pharmaceuticals in body fluids. The research group has been
established in Jan 2012 and is hosted by Analytical Chemistry Department, Faculty of Pharmacy,
Cairo University. Our main research partners are National Organization for Research & Control of
Biologicals (NORCB), NAMRU-3, Egypt & National Cancer Institute (NCI), Egypt.
Research Management Activities:

Research Interests
Biopharmaceuticals & Biologicals
Biopharmaceuticals are biotechnology-derived pharmaceuticals and diagnostics. Quality Control
(QC) of biopharmaceuticals involves a number of activities that ranges from designing a suitable
chromatographic purification strategy, selective enrichment of the active form(s) of the drug to
developing suitable analysis strategies.
Current research is focused on the analysis of the posttranslational modifications of recombinant
protein biopharmaceuticals in relation to their pharmacological activity and stability. This work
involves collaboration with Massey University and Agresearch Ltd from New Zealand as well as the
Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. This project is focused on the analysis of the
recombinant human myelin basic protein (rhMBP). This protein is a prospective biopharmaceutical
for the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis.
Downstream purification, pre-formulation studies, analysis and physical / chemical stability of
biopharmaceuticals are also part of our research spectrum. We are working towards the
development of activity-, stability- and purity-indicating chemical analysis protocols. Main
techniques involved are chromatography, capillary electrophoresis (CE) and immuno-analytical
techniques. Established techniques are implemented for optimization of nano drug delivery systems
for biopharmaceuticals. This is carried out in collaboration with the Egyptian National Organization
for Research and Control of Biologicals.
Medhat A. Al-Ghobashy 4
Immunoanalytical Techniques & Nano-biosensors
A biosensor is an analytical device for the detection of an analyte. It combines a biomolecular
recognition component with a physicochemical detector component. Our research is mainly focused
on developing multiplexed biosensors on the surface of micro and nanoparticles. Detection is carried
out fluorimetrically, either through development or quenching of fluorescence. Developed sensors
are mainly used for diagnostic purposes (e.g. HBV & HCV) and quality control of vaccines (e.g.
Polyvalent Influenza vaccine). Currently, we are working towards incorporation of novel
nanoparticles into sensor design. This work is being carried out in collaboration with National
Research Centre & Nile University.
Bioanalysis in Clinical Research
Bioanalysis is the sub-discipline of analytical chemistry that deals with the qualitative & quantitative
measurement of drugs, metabolites & endogenous substances in complex biological samples.
Optimization of sample preparation techniques using Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) & analysis using
ultrasensitive hyphenated chromatographic & electrophoretic techniques is carried out. Our work
forms an integral part in a current research project that involves the assessment of response to
chemotherapeutic agents for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Other applications cover evaluation of
the bioavailability, bioequivalence, pharmacokinetics / pharmacodynamics of drugs and therapeutic
dose adjustment.
Capillary Electrophoresis
Separation by Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) depends on the differential migration of analytes under
the effect of electric field. Typically the capillary wall-generated electroosmotic flow (EOF) is
responsible for mobilization of analytes in CE. Developing and characterization of novel covalent and
dynamic modifications to the capillary wall is the main objective of this project. Such modifications
affect the magnitude and direction of the EOF as well as capillary wall affinity to certain analytes.
This work is carried out in collaboration with Centre for Separation Sciences - Institute of
Fundamental Sciences - Massey University in New Zealand. Applications cover the following: QC of
pharmaceuticals and biopharmaceuticals, monitoring of biomarkers in biological fluids and analysis
of Nutraceuticals in herbal extracts and food products. Main applications are pharmaceutical
analysis using CZE & MEKC. Currently, we are establishing a facility to support our research in the
field of QC of biopharmaceuticals. New techniques involved are CIEF for determination of the
isoelectric point of protein variants & CGE for determination of protein molecular weight.
Stability of Nutraceuticals
“Nutraceuticals” are food ingredients or dietary supplements that demonstrate medicinal health
benefits. Certain nutraceuticals demonstrated inhibitory effects on cancer cell growth. Moreover,
nutraceuticals were found to protect high risk populations from cancer. Herbal extracts are the
main source of nutraceuticals. Our research is focused on stability of Nutraceuticals such as
catechins present in green tea and flavonoids in ginkgo biloba. Effect of various environmental
factors on the total content as well as antioxidant activity of green tea is being investigated.
