Community Information SessionAgenda
Welcome/Introduction: David Wise and Councillor Qadri
Overview : Kathy Rygus, Planner, City of Ottawa
Transportation: Robert Vastag, Stantec
Question & Answer Session
Wrap-up
• Johnwoods Street was the subject of community concern over the past 10 to 15 years due to perceived volume and speed
• Problem arose from underdeveloped arterial road network between Carp Road and Terry Fox Drive
• Construction of Huntmar Drive and the Hazeldean Road widening reduced reliance on Johnwoods Street
• Through Fairwinds West and Poole Creek Village subdivisions, Rosehill Avenue will be extended through to Johnwoods Street
• Future extension of Maple Grove Road to Stittsville Main Street, the Stittsville Main Street Extension, and the North-South Arterial will add more capacity, making Johnwoods Street less attractive
Overview
• Kanata West Concept Plan road network was designed so that Johnwoods Street could regain its intended local function
• Through Mattamy’s subdivision application for 33 Johnwoods Street, Planning staff saw an opportunity to re-examine the use of Johnwoods Street and provide a unique pedestrian/cycling corridor from Rosehill Drive to Maple Grove Road
•The street would provide a benefit to the community, supporting active transportation
• The street would remain as an open road allowance and provide access to municipal and utility vehicles for servicing and maintenance as needed
Overview (cont’d)
• Through the Conditions of Draft Approval for the Fairwinds West subdivision, Mattamy is required to convert the segment of Johnwoods Street between Rosehill Avenue and Maple Grove Road to a pedestrian/cycle corridor
• The timing specified in the Draft Conditions is that construction of the pathway would take place only after Rosehill Avenue and Santolina Street were open to traffic
Subdivision Conditions and Timing
Public Comments
• Additional traffic will be diverted to Rosehill Avenueand Huntmar Drive
• Maple Grove Road connection to Stittsville Main Street is needed first
2002 Transportation Network2008 Transportation NetworkFutureTransportation Network
• Reduces the infiltration issues by creating a circuitous route between Hazeldean Road and Huntmar Drive
• Reduces the potential for speeding by shortening Johnwoods Street
• Reinforces the hierarchy of the surrounding roads while permitting Johnwoods to operate as intended which is to facilitate local traffic
• Creates an accessible pedestrian and cycling facility
Transportation Implications - Johnwoods
• Rosehill is a collector road designed to accommodate 1200 – 1600 vehicles (two-way) per hour.
• Rosehill is projected to carry approximately 450 vehicles (two-way) per hour, which is well within the capacity of the road
• The Johnwoods repurposing / closure is expected to add roughly 50 additional vehicles (two-way) per hour to Rosehill which represents a 15% increase
• With the Johnwoods repurposing, future volumes along Rosehill are projected to remain well below the capacity of the facility
Transportation Implications - Rosehill
Traffic calming solutions along Rosehill Avenue could include intersection narrowings and pedestrian crosswalks.
ROSEHILL AVENUE
Intersection Curb Narrowing
At-Grade Pedestrian Crossing
Raised Pedestrian Crossing
The proposed traffic calming measures are subject to City technical review, public feedback, and agreement from affected developers. The proposed traffic calming measures are subject to change.
Potential Mitigation: Traffic Calming
