NEWSL O C A L

Wellbeing news from around your area...

Listening to the national news, much of it dominated by the

economy and jobs as usual, a recurring story about Cameron’s

wellbeing index often catches my attention. Refreshing, sort of,

and whilst I find it encouraging that a well-off conservative, when

quizzed, sometimes appears to place more emphasis on the

nations happiness than the economy, I also can’t help feeling

slightly irritated at the same time. It’s taken a while for me to put

my finger on exactly why. I think the idea of measuring happiness

has something to do with it. I’m not quite sure how or why, but

I’m cynical about statistics at the best of times, let alone when

something as intangible as happiness is being measured, but it did get me thinking.

Just as sometimes it can be beneficial to look for alternatives for healing rather than looking

always to a GP to fix us, perhaps now is the time to look around us to our community rather than

the government to fix things? As I put together each edition of Wellbeing, I am often struck by the

diversity of groups, events and activities happening across the county; so many people, joining

together and sharing knowledge, ideas and a mutual interest in wellbeing. These people are not

measuring their emotions and feelings, they are just getting on and dealing with the best life has to

throw at them. Incredible singing workshops, powerful dance groups, healing workshops, fitness

sessions...so much to nourish the mind, body and spirit is on our doorstep, and possibly the most

powerful of all and which certainly can’t be measured, is our network of neighbours and friends and

the relationships that bind us to our community. Please, let’s go out into East Sussex, take responsibility for our own wellbeing and get involved!

Wishing you health and happiness,

Hannah East Sussex Publisher

For most of us, getting into a lift is one of the easiest things in the world, but for people with a fear of enclosed spaces it can be a nightmare experience. For 55-year-old Jill from Lancing, it meant always having to use the stairs in public buildings or flats – and the London Underground was a complete no-no. But now, thanks to just four sessions with her hypnotherapist, Jill faces those lifts with impunity – and she’s definitely on the way up. Worthing based hypnotherapist Matt Roberts-Ward explains how hypnotherapy can change our beliefs and

our mindset – banishing those old-established fears for good. “Irrational fears like this are often the result of a trauma someone may have suffered in childhood,” he says. “When you feel fear as a child and you push that fear away, it can come back as a real problem in adult life. Regressing in your mind and confronting those fears in a relaxed environment gives you back the control you believed you’d lost.”Matt has helped all kinds of people conquer a wide spectrum of fears, including a young man who was unable to sleep because he’d convinced himself he would swallow his tongue.

“Once we’d triggered the initial memory from his past, we were on the right track to handle his fear,” says Matt.Giving up smoking, losing weight and cutting down on alcohol intake are all controllable through hypnotherapy. But don’t expect to go into a trance where you won’t know what’s happening – you’ll be awake and conscious of your surroundings throughout. And forget all those cabaret acts you may have seen where people are called up onstage and forced to cluck and strut like a chicken. “Once you’re under hypnosis no-one can make you do or say anything embarrassing,” says Matt. “You’re in

complete control, so there’s nothing to worry about.” And for many satisfied clients, it’s the first step to a bolder future.Call 07955 166426 for session rates and packagesor email: [email protected]

Clay has been known as one of the oldest cosmetic treatments for thousands of years, and for its many benefits in a beauty industry, starting from facial masks to full body wraps. The natural healing properties of blue clay help nourish the skin, reducing blemishes, acne and even reducing eczema. It is naturally anti-inflammatory and helps to renovate the elasticity of the skin. Clay contains beneficial minerals - kaolin, calcium, phosphate, iron, magnesium and zinc which help to regenerate the skin, maintain its youth and elasticity. Many skincare products available on the high street use small

amounts of clay, but did you know that raw blue clay powder is highly effective when simply mixed to a paste with spring water? Simply mix to a smooth non-drip paste then apply to your face. Leave for a maximum of 15 to 20 mins then splash off with clean water. Sutton based company ‘Pure Skin Indulgence’ import the finest blue clay from Latvia. “We use only natural clean resources to create pure skin care products that are not only beneficial to the skin, but also environmentally friendly creating the minimal amount of waste.” The source of blue clay is in the Baltic region of Latvia - from a

small town called Cesis, on the River Gauja Valley. The town is developed as a health region due to it’s natural resources - spring water, and clay that is found near the town. The clay is extracted from a source 20M deep in the earth. The population of the town is only 18 000 people, therefore the pollution of the natural resources is almost non existent. “Here at Natural Skin Indulgence we offer raw blue clay powder for home made cosmetics, facials, body wraps, body treatments etc, and are developing a clay face and body scrub with almonds, and chocolate clay mask.”www.pureskinindulgence.co.uk

Some people come to lose weight, deal with a phobia or maybe give up smoking, others come to deal with unwanted feelings or emotions and a relatively new group of clients ask us to help them to improve their home, working or even their sporting ability. At this time of year we are all looking forward to the spring and summer and at our clinics in Eastbourne and Uckfield, we see many people who are looking to make positive changes to the way they look and feel. Losing weight, giving up smoking and feeling fitter are often top of the list. For so many people

“singing” is not something

that they do or, if they do,

enjoy it. They feel they are

not good enough to sing

with people. I hear the

words “I can’t sing” “I love

singing but I sound awful” “I

would sing but my husband

wouldn’t like it” and so on,

incredibly often. But singing

is something that is available

to everybody and something

that is very important for

our wellbeing. Singing

together in a group can be

a profound and inspiring

experience as can singing

alone.

