And yet another edition of IMZ at MIDEM was a big success!
For the first time the IMZ Welcome and Opening Cocktail, held Saturday, 28
January 2012 at 2.30pm at the IMZ stand, was organized in co-operation with
ReedMIDEM and was open also to Non-IMZ-members.
Chris Hunt, President of the IMZ, Cornelia Much from ReedMIDEM and Bernd
Hellthaler from EuroArts International were proud to welcome maestro Valerie
Gergiev as special guest of the cocktail and learn more about his future projects.
For the 28th time the IMZ Avant Première Screenings took part at MIDEM. Once
again it was possible for the IMZ to screen, as in the year before, in the new
screening location of Auditorium A - a true cinema hall with a massive screen,
sophisticated technical equipment and more than 300 seats.
Over a period of four days no fewer than 52 companies presented their show

Despite major changes in the arrangement of the exhibition space at MIDEM
2012 the IMZ stand remained at its usual location, with its breathtaking sea
view of the bay of Cannes and of „La Croisette“ and was a centre of
attraction and a busy venue for many productive meetings.
Thanks to effusive positive feedback the IMZ has received for its organisation
of the stand, the board meeting, the 57th General Assembly and the
screenings, we look forward to another successful Avant Premiére event in
2012....
Many thanks to all of you who have contributed to a lovely and lively

CLASART CLASSIC
From The Met: Highlights Available For TV
Two outstanding productions from the current Met
season are now available for TV:
In the Met’s new staging of Gounod’s Faust
superstar Jonas Kaufmann sings the title role,
opposite Marina Poplavskaya as Marguerite, and
René Pape as the devil himself. Tony Award-winning
director Des McAnuff sets the quintessential tale of a
man’s bargain with the devil in the first half of the 20th
century. An “exceptional work by a fine cast of singing
actors […]. Their performances guaranteed that
Gounod’s opera came across as serious and even
gripping theatre.” (Associated Press). The conductor is
the much-applauded Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
The new year of the Met in HD season started off with a
top-class production: The Enchanted Island. “A
terrific cast… a brilliant production team... fanciful, clever,
and touching.” (The New York Times). This world
premiere opera combines great music of the Baroque era
e.g. from Handel, Vivaldi and Rameau with an all-new,
English-language story, written by the English theatre
artist Jeremy Sams. The light-hearted libretto is based on
two of Shakespeare’s best-known plays: The four young
lovers from A Midsummer Night’s Dream find themselves
shipwrecked on Prospero’s island from The Tempest,
leading to a tortuous web of comic and dramatic
romantic entanglements. The cast includes Joyce
DiDonato, David Daniels, Danielle de Niese, Luca Pisaroni
and, in a star cameo, Plácido Domingo. The production is
conducted by early music specialist William Christie. The
director is Phelim McDermott.

IMZ MEMBER NEWSSAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY
Recording John Adams
Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony will release a hybrid SACD recording of two works by John Adams in conjunction with its month-long American Mavericks Festival in March 2012. Self-produced on the Orchestra’s SFS Media label, the recording features the 1985 SFS commission Harmonielehre and Short Ride in a Fast Machine, a work commissioned by Michael Tilson Thomas in 1986.
The recording will be available for pre-release by download exclusively from Apple’s iTunes Music Store beginning 15 February, the composer’s birthday. National and international retail release for the recording will be 13 March.
One of America’s most admired and respected composers, John Adams has enjoyed a strong relationship with the San Francisco Symphony for more than 30 years…
“Michael called me back in 1986 when he was opening a new music festival in Massachusetts […] and he asked me to do a fanfare. […] how do you write a fanfare when Copland has already done it so well? I thought about it […] a former brother-in-law asked me at about 1 in the morning if I would like to take a ride with him in his Lamborghini […] he drove very, very fast. The idea of a piece that had that combination of excitement and thrill and was just on the edge of anxiety or terror was the motivating force […]. [Short Ride in a Fast Machine] starts with the click of the wood block and that wood block never changes, it just keeps driving and it’s sort of like a gauntlet through which a 100-piece orchestra has to pass.”
(John Adams)
John Adams’ writings and more about his work can be enjoyed on his website, www.earbox.com.
On 15 March, Michael Tilson Thomas leads the SFS in the world premiere of Absolute Jest, a new work by Adams commissioned for the SFS centennial season, with additional performances in Chicago, Ann Arbor and Carnegie Hall.

