Our Annual Reunion started off with a cooler than usual morning, with lots of early birds to the show. The clouds soon burned off and the show was off to a good start. There were lots of cars, and lots of fun to be had. One of the new parts of the usual show, was our fundraiser. We played re-verse bingo, and along with Lila, Mary Nelson, Doreen, Margaret Miles, and Mrs. Betty Volk and her friend, Barbara, we had a good thing going. There were 4 games, and 4 winners. We sold out the squares by 10:30am. We GIVE A BIG THANK YOU to all who participated, also.. One of the winners, was Mike/Joyce Woodward. He donated back to the OFRT's his winnings of $125.00, and we raised a total of $625.00. What a suc-cess. We will do that again in October, at our Reconstruct the American Legion show. So, bring your lucky numbers, and purchase a square. Good Luck to all who will participate. The car show was a success, also. We had over 72 prizes raffled, a 50/50 that was worth $200.00+ dollars and lots of breakfast and lunch. Breakfast was cooked by the American Legion folks, and lunch was by the famous OFRT cooks and servers. They are the reason we come to eat. The ladies at the ta-bles to collect the money, and hand out the food, included Karen Mehas, Sha-ron Preston, Donna King, and Lisa Wikert. If I left anyone out, I am sorry. After the awards at 3:00pm, the show was over, and another successful OFRT event was completed. LIla

Hot August Nights 2014 Weather was unpredictable as usual we had scattered thunder storms! We were the only 3 old farts this year at the event. The Barrett Jackson auction was busy and brought lots of people to Reno! Big boy toy store had all the lastest car products available.

The judges left a lit-tle to be desired in there skills at the Peppermill! The cadillac pi-ano man came again and enter-tained the crowds and also said to give his best to the New-mans lol! Slick willy had few jackpots to keep him well for the trip

but sad to report no royal flushes! Over all the trip was fun had a safe drive up and back. Looking forward to next year! Denise

Bobs Big Boy City of Norco Veterans Memorial fundraiser On Saturday August 2, 2014 We had a fundraising Car Show to raise money for a Veterans Memorial being built in Norco CA to be used for many years to come by Veterans. We worked for a very long time, partnering with the City of Norco, to make this a Successful Event. We at Bob's though our generous donations from the Hot Rod folks, and our raffle, we raised over $2000. I'd like to Thank James and Laurie Smallwood, for all of there time and energy that they put into this event. I'd like to Thank all of the folks that donat-ed raffle items, and all of those folks that bought raffle tickets. I'd also like to Thank the City of Norco for there support. A special Thank You to Stater Brothers for bringing out there 1947 cab and trailer a 10 wheeler grocery delivery truck. You normally only see this truck at huge car shows like San Bernadinos old Route 66. It was the highlight of my personal car show career. Stater Brothers really supports the com-munity. The city of Norco is celebrating there 50 year anniversary. Our local Stater Brothers market in Norco has also been here 50 years! A long with the Ford Mustang and the Beatles, 1964 was a great year indeed. Our Car Show was followed by a good, old fashioned Sock Hop in the Riley Gym, put on with the City of Norco. I'd like to call this event fundraising, but even though it was a ton of work, it really was FUN-raising!!! With Fun being had by all. Our next Fundraising Event will be kicking off the Christmas Season with Santa himself. Saturday November 29, 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM

A benefit for Foster Care Kids and Needy Senior Citizens for a non profit group Angels, Elves, and others. We will have a live band ... A HUGE raffle ( We'll take any do-nations ) fyi ... Our Famous Pie Walks, and of course Awards. Thanks so much Rodders for your support. Love and Hugs Charyle Bob's Big Boy 3521 Hamner Ave

Loma Linda Children’s Hospital Monday June 16, 2014

Loma Linda Children’s Hospital celebrated Luke the Lions Birthday. This is an annual event established by Big Hearts for Little Hearts Loma Linda Guild. The Old Farts Racing Team participated in the celebration along with Teen Challenge. Entertainment was provided by The Wonderelles. Our very own Richard Wyatt and Roberto Garcia joined in as part of the entertainment, they were very good sports. The children were walked down a red carpet with their caregivers to view the Classic Cars. Balloons were flying from each car. A Classic Fire Engine was there distributing Fire Hats. A nice Lunch was served along with Birthday Cake. The event is held annually to bring smiles to the children whose struggles are hard for us to imagine. Being there opened our hearts and brought smiles to our faces as well. Proud to be an Old Fart. Harry Alford, Joe & Linda Byers, Roberto & Lupe Garcia, Henry & Janene Hem-borg, Ralph Joseph, Phil & Sharon Preston, Dan Welch, Rich-ard Wyatt & Manuel Za-more attend-ed.