It is really not that long

ago that a normal way of

socialising would have been

to pick up a guitar or sit at a

piano and everyone would

have had a good sing along.

But the modern age has

disconnected us from this

incredibly important and

joyous practice and now

instead of it being normal

to sing, irrespective or your

ability, it seems so often

to be left up to those who

are deemed to sing “well”.

Emphasised more and

more by the talent shows on

television. The importance of

just singing because its fun

and makes us feel better has

largely been lost.

I feel this is slowly set to

change as more and more

singing groups, community

choirs and people like

myself, who work to break

down the barriers created

around our voices, pop up,

allowing us to find the fun

in singing again. We are

beginning to realise how

it is an important part of

everyones life and wellbeing.

I lead Kirtan (call and

response Sanskrit chanting)

and facilitate a practice

called Voicework, inspired

by “The Naked Voice”. Both

these are a yoga for the

voice, connecting the outer

voice to the inner ‘voice’ of

intuition, wisdom, peace and

centredness. Kirtan is an

ancient practice from India

and has been called the

“yoga of emotions” It comes

from Bhakti Yoga which is

a way of opening the heart

and connecting to the divine

in ourselves and outside

of ourselves through love.

Voicework also seeks to

provide a way to explore our

voice and help us to learn to

love our voice as it is. Using

both these practices we can

then use our singing voices

consciously to transform

emotions and bring us to a

place of peace and stillness.

The voice is the incredible

tool, that not only allows

us to release and connect

to how we feel but also

through the use of mantras

and sounding we can find a

deeper sense of presence

and intuitive living.

I want to invite the everyone

to sing! Don’t worry about

where or how, just sing, go

to Kirtan, sing in choirs or

come to my Voice Circles,

or simply allow yourself to

sing in the shower more

often. As you are driving, or

washing the dishes open up

your voice and let any sound

come out, or sing along

to your favourite CDs. The

more positive the music the

more of a positive impact

it will have. Just don’t hold

your voice back anymore.

In the last ten years I’ve seen a surge of lactose and fructose intolerance patients that are mistakenly diagnosed with IBS. Without the proper test, diagno-sis, treatment or diet strategy, the symptoms won’t necessarily go away. I suspect many people diagnosing themselves with “al-lergies to dairy” could in part be lactose intolerant. To understand what exactly is going on we need to look a bit deeper as many of you are confused! One thing is for sure try not to diagnose your-self as this area is a minefield of mis-information.For more information on up to date research, articles and infor-mation on health and nutrition check out my Facebook page or follow me on Twitter.

What is Lactose intolerance? The ancient Greek physician Hippocrates (born 460 B.C.) first noted gastrointestinal upset and skin problems in some people who consumed milk. However, it has only been in the last few decades that the syndrome has been more widely described by modern medicine. Lactose

intolerance is the inability to me-tabolize the sugar found in milk and dairy products. This is due to a lack of the enzyme lactase. Most adults in northern Europe and North America are able to absorb lactose. However, the majority of the world’s population are lactose intolerant, and as we get older our ability to digest lactose lessens. Globally a stag-gering 70 per cent of adults are lactose-intolerant (Gastroenterol-ogy, 1971; 61: 805-13). Babies’ bodies make lactase so they can digest milk, including breast milk. Premature babies sometimes have lactose intoler-ance. Children who were born at full term usually do not show signs of lactose intolerance until they are at least 3 years old. Lactose intolerance can begin at different times in life. In Cauca-sians, it usually affects children older than 5 yrs old. In African Americans, lactose intolerance often occurs as early as 2 yrs old. Lactose intolerance is more common in people with Asian, African, Native American, or Mediterranean ancestry than it

is among northern and western Europeans. Approximately 30 million American adults have some amount of lactose intoler-ance by 20 yrs old. What are the symptoms? Without lactase, lactose cannot pass through the gut wall into the bloodstream. This accu-mulation of undigested sugar causes gut bacteria to switch to lactose metabolism, resulting in abdominal symptoms such bloating, flatulence, cramps and, sometimes, diarrhoea. Symp-toms often occur 30 minutes to 2 hours after you eat or drink milk products. Causes• Bowel surgery• Infections in the small intes-

tine from viruses or bacteria which may damage the cells lining the intestine

• Intestinal disorders like coeliac disease

• Children weaned in non dairy consuming societies

• A genetic disorder from birth - usually diagnosed in early infancy

LACTOSEIntolerant?Kate Arnold was diagnosed as lactose intolerant about 17 years ago. It took six years to get a diagnosis in the days when she knew nothing of nutrition and health!

Kate’s guide to

LACTOSE TOLERANCE TESTSYou can simply avoid eating foods that contain lactose for a couple of days and then drink

two to three glasses of milk. If you get stomach ache or diar-rhoea within half an hour, you might be lactose intolerant. If you would like it confirmed then the tests available are: The lactose tolerance test.Your doctor/consultant measures your blood sugar levels before and after you drink a liquid containing lactose. The lactose tolerance blood test looks for glucose in your blood. Your body creates glucose when lactose breaks down. For this test, several blood samples will be taken before and after you drink the lactose solution described above. Stool ph.If the stool is acidic this can indicate an infection of e. coli or lactose intolerance. This is done with children born with the condition. The hydrogen breath testThis is the preferred method. It measures the amount of

