Nationally, about 180,000 jobs are being added on a monthly basis.

Through the first eight months of 2013, jobs added in Colorado have been steady, although the rate of growth began to decline in Q2. On

average, 58,500 jobs have been added compared to the same period last year. It is unlikely however the current level of job growth can

be sustained without greater creation of primary jobs.

Our Colorado unemployment rate and number of unemployed work-ers have trended downward since late 2010. In August 2013, the

total number of unemployed workers declined slightly. The total

number of unemployed is about twice as many as June 2007, the low point.

Between June 2007 and the peak in October 2010, the number of unemployed workers increased by 153,192. In the 35 months since

the peak, the number of unemployed workers has declined by only

52,860.

There was a decline in unemployment from 7.3% in January to 7.1% for the past six

months, however these changes are not significant. Despite solid gains in wage and sal-

ary employment, the number of unemployed workers declined by 6,628 between Janu-ary and August. The decline from March to August has only been 1,561.

Sold Growth Sectors The average employment for the solid growth sectors through the last eight months is

25,100 greater than the same period in 2012. These sectors account for 32.3% of total

employment the top three sectors are in health care, business-to-business and profes-sional/scientific. They have accounted for 42.9% of job growth in 2013. These sectors

were forecasted to add 19,000 to 25,000 jobs in 2013.

Colorado business and government leaders will have a new and exciting opportunity this fall. On October 17th and 18th the Economic Development Council of Colorado will

present a national level conference in downtown Denver that features Bill McDermott, CEO of SAP (one of the world's leading software companies), Bob Rice of Bloomberg

News, Joel Kotkin (the authority on global, economic and political trends), Scott Black-

mun (CEO of the US Olympic Committee), Governor Hickenlooper, and others.

Every Year the Chamber recognizes and appreciates our

members in a tradition called Member Appreciation Day

where members receive a thank you gift designating them

as a cherished Member. In addition, the new 2014 Mem-

ber Directory will be delivered to those Chamber Mem-

bers. On Thursday, October 17th from 1pm to 4pm,

Board of Director, Staff, and Ambassador Members will be

visiting our Chairman’s Circle Sponsors to thank them for

their generosity and support. On Friday, October 18th

from 9am to 1pm, more than 20 Ambassadors, Board

Members, and Chamber staff will cover the Castle Rock

Community and distribute our new 2014 Chamber Direc-

tories and thank you gifts to our commercial location busi-

ness Members. Our theme this year is:

“Here’s To YOU!!!”

Please look for our Board of Directors, Ambassadors and

Chamber staff to come in and give a special thank you in

person!

We are excited to have the opportunity each year to let

our members know how important you are to us. We

could not carry out this special day without our Member

Appreciation Day sponsor, Wells Fargo Bank!

If you would like to volunteer to help with this prestigious

event, please email Susan at [email protected] or call

her at 303-688-4597 and join us for lunch afterwards on

The Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce recently announced its September re-cipient for Business of the Month — Castle Rock Adventist Health Campus. As

part of the Centura Health Network who have been active Castle Rock Cham-ber member for more than 10 years, their newest location Castle Rock Advent-

ist Health Campus opened Aug.1st and offers 24-hour care locally.

Our new neighbor makes available a local choice for those seeking hospital care, further fulfilling the Town’s Vision 2020 goal of facilitating the develop-

ment of a 24-hour medical facility in Castle Rock. (The 24-hour emergency

room attached to the hospital opened about in 2012).

“After years of planning and development, our team is excited the day has fi-nally come for us to open Castle Rock’s first hospital and start providing com-passionate care and comprehensive services to our community,” CEO Todd

Folkenberg said.

The 50-bed Castle Rock Adventist Hospital, 2350 Meadows Blvd., connects Cas-tle Rock to Colorado’s largest health care system, Centura Health. Expert pro-viders at the state-of-the-art facility specialize in areas including orthopedics; emergency. Pediatric and cardiac services; intensive care; radiology/imaging;

rehabilitation; and sleep disorders.

The hospital also gives expecting parents a local option for bringing the newest Castle Rock residents into the world. The West-facing labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum rooms are complete with small chandeliers and fold-down

couches, where dad can catch some sleep.

“We know Centura Health and Castle Rock Adventist Hospital are a wonderful

addition to our community, and we look forward to a long-term and positive

partnership,” Mayor Paul Donahue said.

Residents of Castle Rock and beyond no doubt are excited about this new neighbor. Enthusiasm may cause the new hospital to grow quickly – the build-ing’s fourth floor is a blank slate, offering room for expansion in any needed

area at just a few months notice.

