Ourdriving school matches each student to an instructor to provide one-on-one on-trackinstruction in order to help you improve your driving ability. No matter how much orhow little experience you have behind the wheel, on the street or on the track, ourdriving schools will make you a better driver.

Whether your goal is to learn to drive more safely and confidently on the street or thetrack, our program is custom tailored to each participant. Your instructor will assessyour skills, set priorities, and work with you in the car.

Our school is one of the finest and safest in the country thanks in large part to ourexperienced instructors and our choice of Mid America Motorplex (MAM) as our hosttrack. ULTIMATE PEDALSCamp Courageous Car ShowSunday, May 16, 2010 by David Brighton

The Iowa Chapter BMW CCA will be attending the 2010Cruisin’ for Camp Courageous Car Show near Cedar Rapidsas a spectator event/club outing. There will be twocaravans/drives that will begin in central and eastern Iowa,eventually converging at Cedar Ridge Winery for a briefgathering and dutch treat lunch before continuing on to the CarShow.

The central Iowa leg of the caravan will begin at EuropeanMotorcars in Des Moines at 8:00 am. The eastern Iowa leg ofthe caravan will begin at Zimmerman BMW at 10:00 am.

Cruisin’ for Camp Couragous is one of Iowa’s largest charitycar shows. Presented by the Cedar Valley Street Rods, thisannual event attracts hundreds of cars from across thecountry.

The event opens to the general public at 10:00 AM and runs to4:00 PM. The afternoon activities will include a huge silent andlive auction, kids games and activities, food, music, and muchmore! There are many vehicles to see and fun for the entirefamily.

Proceeds from this event will benefit Camp Courageous ofIowa, a year-round recreational facility for individuals of allages with disabilities. The camp operates on donations,without government support, formal sponsorship, or paidfundraisers. Over 5,000 individuals with disabilities are servedeach year.

Annual Dinner Recap by David Hanf

On February 27, 2010, the faithful gathered for the Iowa Chapter’sAnnual Meeting and Dinner. The evening started out with the socialhour. Members had a chance to have a drink, get reacquainted,sample the hors d’ oeuvres and check out the door prizes.

President, Fred Bell, welcomed the crowd and introduced the boardmembers and thanked outgoing board member, Kevin Wake. Healso informed everyone of two things to be celebrated that evening.The Club’s 10th Anniversary and the fact that it hadn’t snowed inover a week.

After a great International Buffet Dinner, Bob Oliver from NorthlandTravel did a great job presenting the itinerary of “The Spirit of BMW”Germany Tour coming up this September (now postponed to spring2011).

Fred Bell then recalled how the club came tobe reestablished a decade earlier and had thecharter members in attendance stand up andbe recognized. Besides Fred, the other chartermembers present were Denny Dolmage,Dennis Ricketts, Roger Sitterly, DavidTrachtenberg, Jon Volz, and Kevin Wake. Thiswas a great lead in to the guest speaker of thenight, former president of the National BMWCCA, Scott Blazey, who was a great help ingetting the club up and running. Scott recalledthe club’s early years and kept the crowdentertained with stories of his manyexperiences participating in a variety of clubevents and other BMW related activities.

David Trachtenberg conducted the “Member Participation Drawing”and Mike Williams took home the prize of a free registration for theLongest Day Driving School this coming June. Mike said he woulduse it to see how well his new 335 does on the track.

Fred Bell presented the “Cutting it a Little Fine” trophy to DanaSchrader for his encounter with a deer while driving his BMW. Whatmade Dana the most deserving of the trophy was the fact that theBMW he was driving was a motorcycle.

David Brighton was in charge of the door prize drawings throughoutthe evening and every member left with a prize. Our generoussponsors deserve a big thank you for donating the door prizes.Please keep them in mind when you need merchandise or service.

Oktoberfest 2010 at Elkhart Lake and Road America!August 23-28, 2010

If you’re serious about the BMW lifestyle and are in need of

a little blue and white “immersion” therapy, then get ready to

hit the road—Road America, that is! It’s time for BMW CCA’s

Oktoberfest 2010. This year we’re heading for Wisconsin,

and Road America, the legendary race track in Elkhart Lake,

Wisconsin.

Why Road America? “Because our members are passionate

about driving,” says Frank Patek, Executive Director of the

BMW CCA, “we chose a location with great scenery, winding

roads—and a legendary track.” BMW CCA members from all

over the country will converge on tiny Elkhart Lake in

August— August 23 through 28, to be more specific—for

O’Fest 2010.

Monday kicks off with an evening beach party, where you

can meet your competition for Tuesday’s concours

d’elegance. On Wednesday, get ready to hit the accelerator!

From that point forward, it’s all about driving: rallying, car-

control clinics, the gymkhana, driving schools, autocross,

and BMW CCA Club Racing. Representatives from BMW NA

and the BMW Performance Center will be with us all week.

That means test drives in the latest and greatest Munich has

to offer and the chance to catch a ride around a legendary

track in some legendary race cars.

Not enough for you? No problem: Just plan to arrive early

and attend the ALMS race weekend, August 20–22. There

you can cheer on the BMW-Rahal Letterman racing team,

along with their other great fans, in the BMW CCA-hosted

corral. If you want to meet the drivers, mechanics, and

others from the race team, our corral is the place to be!

Spring Tech Session RecapOn March 20, 2010, a wonderful group of mostlyeastern Iowa BMW CCA members gathered atZimmerman BMW in Cedar Rapids for our Spring TechSession. David Brighton’s technoviolet M3 was placedon a hoist and used to demonstrate spring maintenanceitems. Spark plugs, oxygen sensors, air filter, oil filterand transmission filter changes were discussed andlocated. Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmissionfluid, and differential fluid were located and opinionsabout types of fluids were discussed by the group.David also demonstrated some of the common garagetools needed to complete each fluid change. It was agreat turn-out with many new members in attendance.Thank you to Zimmerman BMW for providing garageand hoist space.