hydrogen in the air you breathe out. You will be asked to breathe into a balloon-type container, or gastrolyzer. Then, you will be asked to drink a liquid contain-ing lactose. Samples of your breath are collected at set time periods and the hydrogen level is checked. Normally, very little hydrogen is in your breath. But if your body has trouble breaking down and absorbing lactose, breath hydrogen levels increase. There can be issues with getting this test on the NHS as it’s quite expensive and it won’t necessar-ily be the first test your GP will use to diagnose your symptoms. Where do I find lactose? Lactose is also a commercial food additive used for its texture, flavour and adhesive qualities, and is found in foods such as processed meat, sausages, sliced meats, pates, gravy stock powder, margarines, sliced breads, breakfast cereals, proc-essed foods, medications, pre-prepared meals, meal replace-ments (powders and bars), and protein supplements (powders and bars). A comprehensive list includes all these ingredients:AvoidButterButter OilCalcium caseinateCaseinCheese

NB: nearly all prescription medi-cation has lactose in from senna tablets to painkillers. If you are lactose intolerant and are needing daily medication its worth talking to your GP or pharmacist and see if there is another option. Can I supplement with Lactase? When lactose avoidance is not possible, or on occasions when a person chooses to consume such items, then lactase supple-ments may be used. Lactase en-zymes similar to those produced

in the small intestines of humans are produced industrially. The enzyme, -galactosidase, is avail-able in tablet form in a variety of doses, without a prescription. Unfortunately, too much acid can denature it, so it needs to be taken on an empty stomach. Lactase supplementation may have an advantage especially in children where the avoidance of all dairy food might be diffi-cult. However personally for me, I’ve never found this affective in adults although this is about personal choice and what works for you. So what’s Casein?Casein (from Latin caseus “cheese”) is the predominant phosphoprotein in dairy food and accounts for nearly 80% of proteins in cow milk and cheese. It has been documented to break down to produce the peptide casomorphin, an opioid that appears to act primarily as a histamine releaser. One theory is that this casomorphine aggra-vates the symptoms of autism. Autism is complicated and is never caused simply by one problem but generally parents feel their children respond better to a casein free diet. As casein has a molecular structure that is quite similar to that of glu-ten, some gluten-free diets are combined with casein-free diets. Casein is often listed as sodium caseinate, calcium caseinate or milk protein. These are often found in energy bars, drinks as well as packaged goods.

What can I eat?If you cannot eat dairy food for whatever reason you will need to look for alternatives. Twenty years ago it was difficult finding substitutes to milk products but now all supermarkets stock a good range of soya products - go to www. alprosoya.co.uk.Soya products are low in choles-terol, trans fat and high in omega 3, 6, and 9 and help lower serum cholesterol. Rice dream and oat milk are also available in some supermarkets and health food shops if you don’t like the taste of soya. Goat, sheep and buffalo products can sometimes be tolerated better than cows milk, however please note they still contain lactose - many of you are getting confused and think-ing it’s just cow’s milk - its not!. Lactose free milk, yoghurt and cheese are now widely available - go to www.lactofree.co.uk for more information. Most people with low lactase levels can drink 2 - 4 ounces of milk at one time (up to one-half cup) without having symptoms. Larger (more than 8 oz.) servings may cause problems for people with lactase deficiency. However as its so individual it will differ from person to person - I can eat organic butter and feta cheese - I’ve no idea why but I can and that makes life a lot easier for me!

These milk products may be easier to digest• Buttermilk• Fermented milk products,

such as yogurt (particularly organic “ live” yogurt)

• Goat’s milk • Ice cream, milkshakes, and

aged or hard cheeses• Lactose-free milk and milk

products• Soy formulas for infants

younger than 2 years• Soy or rice milk for toddlers

If for whatever reason you are omitting dairy foods from your diet you will need other sources of calcium, so i you use soyal milk, do choose the calcium enriched soya milk. In order of greatest first here are some calcium rich foods to incorporate into your diet. You need 1,200 - 1,500 mg of calcium each day: Calcium sources:WhitebaitCanned sardinesTofuBlack beansPinto beansSpring greensMolassesRaw spinachSesame seedsPrawnsBaked beansCanned pilchardsChickpeasShrimpsCanned salmonAlmonds

New Lactofree vanilla ice cream has the same taste as regular dairy, just without the lactose.

“For the past four years, I have been lucky enough to teach

and lead yoga retreats all over the world. During this time, I

have asked hundreds of people about why they chose to come

on a yoga retreat with me.” Katrina Love Senn

OneTo create a new perspective. If you are experiencing frustration, suffering or feeling a sense of struggle, attending a yoga retreat can help you gain new (and often enlightening) perspectives on life. Being on a yoga retreat breaks your daily habits and routines. At a yoga retreat you will have the luxury of time and space to do things just for you. You can focus on yourself and your needs. You will have time to indulge in long yoga sessions and deep relaxation. You will be able to contemplate what makes you happy and have the time to do it. You can have the time to eat yummy local foods, go for long walks in nature or just

sit peacefully in the sunshine.

TwoTo support a life change or transition.Life is all about change. It is one of the only constants in life and yet for many of us, it can be one of the hardest things to deal with. When our lives change, everything and everyone we know changes too. Retreats help us cope positively with change. If you are reassessing your life in any way; thinking of a career change, moving, going through a divorce or experiencing the loss of a loved one then attending a yoga retreat is a beautiful and healthy way for you to gain deeper understanding, clarity and insight. Going on a yoga retreat can

help build courage and internal strength to help you deal positively with your life change.