‘Side the ‘Mill Up against the writer’s block wall

By Rotten Rodney

Hey, y’all know what this is, right? It’s “writer’s block” and if memory over-serves me, we’ve talked about this before, so consider the following a quick refresher. Now I just went—hate to say it, but—“online” and accordin’ to the newfangled ‘lectronic Funk ‘n’ Wagnall, writer’s block is “the condition of being unable to think of what to write or how to proceed with writing.”

Well, here we are again. It’s deadline time and like the time before and the time before that, yours truly is up against the writer’s block wall, in need of a no-tion. For some time now I’ve toyed with the idea of writing a thoughtful and detailed story (or “farticle” as we call ‘em here) about—nothin’. At times like these I’m tempted just to look around and write about the very first thing I see. Oh, wait. On second thought,

perhaps the second thing I see might be more appropriate for the G-rated, family-friendly, Old Farts Racing Team’s Gaseous Gazette.

Back to writer’s block: sometimes a writer’s block breakthrough is made just by sleepin’ on it, but no, not this particular time as still, I lay here notionless. At this point I remain optimistic about salvaging this downward-spiraling tale o’—nothin’. However, without other options I’ve no choice but to implement the original Plan-B. So, like it or not, we’re goin’ with the second thing I see.

In the we-wee hours o’ this mornin’, the second thing I see looks a little hazy, but through the haze I can tell for sure that it’s lovingly delivered by a beautiful woman. As the lingering haze begins to clear, here comes the offer-ing: a rich cup o’ mountain-groan coffee—in bed. Now this could fuel some creative inspiration as I must confess that I’m touched by such warmness, but dag-nabbitt, the dream changes, I’ve wet myself again, so I probably shouldn’t write about the third thing I see either.

Page 15: May/June/July 2014 Volume 19, Issue 3 Old Farts Racing ...oldfartsracingteam.us/newsletters/2014/MayJuneJuly2014.pdf · Page 2 Gaseous Gazette Old Farts Hotline 951-242-9575 May/June/July

Right about now y’all might be thinkin’ this here farticle is a piece o’ crap in the mak-ing, and of course you’re right, but hey, it’s deadline time and I’m unprepared. In addi-tion to that, I’m not feelin’ creative. Mean-while, the Rotten Archives are overflowing, so I can always recycle some (just a few this time) old photos and poop this out as I go.

So, how many are still with me—two? That’s good. Either of you two may recognize this photo from a previous farticle. That one spotlighted technological advance-ments in anal hygiene; from primitive man’s leaves ‘n’ rocks, to now-traditional paper products, which really haven’t evolved much—until recently, that is.

An issue or three back we alluded to an impending Part 2 of the aforementioned anal farticle. However, since both of you who actually read these rants demand an interspersion of tech these days, I’d best stop right here as I fear that the hands-on, technical portion could get sticky.

Anyway, I just went back and read all this—and sure enough, it stinks. Still lookin’ to save it, I realize that I’d better change course quick—or better yet, start all over. This time around, perhaps we should query: apart from old cars, what else interests Old Farts—flatulence? Oh no, here we go again.

Deacon Guardrail Some of you know that about a year and a half – two years ago I had my poor ol’ ’55 up for sale. I’m glad to say that it’s now off the market and I would like to share with you the circumstances that led up to all of these things. Here is something that I posted on a Hot Rod builder’s message board back in May of 2013: Back when I was about 12 years old, we had a customer at Ed Martin Garage Inc. by the name of Ralph Hinton who was about the grumpiest old guy that you can imagine; I mean, he was so bad that every time Ralph would step foot in the shop, I would do my best to avoid him – he was just flat-out grumpy; that is until he retired and became one of the nicest people that you could ever meet. Seemingly over-night, Ol’ Ralph became one of my favorite customers, I no longer tried to hide when he stepped foot in the shop. I remember thinking to myself that I hope that I never end up like Ralph – hating my job so much that I projected that hatred on everything that I became involved with. Of course, I loved working on cars so being like Ol’ Ralph could never happen to me. Over the last couple of years, I’ve been turning into Ralph Hinton. With all of the changes to my business, my home town and seemingly every other thing in my life, I’ve been turning into a first class grump! Those who are closest to me can attest to this progression into curmudgeoness. What to do? Retirement seemed to work for Ol’ Ralph – so it made sense to pursue just that – I figured that I could sell off everything and retire to the good life in – oh, I don’t know, maybe Atascadero; it’s just 25 minutes to the beach down a curvy road and I could help Chuck Jennings with the walnut har-vest, yes siry Bob – the good life. So, for the past year or so, Pam and I have been doing our best to figure out how to make this retirement thing work out. Generally speaking, if you’ve worked for the same company for over 40 years you might start off with walking into H.R.

