Getting around Booktown
With thousands of visitors expected to attend Booktown over
the weekend of 3-4 May, a number of traffic and parking
changes will be in place to allow the event to be conducted
safely. Roadblocks will be in place in:
Fraser Street, between Templeton Street and Service
Street
Fraser Street between Service Street and Creswick Road
Templeton St between Fraser Street and the Union Bank
Bailey St between the Old Post Office building and the
Bottle Museum
The closures will be in place on from 4.30 pm Friday 2 May
(to allow marquees and tents to be set up) until 4.30pm on
Sunday 4 May. The roadblocks will give access at night, with
the exception of Fraser Street between Templeton and Service
streets which will remain closed for the duration of the event.
While through traffic will be detoured around these areas,
residents will still have access to homes. All affected residents
and traders should by now have received letters detailing these
arrangements.
Visitors will be encouraged to park in four designated car
parks operating at the Showgrounds, the Community Centre, the
Bottle Museum and the Primary School. A parking fee of $5
will apply, and this includes the cost of the program. Four free
shuttle buses will run to and from the car parks throughout the
weekend, bringing visitors to the centre of town. Programs will
also be available for sale at information stands in Fraser Street
and at the Town Hall for $2.
Residents are also reminded that ABC Radio National’s The
Book Show and Bush Telegraph will present a live broadcast
from the Clunes Library on Friday 2 May 2008 in the lead up to
Booktown.
Presenters Ramona Koval (The Book Show) and Michael
MacKenzie (Bush Telegraph) will host a variety of special
guests to discuss books, writing, rural renewal and much more
during their two-hour broadcast from 10am.
Visitors are welcome to join the audience at the library or
listen in on ABC Radio National and via the live stream at
abc.net.au/rn.

Celebrating WORDS in the Shire of Hepburn Poets, authors, town criers, Morris dancers, comedians,
actors and historians will descend upon Daylesford in August
for the annual WORDS IN WINTER Celebrations which have
become a MUST DO for visitors as well locals.
The Celebrations originated in Daylesford seven years ago
and have since spread through the Shire to include Clunes,
Creswick and Trentham.
This year the weekends of Celebrations will be preceded
by fascinating entertainments including “Get Forked”, a
Renaissance dinner at the Ellender winery on July 19, and “Just
Three Words”, a zany verbal bout, in the Old Hepburn Hotel on
July 31. The official opening weekend in Daylesford and Clunes
is August 1, 2 and 3. Trentham’s weekend is August 7, 8 and 9.
Creswick is yet to be announced.
The opening of the Daylesford Words in Winter
Celebrations will be held in the Convent Gallery at 6.30pm on
August 1 when works by local artists highlighting WORDS will
be displayed.
The town criers who wander Vincent Street, Daylesford,
on August 2 will inform visitors of the various attractions while
the Morris dancers will delight with their ancient village green
dancing.
In various cafes, halls, galleries, libraries, restaurants,
wine bars, neighbourhood centres and bookshops throughout the
Shire over the weekends you’ll come across authors and poets
putting magic into WORDS with enchanting performances to
please, stimulate and entertain.
In Daylesford there will be visits by popular authors, oral
history in the historic Daylesford Courthouse, Super 8 films,
poetry competitions, a cabaret, a Clever Town Challenge,
concerts, an open poetry session, a writers’ workshop,
performance novella, plays, a Scrabble contest and the very
popular Book Ball to which people go dressed up as characters
from a book, or the hero of their own autobiography, and bop
away into the wee hours in the beautiful gold-rush era
Daylesford Town Hall.
The salute to WORDS by local and imported artists takes
place day and night with admission to most daytime events
between $2 and $10.
The printed program for Daylesford and Trentham’s
WORDS IN WINTER Celebrations 2008 will be available early
June at the Daylesford and Regional Visitor Information Centre
- 03 5321 6123 - and on www.wordsinwinter.com from mid-
May. From July 1 visit www.clunes.org/booktour for Clunes’
program and contact 5345 1114 for Creswick’s program.

