In case you’ve wondered what comprises aDriver’sEducation(DE)event, you’vecometo the right place. First of all, DEs are notracingschools. Thesessionsarenot timed;therearenotrophies;racingisnotpermitted.A DE provides a venue where, under thesupervision of a driving instructor, driverscanlearnhighspeedcorneringandbrakingtechniques that can only be learned on aclosedtrack.

The first question is “why should I exposemy Porsche to the rigors of a race track?”The answer: because a DE gives you theopportunitytolearnnewdrivingtechniquesandfindthelimitsofbothyouandyourcarin a safe and controlled environment. Theskills learned will make you a better driverandmayhelpavoidapotentialaccident.

Planning for a DE starts many weeks inadvance beginning with registration. Theseeventstypicallysellout, soearlyregistrationis a must. PCA DE events are all listed onwww.register.pca.org. Next, an inspectionmustbeperformedtoassureyourvehicleismechanicallysound.ThatinspectionmustbeperformedbyaPorschedealer,arecognizedrepairfacility,orindependentmechanic.This

inspection is a requirement, not an option.Porsche of Melbourne provides this serviceatnocharge.

A helmet is required during your time onthe track. A helmet can be bought on-line,but before doing so, I suggest that you trysomeone else’s helmet for size. Currently,PCApermitstheuseofallSA(automotive),KA(karting)andMA(motorcycle)helmetswithaSNELstickerof2005ornewer.

Regarding the type of clothing to be wornduring the event, clubs have differentregulations as to shirts and pants, so checktheir web site. Most permit short sleevedshirtsandshortsduringthesummermonths.Closed-toed shoes are required. Specialdrivingshoesarenotnecessaryforbeginners;athletic shoes or boat shoes are acceptable. The shoes should be comfortable, but tightenoughthatquickmovementsofthelegsandfeetdon’tcausetheshoetoshift.

When you arrive at the track, you’ll firstsign a track waiver and be directed to thepit and paddock areas. Most DEs requireyou to check-in for the event, sign anotherwaiver, and receive a wrist band indicating

yourrungroup.Toprepareyourcarfortechinspection,removeallofthelooseitemsinyourcar(includingfloormats),glovebox,andtrunk.Removeyourtirevalvestemcaps.Isuggestthatyoubringa plastic sheet to place on the groundforthoseitemsrequiredtoberemoved.

Then you may drive your car to aninspection area where a team willreview your signed inspection sheet, checkyourhelmet’s rating, assure thatalllooseitemshavebeenremovedfromyour vehicle, check your tire pressure, and then place a sticker on yourwindshield acknowledging that theinspectioniscomplete.

In the driver’s meeting, the Chief DrivingInstructor (CDI) will provide a generaloverviewoftheday’sactivitiesandprotocols.Passingareasofthetrackwillbeaddressed,alongwithpoint-byproceduresandareviewof the flags used at the track. The CDI willemphasize the importance of safety on thetrack, and the unbending issue of no ruleviolations. Finally, you will be paired withyourinstructor.

Yourinstructormaydriveduringaportionofthefirstwarm-upsessionandshowyou“theline”aroundthetrack,includingtheturn-in,apexandtrack-outpoints,thelocationofflagstations,andthepitentrance.Newstudentswill receive classroom training before thefirst“at-speed”session.

Theinstructorwillonlytakeyoutothelimitsof speed and cornering that you, and theinstructor, feel comfortable. Following eachsession, youandyourinstructorwillreviewyourprogressandfocusontheelementsthatyouneedtoconcentrateonduringthenextsession.

After several sessions over a couple ofdays, your instructor may recommendthat you receive a check-out ride with theCDI to be signed off for solo status. Thisrecommendation isbasedonyourprogressand is at the discretion of the instructor.
