Maatha Pitha Guru Deivam , this is something that all o us have been taught ever since we startedgoing to school . However in this day and age where lie works on ast-orward mode, one ndsit impossible to acknowledge all that we have learnt and act on it. Alumni Club created a wonderulopportunity to all its members on April 6th 2013 to put into practice what they believed and learnt ordecades now Celebrating their parents.

Maatha Pitha day, a unique concept to celebrate parents was organised by the club. The members couldtreat their parents to a sumptuous buet dinner, rib tickling comedy and some very heartwarmingmusic. The season o the bat and ball had started and cricket being religion in India, the committeemembers were a bit worried about the turn out at the event, much to everyones surprise the grandevent that was held at the club lawns on a wonderul star lit evening and was attended by a large

    audience aging 6yrs - 80yrs.

The concept was to treat the parents o the members with great ood, soothing music and a lot olaughter. Bosskey and his group lightened the evening with some wonderul comedy. He perormedstandup comedy and the amous vetti pechu league along with his group comprising o Neelu, Naaniand Prasad. Some very soothing music was rendered my 3 upcoming singers rom super singer (VijayTV) Deepa , Soundarya and Krishna. Prizes were also given away to the oldest parent (male, emale)

who came and enjoyed the show along with their children. When old age homes are growing innumber, it was heart warming to see the members bring along aged parents or an evening o unand laughter. The president should be given credit or this wonderul idea and the entertainmentcommittee or putting it together.

The evening did come to an end... but the thought o celebrating parents had just begun...

    RELATIonSHIP

Poison PalsFriends make the world go round. But not all riends

turn out to be the way you expect. What are the telltalesigns that a buddy is toxic? Smita Shenoyanalyses.

There is nothing sweeter than true riendshipbut then there is nothing sourer than arelationship with the wrong ones. Is your cravingor companionship making you turn a blind eyeto the aults o your so called mates? Here are six

types you are better o without.

Aunt Agony:She is the ree advice dispenser. From fxing abroken gadget to mending a broken heart, she

has instant solutions or everything under theblessed Sun. Her readiness to resolve mattersthough welcome at times may be largely jarringon the nerves because a riend in this category isalways on the lookout or problems when there

    are none.

    Understanding Them:

Probably, a repressed childhood, a shelteredupbringing and a set o domineering parents

have stied her natural instincts. Now as an adultshe is the victim o an uncontrollable need tofx others lives. She is overly critical o all and

sundry just like her relations had been o her.She fnds it impossible to accept that otherscan accept responsibility or their own lives andactions.

    EtErnAl BorrowEr:

She reverses the adage giving is better thanreceiving on its head. And money is not the only

think she borrows. Your avourite thriller, yourcomic book collection, a bowl o sugar, yourLBD, your range o imported cosmetics: nothing

is sae rom this sponge. Once things vanish intothe black hole o her apartment they are not

likely to see the light o the day again.

Understanding Them:Strange as it may seem to us, some people areaddicted to borrowing and get quite a kick rom

their compulsion or debt. In cases such as these,it is the lender who has to be assertive and mouthan emphatic no. The conict between being kindand being exploited is a moral dilemma most o

Sometimes, insecurities about their personal andproessional lives compel some women to bickerand nag.Instead o identiying the source o theirdiscontent and seeking to better the situation,

they fnd solace in sel pity and whining.

as you confde in her is herhobby. She takes pleasure intweeting, posting and mailingyour intimate details to theworld. She not only spills your

secrets, she exaggerates andmakes stu up to spice up theproceedings.

Understanding Them:It is actually quite difcultto understand what perversepleasure some people getrom sharing their riendsconfdences with the

world. It could stem rom apsychological urge to createa sensation even i it is at theexpense o others. It is best tobe wary o such people and not

a snobbish and slightly pompous one.

Understanding Them:This set o ladies is more irritable than harmul. And the best part is that most o these one-uppers are not even aware that they are doing

something very annoying. There is not much wecan do about their behavioural pattern exceptmaybe give them a dose o their own medicineby bragging about some weird and outlandishthings we may have done (in our dreams).

Ultimately, it may lead them to realise that theyhave to put a ull stop somewhere or risk losingtheir sanity.