"FRIENDS OF QUEENS PARK & THE CREEK”
APRIL REPORT SUB COMMITTEE OF C.T.D.A.
Another productive Working Bee this month Cleaning -
Weeding - removing ivy from picnic area near Oval entrance.
Thanks to all volunteers, including Wesley College students.
The next Working Bee is planned for MAY 24th (SATURDAY)
- anytime you can spare between 9am & 12 noon. Please
encourage your friends to come and help with this very
worthwhile and necessary task. A little work done regularly
prevents the necessity for major works later on.
Ballarat Grammar School -Year 9 students have kindly
volunteered to help with the task on June 5th, as part of their
World Environment Day project. Meeting place for these
working bees is always at the Picnic Table Site just inside the
Oval Entrance. (Bring along gloves, secateurs and any useful
weeding tools, and some drinking water).
Arborist reports will be supplied & published in this
Newsletter in due course concerning
- 5 large old trees along the creek near the oval entrance.
These trees have NOT been poisoned but need to be assessed,
following the drought, for their health & our safety.
- 3 large trees in Queens park which are dying, due to age
and drought stress.
PARTERRE GARDEN
Talks are planned for the next meeting to discuss ongoing
maintenance & watering of this garden. Many roses and box
shrubs are in a poor state having been badly affected by the
drought. Dead plants will be replaced. Roses will be pruned at
the appropriate time.
CREEK WORKING PARTY
- talks are ongoing concerning the replanting of trees along the
creek. The Steart Family commemorative Plaque, (Stolen many
years ago) will be replaced after final consultation with Laurie
& Pat (Cook) through the Historical Society. A Community
Celebration to recognise the restoration of the Fountain and
work in Queens Park is being planned for the end of June.
Details will be published in the next Newsletter, and also
displayed on the Community Noticeboard next month.
CLUNES, Special Awards Presentation
On Sunday afternoon, March 30th three members of
the Clunes RSL community received special awards. RSL
Members, friends and four generations of family members
of the recipients, some from as far away as West Australia
and Queensland, filled the historic Clunes Town Hall to
witness the occasion.
Major Frank Bell representing the State President Ma-
jor David MacLachlan AO presented the Meritorious Ser-
vice Medal to Life Member Mr. Syd Duncan.
Syd has been an RSL member for 60 years, Sub-
Branch secretary for 35 years and Appeals officer for 30
years as well as giving dedicated service to the RSL in
many other areas.
Major Bell then presented the National Certificate of
Merit with Gold Badge to Mrs. Joan Robbins and Mrs
Jean Higgins.
Joan has been a tireless worker for the RSL as a
Women’s Auxiliary member for almost 60 years and con-
tributed in many ways to the successful running of the
Clunes RSL including organising indoor bowls competi-
tions and card afternoons.
Jean is in her 26th year as Secretary of the Auxiliary
and has organised an extraordinary variety of fund raising
and social events throughout this time for the enjoyment
of the whole community of Clunes as well as carrying out
her secretarial role.
A feature of the presentations was the reading of the
nominations which listed the enormous amount of volun-
tary work done for the RSL and the community of Clunes
by these three people. They are an inspiration to us all.

Bendigo Bank Update
Creswick, Monday 21 April: New banking services are now
available in Clunes, following the recent transfer of the Clunes
Agency to the Creswick Community Bank® Branch. Creswick
Community Bank® Branch manager, Les Vercoe, said the
partnership will improve access to banking services for people
living in the Clunes area.
“We are thrilled to join forces with the Clunes Agency and
look forward to offering an extensive range of products and
services to the community,” he said. “All existing and any new
business written via the Clunes Agency will also have a positive
impact on the amount of profits directed back into the Clunes
and district community.”
The Creswick Community Bank® has also recently made a
portable EFTPOS machine available at no cost to the Clunes
Tourist and Development Association for use during the Clunes
Booktown weekend.
Les Vercoe will be at the Clunes Agency (Clunes
Newsagency, 49 Fraser Street) every Thursday from 10am to
1pm. “I’ll be available to discuss the banking needs of Clunes
and district residents,” Mr Vercoe said. “I’m also more than
happy to visit customers at their home or business, but the office
at the Agency will always be available for those choosing to use
this facility.”
Residents are encouraged to make an appointment by contacting
the Clunes Agency on 5345 3223 or
Creswick Community Bank® Branch on 5345 1233.
