New life in surprising places.
Having the privilege of a beautiful garden and one backing onto fields at that,
the Vicarage is a great place for bird-watching. We’ve had all sorts, from
woodpeckers, chaffinches, goldfinches and wrens. With your hands in the kitchen
sink, it’s possible to see the beauties of many different varieties foraging for worms and other tit-bits. To entice the birds to keep coming, we have a good
range of bird feeders, and nesting boxes in strategic places in the trees and
bushes around the garden. Over the last few years, we have spotted a number of
birds using the nesting boxes – it’s always a thrill to see an adult bird popping in
and out with a worm to feed the chicks, and later, to hear the chatter of fledgling
birds just about to explore the big wide world for the first time. We have learnt to
keep an eye open at each of the carefully positioned boxes ready for the first signs
of new life around this time of year.
e never thought that the new life would emerge from the watering-can hung
on the back of the garage! We were so busy watching the nesting boxes,
bemoaning the lack of obvious activity, that we missed the two robins popping in
and out of the watering-can with worms for their youngsters, just a few feet
outside our kitchen window. What a thrill to discover that there was new life in
the garden – just in the places we didn’t expect! In placing nesting boxes around
the garden, we had sought to control where nests would be built and where new
life would emerge. It just hadn’t worked – because new life is precisely that – new
and with a life of its own.
e live in a culture in which we suppose we can control much of life – but in
fact control often eludes us. New life springs up in the most surprising places, and
if we only look in the places we have prepared in readiness for it, we will miss it.
Surely the Easter message suggests as much. Who would have thought to find
new life in a tomb, of all places?
hat of our own lives? Where are the signs of new life for us? Where do we feel
more hopeful, more inspired, more energized, with a new sense of direction or
purpose? There’s a lot more than pregnancy that creates new life in humans!
Maybe if we struggle to identify any signs of that new life, it’s because we might
just be looking in the expected, and predictable places rather in those surprising
places where we would not expect new life to be found. Often it is the dark and
painful parts of our lives where something surprising in its newness can germ-inate and grow – the experiences we had written off as negative or pointless.

So look around you – where are the ‘watering-cans’ in your life? Keep your eyes
peeled – you might be surprised to find God at work in some very unexpected
areas of your life.
May God bless you in this Easter season – a time when we remember the six
weeks or so during which the risen Jesus appeared to his disciples – in unex-
pected ways. May our eyes also be opened to recognise his presence with us.
St. Mary’s reaches the national press!
Not having much time to read newspapers, I rarely buy them. It is other people
who will say, “I saw you in the local rag last week!”. What it more surprising is when my picture appears in the national press!
ou may have seen in the local papers that a good number of the Yorkshire stone
flags from the ‘ABC steps’ (so called because there were once 26 and children
would recite their alphabet as walking them), which lead from the Church to
Church Lane, have been stolen. As the steps are also locally known as the Church
Steps it tends to be assumed these belong to the church, though this is not in fact
the case. Though this is actually nothing directly to do with the church, it foundits way into the Church Times, a national Church of England newspaper.
But there have been a spate of thefts from the church over the last few months
– a security barrier, first put up to stop unauthorised vehicular access to the rear
of the church, where half of a Yorkshire stone path had been stolen, was removed
in broad daylight. The lightening conductor has been stolen- twice. We have lost
count of the number of times lead flashing has been removed from the church
porch. Even the stumps of railings left in the kerbs of Victorian graves have beengouged out and removed.
e are not the only church falling victim to such mindless criminality, but it is an
ongoing problem. If you see anything suspicious, please call at the Vicarage to
report it or ring the police directly. In a church where we are doing everything we
can to make the church a genuine community space, each incident of this sort
makes our life more challenging, and increases our already hefty insurance
premiums.hank you!

Pentecost Praise at St. Mary’s.
As summer approaches, I have learnt to expect many folk arriving for services to
say, “It’s such beautiful weather, we should have the service outside!” The idea is
indeed a lovely one, and one leaders of the local churches discussed in some
depth in planning a Pentecost Praise service for to beheld here at St. Mary’s. Then the practicalities took over. Not just the unpredicta-
bility of the weather, but the problems with the lack of an adequate sound-system,
especially so close to the noise of the dual carriageway. It would be such a shame
if those dependent on the hearing loop were not fully included, wouldn’t it?
A compromise was struck. Why not hold the service in church, perhaps leaving
as we sing the closing hymn to make our way to the Vicarage garden for a shared
faith supper? It is, after all, the birthday of the church and a party would be afitting celebration of our shared life as Christians in this community. Why not
come and join us? Bring a plate of finger food – sausage rolls, scones, sandwich-
es, buns etc. Tea and coffee and soft drinks will be provided. Put the date in your
diary! And if the weather does turn inclement, we British are great at finding ways
to make sure the party continues unabated, aren’t we?!
Redevelopment – where are we?
Remember the British Rail slogan ‘We’re getting there’? And how everyone ridi-
culed the speed at which they were ‘getting there’? Sometimes it feels like that as we press on towards the redevelopment at the back of the church. But I’mlearning it’s all a matter of perspective! Some people feel that the progress is far
too slow – especially those who now find it difficult – if not impossible- to at- tend church because we don’t yet have toilet facilities. For others, it feels verydifferent – as if we’re rushing into this too rapidly! After all, we’ve managed
without such facilities as toilets, kitchen and the rest for around 1000 years inSt. Mary’s – what’s the hurry? Furthermore, there are some who find the plans
far too radical, others who would do something more adventurous and far-reaching. So wherever you happen to be on that spectrum of opinion, bear inmind others don’t see things the same way.