    VAinglorious VAmp:

Inicted with the classic rog in the wellsyndrome, this sel absorbed lady would putNarcissus to shame. She is identifed by herafnity or the words, I, me, mysel. Herconversations are only about my amily, my

clothes, my job. One hour in her company and

you would even know which brand o toothpasteher kids use to shine their pearlies.

Understanding them:Normally, we eel only women talk aboutthemselves but it is a guy thing too. The subjectso mens conversation may be dierent, rangingrom gadgets and gizmos to the latest set owheels they purchased, but once they start a

monologue it is difcult to contain them. Itmay just be a ploy to grab eyeballs and keep thespotlight fxed on them but these ladies andgentlemen have to be made to realise that theEarth does not revolve around them and that i

they keep up this trait they may soon be talkingabout themselves to themselves.

Watermelons are a deliciously soothing wayto ace the summer heat. Heavenly in slushes, milk shakes and ruit salads, watermelons are

just as un to eat in big chunks cut straightout o the ruit. Luscious, thirst quenching

watermelons also pack a punch in healthbenets. Watermelon is high in the richness onutrients, and lower in calories than most otherruits. A dieters delight, a ull cup o watermelon

has only 48 calories while delivering morenutrients per calorie than many other ruits andvegetables.

Watermelons are not just tasty; they areextremely healthy as well. They are rich withpotassium, a nutrient that is known to helpcontrol blood pressure, regulate heart beat, andpossibly even prevent strokes. Potassium may alsoreduce the occurrence o kidney stones and agerelated bone loss. Watermelons are a treasure

trove o the most vital antioxidants ound innature. The disease ghting anti-oxidants,Vitamin C and beta-carotene, are ound inabundance in watermelons. Researchers believethat antioxidants such as Vitamin C and betacarotene can help prevent heart disease, cancersand other chronic ailments. Pink watermelonis also rich in lycopene, the potent carotenoidantioxidant. These powerul antioxidantsneutralize ree radicals in the body, which cancause great damage, creating conditions leading

to heart attacks or strokes, enhance the severityo asthma attacks, and damage the lining o thecolon, creating pre cancerous conditions. The

vitamin C and beta carotene in watermelon canneutralize the bad eects o ree radicals.

Recent research indicates that lycopene, one othe carotenoids abundant in watermelon, canhelp reduce the risk o cancers o the prostate, breast, endometrial tissues, as well as lung andcolon cancers. Antioxidants are also believed

to ease the painul symptoms o osteoarthritisand rheumatoid arthritis and help preserve thehealth o your eyes. Data reported in a studypublished in the Archives o Ophthalmologyindicates that eating 3 or more servings oruit per day may lower your risk o age-related

macular degeneration, a major cause o loss ovision in older people. Watermelon is a richsource o citrulline, which can help relax theblood vessels, and helps in lowering high bloodpressure.

Watermelon is a rich source o the B groupvitamins which keep up our energy levels whilekeeping the calories down.

TIPS FOR SELECTION AND STORING:The best and tastiest watermelons have deepreddish pink pulp. It is saer to buy whole, uncut

watermelons which are heavy or their size. Therind should be relatively smooth, and neithertoo shiny nor dull. One side o the watermelonshould have a patch distinctly paler rom the rest

o the rind, which is yellow or cream coloured. This is the spot that rests on the ground whilethe melon is ripening on the vine. I the ruitdoes not have this mark, it may have beenharvested prematurely, and articially ripened, and thereore insipid in taste and lower innutrients. Research undertaken at the Universityo Innsbruck in Austria indicates that antioxidantlevels increase in ruits as they ripen. Thus, overripe ruits would have a higherconcentration o antioxidants.

You can maximize the beta carotene andlycopene in watermelon by storing the ruit atroom temperature. However, once the ruit iscut, it is best to store it in the rerigerator. The

watermelon should be cut into as large piecesas possible, and then wrapped in cling lm orstored in airtight containers to preserve the juicyreshness.

Cut them, slice them, add them in ruit saladsand sorbet or enjoy watermelon slices just as theyare. Watermelons are a juicy way to pamper yourtaste buds and add zing to

    your lie.