ThreeTo facilitate healing and transformation. If you are feeling physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually stressed or burnt out you can pretty much guarantee that you will benefit from going on a yoga retreat. Being on a yoga retreat reenergizes your batteries and will help bring a sense of balance back into your life. Creating balance in your life begins the healing process. As you reconnect back with your inner self you will be able to get clear on your real values, passions and desires. Alignment to who you

really are facilitates and strengthens the healing process. Yes, you can transform your life. You can choose to transform anything in your life and yoga retreats provide a great environment to support you as you do this. Whether you want to change your physical body, your thoughts, your career, your relationships, your health, your bank account or even your waistline. Yoga retreats are a brilliant way to break free of old patterns, release limitations, let go of fear and step into the space of courage and new possibilities. They allow you to go deeper into your yoga practice so that you can find space in your body that will allow you to connect with new opportunities in your life. Let’s be honest, life is stressful. TIPS FOR GARDENERS

Gardening can be addictive for many of us in

Sussex. Take a short walk around Old Town

and you’ll see a plenty of well manicured

lawns and cared for flower beds. As we get

into the spring, with those Bank Holidays

due, everything will start to grow again.

Back Care

Whether you enjoy the rewards of regularly

maintaining a well kept garden or you keep putting off dealing with those unruly flower beds, we all spend more time in the garden this time of year. However as many of us know to our detriment, over enthusiastic gardening can take its toll. It’s all too easy to spend longer than you planned out in the garden and end up aching because of it. “Back specialists see a flood of gardening related aches this time of year,” says James Revell (Doctor of Chiropractic). “As the weather improves many of us end up suffering from gardening for too long in awkward positions.” Gardening is really rewarding

and can be a great activity to help keep us fit. But it is all too easy to overdo it. Take it slowly to start with, until your muscles and joints get used to the increased demands. You can just throw yourself into it and “get it done” but if your muscles and joints are not used to it, then you could end up regretting it. Dr Revell has these top self help tips for our local gardeners:

Take regular breaksDon’t work for more than one hour at a time. This is particularly important if you’re not used to gardening or have a lot of heavy work or bending to do.

Try to keep good postureDon’t hunch over your work. It’s worth sitting, kneeling on a firm rubber mat rather than spending all day bent

over. Your back won’t thank you.

Bend your kneesKeep your back straight and bend your knees when lifting heavy pots etc. Just remember the basics: Back straight, knees bent, tummy tight – it works.

Listen to your bodyIf you start aching then stop, have a good stretch and a glass of water.

We hope you look after yourself whilst you’re enjoying your garden this summer. Take a break when you need to and chill out, after all the gardening will still be there waiting for you next weekend. Information provided by Lushington Chiropractic, 01323 722499 www.chirocare.co.uk.

Well, it’s a good question because the NHS confederation

estimates that there are around 10.5 million people in the UK regularly consuming higher than recommended levels of alcohol. But, does that just reflect a change in the habits of society or could it be a creeping dependency?

It took a while for me to realise I had a problem because I drank excessively for years constantly justifying my behaviour with alcohol as ‘normal’ I just like a drink, what’s wrong with that? But, looking back, a dependency it certainly was. Even though I used alcohol in a managed and organised way, one might even say ‘sophisticated’ it had become very important to me and a part of my very identity. The fact that I regularly drank far more than was healthy was masked by the managed nature of the drinking. Because a part of this pattern involved friends of the same view the normality of this behaviour with alcohol retained a veneer of acceptability.

When does a ‘drink’ become a problem?

However, all that has changed. I no longer see alcohol as remotely necessary though I don’t fear it either. I was able to reach into my own subconscious and alter the beliefs that framed who I really was. Being a therapist helped me to achieve such dramatic and fundamental change as well as to construct a program to help others achieve the same results. Since 2007 I’ve been working with people who had the same issues that I had and initially it was surprising to discover that there were so many who felt exactly the same as I did.People who come to see me weren’t the stereotypical alcoholic. They also weren’t part of the visible downsides of inebriation so often portrayed on our streets late at night or in TV programs about ‘drunken’ Britain. They are people who never allow alcohol to interfere with work, wouldn’t dream of getting behind the wheel of a car and would fall asleep on the sofa rather than exhibit any form of anti-social behaviour. They also enjoy a degree of economic freedom although, even for those who don’t, the affordability

of alcohol is rarely an issue. In short, they are the backbone of the country, the hard working, family oriented Mr and Mrs Normal. Many of these people have serious personal concerns about their use of alcohol and at some point have tried to change without success. Their failure stems from addressing the perceived problem rather than the real one. Alcohol dependency, even when well managed, is emotionally and not cognitively driven so focussing on drinking itself can never achieve complete freedom. In a sense alcohol dependency has nothing to do with alcohol. The well reviewed ‘The Sophisticated Alcoholic’ provides a detailed insight into why such damaging behaviour is so difficult to change and shows how to begin addressing fundamental perceptions that underpin a well established relationship with drink.

to yourselfDiscover the most beautiful

parts of India with local Yoga teacher and Ayurvedic

practitioner, Micha.