Congratulations from the Castle Rock Chamber

for being recognized as an outstanding

business.

Michael Likens, Chairman of the Board, proudly presents the Business of the Month award to Todd

Folkenberg and members of the hospital staff as Chamber staff and ambassadors show their support.

Women of Influence Luncheon

Major Brenda Leffler

Lieutenant Colonel at Colorado State Patrol

The Women of Influence Luncheon Series provides opportuni-

ties and a venue for women leaders to network, share their

best insights and business practices, and foster connections

with others. Each quarterly luncheon will address a particular

key issue and solutions to women's advancement.

Major Brenda Leffler was promoted to lieutenant colonel — a rank no other woman has reached during the 76 year history of the depart-ment a little over a year and half ago. Before joining the State Patrol, Leffler was a noncommissioned officer in the U.S. Army and the Na-tional Guard between 1987 and 1997.

She joined the department in 1993, starting her career as a trooper in Golden. In 2002 Leffler was promoted to sergeant in Gilpin County. Just three years later she became a captain and then served as com-mander and major for the homeland security section of the patrol.

Most recently, Leffler was a liaison to the executive command staff and the Office of the Chief. "Lt. Colonel Leffler becomes an integral part of accomplishing our Strategic Plan, Intelligence-Led Policing plans and other pressing challenges facing the patrol today," said Colonel James Wolfinbarger, Chief of the CSP.

Leffler replaced Lt. Colonel Anthony Padilla — the first Latino in that position — who retired in April.

With Lieutenant Colonel Brenda L. Leffler ‘s experiences, she is uniquely qualified to inspire and motivate at this quarter’ Women of Influence Series.

This Luncheon is Sponsored by:

The Castle Rock Chamber of Com-merce Young Entrepreneurs Academy

(YEA!), offering students in grades 9-12 the opportunity to establish a business enterprise or social move-ment through a 30-week, project-based, hands-on entrepreneurial edu-cation, has recently partnered with

eDCSD: The Colorado Cyber School. "Because this program is so closely aligned to the eDCSD: CO Cyber Crea-tive Competency program, any eligi-ble student participating in YEA! will

also have an opportunity to earn course credit through the Creative Competency program," said Sohne VanSelus, Principal of the Douglas

County School District's online school.

In 2012, the Castle Rock Chamber of

Commerce was awarded a grant by the US Chamber of Commerce to bring the first YEA! program to the State of Colorado. Sponsored by the Castle Rock Chamber, Douglas County

School District, Castle View High School, the Kaufmann Foundation and a number of local businesses, YEA! teaches students how to write a business or social action plan, make a

pitch to investors/supporters, obtain funding and launch their own real company/movement. They start as a student and finish as a CEO of their

own company!

The classes will meet in the Media

Center at Castle View High School, on Monday nights, from late October through May. Any interested, quali-fied student residing in the District is

eligible to apply.

For students seeking academic credit, additional incentives, such as a

loaned iPAD containing both produc-tivity and creativity tools to record

their experience will be included.

Class size is limited and the fee for the entire course, which includes all materials, pizza parties, field trips,

pitching before an Investors Panel, a Trade Show and graduation, is $350. Partial scholarships are available for eligible students. The deadline for applications is October 4. Classes be-

gin after fall break on October 21,

with an orientation on October 7.

Students and parents who would like more information or have questions about the application process can call 720.440.3726 or visit www.castlerock.org/yea.htm.

Business leaders can learn how to get involved with YEA! as a men-tor, guest lecturer, or how to join the CEO Investor Panel.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Accelerate growth. Promote excellence.

The Castle Rock Economic Gardening “eXcelerate Business Development Program” (EBDP) is designed to lead and inspire businesses to grow and prosper to their highest potential. Every business whether in the early

stages of development or deeply rooted established businesses will benefit from the concepts and sys-tems taught in the program. Our goal is to help participating busi-

nesses accelerate growth and pro-mote excellence through proven business development and business

planning strategies and tactics.

Key elements of growth can be measured in many ways:

• Increased revenues and profits

• added staff and workforce

• acquisition of investment capital and

• community impact

Ultimately, these growth patterns depend on helping individual busi-ness leaders grow in the knowledge and ability to impact their own com-

pany.

eXcelerate Business Development Program will provide business own-ers with:

• Business training

• Peer group accountability and

• Leader mentors

During the five month program, par-ticipants will attend a series of seven high impact training sessions with Business Coach and Trainer Mike

Tafoya, President of Estrada Strate-gies-DTC, meet with their leader mentors, and develop a one year strategic plan. The goal for all par-ticipants is to establish and define

their future growth strategies, and create an implementation plan for

the immediate future.
