrosse prides itself on the storied history and tradtion of the program. Part of that tradition are the awards that are given out annually.

Head Coach Al Twitchell introduced the William Miller, Frederick Fitch and Alfred Sasser Tophies during the 1950 season.

Tom Hayes brought the Robert Collett and Scholar-Athlete Awards as well as the Knight Cup during his tenure as head coach.

Former head coach Jim Stagnitta added two more awards to the rich history of RU lacrosse; the Al Twitchell Award for top freshman and the Collins Award for improvement in GPA.

Below is a list of RU award winners.

Robert L. Barchi is the 20th president of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, a position he assumed on September 1, 2012. From 2004 to 2012, Dr. Barchi served as president of Thomas Jefferson University, nationally regarded as a top university dedicated to health sciences education and research. Previously, he was provost and chief academic officer of the University of Pennsylvania, where he had responsibility for Penn’s 12 schools, their academic programs, athletics, students, and faculty.

Dr. Barchi began his academic career in 1972 on the Penn faculty. He founded the univer-sity’s Department of Neuroscience, was chair of Penn’s Department of Neurology, and for more than a decade was director of its Mahoney Institute of Neurological Sciences. Ap-pointed provost and chief academic officer in 1999, he recruited new leadership for nine of the twelve schools at Penn and established a number of university-wide interdisciplinary educational and research institutes.

Dr. Barchi assumed the presidency of Thomas Jefferson University in 2004. Under his leadership, the university grew from three to six schools, including the establishment of the Jefferson School of Pharmacy. During his eight-year presidency, enrollment across Jefferson increased more than 50%, fundraising doubled in spite of the economic down-turn, and 22 new endowed professorships and 50 endowed scholarships were estab-

lished. He also oversaw the transformation of the institution’s urban environment into a vibrant university campus.

Throughout his career, Dr. Barchi has been active as a clinical neurologist and as researcher in the fields of neuroscience and neurology. In 1993, he was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences for his work on the struc-ture and function of voltage-gated ion channels. He is also a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians, and is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Barchi re-ceived his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Georgetown University, and Ph.D. and M.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania.

A New Jersey native with a strong passion for his alma mater, Tim Pernetti has come full-circle in becoming one of the na-tion’s youngest leaders in college athletics. A former student-athlete “On the Banks”, Pernetti was named Rutgers’ sixth Director of Inter-collegiate Athletics on February 26, 2009. He oversees 24 men’s and women’s intercollegiate teams in New Brunswick, a larger number than fielded at most of the

university’s peer institutions. Pernetti has been influential in the world of college athletics since he received a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass media from Rutgers in 1993, and a mas-ter’s degree in communication in 1995. Pernetti’s influence on Rutgers Athletics has been immediate – from the key coaching hires of Mike Rice (men’s basketball), Dan Donigan (men’s soccer) and Brian Brecht (men’s lacrosse) – to securing the first two naming rights partnerships in Rutgers Athletics history. Under his leadership, Rutgers inked a 10-year naming rights deal with High Point Solutions to acquire the naming rights for Rutgers Stadium, along with a 10-year contract with Audi for the Audi Rutgers Club at High Point Solutions Stadium. Both deals have net-ted the Department of Athletics nearly one million dollars in new revenue to the annual budget. Two other key objectives on Pernetti’s watch were to secure a new food vendor for Rutgers Athletics and secure an all-sports shoe and apparel deal for the department. Pernetti led the charge to bring Sodexo to Rutgers as the exclusive concessionaire and caterer for the Athletics Department. The 10-year agreement will enhance the gameday experience, significantly increase revenues to Athletics, and fund future capital improvements at High Point Solutions Stadium and the RAC. He further directed negotiations with Nike to execute the first-ever all-sports shoe and apparel deal for all 24 sports at Rutgers. The five-year agreement worth ap-proximately $5.2M in equipment and apparel will provide state-of-the-art apparel for all Rutgers student-athletes. During his introductory press conference, Pernetti spoke about his vision to build a broadband network to deliver hundreds of live events. That promise has blossomed into RVision, powered by ScarletKnights.com, as RVision has streamed hundreds of live events per year, including unprecedented live game coverage for

many of the Scarlet Knights Olympic Sports. Prior to returning to Rutgers, Pernetti was the Executive Vice President, Content, for CBS College Sports Network. In that role, he oversaw the rights and relationship business, on-air talent, and all network programming and content on air, online and across all distribution platforms for the nation’s first company dedicated to college sports. Pernetti helped to build the CBS College Sports Network, previous-ly CSTV, prior to its launch in 2003, and has played a critical role in establishing it as the multi-media leader in college sports pro-gramming, content, news and information. He was a recipient of the prestigious Sports Business Journal Forty under Forty Award, and the Multichannel News 40 under 40 Award both in 2008.

Charged with developing relationships, acquiring rights and creat-ing multi-platform original programming for the first ever 24-hour sports college sports network, Pernetti successfully navigat-edthrough a complicated web of media rights deals to come up with new ways toserve college sports fans.