Once a year, Micha leads a small group to India,

to experience its true beauty and discover why it holds such fascination for many or us. Along with daily yoga, the trip provides a wonderful opportunity to step back from life and take stock, to relax and enjoy three weeks of spiritual rejuvenation. After a daily massage at a famous Ayurvedic Centre, there’s plenty of time to relax on enchanting beaches and a chance to experience real Indian culture at the most desired place for spiritual teachings at the foot of ‘the’ holy mountain. The schedule is planned for January 2013 and each week sees a varied programme of trips and activities. Learn the basic principles

of Ayurveda, mainly in regards to foods which help to increase your energy and lose weight, if you want to. Gain an easy and empowering understanding of how your body and mind function. Not only will you feel cared for and understood on all levels, but you can expect to feel transformed, rejuvenated and full of energy and enthusiasm knowing what you want from life in a powerful way and ready to embrace 2013! Here some comments from this years’ journey:

This trip for me was very special. It was so much more than just a holiday – it was enriching to my body, mind and soul. Thank you Micha xxx. Jacq, AustraliaMy Indian adventure with Micha was an experience

I’ll never forget. The first week at Nagarjuna Ayurvedic center was the perfect way to arrive in India. The mix of daily massages, yoga, herbal remedies and balanced diet left me feeling healthier and happier and very relaxed. The staff were very caring and Micha’s lessons on Ayurveda gave us more understanding of this ancient healing system. The houseboat trip down the Keralan backwaters was idyllic. Our second week in Varkala was spent doing yoga twice a day and in between sunbathing

and swimming at the gorgeous beach, or prowling the cliff tops for trinkets. In the 3rd week we stayed at the foot of the holiest mountain in India, and I felt intrigued by Ramji’s teachings on Vedanta, the massive Shiva temple and the calm of Ramana Maharishi’s caves. Om Namah Shivaya! Thank you for an incredible experience.Amrita, UKIf you like the sound

Our landscape – the scenery of which

we are so proud – doesn’t just ‘hap-

pen’. Very little of it is entirely ‘natural’-

in fact, most is ‘managed’ by our

farmers and growers and is something

that began with the developing skills of

our ancestors thousands of years ago.

Not so very long ago farmers were being paid subsidies to grub up hedges. The requirement to produce more food dominated; small fields were deemed unviable and hedges were perceived as occupying space that could better be taken up grow-ing food. Bigger fields facilitated the use of the larger machinery that was regarded as time- saving and so more cost effective. Simultaneously, hedges were being lost to make way for motorways and other infrastruc-ture: it is estimated that between 1945-70, no less than 120,000 miles of hedgerow were lost as a result of farming and a further 20,000 miles disappeared as a result of other projects.Latterly ‘reality’ and ‘holism’ have made an appearance (some would say not before time!) One of the drivers is recognition of the important part hedges play in relation to wildlife and the fact that genetic diversity is fundamental, in a wide range of ways, to human health and wellbeing. Today’s farmers develop practices that take account of conservation and biodiversity and we are fortunate to benefit, in so many different

ways, from their work. But farmers and growers are facing enormous challenges posed by the impact of climate change. Whilst we can expect some advantages such as the ability to grow more exotic crops and extend growing seasons, other consequences such as water short-ages and Extreme Weather Events may mean that our farmers are forced to develop radically different practices in order to produce the food we need. The Environment Agency has already warned that it will be impossible to protect all the areas threatened by rising sea levels. Homes and businesses affected by flooding will have to be relocated - thus putting additional pressure on land usage in other areas. At the same time global population is predicted to reach 9-plus billion by 2041 - at the current time it is a little in excess of 7 million. The high percentage of food we currently import will not be sustainable long term and the UK must become more self sufficient. Increases in fuel prices have trig-gered higher road, sea and air transport costs - and even further rises could be on the horizon. In any event, developing countries are un-likely to be able to maintain exports

at their current rate as they struggle to deal with the effects of climate change while simultaneously provid-ing food security for vastly increased populations. Most importantly - we must factor in the impact of carbon emissions created by transporting goods for vast distances. Thus we shall need more homes on less land whilst at the same time producing more food. ‘Land’ – and the way we use it being the crucial factor - we shall need more Landscape Managers. They will be tasked to use their technical and management skills to find sus-tainable solutions that take account of all the factors and issues involved. The discipline of ‘landscape man-agement’ is relatively new - it has existed for less than twenty years - but year on year it is becoming ever more vital. Landscape managers mitigate in order to come up with the best possible solutions. In the very near future, management of the land-scape will become even more chal-lenging - and crucially significant. Hadlow College offers a BSc (Hons) in Landscape Management, the only landscape management course ac-credited by the Landscape Institute. Richard Tilley, who heads up the programme, can be contacted direct on 07905 275413.

I must admit I was a bit nervous at the prospect of interviewing Deborah Meaden. Having been an

avid fan of Dragons Den I won-dered how the interview would go and whether she would display the same characteristics as someone being grilled in the Den, but I needn’t have worried. As Deborah breezed on to the Ploughcroft stand at the recent National Homebuilding and Renovating Show at the NEC, it was obvious that the stern, focused, business woman also had a very friendly approach, happily chatting to the visitors on the stand and laughing with the Ploughcroft employees.Chris Hopkins, founder of Ploughcroft, who recently won the interest of the Dragons with his low carbon technologies and renewable energy company, walked out of the Den with an investment from both Deborah Meaden and Theo Paphitis. To-

day Chris was providing a solar installation demonstration and proudly announced that they are one of a few companies to sup-ply the new 333 watt SunPower panels. After the demonstration I caught up with both Deborah and Chris to find out more about the company and their plans for spreading the message about renewable energy. With so many Solar companies in the marketplace I was keen to find out what it was about Chris’s company that caught the imagination of Deborah. “It was obvious to me that Chris was in it for the long term play, so many companies have set up to make a fast buck but I was looking for someone who had a passion for their business and for renewer-able energy, until I met Chris I had even considered setting up my own company and bringing people together, but Ploughcroft meant we had all the people and

