Strasenburgh Planetarium, Rochester Museum & Science Center. The past year has
been a time of magnificent discovery in the exploration of space. We have beautiful
close-up pictures of a comet as it passed near the Sun, mysterious features on dwarf
planet Ceres, a steady stream of new vistas from Mars, and, of course, our first look
at Pluto and its moon Charon. Steve will present a colorful and informative slide

4:00 pm – *“UR” In Tune Lecture: Music and the Cold War with Lisa Jakelski, Assistant
Professor of Musicology Eastman School of Music. What roles did music play in the
Cold War? The conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union impacted
musical life in the two superpowers as well as the regions that lay within their
spheres of influence. This talk will discuss classical music and jazz from the United
States, the Soviet Union, and Poland, exploring how music was implicated in
cultural diplomacy, linked to official state policies, and capable of becoming

UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
Art Masterpieces in Depth
Tuesdays, April 19 – May 17 at 2:00p.m.
Sometimes works of art are so familiar that it is hard to see anything new about them. This
course will take a closer look at some famous works of art and maybe discover something new
in them that you have never seen before.
Susan Nurse was the Visual Resources Coordinator at the Memorial Art Gallery for 17 years.
She coordinated the Slide Library, which also comprises digital images. She also managed the
Library and Archival Photography. She has a Masters in Art History from the University of
Buffalo. Susan has lectured at the Gallery’s Creative Workshop, RIT Osher Center, and SUNY
Brockport.

Eugene O'Neill, America's Greatest Playwright: His Life and Times
Rescheduled date: Thursday, May 19th at 2:30pm
The Course will offer a study of O'Neill's troubled life, his failures and successes, and the plays
he wrote that changed the character of America's theater. The course will also present a study
of some of his greatest plays and is part of the series on America's Writers who won the Nobel
Prize for Literature.
Rufino Pabico, MD was the medical director of the Nephrology Clinical Laboratory and the
Nephrology Transplantation Program, as well as the Associate Chief of the Nephrology Unit at
the University of Rochester Medical Center. Upon retirement, Dr. Pabico has pursued his life-
long interests in Humanities, specifically Literature and History. He continues to participate in
the activities of the Division of Medical Humanities and the History of Medicine Programs at
URMC. Dr. Pabico has been happily married for over 40 years and has two daughters and two
grandsons.

LIFE LONG LEARNING COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Climate Change: Origins, Consequences, and Solutions
Mondays, May 2nd – June 6th at 2:00pm
This seminar will examine the scientific findings about the warming of the planet, what the
effects of that warming are and might become, how nations and individuals are responding,
and actions that governments, businesses, and individuals could take to soften the impacts.
Dr. Beth Vanfossen is a retired university professor most recently employed at Towson
University in Maryland. Her doctoral training was in the field of sociology. Her 40 years of
academic work encompassed both teaching and quantitative research, resulting in several
books and a number of research articles in professional journals. Since retirement and after
moving back to the Rochester area in 2007 with her husband Lewis Neisner, she has been very
active as a member and course leader at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at RIT. Her
interest in climate change flourished at that time, and since then she has led a variety of
courses at Osher, including the issues posed by climate change.

Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph V. Stalin: A Partnership of Necessity and An Alliance of Convenience. Wednesday, May 11th at 4:00pm This Presentation will explore the evolution of the "uneasy but deep friendship"
between the leader of the Capitalist world and the leader of the Communist world
during the Second World War. Their Meetings, together with the British Prime
Minister, Winston Churchill, at Tehran in 1943 and at Yalta in 1945, would
define the management of the final phase of the War against the Axis Powers,
and the re-organization of Post war Europe .
Rufino Pabico, MD was the medical director of the Nephrology Clinical Laboratory and the
Nephrology Transplantation Program, as well as the Associate Chief of the Nephrology Unit at
the University of Rochester Medical Center. Upon retirement, Dr. Pabico has pursued his life-
long interests in Humanities, specifically Literature and History. He continues to participate in
the activities of the Division of Medical Humanities and the History of Medicine Programs at
URMC. Dr. Pabico has been happily married for over 40 years and has two daughters and two
grandsons.

by the likes of Dorothy Parker, Phyllis McGinley and Ogden Nash? Where did it go? Rochester
author and editor Melissa Balmain will discuss light verse, past and present, and share work by
some of the funniest poets being published today.

Curt Smith, former Speechwriter for President George H. Bush, author of 16 books, and
Gatehouse media columnist, will speak about the 2016 presidential election, with the
campaign about to enter a decisive stage. With upcoming primaries in states like California,
can any Democrat stop Hillary Clinton? Can Donald Trump end doubt about his candidacy?
Will Republicans have a brokered convention? Mr. Smith will discuss issues and answer
questions from the audience.
