ANDRÉ LEWIS I Artistic Director JEFF HERD I Executive Director

It was almost ten years ago when we first presented Peter Pan in Winnipeg to critical acclaim. Even from the start, Peter Pan surpassed our most optimistic expectations and we take great pride in being able to provide this wonderful ballet to children of all ages. Since then we’ve toured Peter Pan to many cities across Canada and the US.

As we wind down our 2015-16 season, we are very excited to bring back this high-flying masterpiece. Choreographed by Jorden Morris with music by highly regarded British composers Lord Britten, Montague Phillips, and Ron Goodwin, Peter Pan is perfect for families and anyone who never wants to grow up.

Peter Pan tells the heart-warming tale of Peter, who invites Wendy to Neverland to be the mother of his gang of Lost Boys. Many adventures ensue, including the near-death of Tinker Bell and a climatic confrontation with Peter’s nemesis, the evil Captain Hook. This action-packed performance brings the ballet to flight with flying sequences by Flying by Foy and sword fights directed by Daniel Ford Beavis.

TO OUR AUDIENCE

Peter Pan is a perfect balance of daring stunts with wondrous fun, with just enough sprinkling of pixie dust.

RWB’s version of Peter Pan is based on the original story by JM Barrie. Although written many decades ago, the message behind the story still resounds to us in our modern age – that our reality is shaped by what we believe. We create our own reality and we create that reality through our imagination.

We would like to thank you, our audience, patrons, donors, supporters and funders who have helped and continue to help the Royal Winnipeg Ballet bring our imagination to life. There is no limit to what the RWB can achieve with the support you’ve given us and for continuing to believe in us. Just like in Peter Pan, dreams can become reality when we nurture them. Thank you for dreaming with us for the last 76 years and for continuing to nurture our creativity.

SYNOPSIS

ACT IAt the Darling family home in London, young Wendy dances in her bedroom with Nana, the faithful family dog. Her brothers John and Michael arrive and join in the fun. Mrs. Darling and Liza the maid enter to ready the children for bed. Mr. Darling arrives and is worried about being late for a dinner party. After the boys pretend to be pirates and kidnap Father, the playful children foil all of Mother’s attempts to get them into bed and convince their parents to tell them a story. Finally peace is achieved and with the children drifting off to sleep, Mother and Father leave for the dinner party.

When the coast is clear, Tinker Bell enters the nursery in search of Peter’s shadow, which he lost while listening at the window to Wendy telling stories to the boys. After madly searching the room she finally finds it in the washstand. Peter enters and tries frantically to catch his shadow. Unable to do so, he slumps down beside Wendy’s bed and begins to cry.

Wendy awakens to see Peter crying and offers to sew his shadow back on. She is quite taken with Peter and seems to have a vague recollection of him. She offers him a kiss and when he doesn’t know what that is, gives him a thimble. Peter invites Wendy to Neverland where she can be the mother and tell stories to the Lost Boys. Meanwhile Tinker Bell is very jealous and upset at Peter’s attention to Wendy. After accepting Peter’s invitation, Wendy wakens John and Michael who are overjoyed to see Peter and Tinker Bell in the nursery. All three children have a quick flying lesson and with the help of Tinker Bell’s fairy dust take off through the nursery window. After flying over London they are off to adventures in Neverland – second to the right and then straight on till morning!

In Neverland, Tiger Lily, the Fairies and the Crocodile are in the lagoon when they hear the pirates coming and quickly hide. Smee tells Captain Hook that Peter has returned to the island with new treasures when suddenly the Crocodile appears and tries to get another taste of Hook. Peter brings the children to the Fairy forest where all of the sprites dance in celebration. The Lost Boys arrive and everyone is happy that Peter has returned to Neverland. But the merriment does not last long when the Pirates challenge Peter and the boys to a fight. Dueling with Hook, Peter is almost defeated, when just in the nick of time the Crocodile chases Hook away.

11

ACT IIIn London, Mr. Darling and Liza try to console Mrs. Darling who is heartbroken over the disappearance of the children. Meanwhile in Neverland Wendy has settled into the role of Mother to the Lost Boys. When Peter goes to check on the island, Wendy and Tinker Bell give the boys their medicine and tuck everyone into bed for the night unaware of the adventure just ahead. The Pirates enter the underground home and capture all the children. Only Tinker Bell escapes! Captain Hook, disappointed in not finding Peter, poisons the medicine bottle in hopes that he will drink from it when he returns.

Later as Peter gathers his sword and his courage before heading out to save the children, he remembers to take his medicine. But before he can, Tinker Bell drinks it herself to save Peter’s life. Tinker Bell begins to fade despite Peter’s attempt to revive her. She slips away. Only the Fairies, having sensed Tinker Bell weakening, are able to revive her by dancing until she is magically resurrected. On the pirate ship the new “recruits” are put to work. Peter flies to the ship and after a fierce battle defeats Captain Hook and the pirates.

After celebrating their victory, Peter begrudgingly agrees to take Wendy, John and Michael home. Wendy is worried that her brothers are forgetting their real parents. The Fairies fly the ship home, where the children surprise Mrs. Darling in the nursery. Mr. Darling, Nana & Liza hear the commotion and rush in where they are introduced to the Lost Boys who have decided it is time to grow up.

After the others leave the nursery, Wendy returns, having sensed that Peter is still nearby. He has been waiting outside the window. After a tender moment, with Peter promising to return, Wendy watches him fly off into the stars. And on to another adventure!

