The Kappel Principle
Inspired by nature
Adopted by aviation
Now sailing the seven seas
The Kappel principle for ship propellers has been refined
over 20 years via extensive R&D
Kappel is today the most efficient propeller design,
increasing propulsive efficiency by 2-5%, compared to
conventional propellers
(by reducing tip losses)
The Kappel rights was acquired by MDT in 2012
Can be applied on both FPP and CPP
Reduces propeller induced pressure impulses. Thus larger
propeller diameters can be applied (lower rpm)

Rudder Bulb DesignOptimisation procedure
Rudder Bulb Optimisation
The rudder bulb solution is customized for each
individual project
MAN Diesel & Turbo uses an in-house
developed CFD optimisation routine based on
parametric design variables
Typically 50-100 different geometries are
analysed
Rudder bulb gain depends – apart from an
optimum shape - on thrust loading coefficient
and hub/propeller diameter ratio.