Pernetti worked closely with the NCAA and hundreds of schools in every major conference, securing over 2,500 hours ofevent pro

gramming each year and multiple NCAA Championships across 35 men’s and women’s sports. Pernetti was in charge of the CBS College Sports Network exclusive long-term agreements with the US Naval Academy, Mountain West Conference, Conference USA, and the Atlantic 10. Further, he managed company relationships with more than 30 conferences and thousands of institutions. Pernetti remains most proud of establishing a strong relation-ship in women’s collegiate sports including the establishment of a women’s basketball game of the week package in 2004 with the Big East Conference. In 2006, Pernetti spearheaded a landmark multi-media part-nership with the NCAA to make CBS College Sports Network the home of Division II Sports. The innovative deal effectively increased the scope and reach of NCAA Division II sports with hundreds of games now available nationally via the broadcast network and online. Pernetti’s commitment to providing greater exposure to women’s and under-served sports is evidenced by the network’s unprece-dented coverage of lacrosse and volleyball, among others. He has also been at the forefront of the development and creation of the Collegiate Nationals, which crowns champions in dozens of high endurance sports, and innovative original production including CBS College Sports Network’s groundbreaking NCAA March Madness Central, NCAA March Madness Highlights on CBS College Sports,

and the WIRED franchise which gives viewers an inside look at games and events through wireless microphones on coaches dur-ing game action. Prior to joining CBS College Sports Network, Pernetti served eight years at ABC-TV and ABC Sports most recently as Director of Programming, where he was integral in acquiring, managing and developing several ABC Sports properties including college foot-ball, the Bowl Championship Series, and college basketball. For five years, Pernetti handled relationships and negotiated televi-sion rights with all of the major collegiate conferences. As a stu-dent at Rutgers, Pernetti was a four-year letterwinner at tight end on the Rutgers football squad. He was also the color commenta-tor for Rutgers Football on the Rutgers Football Radio Network and announced weekly NFL games nationally on Sports USA Radio. A resident of Oakland, N.J., Pernetti is married to the former Dani-elle Bahto. His wife also graduated from Rutgers and was a let-terwinner on the women’s lacrosse team. Danielle and Tim are the proud parents of their three children – Max, Conor and Natalie. In his spare time Pernetti is the Commissioner of Oakland (N.J.) Recreation Youth football program, serves on the Board of Direc-tors of the Reed Academy (a school in Oakland serving children with autistic spectrum disorder), and has been named a member of the NY/NJ Super Bowl Host Committee for Community Engagement.

Char-tered in 1766 as Queen’s College, the eighth institution of higher learning to be founded in the colonies, the school opened its doors in New Brunswick in 1771 with a handful of first-year students. During its early years, the college developed as a classic liberal arts institution. In 1825, the name of the college was changed to honor a former trustee and Revolutionary War veteran, Colonel Henry Rutgers.

Rutgers College became the land-grant college of New Jersey in 1864, resulting in the establishment of the Rutgers Scientific School, featuring departments of agriculture, engineering, and chemistry. Further expansion in the sciences came with the founding of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station in 1880, the College of Engineering (now the School of Engineering) in 1914, and the College of Agriculture (now the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences) in 1921. The precursors to several other Rutgers divisions were also established during this period: the College of Pharmacy (now the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy) in 1892, the New Jersey College for Women (now Douglass Residential College, part of the School of Arts and Sciences) in 1918, and the School of Education (now Graduate School of Education) in 1924.

In 1924, Rutgers College officially became Rutgers University; a reflection of the institution’s rapidly expanding number of schools and academic pro-grams. Early in the century, Rutgers had begun offering educational opportunities to women when the New Jersey College for Women was founded in 1918, and to adult learners when University College, an evening division, was established in 1934. After World War II, enrollment exploded as Rutgers admitted all qualified candidates under the GI Bill. Rutgers was becoming an institution for all people, and in 1945 and 1956, state legislative acts formally designated Rutgers as The State University of New Jersey. A flurry of expansion ensued. The University of Newark (now Rutgers–Newark) joined Rutgers in 1946, followed by the College of South Jersey (now Rut-gers–Camden) in 1950. An ambitious building program added libraries, classrooms, and student housing across the three regional campuses. In 1969, Livingston College opened, providing a co-educational residential experience with a special commitment to diversity. Graduate education in the arts and sciences grew through the establishment of the Graduate School–New Brunswick, the Graduate School–Newark, and the Graduate School–Camden. Pro-fessional schools were formed to serve students in the fields of business; communication, information, and library studies; criminal justice; education; fine arts; law; management and labor relations; nursing; planning and public policy; psychology; public affairs and administration; and social work. Meanwhile, as industry and government sought partners in solving problems and advancing knowledge, the concept of the research university emerged.

In 1981, Rutgers adopted a blueprint for its transformation into a major public research university. With increased support from state, federal, and corporate partners, Rutgers’ strength in research grew dramatically. In 1989, in recognition of its enhanced stature, Rutgers was invited to join the prestigious Association of American Universities, an organization comprising the top 61 research universities in North America. Today, professors and students work in more than 200 specialized research centers, unraveling mysteries in marine sciences, early childhood education, neuroscience, advanced materials, climate change, nutrition, homeland security, transportation, stem cells, and many other areas that can improve life both in New Jersey and around the world.

A 2007 major reorganization of undergraduate education in New Brunswick reinvigorated the undergraduate experience for both students and faculty by combining the traditions and strengths of four undergraduate liberal arts colleges—Douglass, Livingston, Rutgers, and University—into a single School of Arts and Sciences.

With 28 schools and colleges, Rutgers offers more than 100 undergraduate majors and more than 180 graduate and professional degree programs. The university graduated more than 13,000 students last year, and has more than 400,000 living alumni residing in all 50 states and on six continents. Rutgers also sponsors community initiatives in all 21 New Jersey counties. Universitywide, new degree programs, research endeavors, and community outreach are in development to meet the demands of the 21st century.

Today, Rutgers continues to grow, both in its facilities and in the variety and depth of its educational and research programs. The university’s goals for the future include the continued provision of the highest quality education, along with the increased support of research and commitment to public service to meet the needs of society.
