General ConstruCtion

Over the coming year we’ll be focussing our efforts on three key sectors. Whilst we’re well established in two of these sectors, General Construction and Energy, I’m pleased to say that we’ve recently gained significant momentum in Coal.

As you know, we’re in a good position in 2012 because as a company, we’ve continually

evolved for the better over the past 16 years. Today our largest project is worth around $90m, but our first was worth just $77,000.

From these beginnings we quickly established ourselves as a builder of choice in the general construction market, developing long term relationships with the likes of TradeCoast Central, University of Queensland and Woolworths.

Our unique construction expertise was then transferred into Energy, for companies such as Origin Energy, Fluor, and now Bechtel, and it’s through these projects that we’ve developed our

HSEQ systems to a very high standard.

It’s only natural then, that our evolution into the coal sector has been a logical step for McNab, and I’m pleased with the wins the company has created in such a short period of time.

With over 80% of our projects from repeat business, our people have proven over the years that they consistently do the right thing by our clients. Combine this with our focus on safety, and there’s no doubt in my mind that we’ll continue to be successful across all three sectors for years to come.

at the recent Mcnab annual Meeting we had the opportunity to listen to

comedian and author anh Do. there were three things anh said which

resonated with where the company is right now, and where we’re headed:

1. Give yourself permission to play in a bigger game.

Some time ago we decided to do exactly this, and we’re now working

for major clients in the energy and resources sector. Our Origin success

led to multiple projects with Fluor, and we’re now about to commence on site for two major Bechtel projects on

Curtis Island.

2. every day is a blessing.

With these great opportunities we’re taking on, we’ve put ourselves in

a strong position moving forward, especially in light of the climate in the

general construction sector.

3. Give it a crack, see what happens.

More of our people have now moved onto FIFO rosters, and we understand

this means changes for our families. Equally, I’m proud that so many of

our people have put their hand up to take on these new opportunities, your

flexibility really is appreciated.

The red carpet was rolled out at the Brisbane Master Builders Award ceremony last month, where McNab took out the award for Best Health and Education Facility ($5m - $20m) for construction of the Brother Alexis Turton Science Centre for Marist College Ashgrove.

The architecturally designed 2,320m² two-storey facility comprises of eight laboratories, a prep room, staff room, computer labs, general learning areas, amenities, science lounge and outdoor learning areas. McNab coordinated the design and installation of high specification hydraulic, gas and electrical services around the already constructed concrete footings.

College Headmaster Mr Peter McLoughlin said the new state-of-the-art facilities set the benchmark for learning facilities, and were a world away from traditional classrooms.

“We now have a magnificent asset, a facility that inspires curiosity and creative learning for current and future generations of scientists and their teachers,” Mr McLoughlin said. In addition to a high quality build, McNab delivered this facility with no cost over-runs for the school.

the recently completed aged care and retirement facility for Masonic Care queensland adds to a growing list of clients in the sector which include blue Care, spiritus, as well as private independent living developers such as the village retirement Group.

The $35 million expansion involved the construction of 49 luxury apartments designed for independent retirees as well as a 90 bed residential aged care facility which caters for low care, high care, secure dementia care, palliative care and respite care patrons.

Construction took place in the middle of the fully operational aged care facility with minimal disruption to patients. The facility sets the benchmark for multilevel aged care and retirement developments, and could not have been achieved without the commitment of the McNab team, especially Shane Godbold, Grace Wuth, Caroline Andrews, Garry Bauer, Jason dolley and Paul Gordon who relocated to Townsville to ensure this project was a success for our client.

The project is the construction of a specially-designed 35 megalitre water containment reservoir. With the reservoir holding treated water used for irrigation and the like, this is a key piece in our client’s responsible water management approach in the area.
