• Colleges want students who are challenging themselves to take classes above and beyond high school graduation requirements.

• Have you taken the most challenging courses offered in high school? College classes will be harder than anything you take in high school.

• When you start college, you will be taking the equivalent of 4-6 AP/Concurrent Enrollment classes EACH semester. Start now to prepare for college.

Do more than the minimum!

• Scholarships are awarded to students who get good grades, take challenging classes, participate in school activities, pursue leadership opportunities, score well on the SAT and do more than the MINIMUM REQUIRED.

College admission factors: • GPA: Core GPA is Important

• Colleges will look through your transcript to see what your grades are in core classes. For the most part, colleges are not interested in your grades for PE and elective classes.

• Rigor: Honors and Advanced Placement classes.• College bound students should plan on taking at least:

• Continue taking honors classes and/or AP classes during 10th grade • 2-3 AP or Concurrent Enrollment classes during 11th grade• 2-3 AP or Concurrent Enrollment classes during 12th grade

• Test Scores: SAT and ACT

Advanced Placement ClassesAP classes are roughly equivalent to undergraduate college courses. After completing an AP class, students typically take the AP exam in that subject, which can earn them credits and accelerated placement in college.

AP Capstone is an innovative program that equips students with the independent research, collaborative teamwork, and communication skills that are increasingly valued by colleges.

• AP Seminar: AP Seminar provides sustained practice of investigating issues from multiple perspectives and cultivates student writing abilities so they can craft, communicate, and defend evidence-based arguments.

• AP Research: Students will develop the skills and discipline necessary to conduct independent research to produce and defend a scholarly academic thesis.

Energy Academy

According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2014 there were 1,698,830 direct jobs in the Energy Industry. This is an exciting and major growth industry. For example, in 2015, employers surveyed expect to see total employment in the solar industry increase by 20.9%. -National Solar Job Census

Mead Energy Academy will prepare students for college studies, technical education, certification programs and the workforce.

Studies include the following industries: Coal, Conservation, Geothermal, Hydro-Electric, Nuclear, Oil & Gas, Solar and Wind.

Energy Academy CertificateStudents must complete the requirements below to earn the Energy Academy Certificate. Submit an Energy Academy Application (Mrs. Anderson) if interested.

NCAA – Athletic EligibilityDo you want to play sports in college?

• Notify your counselor about your intent to play sports in college during Registration.

• Pre-Registration: Students will review the course catalog (Mead HS Website), their transcript and all registration materials. Students will completely fill out all registration forms.

• Complete all components of your ICAP

• Online Registration (Infinite Campus): Students will log into their Infinite Campus account and enter their course requests for the classes listed on their registration form.

• Registration Review Session: Students will meet with their counselor to discuss and finalize their course requests. Your ICAP needs to be completed and course requests entered into Infinite Campus prior to your Registration Review Session. All registration forms need to be completed and submitted to your counselor at this time. (Feb 23-Mar 2 during Biology classes)

Repeating Failed Classes

• Repeating failed core classes at Mead HS is no longer an option for the following classes: – English 9, 10, 11, 12 – Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Intermediate

Algebra – World Geo/History, US History, US Government – Biology and Chemistry

• Students will still have the option to repeat Health and World Language classes.

Credit Recovery Options:

AP Classes and Math PlacementAdvanced Placement Classes • There is NO application or recommendations needed to take AP

classes at Mead HS. Some AP classes have prerequisites.• Talk to your counselor and teachers to learn more about specific AP

classes and whether your ready for this challenge.• AP Chemistry, AP Biology and AP Calculus BC are 1.5 credits, which

will take up three spots on your registration form.• College bound students are STRONGLY encouraged to take AP

classes.

Math Recommendations • Your math teacher has made a math recommendation for you in

Infinite Campus. You cannot remove this request from IC.• If you disagree with your math recommendation, then meet with your

math teacher to discuss this with them.• If a recommended math class needs to be changed, then your

counselor will make the change to your course requests in IC.• College bound students are STRONGLY encouraged to take

Music and Drama Auditions• Enter the course or courses you want to take

next year.

• Band, Choir, Orchestra and Musical Theatre will have auditions in February.

• After auditions, counselors will be given final class lists in March to place students into the correct band, choir, orchestra drama classes.

Career Development Center (CDC)• Acceptance to CDC is based on the following:

• Currently enrolled in a CDC class• Grade level• GPA• Attendance

• Transportation is provided to CDC from Mead HS• Most CDC classes are on a double block every

other day– Ex. A1 & A2 or B7 & B8

• Cosmetology & Engine Performance are on a double block every day.– Ex. A1,A2,B5 and B6 OR A3,A4,B7 and B8

CDC and Concurrent EnrollmentSome CDC classes are Concurrent Enrollment classes. For the classes listed below you can earn high school and college credit. You must earn a C or better, otherwise you will have to pay the college tuition for your CDC class.

• Write the CDC courses and course #’s on your Course Selection Form

• Submit your CDC application to your counselor during your Registration Review Session

Registration Tips• Review your transcript and discuss with your

counselor a plan to recover credit for failed courses.

• Ironworks 1 and Ironworks 2 can be requested twice (once each semester) by entering an F and an S after the course number. All other PE classes can only be requested once per school year.

• Don’t register for Teacher Aide at this time. This class can be added in August.

• Math recommendations have already been entered in Infinite Campus by your math teachers.

Registration Review Session• Meet with your counselor to discuss course requests

and finalize registration. • Course Selection form must be completely filled out

with 16 course requests and 8 backup course requests. • All course requests must be entered into Infinite

Campus prior to meeting with your counselor. • ICAP must be completed prior to meeting with your

counselor. • Students must bring ALL completed registration forms

when they meet with their counselor. • Review Sessions for freshmen will occur on February

23rd,24th,27th,28th, March 1st and 2nd during Biology classes.

Registration Review Session InstructionsStudents will be sent to the counseling office (6 at a time – 2 per counselor) to meet with their counselor, turn in their registration forms, verify their ICAP is complete and finalize their registration requests.

• Once a student returns to class with their pass, they will then give the pass to the next student until all students have met with their counselor.
