Venezuela and its challenges
During the last 14 years, since Hugo Chavez was elected President in 1999, many liberties were lost.
Tens of media were closed. The most significant one was RCTV in 2007, for political reasons.
Today, the government has more than 730 media. 2011-2012: More than 40 computer attacks against
journalists, writers, Human Rights activists and opposition leaders for political reasons. (Public Space)
• May, 2012: Neptali Segovia, encharged for the last 15 years of the crossword puzzles in Ultimas Noticias, was accused of promoting the assassination of the President´s brother, Adan Chavez, because in one of his works the words “assassination”, “Adan” and “burst” were found.
• Freedom of press: Venezuela is in the 114th place of 169 countries. (Reporters Without Borders)
Many international organizations have condemned censorship (Inter-American Press Society (SIP), Reporters Without Borders and others) along with many other local NGO´s.
