    my sophomore year,

  • sarah annemarie brown I live my life knowing that great outcomes are the results of hard work; that nothing should come easy, and that eventually you will get to where you need to be. Everything will work out in the end, as it has with my sophomore year in Communications Design at Syracuse University.

I have become a communications design machine, never giving up until I have the results I want. There were days of stress and long nights of intense work, but they were balanced with the days of breakthrough and nights of idea bouncing with some of my best friends, forming a communications design family.

These are the works of a COMM DESIGN MACHINE.

    when...

my cropped letterforms fell out of my closet the night before the first comprehensive critique and my professor did not even notice.

  • letterforms

    project one

The goal of this project was to crop out as much of a letter as possible without losing its meaning. This taught us to pay close attention to the negative areas of a letterform that make it unique. Seeing the pieces parts of the letter first, before seeing the letter meant success when it came to this typography project.

  • i woke up on a saturday and the first thing i did before getting out of my pajamas was start cutting letterforms repeatedly.

  • symbols

    project two

The goal of this project was to use the typography elements we had learned about in the previous project and apply it to creating a symbol. This symbol had to be created by repeating the same letterform in a unique layout. Success meant seeing the whole symbol before noticing what letter it was created from.

i worked sixteen hours straight on the 3D letterform project and did not stop until it was completely done.

  • letter form

    project three

The goal of this project was to create a three dimensional letterform to see how it exists in space. This project tested our three-dimensional construction skills for the first time in communications design, and success for this project was that the viewer would only see the letterform, not the way it was made.

  • I became aMACHINEi created 58 layouts to come out with two for the final letterform layouts and enjoyed the idea of a 101 Layouts class my professor proposed

  • layouts

    project four

The goal of this project was to organize typography and image in the same visual arena. We needed to come up with a common theme and incorporate our previous three projects within the layout. The grid was introduced to us for this project, and one of our layouts needed to fol-low it and one needed to break it.

i looked at everything around me and thought about how it would be designed in a simple geometric form

  • formal - typographic - image - hybrid - cube

    project five

The goal of this project was to define three words in three different ways: formally, typographically, and using imagery. Once these were created, we needed to combine the three into a hybrid layout, & finally create a 3D cube for one of the words. I choose to define aggression, organization, and alienation.

    project one

The goal of this project was to create a new chain restaurant and create its branding. It tested our minds to come up with THE BIG IDEA for the first time. This project was our first group project. Together, we came up with the idea for the restaurant, & on an individual basis came up with a logo, type & image poster.

The goal of this project was to create an exhibit that taught about the history of branding and corporate identity, while engaging the visitors and keeping them entertained. This project was a group project of five people, together designing, building, creating a book, and coming up with individual grand opening posters.

The goal of this project was to teach someone about a topic through visually appealing information graphics while creating a big idea through the way in which the info graphics were presented. I created a satire kit on how to get away with murder, creating a branded briefcase carrier for a book, and supplies one would need.

  • progression

    project two

The goal of this project was to create visual connections and progres-sions on a macro and a micro level. Each panel had to encompass a found image that was completely separate from the next content wise, but connected on a micro level. My macro theme went from light to dark to light to dark and from line drawings to 2D graphics.

    project one

The goal of this project was to create a product with the main active ingredient being baking soda. We needed to create packaging, an advertisement, and a point of purchase display in order to sell the product. Success in this project came with a distinction of your product from the competition.

The goal of this project was to create a double-sided magazine for a couple living the same lifestyle. There needed to be an article on relationships, money management, careers and a department that we chose ourselves. My magazine was aimed at a man and a woman living the swinger lifestyle.

  • and because of this, my sophomore experience was one I will never forget. In the end, it was full of lesson, triumph, and communications design love. I learned more then I could have ever thought I could in 2 semesters, enjoyed process and loved my final project results. I also made some of my closest friends, the ones I call my comm design family.