hat is clear is that we have what has been called a ‘window of opportunity’
with a good sum ring-fenced towards the redevelopment. So we feel the need to
press on steadily before our running costs start eating into this funding.
Following the consultation meetings last September, it was clear to the PCC that
the plans were, in the main, supported, though there were concerns about the
possibility of incorporating a screen into the building to separate worship space
from social and community space; and about the positioning of the font. The
PCC have taken these reflections seriously. Since then they have taken the op-
portunity to visit 3 churches in order to help inform our decision-making proc-
ess, and have looked at a range of pros and cons for the screen.
Recognising the ongoing concerns, but with a wish to explore this further, the
architect has been asked to move from the first stage, of initial drawings, to a
fuller, more detailed design plan, full specifications and the securing of tenders,
together with applying for faculty permission from the Diocese for these propos-
als. We, in the meantime, will be doing what we can to explore grant funding,
which, if we are creating community space, we are hopeful will be forthcoming.
Once we have this more detailed information available to us, and full costing's in
place, we will display what we can, as we did in the first stage, and will call a
further public consultation meeting to answer questions, take soundings and
clarify details. Only once all this has happened will the PCC make final decisions,as you have elected them to do. We intend to keep everyone fully informed and
‘in the loop’. Please ask if you wish for further information.
e are ‘getting there’. Honestly. It takes time in the Church of England because
of the Faculty and legal processes. Frustrating as these sometimes seem, they
are not a handicap – they are our safeguard from doing anything not deemed
to be ‘in keeping’ with a historic, but living, place of community worship. Both
aspects deserve recognition – as a building the integrity of the buildingneeds to be preserved. As a place of community worship it needs to adapt
to the changing needs of the community it serves. The two aspects are in ten-
sion with each other – may God give us grace to walk the narrow path of bal-
ance between them.

What the Bible says about givinghe Bible has a great deal to say about money, our attitude to it and what we
do with it.
2 Corinthians 9:7-8
(NRSV)
God has shown his great love for sinful and unworthy people like us in the life,
death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Having received such unde-served generosity we should be motivated to give generously in response. Weare to be like God - not reluctant givers, but wanting to give generously from all
that he has given us.
God wants us to be generous – not just with our money but with our time, ener-
gy, skills, homes and possessions. If we have received God’s abundant grace
then we all have something to give. Sometimes these other things are harder togive than money.
he apostle Paul encourages the Corinthian Christians to give generously to a
collection for other Christians in great poverty. God’s priorities are that his peo-
ple should come first in our giving: those who teach the word of God (1 Tim
5:17), those in need in our church (James 1:27, 1 Tim 5:8) and those in need in
other churches (2 Cor 8-9). The needs are therefore both the local work of theparish and further a field in the wider church.
Abundantly
he apostle Paul stresses the abundant nature of God’s giving towards us so that we may give abundantly in response.
8/6/2019 May Mag 2011(web)

14
he Old Testament commanded a tithe (10% of income). The New Testament is
far more radical: we are to be generous givers of all we have. Some will give far
more than 10% of their income, others less.
e need to think carefully about what we have been given, what our responsi-
bilities are and how we can give money in the most effective way.
It’s easy to give for the wrong reasons - to relieve our guilt, to avoid other ave-
nues of Christian service, to be seen to be generous by others. The apostle Paul
tells us that God loves a joyful and big-hearted response to all that he has lav-
ished on us.
Thankyou
Please find below a letter given to me by Margaret today,. Jean gave a donation to the church as she does every year and sent this letter which Margaret thought would be nice for you all to read.

well and fighting this awful disease but while she is receiving treatment she isnot able to attend Guides and we all miss her loads. We would like to wish her a speedy recovery and hope she comes back to us very soon.
ithout the treatment pioneered by Cancer Research UK Anne might not bedoing so well. As a thank you to the charity we intend to complete the ‘Race for Life’ in Temple Newsam, Leeds on 26 th June in Anne’s name. We are hoping that
Anne will be at the finish line to meet us and then we are hoping to get together for a big celebratory picnic (weather permitting). If any of the female members
of the church family would like to join us in our 5km walk (either in Anne’s nameor with someone else in mind) they are most welcome. We are hoping to takea large group of children so any adults willing to support us and participate
would be very helpful. If you are interested please contact Vikki on 07841513530.hank you.
