Origami+ The Origami Group would like to thank all of you for your tremendous support over the last year. We have had so much fun making cards, luminaries, flowers and boxes and you have supported us through it all. This year our group has been able to donate $5,000.00 to the City Club’s Operating Fund, in great part due to your support. We will not be showing any of our wares over the summer but if you need anything in particular we’ll be happy to show you what we have. Rachael, our receptionist, can help you if we are not available. If you have any interest in joining our group, our meetings are usually on the first Monday of the month at 10 a.m. You may contact Millie Empedocles at dturner76@comcast.net for further information. Bridge Classes – Supervised Play I will be offering three single session Supervised Play classes on the 2nd Wednesday of May, June, and July from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. The dates are: May 13 June 10 July 8 The charge per session will be $10 for members and $15 for non-members and you may sign up at the front desk. From Your President Fellow Members of the Ann Arbor City Club, It is with delight that I greet you at the start of a new year to let you know how much I look forward to sharing lunches, dinners, classes, bridge games, trips, book discussions, parties (both patio and otherwise), holiday events, terrific speakers at Lunch & Learn and Dine & Discover; an Afternoon Tea (or two); and so much more with you and your guests as we make our way to Spring of next year. Ann Arbor State Bank has renewed our mortgage, which ballooned this year, with additional funds to complete capital improvements to our property as outlined at the special meeting in February. All of this with favorable terms that exemplify their support in the mission of this institution and their faith in the gains we have exhibited over the last several years. May brings us both a Lunch & Learn and a Dine & Discover event, the last of each until Fall; Mother’s Day Brunch, Classics at the City Club, our annual car show; guided tours of the DIA (Rivera/Kahlo Exhibit) and the Michigan Theater; the Grounds Committee’s Flower Sale; and the Annual Meeting and Luncheon for City Club Duplicate Bridge. Or it could be a pen or hat, a sign or book or toy. You get the idea. It’s the story that matters. You’ll have five minutes to tell the story. There’s no reading or performing; this is amateur storytelling. You are welcome to just look & listen without having something to show & tell, but when you start hearing other stories, you’ll wish you brought something!

Member Club News ANN ARBOR SOCIETY FOR MUSICAL ARTS 50th Anniversary Gala “Garden Party” Dinner & Concert at the Ann Arbor City Club Friday, May 15, 5:30 p.m. with Bolcom & Morris, SMA Competition Winners Kenneth Fischer, Master of Ceremonies Summer hats and festive summer clothing are encouraged. Black tie optional. Also celebrating . . . The gift of a brand-new Yamaha grand piano to the Ann Arbor City Club from SMA and Friends. This piano has been tested and gets an “excellent” rating from William Bolcom and members of the UM piano faculty. It is being funded by the SMA and individual donations. You are cordially welcome to attend the seventh annual City Club Car Show, held from Noon until 4 PM on Saturday, May 23rd, rain or shine. Admission to the viewing public is free. Refreshments and food will be available for sale. It is fun for the whole family. So bring all those kids, grand kids, aunts, uncles, parents, other relatives and your friends along! Come see the fine collection of classic, sporty, unusual and rare collectible cars, trucks, motorcycles and any other diverse vehicles that participate. And if you own a favorite vehicle of your own, then please consider entering it in our show. As we did last year, we are again inviting people with collectible vintage bicycles to enter too! (Bicycles are welcome at no charge.) All automobile, truck and motorcycle entrants who register before May 17th receive a laminated vehicle biography. Plus you get a shot at winning some nifty door prizes too and you get to participate in our zany car trivia quiz. All this for only $15! ($20 after May 20th.) Car Show Registration forms are available on the City Club web site or at the front desk. We always can use extra volunteer help on the day of the event. Seventh Annual City Club Car Show “The Show under the Shade”

Saturday, May 23 • 12 p.m. - 4 p.m.

Dr. Peter Sweatman is a national thought leader in intelligent transportation systems and future mobility. Under his leadership, the world’s largest deployment of connected cars, transit buses, and freight trucks was launched in Ann Arbor in 2012. Dr. Sweatman's research crosses the boundaries of traditional engineering disciplines. His work has been widely recognized in the fields of vehicle design and engineering, vehicle safety, road safety, driver performance, highway condition monitoring, heavy vehicle standards and regulations, and transport economics and policy. Dr. Sweatman has a strong interest in advanced safety systems which help drivers avoid crashes, and in communication technology which will not only prevent crashes but also improve traffic flow. In his native country of Australia, Dr. Sweatman received a Centenary Medal in 2002 for services to transport engineering. In January 2010 he was appointed to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s ITS Advisory Committee. Dr. Sweatman currently serves on the ITS America Board of Directors and chairs the ITS America Safety Forum. In 2006, he served on the National Academies Review of USDOT Strategic Plan for Transportation Research and Technology. Dr. Sweatman is a past president of ITS Michigan. He also serves on the SAE Truck and Bus Council, and as editor of the International Journal of Commercial Vehicles.

