MEMBER DUES REDUCED FOR 2020-2021 YEAR
The Finance Committee met on May 4th to discuss the club dues for the 2020 – 2021 Rotary year. There has been concern that the current level of dues may cause a hardship on some of the club’s members because of the economic conditions surrounding Covid-19. We had asked for relief from District but basically they said no except that we could pay district dues in November instead of July. The Board accepted the Finance Committee recommendation that we make a temporary reduction in annual dues from $300 per year to $200 per year for the 2020 -2021 Rotary year. This recommendation will make for a very tight club budget but the committee feels it in the best interest of the club and the club membership. This reduction will apply to the 2020 – 2021 year only with the plan to return to the current dues schedule in the 2021- 2022 year. Members, of course, may contribute more than $200 to the Club, The Foundation, Polio Plus or any combination of the above.

Lots of online school going on here...someone had requested a picture of me in my lab coat and so I had this one taken recently. I guess my real work picture is me with a mask on....we wear them ALL day long. It does make the days seem longer! Of note - many children won’t keep their masks on and the youngest like to pull other people’s masks off! Such is the life of a pediatrician! Kids are not natural social distancers Most anyway.

Update on PDG Rose Bowman Bus Memorial Fund
Funds have now been received so materials may be ordered for the Global Grant which will provide a year round
water supply and proper filtration for the citizens of four villages in Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco State, Mexico (Rotary
District 4140). The villages are near the small town of El Tuito. El Tuito was the recipient of the ambulance and
shuttle bus that were delivered in December of 2017. Due to a generous donation of an engine, about $15,000
remained in the bus fund. The decision was made to use that money, leveraged with District 5020 and Rotary
Foundation monies.
The projects will be spread over several Rotary Global Grants and when completed will greatly upgrade drinking
water for about 4,000 individuals. The Rotary Foundation is increasingly insistent that community education
concerning hygiene, filter maintenance, on-going funding for maintenance and a permanent community oversight
group in each village are all required ingredients for sustained success. We believe this project will be a model in
that regard. That is largely due to the incredible contribution of Bob Wubbena (Rotary Club of Olympia) and
support of the Thurston County Rotary Water Projects Committee. The project will greatly benefit from the very
active involvement of Rotarians Ignacio Palomera (Rotary Club Amanecer El Tuito).
Rose was a dear friend as well as a fabulous Rotarian. Leon Bowman (Twin Cities Rotary) asked me to again say
“thank you.” You made this great news possible with your help and generous donations.

A Longview Mystery
This oft-told story came to my attention recently. Rotarians, let’s solve this mystery since it may involve “one of our own.” Legend has it that a Longview Rotarian was the model for this delightful Garden Statue. Look closely, please. Then Submit your best guess to [email protected]. Rumor has it a prize could be involved.
ZOOMERS
Approximately 40 club members participated in the 1st ever club Zoom meeting on May 6th. Thanks
to Mark Schmutz for a very meaningful invocation. Our newest member, Dwayne Edwards, still
needs to be inducted but was present and introduced. Presentations were made by Chris Searing –
Finance, Brian Chace – Membership, John Bard – Tour de Blast, Marc Silva – Crafted, Keith Larson
– Squirrel Fest and Community Service, Sarah Koss – Literacy and Cathy Barr – Scholarships. John
Paul, Finemaster, needed help from his very capable three children to rack up fines from members
present and not present. President Neil Zick encouraged everyone to consider participating in the
May 16 District on-line training sessions. He also explained the Board’s decision to reduce dues
temporarily in 2020-21 from $300 to $200.