company already set up”“It is also rare to find an invest-ment that is both the right thing to do financially as well as for the environment and Ploughcroft offered both”.Deborah installed her own Solar panels, just before meeting Chris so knew a little about the tech-nology, she was also fortunate enough to have guarantee the 43p fixed feed-in-tariff which she secured for 25 years. Now that the government have dropped this to 21p, I was interested to find out if it was still a good deal for anyone considering solar.Chris and Deborah both agree that the deal is still good, “When I paid for my Solar the installa-tion cost about £17,000, but the same system would cost far less today so even though the fixed feed in tariff has been reduced to 21p it still offers the same rate of return as two years ago.”Deborah explains that the gov-ernment wouldn’t and shouldn’t

With recent confusion over the reduced fixed feed in tariff for Solar installation, Wellbeing magazine speaks to Deborah Meadon from Dragons Den and Chris Hopkins of Ploughcroft to find out more about the benefits of installing renewable energy and to find out if now is still a good time to consider Solar.

support the fixed tariff long term, the idea behind it was to kick start the industry and once that’s done people will realise that it is the right thing to do not just for the financial reasons but for the good of the environment. The only criticism she has is how the government handled the cut in the tariff. “It wasn’t communi-cated well and people suddenly lost confidence.”Although the government are offering 21p, it is forecast to stay until June. The proposal is to reduce to 16p, however Chris is campaigning for it to remain 21p for another year, but both agree that some point in the near fur-ther the government will discon-tinue their support of the fixed tariff, so the next few months still offer a very good reason to install solar. The general perception is that unless you are going to stay in your home long term then it isn’t worth considering, I wondered what Deborah’s opinion was on this. “No one really knows how it will effect the secondary market, but if two properties were for sale on the same street and one had renewerable energies then this house would certainly have the edge over the other property” I tend to agree with Deborah, we bought our house three years ago and the fact that it had solar thermal was a real selling point for me. We turn off our heating in March and all our hot water is provided by the solar panels until September, I only wished that we had a larger roof space to ac-comodate Solar PV as well.During the demonstration I asked Chris if their was a

minimum number of panels to make it worthwhile installing. “I think a minimum of three of the 180 watt panels or perhaps two of the new Sunpower panels is the smallest installation I would recommend, on their website they have calculations from 15 to 30 square meters. We are lucky that our roof is South facing, but what if the roof faces another direction? “South facing, with a 30-35 degree pitch, with no shadow from other building and trees is obviously the best, however East and West is still 86% efficient and north still offers a 60% efficiency”, says Chris. Deborah also points out that you don’t need heat for Solar PV, even on a freezing cold day you can generate electricity, just as long as it is reasonably bright.Since investing in Ploughcroft, Deborah has installed further panels on her outbuildings and even has them fitted on the building housing her pigs, “ I regularly go down and check to see how much electricity I have generated, it is actually quite addictive checking to see how much money I have earned, it’s the easiest money I have ever made.”Our building developer, had the foresight to install Solar Thermal but I wondered if De-borah thought that it should be mandatory for all new buildings to install solar. “Solar may not be the answer, but I think that all renewerable energies should be considered whether it is ground source, wind turbines, air source heat pumps or the new Micro-CHP systems (Combined Heat

and Power), a new technology that Chris is very excited about.”Since winning the invest-ment from Deborah and Theo, Ploughcroft have expanded their business to include other forms of renewerable energy as well as expand to create 8 training sites, meaning that they can now offer installations all around the UK.With the Dragons contacts and Chris’s passion and knowledge he has developed NVQ courses, offers training, is a construction ambassador and is working with schools to educate children about the benefits of careers in this fast growing industry. “When I became a roofer, roofers were classed as the ‘dummies’ of the building trade, but this is chang-ing, we are having to be more knowledgeable and are gaining the respect of the industry”.So with so many Solar compa-nies appearing in this market, why should anyone consider Ploughcroft? Having met Chris and his team, I understand Deborah and Theo’s reason for investing in this company. They clearly have a passion not only the business and the environ-ment but also for doing a job well. His team are first and fore-most very good roofers but with a thorough understanding of this new and growing technology. They take pride in their installa-tions and I know that if I had a slightly bigger roof I would cer-tainly call Chris and his team, but with their other areas of expertise I shall be watching them carefully to see if they have other ideas for replacing my oil tank!

The Science of

It is estimated that the British public spends over £1billion a year on beauty

and anti-aging products and that women alone spend £140,000 in their lifetime on

products that maintain their looks. Beauty products have the power to make people feel good about themselves and can give

an instant confidence boost but do over the counter products really work? With more anti-aging products available on

the market than ever and more women with disposable income, it is important to make sure that our beauty purchases are

informed and beneficial.