Dr. Henry B. Aldridge served as a guiding force in the Electronic Media and Film Studies Program at EMU from 1972 until his retirement in 2013. He developed the Electronic Media Major and Minor, the Film Studies Concentration, and the Interdisciplinary Film Studies Minor. Dr. Aldridge has achieved national recognition for his original research on the history of American film exhibition. His publications include two textbooks and The Michigan Theater: Ann Arbor’s Home for Fine Film and the Performing Arts Since 1928. Professor Aldridge was awarded an EMU Alumni Association Teaching Award. In addition, Dr. Aldridge is a fine musician and has served as head organist at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor since l972. He was largely responsible for saving the theater in l979, and is an Incorporating Officer of the Michigan Theater Foundation.

May Artists of the Month In our gallery we present Susan and Fredrick Beutler with a show about water, titled “Over and Under”. Susan has a PhD in Psychology and an MA in painting. Her love of scuba diving in the Caribbean and Red Sea led her to paint the series of water “under” the surface. She has entered many exhibits in Michigan and surrounding states, and won several awards. Fred lets his intuition be his guide, recording those images that please him. An award winning photographer, his love of photography started at age seven. After retiring as Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the U of M, he studied photography in earnest, and has absorbed himself in the subject. He has selected many of his photos of “above” the water for this combined exhibit. A standard joke between them is that they have photographically divided up the world, Sue takes pictures below the water surface, while Fred’s photographic endeavors to take place above the surface, hence we have this lovely exhibit. Library News For the start of the new reading year at the Club, the Library has been cleaned and painted and our collection is being updated. But the best news is that the catalogue of our collection is now in the Cloud. This means that you may search our collection from anywhere either to browse or to look for a specific book. You will be able to know if the book you are looking for is in our collection and whether it is currently available or on loan to another member. If it’s on loan, you can see the date that it is due to be returned. A link to the site will be included in upcoming e-blasts or you can access our site via librarything.com/catalogue/annarborcityclub. There are copies of instructions at the

Connections: Spotlight on Addie Laetz If asked if they knew someone at the City Club named Adelaide (can’t remember the last name) many members would say “there is no such person.” Those who have known her all her life—family members and friends of long standing would know the person being inquired about—Addie Laetz. ‘Addie’ is a nickname acquired in nursing school which has stuck with Addie since then. On the farm on which she was born, near Maple Grove, in a triangle between Saginaw, Flint and Owosso, Addie was always called Adelaide. She describes herself as ‘a farm girl.’ After graduating from St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw, Addie worked as a surgical nurse for several years before getting married. For the next several years Addie busied herself with family life. Sadly, Addie’s husband died leaving her with three girls and three boys, aged eight to eighteen. Addie returned to work and for the next five years worked for a cardiologist in Pontiac. She decided that it would be a good idea to acquire a bachelor’s degree in nursing as well as an R.N. and signed up to return to school. Fate had other plans and a friend told her that Shiawassee Medical Care Facility needed an experienced administrator and when she applied for the position, she was hired. While working as SMCF, she met Ernest Laetz, a retired Lutheran minister from Ann Arbor. After they were married, Addie and Ernie traveled extensively. You have heard the saying, ‘join the Navy and see the world,’ well, in this case it was ‘marry Ernie and see the world.’ The Laetz’s shared their journeys with members of the City Club and their travelogues were favorites. Addie has visited every continent except Antarctica and estimates that she has been to Spain about eighteen times. She has made at least two trips to Russia and was very struck by the difference in the country under Gorbachev and Putin. She says that during her earlier trip the country seemed very gray and gloomy but under Putin, very sparkling and bright. She and Ernie had ice cream at the very first McDonald’s in Moscow. Her trip during Putin’s regime was in the 1990’s. It would be interesting if she went once more to hear if her opinion has been modified. How did Addie come to join the City Club? Well, Ernie, of course. He knew some women who were members and enjoyed playing bridge so he encouraged Addie to join. She began her bridge lessons with Suzanne Dempster—always a good start—and Polly Fuller and is a regular at the bridge table. Addie has not only enjoyed what the City Club has to offer but has contributed as a dedicated member by acting as Archivist from 1997 to 2014. One of her most important contributions to the Archives was to transpose many deteriorating albums on to archival paper to prolong their lives. Addie took her daughter Patty to Ephesus among many other journeys but she thinks that her days of long overseas trips are now finished. She continues to enjoy needlepoint, sewing, bridge and gardening. Her garden has now been converted almost entirely to flowers but she still keeps one rhubarb plant. Addie is very enthusiastic about the City Club. “My home away from home”, “so many wonderful people” neither completely original but really wonderful to hear, over and over. We are lucky to have Addie, and she would say, she is lucky to have us. Libby Birdsall For the Membership Committee
