Measurement Standard
In science we use SI Units (Systeme Internationale) as our standard.
A standard is – an exact quantity that people agree to use for comparison.
These units can measure time, temperature, mass, volume, length, etc
SI Units
• SI Unit for Mass ___________________________________
• SI Unit for Length __________________________________
• SI Unit for Temperature _____________________________
• SI Unit for Time ____________________________________
• Common Unit for Volume _____________________________

More on Time & Temperature
We will be working on measuring length, mass, and volumein upcoming lessons.
Time (seconds) – The interval between events. A stopwatch or clock measure time.
Temperature (kelvin) – Measures the heat energy of an object. A thermometer measures temperature
Did you know?
Time is NOT constant
Did you know?
“Cold” does not actually exist
Absolute Zero
Fun with Liquid Nitrogen
Why “Kelvin”?What the heck is “Kelvin”
0 K is absolute zero!
Heat makes molecules move. At 0 (zero) K, all molecules are completely still. No heat energy is present!
Celsius to Kelvin
How do you convert Celsius to Kelvin???
• To convert Celsius to Kelvin you simply add 273.
□ 10 °C = __________K
□ 48 °C = __________K
□ 326 °C = __________K
• To convert Kelvin to Celsius you simply subtract 273.
□ 273 K = __________°C
□ 380 K = __________°C
□ 10 K = __________°C-263

More on Measurement
Scientists work with very large numbers and very small numbers. They use something called “scientific notation” to avoid using measurements like…
93,000,000,000,000,000 units.000029300018283000003 units
If you measured this way, LOTS of ERRORS would occur.
So, scientists convert by bases of 10….

How to CONVERT
ALL numbers have a decimal. First, find the decimal.
A blue whale is 3100 centimeters long….is there an easier way to tell the length than saying 3100 centimeters?

Move the decimal LEFT if converting up.
Move the decimal RIGHT if converting down.
Example: A blue whale is 3100 centimeters long….is there an
easier way to tell the length than saying 3100 centimeters?
3100. cm
310.0 dm
31.00 m

Move the decimal RIGHT if converting down.
Example: A tiny amoeba is .0004 m long. Is there an
easier way to give the length of the amoeba?