THE METROPOLITAN OPERA
Beverly Sills Artist Award For Angela
MeadeSoprano Angela Meade has been named the
recipient of the seventh annual Beverly Sills Artist
Award for young singers at the Metropolitan Opera.
The $50,000 award, the largest of its kind in the
United States, is designated for extraordinarily gifted
singers between the ages of 25 and 40 who have
already appeared in featured solo roles at the Met.
The award, in honour of Beverly Sills, was
established in 2006 by an endowment gift from
Agnes Varis, a managing director on the Met board,
and her husband, Karl Leichtman, to help further
recipients’ careers, including funding for voice
lessons, vocal coaching, language lessons, related
travel costs, and other professional assistance. Sills,
who died in 2007, was well known as a supporter
and friend to developing young artists, and this
award continues her legacy as an advocate for rising
singers.
Angela Meade made her Met debut in 2008 as
Elvira in Verdi’s Ernani, a role she repeated this
season in a revival on 2 February. She has also sung
the Countess in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro
(2009), and earlier this season, the showpiece title
role in Donizetti’s Anna Bolena. Her 2007 win in the
Met’s National Council Auditions was documented
in Susan Froemke’s acclaimed film The Audition. In
summer 2010, she achieved widespread acclaim for
her performance in the notoriously challenging title
role of Bellini’s Norma at the Caramoor Festival, and
in summer 2011, she was a featured soloist in the
Met’s Summer Recital Series.

CLASSICAL:NEXT
A new forum for the future of classical music
2012 will see the inauguration of an international forum for classical and art music: Classical:NEXT will focus on the wonderful art of classical music – and on how to take it to
its next level. From 30 May until 2 June international professionals from all sectors of the classical music scene will gather at the Gasteig in Munich for the first edition of this new
annual event – festivals, arts presenters, publishers, labels, music educators, concert halls, promoters, media, producers and, of course, the classical music artists.
Classical:NEXT is the only event exclusively dedicated to classical music for all sectors on an international level. The forum aims to create cross-
sector networks to negotiate new solutions for the challenges facing classical music professionals.
This aim is likely to be fulfilled: Classical:NEXT received an overwhelming international response recently – the expo stands were sold out within weeks and more than 100
proposals have been made for the conference as well as showcases. Many international companies and institutions have announced their attendance at
this year’s start-up edition and indicated their support to help Classical:NEXT become the main platform for the classical music scene in
coming years. A commonly heard phrase among classical music key players at recent professional gatherings was “See you next time in Munich.”
Now, the classical music world is looking forward to the first details of the program which are to be announced soon. The project was initiated by CLASS, the German
Association for independent classical music labels, and is produced by the renowned world music expo WOMEX. An IMZ film program will complement the Classical:NEXT jury-
selected conference and live showcases, which will host new talents and innovative presentation formats, in which both art and accompanying information is brought to the
audience by an up-to-date use of media.

EUROPEAN FESTIVALS ASSOCIATION
60 YEARS ON - THE DIAMOND JUBILEE
In 2012, the European Festivals Association celebrates the 60th anniversary of its foundation. Under the motto “60 Years On:
Festivals and the World”, the festival network is setting up a broad range of activities. Throughout the year, EFA will join forces with
hundreds of festivals and its partners around the world to celebrate, commemorate and in particular reflect on the present and future of
arts festivals.
EFA was founded in Geneva/Switzerland in 1952 by philosopher Denis de Rougemont and composer Igor Markevitch.
“Together with our 111 members – individual festivals, national festival associations and cultural networks – from 40 countries, sister
organisations, and partners networks from all over the world, we will raise our voice for the arts, for culture and for festivals in Europe
and the world,” states EFA President Darko Brlek. A key highlight will be the Jubilee Gala on 23 –26 May in Bergen/Norway, coorganised by
the Bergen International Festival that also celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2012. The high-level event will welcome around 170
participants, including EFA's founding members, national and international politicians, sister festival networks from Africa, Asia and the Arab
world, as well as the press. It coincides with the opening of the Bergen International Festival that, in 2012, will offer an outstanding artistic

FLANDERS MUSIC CENTRE
RESOLUTION “ACTION PLAN FOR MUSIC IN FLANDERS”
RATIFIED
On 14 December 2011, the plenary meeting of Flemish parliament approved the resolution Action
plan for music in Flanders. This resolution proposes 15 concrete recommendations and offers
useful and effective guidelines for a sustainable and stimulating government music policy.
The proposal was made by politicians Philippe De Coene, Johan Verstreken, Lieven Dehandschutter, Paul
Delva, Herman Schueremans, Bart Caron and Yamila Idrissi. The recommendations concern
internationalisation and talent development, copyright, financing and standards for noise control as well as
music education and patrimony, and respond directly to current needs and recent developments within
the music industry. The proposal also emphasises how deeply music is rooted in our society and how
socially important a strong and affluent music industry really is.
Seventeen Organisations, One Voice
The industry, represented in the MuziekOverleg deliberation platform took part in laying the foundations
of the proposal. In 2010 the MuziekOverleg published Music is Life! An integrated vision for the music
industry presenting a clear survey of the challenges the Flemish music sector is facing and the building
blocks that are needed to meet these challenges. The MuziekOverleg platform was started in 2007 by the
Flanders Music Centre, service desk for the professional music industry. The idea was to initiate structural
dialogue with the government and to develop long-term views for the entire industry. The platform was
recently recognized as an official discussion partner by culture minister Schauvliege. The first
recommendation to be followed...
