Thursday, October 20 11:30 am A very special Senior Adult Lunch

as we welcome Dr. Jim Lavender

Mark your calendars for Thursday, October 20th! We are excited to welcome as our guest speaker Dr. Jim Lavender. “Dr. Jim”, as he is most

often referred to, retired this past June as the pastor of Discovery United Methodist Church after serving there for 33 years. Discovery Church, located on Gayton Road in Henrico County, is sometimes called the “zoo church” be-cause of Dr. Jim’s ministry with animals.

Make plans now to attend and hear about his intriquing background as a circus ringmaster who then found his mission in life in creative ministry. Since his retirement Dr. Jim has joined the National Storytelling Network and travels the country telling his favorite tales. He and his wife, Avis, will join us for lunch and then we will have the privilege of hearing his story. Invite your friends to join us on October 20th at

11:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. Additional information can be found at www.drjimlive.com. Copies of a Times Dispatch article on June 19, 2016 featuring Dr. Jim are available in the office on request. The meal will be Roast Beef, Red Skin Potatoes, Broccoli, Rolls and Dessert. Cost is $9.50/person. All are welcome!

Children’s Chatter (from Mrs. Crump)

By now most families have settled into the routine that school brings, started their new fall activi-ties and made a few new friends. We have made a few new friends at May Memorial over the past few months and created some new routines as well! One that I would like to share with you today is that we have reorganized the classrooms behind the Sanctuary. The “nursery” is now across from the water fountain. The “old nursery” will be available for newborns but once these little ones start moving, they will join others in a room that is just for them. We still have a few items to take care of in order to finish this project but it is a welcome (and much needed) update! Stop by and see the change or, bet-ter yet, experience the change by signing up to help in the Nursery (0 – 2 yrs) or Extended Session (3 y – Kindergarten) during the worship hour. Contact Lori Turner [email protected] if you would like to serve in this capacity. As we look to the many events on the calendar this fall, please know we are purposeful in our planning to ensure that children and families will learn and grow in Christ. We seek to build a foundation of faith within our children, to nurture them as they begin their walk with Christ and to make sure they know that their heavenly Father loves them completely and unconditionally. We hope that your family will continue on this journey with us. If you have been waiting to take that step, now is a good time! We would love for you to be a part of our team and I would love to hear from you! Shoot me an email ([email protected]), send me a text or give me a call (804) 839-9248.

A Message from the Wednesday Night Dinner Committee: The Wed. night dinner committee met last week and voted to raise the prices of our meals to $6 for adults and $4 for children, still with a $20 maximum for families. It has been a very long time since the prices have changed, and Martha and Lester would like the opportunity to try some recommendations for different menus. And, as we all know, food prices continue to go up so we are trying to keep it manageable for every-one. Also, starting this week, there will be a simple sign-out sheet in the kitchen for anyone who needs to borrow any kitch-en items. Please just sign out any equipment or kitchen supplies so we will know where to locate something if we need it. This does not apply to paper supplies, etc., just kitchen items. Right now we are currently missing a black coffee maker and a few other small items, so we would appreciate everyone's help with this for the future. Finally, the committee would like to say a huge thank you to Martha and Lester for all their hard work and dedication to this very valuable part of our church fellowship. They work very hard each week to plan, shop, and prepare meals for all of us, and have done a wonder-ful job of reorganizing and maintaining the kitchen for our church. We are blessed to have them and appreciate all they do each week. There are many opportunities to help with Wed. night meals, so please let Martha and Lester or any of the Wed. night committee know if your group or Sunday School class is interested in sponsoring a meal or helping in any way. Thank you - The Wed. Night Dinner Committee Nancy Bennett, Nancy Flower, Heather Martin, & Shelley Shust
