The first step to building a successful career for Think Mutual Bank Manager Jenny Hosfeld seemed simple enough: following her passion.

But where her passions lie wasn’t always clear. After graduating from Red Wing High School, she began studying biology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. She had enjoyed the investigative work involved in the frog and pig dissections of her high school bio class. But a year into college, struggling in chemistry classes, “I realized I didn’t like what I was doing. Biology I had a natural tendency toward, chemistry I did not.” She took a break from science classes to try to find a better fit. When she took economic classes, she found her calling.

“Economics came easy to me. I can compare it to chemistry, where I had to study so hard to understand. I could connect more easily to economics, relate it to the real world. I think it was in my first class, the professor was so engaging, I could feel the stress just go away, where in chemistry, every day was a challenge.”

Her natural strengths in math and science and interest in analytics were a perfect fit in the world of economics, but she wasn’t yet sure about a career. The summer between her junior and senior year she interned at a Red Wing bank. When the manager told her he had a job for her after graduation, “I was shocked - here was a career path. That opened my eyes to banking.’

She was hired by Norwest (who merged with Wells Fargo in ‘98) into their greater Minnesota program, and sent to Duluth as a trainee in their business banking group. After a year, she was sent to Grand Rapids. “I was so lucky! I got to rent a cabin on a lake, there were a lot of people my age coming home, so there was a demographic my age group to hang out with. I stayed two and a half years, but decided I wanted to see what else I could do.”

In 1997, she came to Norwest in Rochester. In 2006, she moved to Think Mutual Bank. After years of business banking, “When I came here, I started working with people, offering products to consumers. It was very new to me.” This past fall, she landed her dream job, leading the consumer and small business banking lines as part of Think’s senior management team.

While she attributes her success to both luck and drive, Hosfeld is also quick to credit her mentors. While banking is male-dominated, “I always had at least one female role model, a little older and more experienced. I’ve also been really fortunate, in that although all my managers have been men, they were always very supportive of me, helping me grow and develop.”

Most helpful advice? “This past fall, someone asked what I wanted to do. After I told him, he said, ‘Then why aren’t you

doing that?’ - which spurred me to go ask for the position I wanted, the job I have now.”

“That conversation led to new opportunities for me. I raised my hand. I think that’s one thing that comes easier to men – asking for what they want, having that confidence.”

Always analytical, she mapped out a strategy. “I knew the approach and expectations had to be right, saying, ‘This is my goal, this is what I’d like to do someday. I told them I was interested, then asked what I needed to do to get there. I had to be ready for feedback either way – they could have said I needed to wait longer, or told me they had concerns about my abilities. But either way, I was in a new position – I won either way.”

As for challenges she faced as a woman in a male-dominated industry, “A lot of business is about networking. Sometimes I think it’s hard, because men can network in different ways. Like they go hunt, and I don’t hunt. I had to focus on building the relationships, not the extracurricular activities. I think it’s about being consistent, reaching out to people, investing in

relationships. I think you have to be genuine, and interested in learning about someone else’s world. If you’re not, they’ll see through that, and don’t want to work with you. I think it’s also about being there for people in good times and bad.”

As for networking through the Chamber, “I was in Leadership Greater Rochester when I was fairly new to here. It was a great way to establish connections. I’m introverted by nature, so some of the external networking is uncomfortable for me, but attending Chamber events has been a great way to meet new people.”

She is also involved in developing the Chamber’s Women in Leadership series, and will be one of the five women business leaders participating in the panel at the May 22 Advancing Women to the Top event (event info on pg. 8.)

Her new goals? “I’ve always been more focused on doing the best job I can today, not ‘What will you do in five years?’ The one thing I’ve learned is, you really have to do things you want to do, or it’s not fun. What do you love? For me, number one is, I love the fact I’m in a job that ultimately helps people have a better life. Every day we try to figure out how to deliver that.”

Smart-HR Focus: Three Ways to Inspire Your Team

Lead with positivity Positive leadership is an essential ingredient in highly effective teams. When team members identify road blocks, positive leaders talk about opportunities. When team members struggle with how to succeed, you give them every possible reason why they can.

Share a compelling vision Allow candidates to submit applications online and collect information so it’s easily accessible and sortable by the hiring manager. The self-service and paperless features reduce time spent on administrative HR tasks.

Create fun and spread joy Strong leadership creates a culture of fun that celebrates individuality, inspires others to think innovatively and increases engagement. Strong leaders encourage team members to think for themselves and put their ideas to use. By doing so, you foster genuine joy that is contagious.