and discussing your desire to hang it up; not so in family business. Divesting yourself of things accumulated over 79 years of business is a daunting task at best so - Pam and I were trying to do things in the most sensible manner in which we could. In the middle of April, a fellow garage business owner and I had discus-sions concerning the sale of Ed Martin Garage Inc. On the morning that I was to give the interested party a dollar figure of what I wanted for the business, Pam and I were following our morning routine of prayer. Over the years, we have found that whenever we have a big decision to make it just makes sense to do our homework first and then commit it to prayer. During our prayer time it became very evident that selling the business and retiring was the WRONG thing to do. I told Pam that I was uncomfortable with selling and she replied that she was uncomfortable too. We have decided to not pursue retirement at this time and I’m here to tell you that a gigantic weight has been lifted off our shoul-ders! Now for the curmudgeoness problem. A good friend of mine directed my attention to an article in Streetscene magazine by Jim Rowlett. Jim used the il-lustration of a black dot in the middle of a piece of paper and how we tend to focus on the little black dot and not the big piece of paper. Bingo! I’ve been black dottin’ it! I’ve been focusing on the negative aspects of my life and if you really look at them, they’re a little black dot on the nice big clean piece of paper. I’ve been wanting to get outa Dodge and as it turns out, Dodge ain’t so bad af-ter all. I think that we all go through similar situations at different times in our lives. I know that if we take the time to commit these situations to God in prayer that He will show us the right path. If we depend upon the infinite wisdom of God instead of our own pea-brains – we can make the right decisions saving ourselves a lot of heartache. D.G.

Wow! June 2014 marks twenty years of OFRT fun. This years re-nuion was great as usual, lots of neat cars and both new and old friends. Congrats to long time OFRT member Jan Newman, this years Old Fart of the year. It's really something how twelve guys having a barbecue Friday nights has turned into the group of twenty-three hundred plus people put-ting on car shows and having fun. The Antique Nationals was also in June at Fontana Dragway. As most of you know the Antique Nats in 1994 was our first outing as a club. This year we had several cars participating. OFRT members Bobby Clark And Harry Graun made it to the final rounds in bracket one and bracket two, while Bill Clark and yours truly got whooped a bit earlier. Dutch Sick-lesteel finally got his Fiat Topolino out to the track and made three passes basically testing. The car went straight and looks really neat. I look for Dutch to be really fast in the near future. Since LACR closed the Antique Nats have been held at Fontana and Irwindale. Both of these tracks have good things about them, but they just don't have the nostalgic feel of LACR. Now admittedly the racing surface was not the best and the pits were pretty dirty but it had the feel of the old time drag strips. At this time it looks like Fontana is going to be the An-tique Nats home and that is probably a good thing as it's a quarter mile track and it's close to home. M.M.

Welcome To All New Old Farts !! Welcome all new members to the Old Farts Racing Team! Our sole purpose is to have old fash-

ioned drag racing fun. You do not need a car to have fun, come with someone who is participating, be a spectator, or build your own car. Gatherings are held on the second Tuesday of every month, at the American Legion Hall #79 at Fairmont Park in Riverside. We have no club officers. We have

what we call “meetings”, or bullshit sessions, for lack of a better term.

Thank You to the crew that helps with the OFRT newsletter, without their hard work, this newsletter wouldn’t happen. Mark Godfrey, Dave Bertino, Sharon Preston, Diane Olvera, Lila Bashim-Casteloes, Willie Martin, “Rotten” Rodney Bauman, Mike Woodward, Andrea Kaus, Russell Utz, Steve Johnson, Denise Wasson-Martinez, Charyle Trujillo, and a few others that I just can’t remember right now. G.W.

Would you like to be a sponsor of the OFRT newsletter? We could sure use a couple more sponsors to help pay for the yearly running costs of our website and newsletter. The cost is $25 a year, and you get your business card in our newsletter, (4 issues a year) and it’s also put in our discount directory in the preferred section.

I would like to spotlight Andrea Kaus for always taking the most amazing pic-tures of our events, she not only takes pics of our horsepower, but she has a great collection of horse photos too. you can check out all her photos anytime at cha-osgraphics.com. Helpful Hint: I really enjoyed her collection by making the pics run a slideshow full screen, you can really see the details of all the great rides.

We are up to 2369 Members!!!

Would like your car to be considered for Car of the Issue? Email us at [email protected] with a picture of the car and all the information needed to write about it. Make sure to include a phone num-ber in case we have any questions. Remember we will probably get a lot sub-mitted and we only put out 4 issues a year so be patient with us.
