Why is it important that everyone uses the sameunit of measure?

What if your friend measured using a tiny shoe andyou used a giant shoe?

Would your measurement be the same?Is your FOOT the same as your friend’s FOOT?

Page 5: MEASUREMENT 3.3. Measure each line segment. Should you use inches, or feet, or yards? Maybe you want to use centimeters, or meters. Think about which.

About 800 years ago, a King of England decided to standardize measurement.

Since most measuring was done using body parts hedecided that everyone should use his FOOT as the

standard unit of measure. So the size of his FOOT is still used today and it is

often called a RULER.

Page 6: MEASUREMENT 3.3. Measure each line segment. Should you use inches, or feet, or yards? Maybe you want to use centimeters, or meters. Think about which.

Use the standard FOOT measure to find thelength of each picture.

Why are your measurements the same as others in your class?

Page 7: MEASUREMENT 3.3. Measure each line segment. Should you use inches, or feet, or yards? Maybe you want to use centimeters, or meters. Think about which.

The King’s foot was divided into 12 equal unitscalled INCHES.

Use inches to measure each picture.

Meters are a different way to Measure.A meter is divided into 100 smaller units.

These smaller units are calledCENTIMETERS. CENTI means 100.

Centimeters are much smaller than inches.
