New „Individual“ Member of the IMZ
We would like to extend a warm welcome to our latest and youngest new
member:
Oskar Vladimir, born on 30 March 2010, perfect size and perfect weight!
The parents, especially his mother Tatiana Petkova, are happy and absolutely
overwhelmed!
Welcome to the IMZ family little Oskar!
Once upon a time… And Haydn for a start: In 1947 the
company’s founder Otto G. Preiser (*1920 in Vienna)
met the American musicologist H.C. Robbins Landon, with whom, in 1949 he set out to establish the Haydn
Society aiming at making available a complete edition of Haydn’s works on record… After the closing of the
society’s Viennese office, Otto Preiser purchased the
exclusive rights of distribution for Austria, finding himself at once in the midst of a flourishing business of
record retailing. Speciality: Historical recordings. Consequently, in 1952 he launched his own label.
PREISER RECORDS saw the light of day… including
the most sophisticated selection of "Kabarett aus Wien", as well as the acclaimed series “Lebendige
Vergangenheit” (launched 1966). And the success story of the “lilac label” continues…
Today, the PREISER-catalogue is one of the most
distinguished and reliable sources for a detailed
documentary of the great voices and musicians of the
past century, for these days and the future…
Cherishing and cultivating its expert niche in the market with unrivalled care, accuracy, and commitment
to optimal quality, PREISER RECORDS can proudly stand their ground next to the huge and multinational
“giants” in the shifting business world. Still, collectors
and fetishists of the incomparable sound of the historical from all over the world eagerly wait for and
gratefully welcome with enthusiasm the current new PREISER-releases…

EUROARTS MUSIC INTERNATIONA
EuroArts Music International proudly presents the
20th edition of the annual Europa Konzert of the
Berliner Philharmoniker, the Europa Konzert
2010 from Oxford: Each year the Berliner
Philharmoniker select a venue of cultural importance
in a different European city for a concert to mark
their founding in 1882 – this year’s concert takes
place in the Sheldonian Theatre of Oxford University.
The orchestra, under the baton of Daniel Barenboim,
welcomes cellist Alisa Weilerstein, who has attracted
widespread attention for a playing that combines
natural virtuosic command and technical precision
with impassioned musicianship. (Programme number:
5806)
EuroArts Music International would also like to invite
you to two fascinating operas, both recorded at the
Paris Opéra Bastille by Idéale Audience:
Massenet: Werther
Under the baton of Michel Plasson, a Massenet
specialist, singers Jonas Kaufmann and Sophie Koch
perform one of opera history's most touching love
stories. Jonas Kaufmann, who received ecstatic
reviews from the French press, not only looks the
part of the romantic, lovelorn hero, he sings it with a
wealth of expressive nuances. Kaufmann in his role
debut is very convincing as Werther, equally so is the
splendid Sophie Koch as Charlotte and Ludovic Tézier
as a warm, manly Albert, Werther’s successful rival.

Ioan Holender at the Vienna State Opera
- A musical review 1991 – 2010

premieres, 63 ballet evenings, 11 children’s operas
during Ioan Holender’s term as director, the longest
such term in the 140-year history of the opera
house. The concert Musical Review 1991 – 2010, a
charity concert, will revive the artistic highlights of
almost two decades. Excerpts from some 40
premieres at the Vienna State Opera since 1991 will
be performed, interpreted by artists who left their
mark on Holender’s term of office. Highlights of
opera, operetta and ballet will recall some of the
great performances of the last 19 years. With Anna
Netrebko, Plácido Domingo, Joseph Calleja, José
Cura, Diana Damrau, Simon Keenlyside, Thomas
Hampson, Krassimira Stoyanova and many others.
An ORF-Production distributed by Clasart.
Carmen from the Met
Among the large catalogue of the Metropolitan
Opera there is one outstanding production recently
recorded: Carmen with the breathtaking Elina
Garanča in the title role and Roberto Alagna as her
Don José. As Micaëla acts soprano star Barbara
Frittoli. Director Richard Eyre has promised a “sexy
and shocking” version and his work does not
disappoint. Variety wrote: “He has created a Carmen
that is gripping from start to finish.” Never the final
scene, in which the crazed Don José stabs the
fatalistically defiant Carmen, was executed with such
stunning realism, a dangerous mingling of sex,
rebellion and violence:
the very essence of Carmen. The phenomenal
Metropolitan Opera orchestra is conducted lively
and dynamically by young Canadian star conductor
Yannick Nézet-Séguin. The press unanimously
praised this CARMEN as one of the very best
productions shown at the Met in the past years.

OBITUARY: DON JOSÉ MONTES BAQUER
A Tribute by Christopher Nupen
José Montes-Baquer died in the Planas Clinic, Palma
de Mallorca, on 18 April 2010. He had been ill for
three months. He was 74.
José was a man of kindness, of integrity, of
refinement and high intelligence: all of which were
employed to the full in his quest for a life with real
meaning – […] In his professional life he was one of
the very, very few television directors who was truly
distinguished both as an artist and as administrator.
As administrator, he had the good fortune to grow
up in the best school – the television music
department of Westdeutscher Rundfunk, under the
inspired leadership of Manfred Gräter […]. When
Gräter died […] José inherited that department
and, astonishingly, expanded it just when the lean
years for music programming, worldwide, were
beginning to engulf the television world and the age
of the ghetto channel was ushered in without
ceremony. […] As an artist […] he produced a body
of work that is distinguished from start to finish,
[…] instantly recognisable by its inventiveness, both
visual and thematic; its wit; it’s dry look at the usual,
making it, instantly, unusual in the process, and its
originality. […] Nobody else has ever made anything
remotely like José’s film Impressions de la Haute
Mongolie, which he made with Salvador Dalí. […]
(and which) made José famous in most parts of the
advanced television world.
On a personal note, we drew huge pleasure from
each other’s films and, as a direct consequence of
shared ideals and convictions, we called each other
hermano, for 40 years. I am proud of that and
grateful for it, just as I am grateful […] for the
professional support which he gave us.
It was no surprise that in his last days Don José
Montes Baquer remained courageous, philosophical
and undespairing – right to the end.
[…]
All who knew him will miss him and all will mourn
their loss –
