It was temporarily converted into a covered hopper with the addition of a bright yellow fiberglass “Hopper Topper.” These cars essentially became grain hoppers, and were implemented by Chessie System, Conrail and other roads in the 1970s to help meet demand during seasonal increases in agricultural production and other commodities.

This 34’ wood sheathed caboose with straight cupola is Morency Orange with Mineral Brown roof and runs on Bettendorf Swing Motion trucks. Built in 1943 through the conversion of a 30-ton wood sheathed boxcar, it received the green maple leaf logo in 1955 and served through the early 1980s.

Originally built for Northern Pacific in 1955, it was named “Yellowstone River.” In 1971 the car received the Burlington Northern two-tone green scheme, and a year later was painted in the green and white “Hockey Stick” scheme which lasted until 1995.

These 40’ wood reefers are brown with yellow sides and run on Bettendorf trucks. Built in July 1931, this wood-sheathed ice reefer was used well into the 1950s. Gustavus P. Swift was an influential figure in the development of the refrigerator car for shipping dressed meat. Before the mechanical reefer, wood construction was preferred over steel because wood was a better natural insulator and would not rust from melting ice.

Southern Pacific® coverted this 50’ box car with plexi-glass on one side and standard solid steel on the other. It became known as the ‘Impact’ car used for freight protection instruction - switchmen and trainmen oberved the effect of coupling whne speeds exceed the safe limit of 4 miles per hour or more. To demonstrate the impact, loose skids, cartons, or barrels would be placed inside the car and a ‘handling thermometer’ measures the damage. an impact speed indicator (speedometer) mea-sures the coupling speed.
