WARMSWORTH CRICKET CLUB

Since the last edition we have been busy getting things ready for the New Season, which by the time

you are reading this will be underway.

The hard work that has been undertaken on the ground has paid off and once again the Square is

looking in superb condition and will once again be one of the best in the area.

Over the winter we have seen the addition of a number of new Players to the club. We have signed

Daniel Oades from Bawtry and Adam Saynor from Fishlake, also joining the club are Barry Connolly

and Afsar Hussain who are returning to the game after a short break. We hope all these players

settle in at the club and along with all the remaining players have an enjoyable competitive season.

We have also been working hard to secure much needed sponsorship for the club and have been

successful in securing three main sponsors, Tara Lounge, Yorkshire Kitchens and Philford Design

Engineers. More on this news in the Next Issue.

If any companies would like to advertise in and around the ground or on the club website please get

in touch and we will try and sort out a mutually suitable package.

Around 350 years ago in Edlington, lived an Irish nobleman by the name of Viscount

Robert Molesworth the 1st, of Swords. Swords was and is a town to the north of Dublin,

Ireland. The Viscount came to England through his work as an MP for the West Riding of

Yorkshire (a constituency now known as Don Valley) and settled at Edlington wood. His

property was called Blow Hall Manor which, unfortunately, is no longer with us.

I found the following extract in a book from 1837 entitled ‘The English Counties

Delineated - by Thomas Moule, it reads: “In Edlington wood is Blow Hall, a conical pile of

un-hewn stones and a double dyke. [Surrounded by] a bank of earth and stone about

three feet in height and as many in breadth which may be traced the whole extent of the

wood in a straight line from north-west to south-east....”

He lived at the Hall with his wife, Lady Letitia Molesworth; his children, and his faithful

‘snow-white’ Greyhound.

Robert was said to have been extremely close to his canine companion so that they were

rarely apart, enjoying regular excursions between London, Ireland, and Edlington. Legend

dictates that the trusted Greyhound one day went above the call of duty, the story of

which goes this way:

The White Greyhound

of Edlington

9

Viscount Molesworth was busy working in the gardens of his Edlington estate, when

‘nature called’ he started to make his way to the outside toilet. The dog was not keen on

the idea and, using his teeth, clamped onto his masters tailcoat in order to dissuade him.

The Viscount, on making a second attempt, was met with the same response from the

hound. Surprised by this, Robert ordered one of his gardeners to go ahead to the loo to

check that all was well. On opening the door he was immediately shot dead by a villain

who had been hiding in there, most probably lying in wait for darkness so as to rob the

house when all were sleeping.

This act of supreme protection forged an unbreakable bond between dog and master.

Some years later, on the death of the Greyhound, Robert erected a fine monument under

a yew tree in the grounds of Blow Hall Manor. The monument took the shape of an urn

resting on a square pedestal, the front of which carried a carving of the faithful dog on

white marble. There was also an inscription in Latin, which when translated, read:

“Stay traveller, nor wonder that a lamented dog is thus interred with funeral honour. But ah, what

a dog! His beautiful form and snow-white colour, pleasing manners and sporting playfulness, af-

fection, obedience, and fidelity, made him the delight of his master. To whose side he closely ad-

hered, with his eager companions of the chase. He delighted in attending him. Whenever the

mind of his lord was depressed, he would assume fresh spirit and animation. A master, not un-

grateful for his merits, has here in tears deposited his remains in this marble urn, in the year

1714.”

The memory of this legend being passed down from generation to generation led to there

being a street (Blow Hall Crescent) and a public house named after the tale, but the pub

has been replaced with a new development and the houses on the street demolished.

I have been told that the monument is still in existence but I do not know its exact loca-

tion. If you know of its whereabouts then please let me know.

Unshoesual on Mill lane,

Warmsworth will be holding

an open day on Wednesday

2nd May to promote their new

range of Gandy’s Flip Flops.

Now Gandy’s Flip Flop, as you would

imagine, is no ordinary flip flop. The

idea for this business was created from

tragic circumstances by three brothers

after their Mother and Father were

killed in the Boxing Day Tsunami in

December 2004.

Matty, Paul and Rob Forkan set up their

new fashion business with the hope of

raising enough funds to open an

orphanage in Goa in memory of their

parents, Sandra and Kevin Forkan.

The brothers were on holiday with their parents and their youngest sister Rosie, when

disaster struck. Luckily, the boys survived along with their sister Rosie, unfortunately

Sandra and Kevin died trying to save their family.

Their older sisters’, Marie and Jo were in the

UK at the time, and the family, who had

moved to Goa in 1999, relocated back to the

UK to live with them.

As well as raising funds for a new Orphanage,

10% of proceeds go towards the ‘Children

walking Tall’ charity which helps slum and

street children in India.

You can purchase your Gandy Flip flops at

Unshoesual, and meet one of the brothers

who will be attending the open day in May.
