Inmymessage lastmonth, I highlighted themanyeventsthatSEAOIwasfeaturinginApril.Thenexttwomonths,whichmarkstheclosureof our fiscal year and thepreparation for thenewyear,aredefinitelyquite intense too.OurBoard isworking on a transition to the newBoard.Our newdirectors andofficerswill be
appointedafterourmembers’votesarecountedandwillbeinstalledinJuly.YouwillhavethedetailsonwhoislookingtojoinourBoard,andIhopeyouwillhaveamomenttoreadabouttheminthisBulletin andsend in yourballotson time tobe tallied.SEAOI is facingnewchallengesinprovidingourmembersandtheentireengineeringcom-munitywithgreatcontinuingeducationincludingaRefresherCoursethatisconstantlyupdatedtocurrentcodeanddesignstandardsandalsowelldesignedtobedeliveredonline.
InMaywewillbealsostartingcallingonmemberstostartthinkingaboutrenewingtheirmembershipearlyandhopefullyaboutconvinc-ingacoworkeroracolleaguetojoin.Atrecentevents,Inoticedmanynewfaces,andthatisveryencouragingforthefuture.WearealwaysopentonewpeopleandnewideasthatcanmakeSEAOIabetteror-ganizationthroughparticipationtoourprogramsandeventsandbyjoiningoneofourcommittees.IwanttotakethisopportunitytothanktheMembershipCommitteethatundertheleadershipofDerekBoeldthas reviewed relevant data about our approximately 800memberstounderstandhowwecanattractmorepeople.Publicrelationsandcommunicationarethefirststepstogetpeopletoknowmoreaboutwhatwedo.TheMembershipcommitteehaspreparedaninformativepresentationaboutSEAOIthatwillbefeaturedatourmajorevents.
Theawardcommitteehasselected14finalistsfortheExcellenceinStructuralEngineeringAwardswhowillpresenttheirprojectsinfrontoffivehighlyqualifiedjudgesfromthedesignindustry:engineeringandarchitecture,themedia,government,academiaandtheconstructionindustry.ThepresentationswillbefeaturedonMay2atPetterino’sinaroomthatcanhostalargergroupcomparedtoourdinnermeetingvenueandinaspacethatiswellsetupforpresentations.TheExcellenceinStructuralEngineeringAwardswillbecommunicatedtothewinners,togetherwith the JohnF.ParmerAward, theSEAOIServiceAwardand theOutstandingYoungEngineerAward, at theannualbanquetthatwillalsokick-off thenewfiscalyear
on June 3 at theCrownFamilyGreatHall,onthe9thfloorofVenueSix10.
TheExcellence in Structural EngineeringAwards and the banquetrepresent the yearly celebrationofSEAOIMissionof “ChampioningexcellenceforitsmembersinthepracticeofStructuralEngineering.”Thisyearsubmissionsareclearexamplesofstructuralengineeringatthehighestlevel.Thiseventtogetherwithmanyofoureventsandprogramsaregearedtofulfillourvisionthat“StructuralEngineerswillbeleadersininnovationofthebuiltenvironmentwhileadvancingtheprestigeof theprofession.” Iwantedto takethisopportunity togetyourattentiontoournewlyupdatedMissionandVisionstatementsthatalsorepresentthefirststepintheimplementationoftheStrategicPlanthatwehaverecentlycompleted.Thisplananditsimplementationwillaccompanyusintheyearstocome.
IwouldliketopubliclythankourGovernmentAffairsCommittee(GAC)fortakingtheleadonrelaunchingtheSEAOIGovernmentAffairsSpringLuncheononApril21. InthegoodtraditionofSEPAC,nowGAC,wefeatured a high-caliber speaker, Illinois Director of TransportationRandyBlankenhorn.Hesharedhisvisiononthepresentandthefutureofinfrastructureinvestmentandconstructioninourstatewithalargegroupofourmembers,andwhileheprobablydidnotboostthegreatestoptimismonthefutureofourstate,hewascertainlyabletostiralivelydiscussionwiththemembersandtheotherspresent.

Michael Murphy (Interviewer): Why did you choose engineering as a profession?
Kevin Conroy (Interviewee): AslongasIcanremember,Ihadaninterestinbuildingsandconstruction.Myfatherwasasuperintendentwithaconstructioncompanyandworkedonanumberofhigh-risesinChicago,soI’msureitisinmyblood.AsIgrewup,Irealizedthatoneofthebenefitswastheabilitytobeapartofsomethingthatcanlastlongafteryouaregone.Thereisarealattractiontobeingabletopointtoabuildingandsay,“Ihadapartinconstructingthat.”
MM: What did you want to be before you grew up?
KC: Iwentthroughthetypicalprofessions(i.e.,trainconductor,policeofficer,firefighter,etc.)asayoungkid.Isee
itinmysonrightnow,aslastmonthhewantedtobeatrainconductor,butnowheisinthepoliceofficerphase.I’msurehewilltransitionrightintoafirefighterinthenextcoupleofmonths.Itwasn’tuntilIgotolderandstartedworkingonprojectswithmyfather,thatIunderstoodmyspecificinterestinthebuildingindustry.
MM: What is the best professional lesson you have learned during your career?
KC: Remainhumbleinyourcareer.Thereisaphrasethatsays,“itisnotwhatyoudon’tknowthatgetsyouintotrouble;it’sthethingsthatyouknowforsurethatdo.”Beopentocriticismandsolicitfeedbackfromothersonhowyourdesignorprocessescouldbeimproved.
MM: What piece of advice do you wish you would have known at the beginning of your career?
KC: Don’tbeafraidtoaskquestions.Ihavebeenfortunatetoworkwithsomeverytalentedandbrightpeople.WhenIwouldgethunguponaproblem,Isoughtthemout,andtheywouldworkthroughtheproblemwithme.Makesurethatyoureachouttopeoplethatknowmorethanyou,admitthattherearepeoplethatknowmorethanyouandlearnfromthem.
MM: What is one of the favorite projects you have been involved with during your career? And why?
KC: MyfavoriteprojecthappenstobethefirstoneIworkedonaftercollege.Theprojectinvolvedrepairstoacollegefootballstadium.Myinvolvementenabledmetoseechallengesthatresultedinconstructionproblems,andIlearnedfromthatexperience.Iamnowcurrentlyinvolvedwitharepairprojectatthesamefacility,anditissurrealtoseeworkthatIdid15yearsagoandhowtherepairsareperforming.
MM: What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? And why?
KC: SinceIwasincollege,investinghasbeenabitofasidehobbyforme.Ifindthestockmarketfascinating,andbeingsometypeoftraderwouldbeideal.Iliketoresearchandlearnaboutcompanies,newtechnologiesandbusinessapproachesandhowtheyrelatetotherealworld.Whileitmayinvolveluckthatisoutsideone’scontrol,Ibelievethatacompanywithgoodfundamentalswillalwaysperformwellinthelong run.
