Albion

Yennadon is located in north Maple Ridge, centered on what was once called the Lillooet Road but is now known as 232nd Street. It began as a scatter of farms and small mill operations clustered around the North and South Lillooet rivers [now Alouette].

Yennadon was formerly called “South Lillooet” but when Canada Post was about to

assign a post office there, it was decided that there was one “Lillooet” too many. The name “Alouette” was chosen for the river, but the choice of postal name was left to the first postmaster who chose the name of “Yennadon Manor” which was the grand house of the town of his birth.

Yennadon was known as a recreation centre due to its

pleasant location on and between the two rivers. Families from the city would keep a summer home there and it became a centre for equestrian pursuits when the Hitching Post opened in the late 1940’s. Maple Ridge Park has been a popular picnic destination since the earliest days of Maple Ridge.

Albion was named in 1907 by a short term resident – an American – who suggested the name in discussions over what the post office was to be called. Formerly known as “East Haney”, Canada Post required a name more different from the existing “Haney” post office. The reason why the residents thought the suggestion of

“Albion” was a good one is lost to the mists of time. Albion is the ancient name for England.

The first settler in Albion was Sam Robertson, a Scot, who took up the land east and south of Kanaka Creek with his native wife, Julia. He had already served two years at Fort Langley and during that

time, he had come across the river and planted fruit trees in every natural clearing he found. Thus, his land had the first bearing fruit orchards in all of British Columbia.

Brookside Realty 604 467-5000 Helping you is what we doTM

One of the first European settlers in the district was John McIver, a Scot, who homesteaded the land now known as the Maple Ridge Golf Course. As his property included a fine ridge topped by Maple trees, McIver called his farm “Maple Ridge”.

By 1874, several small communities had sprung up, consisting of a few families each, on the north side of the Fraser River in the areas that would become the Ridge, Haney, Hammond, Pitt Meadows, Whonnock, Ruskin, and Albion. One of the problems of small isolated communities is that they tend

to stay small and isolated unless some means is found to build roads between them.

It was with this problem in mind that a group of forward-thinking men gathered at McIver’s farm to discuss incorporating the whole district between the Pitt River and the Stave to allow taxation for road building. The name for the district was taken from McIver’s farm and so we became “Maple Ridge” in 1874.

When the district incorporated in 1874, the total population was about 20 families with the majority located between Hammond and Kanaka

Creek. The closest thing to a centre was the area that is now the foot of Laity Street where it meets River Road. This is where the first post office was established in 1876 with the name “Maple Ridge Post Office”. All settlers had to travel to this location to get their mail, likely via the Dewdney Trunk, which was the first trail/road to traverse the district, or the Fraser River. Although the official name was “Maple Ridge”, most residents shortened it to “The Ridge”.

Maple Ridge Neighbourhood aka “The Ridge”

The Hammond brothers arrived in western Canada in 1863. They first purchased land on the Pitt River at its confluence with the Alouette – a property later called Codd

Island. After a few years, they purchased land on the Fraser and following Thomas Haney’s line of thought, they applied to have a townsite on their property as well. Today we

see Hammond and Haney as only a few minutes apart but in those days, they were separated by several miles of treacherous river bank or a long way around. Once the CPR

was completed, people took the train between the communities.

When Port Hammond was first developed, it was thought it would be both the terminus

for the CPR and the major deepwater port for the region. The port soon moved to New Westminster and the terminus to Vancouver.

Brookside Realty 604 467-5000 Helping you is what we doTM

Now a separate city, Pitt Meadows was a part of Maple Ridge from 1874 to 1896. Wellington J Harris, who made his home in Pitt Meadows, was the first Reeve of the incorporated municipality. The earliest settlers in Pitt Meadows were Royal Engineers who had been discharged in New Westminster in 1863. The next batch of settlers arrived in reaction to news of the impending start to the Canadian Pacific Railway with Wellington J. Harris being part of that group.

Pitt Meadows was attractive due to its agricultural potential and its proximity to New Westminster but its drawbacks were also very clear. It was low-lying and marshy and a great deal of work in the form of dyke-building needed to be done. Heroic efforts – first utterly by hand and later with steam powered dredges – and with very little assistance from any level of government, produced the first dykes in the region.

The dykes produced by 1894 were insufficient to hold

back the floods of that year. Hundred-year flood levels easily over-topped the dykes and destroyed them completely.

The devastated farmers decided that they would likely get more attention and assistance from the provincial government as an unincorporated district and in 1896, Pitt Meadows formally seceded from Maple Ridge. It was not until 1914 that Pitt Meadows was incorporated as a municipality in its own right.

Ruskin began as an idealistic co-operative community based on the writings of British essayist, John Ruskin. The co-operative located at the mouth of the Stave River soon failed and all of its assets purchased by the E. H. Heaps company which had provided

much of their mill equipment. The original families stayed on and by 1897, had established a school and in 1898, a post office. Though “Ruskin Mill” was soon gone, the Ruskin name had been attached to school and post office and so became permanent.

Ruskin became a centre for hydro-electric power when the first dam was created on the Stave River in 1913—14. It was also a centre for logging with Heaps’ operations supported by a logging railway.
