Farewell from our Chair Dear Chamber Members:
Thank you for allowing me to serve as your chair this past year. It is
hard to believe how quickly time flies as I get ready to turn the gavel
over to Aaron Barrick. While it has been a year filled with wonder-
ful events, new programs and stellar experiences, some of my most memorable have been the one-on-one moments I have had getting to
know many of you better.
This Chamber is blessed to have an incredible staff and executive
leadership as well as a board committed to the mission and vision of the Chamber and the Castle Rock community. But, even more
importantly, you – our members – are engaged, active, inspiring and
optimistic about the future. I have not been to a training, Business
of the Month award, Women of Influence Luncheon or Business Af-
ter Hours event in which I didn’t come away better informed, more connected and more uplifted than when I arrived. Thank you for this incredible opportunity.
Our partnership with Webster University and the launch of the Young Entrepreneurs
Academy show the forward thinking attitude of this community and the Chamber. These
are two exceptional programs that provide value to residents and students as well as our businesses. Congratulations to the Castle Rock Chamber for taking the lead to bring inno-
vative new ideas and programs to the forefront.
And, the debut of the Healthy Living Expo is another way to showcase that business
health and personal health go hand in hand. You can expect this event to grow by leaps and bounds over the coming years, drawing attendees from across the county and beyond
to savor what Castle Rock has to offer.
And finally, I hope to see you at the annual banquet this year when we honor several of
the best and brightest in the Castle Rock community! Please come out to honor the col-leagues and friends who have made a difference through their involvement and commit-
ment to excellence.
It has been my honor and privilege to lead, if only for a moment in time, this terrific
organization that truly is committed to your success.

Information Technology- BUSINESS TRAININGS
These programs are sponsored by:
On April 3, the Castle Rock Chamber celebrated the accomplishments of four local business owners who graduated from the Chamber’s Business Boot Camp. That evening, the graduates presented detailed plans on how they will grow their companies based on the information and skills they picked up during the six months of training. The Boot Camp featured monthly in-depth sessions covering leadership, finance, marketing, information technology, social media and human
resources. Mike Tafoya of Estrada Strategies taught the sessions and once again donated his time, skills and experience to this program. Our congratulations to graduates Dan Reeter (Nytech Heating and Cool-ing), Heather Struna (Wedding Treasures Bridal and Tuxedos), Kimberly Maez (Ameriprise Financial) and Hattie Reed (HReed & Company). Two distinguished members of the Castle Rock community joined us on the 3rd, forming an advisory panel to provide thoughtful and specific feedback to the graduates. Thank you to Wes King (President, FirstBank Douglas County) and Jamie LaRue (Director, Douglas County Libraries) for their service that evening. If you’d like to take your business well beyond the startup phase, pl ease

Member Orientation—Revamped format was
a SUCCESS! For April’s member orientation, the Chamber experi-
mented with a new format. Members were able to meet the staff directly and ask questions that pertained to their
specific needs. By participating in small breakout
groups instead of the usual large group presentation,
members engaged with the staff and other members so
they may fully understand their benefits. Our next ori-entation will be on July 26th, at the Castle Rock Cham-

The Ambassadors have instituted a new quarterly award called the Distinguished Ambassador Award. Qualifications for
this award are: Nomination from fellow Ambassadors for going above and beyond the call of duty; no association to points
earned, only based on service they provide that is recognized and noted by their peers.
The Chamber is most proud to announce that our Distinguished
Ambassador is also our Ambassador of the Month! At our last meeting Donna Thurlow was pre-
sented with both the Ambassador of the Month award and the Distinguished
Ambassador Award. (Both awards are sponsored by DCF Guns)
Donna has been a member of the
Chamber for more than two years. As a Chamber Ambassador she has the
opportunity to participate in many of the Chambers programs, encouraging
other business owners to take advantage of the many services provided by the
Chamber to enhance their business. Donna feels it is a great pleasure to
meet and get to know current business owners as well as new business owners that also see the value in Chamber member-
ship.
While Donna enjoys participating in all the events, she particu-larly enjoys attending the Open House/Ribbon Cuttings for
new businesses, letting them know the Chamber is here to as-sist in growing their business. It’s all about helping others in
Donna’s mind.
Donna is the President/CEO of Best Seasons Travel. As a Travel Specialist, being an Ambassador gives her the opportu-
nity to build relationships with others, starting with the won-derful group of Chamber Ambassadors, and to learn more
about this community. “ It’s like with anything, Donna says, “what you put into it is what you will get out of it.” She tries to
take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities offered.
If you have not met Donna, please make sure you do! You will see her at all the Chamber events!
Congratulations on your hard work as an Ambassador of the
Month and Distinguished Ambassador as recognition for your efforts “ above and beyond the call”. Your time and dedication
are greatly appreciated.

April’s Topics: Law Enforcement
Steering Committee Planner: Captain Robert McMahan (Leadership Douglas County Class of 2011)
On Wednesday, April 4th, the Leadership Douglas County class met at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office for a ses-
sion on public safety. The day began with a welcome by several leaders in the law enforcement field, including the
Command staff of all four agencies in Douglas County. The
focus of their presentation was on ethics and integrity. They also spoke about the evolution of community policing, the
perception of law enforcement officers, and how leadership.
Professionalism and accountability has increased over the years.
In the morning segment, the class toured the Douglas
County Sheriff’s Office and Coroner’s Office, learning
about their various programs and divisions.
The day would not be complete without demonstrations given
by the K-9 Team, SORT Team, SWAT Team and the various
hands-on activities. One activity which proved very insightful to see just how hard it can be to anticipate actions of potential
criminals was a simulated full-scale interactive video. Reac-
tions to the scenarios were a matter of life and death. This simulation exercise is one of many hands on exercises that
officers utilize for training.
“This was a great view into the Sheriff’s Department; the de-
tails and complexity of this huge operation were impressive.
The Douglas County Sheriff runs a very diverse operation which appears to be a model for the state. It was exciting to
watch the live demonstrations out at the range, especially when given a chance to see and experience how our officers
have to react in high pressure situations.” Mike McNairy,
H&M Transmission and Automotive.
The next topic for Leadership Douglas County’s class day is
“Fire and Emergency Services” on May 2nd. Leadership Douglas County is currently accepting applications for the
2012-13 class. Leadership Douglas County is designed to
broaden participant knowledge of the community while en-hancing leadership skills, which in turn increases the strength
and effectiveness of our new community leaders. The appli-
cation deadline is June 15th, 2012. For more information on the Leadership Douglas County program, please call Melissa
Moroni at (303) 688-4597 or email [email protected]
