Team building event with O&O, South African Homeless Street Soccer, and Figure of 8

On Saturday, May 29, S4H/H4H held a team building street soccer event for our MVPs and the One & Only Hotel's corporate soccer team at Intchinga Primary School. After kick starting the event with a few icebreakers and music from DJ La, our MVPs broke off to meet with each of their communities to learn what qualities make a good coach. Thereafter, each group of MVPs discussed what their community and program goals were and how they planned to achieve them. After compiling their ideas, each community performed them in a song, poem, or dance while judges rated the groups. O&O awarded the winners, Khayelitsha Phase 3, with a To-Be-Announced prize (likely transportation and dinner somewhere). Meanwhile, Dwaine and Danelle from Figure of 8 ran a team-building workshop with the O&O's soccer squad. Following the workshop, Barney from Coaching 4 Hope ran a training session with the squad. Both of the sessions received great feedback from the O&O team. At the end of the day, Barney was asked if he would coach the O&O squad. For lunch, Mr. Mzoli kindly braaied 200 boerewors provided by the One & Only. After filling our minds and stomachs, South African Homeless Street Soccer combined O&O's soccer team with our MVPs and All Stars into twelve teams for a mini street soccer World Cup. After two and a half fun-filled hours of playing soccer and listening to all that the DJ had to offer, Cameroon defeated Netherlands 3-1 in the finals of the tournament. At the end of the day, it was a successful event with 44 S4H participants and 35 H4H participants. Thanks to all of our partners for making this a memorable day!

Canadian Friends Travel to Cape Town

*Info courtesy of our friends at Trinity Western University, Men’s Basketball Team*

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University men’s basketball team returned home Thursday after a 12-day missions trip to South Africa, which included helping conduct basketball clinics through Hoops 4 Hope, playing an exhibition game against a local team and touring the country.

With global non-profit organization, Hoops 4 Hope, the team was involved with helping to run basketball camps for children in South African townships and cities. Between 100 and 150 kids showed up for the camps and, while the kids were overjoyed with the chance to participate, when the final hoop was made, it was the Spartans players who came away feeling blessed. “To see all of the kids and how happy they were to be able to come together and play basketball and learn from some of the Hoops 4 Hope coaches was incredible,” said Spartans second year forward Tyrell Mara via his blog. “My personal highlight had to be the energy and love, especially the dancing and singing. Man do these kids have rhythm. At the end of the camp they would all get together and sing and dance and run around and jump and hug everyone. Wow that was powerful.”

With 10,000 children in our programs, but zero who have access to the Internet and computers, H4H plans to change this score! H4H has over 10,000 kids every year participating in our exciting programs across southern Africa, and approximately 0 have access to the Internet. We intend to change that, so we can truly get our global family together to share and communicate, while bringing web-ucation and open source learning to our youngsters and coaches who are so hungry for information.

This is an exciting and unique way for sponsors to come on board and have their name displayed on the outer walls. Placed next to the basketball court or soccer pitch in the safe confines of a partner school or community center, the Container Clubhouse can truly make a difference to help change the score and level the playing field for disadvantaged communities in Africa.

Don’t miss the 1st appearance of the H4H Clubhouse in the USA. . .this coming summer!

Precious Resources: Basketballs!

Many crates of donated Spalding balls arrived after the NBA’s Basketball without Borders camps in September 2009. Last month this delivery traveled from our South African storage unit via the luggage of Mark Crandall by plane, from Cape Town to Johannesburg. These precious resources were then handed off to Ngoni Mukukula, H4H Zimbabwe Director, and were driven by bus, across the border and up to their final destination . . .the courts of Harare!
