Reading Recovery Methodology

• Data collection based on Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement by Dr. Marie Clay*• (6) tasks dealing with reading and writing processes• Exit results from Kindergarten readers help determine pool• Completed at time of entry and at time of discontinuation• Discontinuation occurs when performance of exiting student = avg. range of

class• Data also collected on Random sample group population of second yr. primary

(1st)• If RS student included in RR, individual child data removed from RS group data

National Random Sample Population of Non-Reading Recovery Students

•Normally each Reading Recovery School randomly selects 2 students to be their Random Sample comparison students.  •Teachers use the Random Sample number generator on the IDEC website.  These RS students may be any student (high or low) in the general population who are not receiving RR services.  •The actual number of RS students from each school can vary from year to year.  •Normally, all RS student scores are usually combined at a national level and only one score reported that reflects the entire national group.  •If a Random Sample child is selected at some point in the year to enter Reading Recovery, then they are excluded from the Random Sample pool.

National Random Sample Population of Non-Reading Recovery Students Continued

•The RS students serve as a comparison group that reflects an “average” achievement level.  In this way, the success of RR students is measured against their average or above average peers.  •If the RS student moves from school prior to year end, they are removed from the random sample pool due to lack of end of year scores. The End-of-Year exam for RR students is the same reading assessment at entry and exit - The Text Reading Level Portion of the Observation Survey (Clay, 2002)