COSMETICS

Page 23: May/June 2012 Wllbeing Magazine

Do over the counter creams really help in the battle against age? Unlikely. Despite their alluring packages and dreamy promises, over the coun-ter cosmetics do not affect the inner structure or function of the skin so they just work in a temporary or superficial way. They may create the illusion of less lines or smoother skin but they certainly don’t help reverse the effects of time or have any long-term function. For years cosmetic companies have convinced women through pseudoscience that their skin will look ‘younger’, ‘smoother’ and ‘softer’ but in reality they don’t deliver. Cosmeceu-ticals however are a new generation of products that represent a marriage between cosmetics and pharmaceutics. They describe a group of products that have a known biologic action on the skin that are driven by science and results. They reduce wrinkles rather than merely disguising them. These kinds of products are available for purchase in medical skin clinics rather than over the counter but are often at comparable prices. So if you have lost faith in the cosmetics game and are fed up of the commercial giants who promise younger, healthier skin but never deliver, then why not try some ad-vanced skin care that actually works? Seeing your Cosmetic Doctor would be the best place to start. They can assess your skin type and recommend a programme of active skin care that would best suit you. Cosmeceuticals can roughly be divided into 4 main groups: those that neutralise free radicals in the skin; those that regenerate components of the dermis; those that relax the tiny muscles of the face and those that coax senescent cells from retirement. Vitamin C or L-ascorbic acid helps fight free radicals, protects against UV induced cell damage and is vital in stimulating fibroblasts to produce healthy collagen fibres. Retinoic acid – not a cosmetic but a drug – has been proven to reverse the signs of skin aging and stimulate collagen production and hyaluronic acid levels, both vital for youthful and healthy looking skin. Retinoic is anti-aging’s best kept secret and is the most potent anti-aging medicine available. So if you are serious about anti-aging then why not try some cosmeceu-tical skin care products that are scientifically proven and really work.Dr Johanna Ward Medical Director at The Skin Clinic Sevenoaks. www.theskinclinic.org.uk

Summer is fast approaching and with the prospect of nice warm weather comes

the inevitability of getting your feet out.But if your feet are too hideous for your heels, too scandalous for sandals, or not fit for your flip flops, now’s the time to address the issue and get your feet in perfect shape for summer! Most of us walk between 5,000 – 10,000 steps every day or 75,000 miles in a lifetime, but how many of us really think or address, what happens to our feet on a daily basis?

BUNIONSDon’t be embarrassed…bunions are more common than you think! More than 50% of women in the UK suffer from the condition. It is one of the most common foot complaints and is caused when the bone under the first toe becomes displaced. This causes the big toe to shift towards the smaller toes, causing a bony prominence on one side. Over time these two toes can become crossed. Other symptoms can include swelling and redness and tenderness, which may have an impact on your walking.

The condition is more common in women who wear restrictive shoes such as heels or ones with pointy tips. This is because women tend to have looser ligaments than men. Winter shoes exacerbate the problem as the bunions are kept enclosed and this can restrict peoples’ physical activity. However the condition is mostly genetic.

Surgery to rectify bunions is not suitable for everyone. A key factor into whether someone may need an operation is the level of pain they are

Are your feet ready for summer?

Page 25: May/June 2012 Wllbeing Magazine

Wellbeing 25

experiencing. Another factor will be if the person has started to develop further foot conditions as a result of this condition. If surgery is for you, you will need a period of six weeks to recover, and a further six weeks for the swelling to subside. Summer is the ideal time to recuperate following this procedure due to the requirement of wearing open toed shoes post op and sitting with your feet up. Alternative options include sourcing other shoes that do not contribute to this problem. These would be lower styles, which are also wider fitting.

CORNSCorns occur at the top of your toes or on the outside of the little toe, which experience the most pressure when wearing ill-fitting shoes. The pressure causes a localised thickening of the skin. They can also occur under your foot and in between your toes. They usually develop a root and can become very tender, especially when combined with

swelling, which increases the pressure felt.Corns can also be caused by hammering/clawing of the smaller toes and can be more prevalent in people with thinner skin, bony or deformed toes/feet, and in people who stand up all day.Treatments range from plasters, to the callous being removed by a podiatrist, and in some cases, can be rectified through an operation when it is a reoccurring problem caused by foot or toe abnormalities. The procedure to re align the toe & to prevent reoccurrence is simple, with a recovery time of three to four weeks.

IN-GROWING TOENAILSToenails bear the brunt of your daily activities including running, walking and sport. The symptoms usually include swelling, redness, infection and the toe can become very painful. Sometimes a bump to the toe can change the contours of the nail leading it to become

ingrown. Bunions can also result in this as the big toe puts pressure on the adjacent toe. An ingrown toenail is defined by skin growing over the edge of the nail; this can be on one or both edges. Alternatively the nail can grow directly into the skin and either can result in infection which must be looked at by a professional as soon as possible. They will be able to determine whether or not any underlying problems could be causing the condition, such as an outgrowth of bone beneath the nail, or excess surrounding tissue. As always, proper nail care is a must, and wearing well-fitting shoes will keep your toes in tip top condition.

The London Clinic offers Podiatry assessment and treatment for a variety of foot related conditions. These include foot health checks in diabetes, treatment of ulceration, foot pain and other conditions of the foot and lower limb. www.thelondonclinic.co.uk

Shamanism and healing the soul

WORDS: KATY DUNNE

Shamanism refers to an ancient spiritual understanding of

life rooted in all cultures; it is our natural spiritual heritage. A shamanic practitioner specialises in working with the spirits and life-giving energies within nature, in order to bring about healing and wellbeing. Shamanic healing rebalances the subtle energetic fields of the body, removes spiritual blockages, reconnects us with our innate strength and passion, and restores connection with vital parts of ourselves we may have become disconnected from. The latter is known as Soul retrieval. Shamanism sees all living beings (including the earth herself) as having a soul. When we are in touch with our soul we find

happiness and direction in life, as we know and trust who we were born on this beautiful planet to be. However, the soul is very sensitive, and difficult life events sometimes result in parts of our souls fleeing the body as protection from pain, shock, stress or fear or heartbreak. This is known as Soul loss, and it is the way these beautiful and vital parts of our spirit guard themselves from harm. Usually they return of their own accord when the time is right. However, an ongoing or severely stressful situation (If a situation felt severe then it was - it is not for anyone to judge another’s experience) such as a relationship break up, bullying or violation of any kind, criticism or a even a frightening event as a child, may mean

parts of the soul leave and don’t come back, sometimes for years. The person is often left with an unexplained sorrow, yearning for this missing part of their soul to return. One client described feeling as if she’d ‘lost her spark’. People also describe varying feelings of anxiety, rage, difficulty in moving on from the past, or may simply yearn for a deeper sense of connection and meaning in their life. A shamanic healing goes to the root of these feelings to recover the sacred parts of the soul which may have gone missing. These are then restored to the client, ushering in a renewed sense of wholeness and reconnection to the joy that is all of our birthright. During healing, I use a drum, singing bowl, my

voice, rattle, crystals and sacred stones. There is little physical contact as the healing is conducted energetically, and clients only need talk about what they wish to. My healing practice is fully qualified, confidential, compassionate and experienced.

For testimonials and further information about healings, workshops, shamanic counselling and art see www.liftedspirithealing.webeden.co.uk or call Katy on 07810 868477.

A percentage of takings are donated to Survival International, a charity helping tribal peoples defend their lives, protect their lands and determine their own futures.

Since my healing, I finally feel happy and like myself again after battling

with depression for two years. My one and a half year old daughter who

had healing with me has also been much happier! – Erica

SPOTlightThe Feldenkrais Method® is a way of learning about

yourself through attention to the way you move.

I came to the Feldenkrais Method out of curiosity and decided to do the training primarily for my own self-exploration and development. I have many years experience as an opera director, workshop leader, facilitator and researcher and realised how being a teacher of the Method could build on and benefit from my experience and skills.

Recently working with a group of young opera singers I asked what benefits they found from doing the Feldenkrais sessions. Several spoke of feeling more grounded, taller, finding more spaces to breathe, others said; having more stamina, feeling stronger, sleeping better but the one that really gladdened my heart was “I learnt there is a better way of living, a way where we can be comfortable with ourselves”. Given the extraordinary pressures these young professionals are constantly under I thought this realization was a real gift.

Although my work is mostly with performers I love working with anyone who is interested in learning about themselves and how to enhance their lives whatever their challenges might be. One of my clients calls the work “Assisted self-development!”

I am passionate about gardening, keeping bees & walking the Downs and so have developed workshops for gardeners and walkers! I also deliver Find your Voice workshops for public speakers and INSET for teachers and with vocal coach Marcia Bellamy.

My current series of classes in Lewes is entitled “Giving yourself breathing space”. These sessions will explore how we can breathe more fully. Many people are amazed to discover how flexible their ribs can be, how the whole body is involved in breathing and the pleasure of allowing the breath to

be easy and expansive. Wholesome breathing

helps with general health, good sleep, self confidence and many mobility issues. I also give one to one sessions in my garden studio near Lewes.

Rebecca has taught at the Grotowski Institute in Poland, Westminster Cathedral Choir School, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Warsaw Opera’s Young Singers programme and Music Conservatoires in the UK.If you have any queries or would like to book please contact: 075955 43605 or [email protected]

The Feldenkrais Method® is a way of learning about yourself through attention to the way you move. You can experience it through group classes and/or one-to-one sessions. The group classes are known as Awareness through Movement lessons. Each lesson is structured to lead you to your own

discoveries and experience possibilities of being in the world with greater ease and comfort.

The one-to-one sessions are known as Functional Integration lessons and they work using the same strategies as the Awareness Through Movement lessons, but are adapted to your individual needs and interests. Rather than following verbal instructions, each session is more like a conversation starting verbally but developed through very gentle manipulation.

Limitations in movement or discomfort brought about by habitual patterns or injury can be improved. The intention is to find ways of moving and thinking in order to fulfill your potential. That might take more than one session! But even after one session you may notice significant changes in how you feel, your balance, breathing and flexibility.

To find out more about the Feldenkrais Method please go to the Guild website www.feldenkrais.co.uk

The delicious and unique taste of the Lady Finger Banana means one of the best ways to enjoy them is as nature intended, with nothing added and nothing taken away. Like all the TROPICA products, the Dried Whole Bananas are organic, raw and natural with no additives or preservatives, but be warned because the

bananas combination of amazing flavour and sticky taste mean they’re irresistible and once you’ve had one you’ll find it hard to put the pack down. £2.29 for a 200g pack of approximately 10 bananans. So if you looking for something a little bit why not visit naturboutique.co.uk and give their new range a try.

MULE BARS Here at the Wellbeing Offices we munched our way through a selection of Mule Bars, however the Liquorice, Coconut and Fennel Seed Cereal Bar has got to be my favourite. For all you liquorice, pastis or fennel fans, this is THE energy bar. A lot of feedback from triathletes, cyclists and other long distance people has been that it would be great to have something which isn’t another fruit energy bar. Here’s the first. Liquorice is exceptionally good for the digestive system apart from also being a great healer. To find out more about their snacks and energy drinks mulebar.com