JORDEN MORRIS I Choreographer

Jorden Morris is an Alberta-born, internationally renowned ballet choreographer and director. He trained at the Banff Centre School of Fine Arts and The Royal Winnipeg Ballet School. Jorden began his career with the RWB after graduating, and quickly rose to the rank of principal dancer, performing lead roles in both classical and contemporary works. After retiring from his career on stage, Jorden studied choreography and theater arts at New York University, as well as early French choreography from Claude Bessy and Serge Golovine of the Paris Opera.

Jorden premiered his first work in 1999, a one-act interpretation of Alexandre Dumas’ The Three Musketeers.

He choreographed three works in 2000: One for the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham, that would go on to be performed at the Birmingham Arts Festival. Jorden was also commissioned by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet to choreograph two pieces for HRH Queen Elizabeth II during her Canadian visit that year, which were broadcast nationally by the CBC.

Jorden then expanded his career by taking the position of Ballet Master and assistant to the Director at Boston Ballet. Jorden rose to the rank of Chief Ballet Master and was the interim Director for the 2001 season.

After returning to Canada as Associate School Director for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Jorden was commissioned to create his first full-length work Peter Pan. This production became the biggest box office in the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s history, until it was surpassed three years later by his next full-length ballet, Moulin Rouge ® - The Ballet. Since its creation in 2009, Moulin Rouge ® - The Ballet has been on tour across North America and Europe and has been seen by over 180,000 people in theatres. Moulin Rouge was made into a full feature film in 2013 and distributed by Cineplex Odeon.

Jorden continued his work with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, creating new works inspired by intriguing artists, from painter Egon Schiele to poet/songwriter Leonard Cohen.

Jorden has also choreographed for the Genie and Gemini awards which were broadcast nationally and featured dancers from The National Ballet of Canada and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.

BIOGRAPHIES

In this capacity he has worked for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre and Rainbow Stage. Other credits include the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards and the TV series Falcon Beach. Previous designs for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet include Moulin Rouge ® - The Ballet and Peter Pan with Jorden Morris as choreographer. Andrew has previously worked with Mark Godden in Midsummer Nights Dream at Ballet Memphis and has recently been working with Koba Entertainment on children’s theatre.

DANIEL FORD BEAVIS I Original Fight Choreography Daniel is happy to have worked with the RWB on this production. While he is no stranger to stage combat, this is his first time working with a ballet company on this level. He is busy teaching and working in film and television and has appeared as a drunken brawler in The Velvet Devil on CBC, he was lit on fire in the film Urban Assault, and he has been doing fight direction for Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan for a number of years.

Daniel taught in the Drama Department at the University of Saskatchewan as well as at workshops in Regina, Seattle and Edmonton. This past year he taught at the Banff Centre for the Arts. Daniel is very honored to have worked with so many talented people on such an ambitious production. He has always been a big fan of pirates, so he is pleased to be part of

bringing Peter, Wendy, Captain Hook and all the rest to life on the stage.

BILL WILLIAMS I Lighting Designer Bill Williams is a well known Canadian lighting designer, specializing in both stage and architectural lighting design. With over 500 project credits, Bill has worked across Canada and in Europe, Asia, South America, the USA and the UK.

Previous lighting designs for the RWB include: The War Collection, The Seasons, Mahler 4: Eternity is Now, Magnificat, Le Sacre du Printemps and Family Scenes.

As a dance lighting designer, Bill has worked with many chorographers, including: Oscar Araiz, Anna Blewchamp, Rachel Browne, Anne Ditchburn, David Earl, Rodney Griffin, Cliff Keuter, Judith Marcuse, Sophie Maslow, Robert Moulton, Brian Macdonald, Vicente Nebrada, Sandra Neels, Linda Rabin, Kelly Robinson, Paul Sanasardo, Margo Sappington, Stuart Sebastian, Paddy Stone, Lynne Taylor, James Waring and Norbert Vesak.

When not designing lighting, Bill is actively involved as an author, teacher and webmaster.

Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Tristan Dobrowney has been dancing since the age of 6. His dance training began at the Vesnianka Academy of Ukrainian Dance, and he was taking ballet

classes by age 12. He was accepted into the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Professional Division program at the age of 14 while completing his high school education at the University of

Winnipeg Collegiate. As a student, Dobrowney danced in RWB productions of Nutcracker and Swan Lake and performed with the Brandon Dance Ensemble and Dance Fredericton.

He also received various awards and scholarships and took part in the 2008 Banff Centre summer dance program. After graduating from the Royal

Winnipeg Ballet School Professional Division in 2008, he joined the RWB Company as an Apprentice and was promoted to the Corps de

Ballet in 2011 and to Second Soloist in 2014.

Dobrowney is known for strong ballet technique with his jumps, turns and beautiful extensions.

“He is also an excellent partner, confident and attentive to the needs of a ballerina en pointe. Versatility is also one of Tristan’s strengths; he is strong in modern and contemporary work and has real dynamic flair in his character dancing,” Jorden Morris, choreographer and former RWB School Associate Director.

Dobrowney’s repertoire includes a vast array of classical and contemporary works. He has taken on such leading roles as The Prince in Nutcracker, Matthew in

Moulin Rouge® – The Ballet and Curdie in Twyla Tharp’s The Princess & The Goblin. He has performed in Peter Pan, Romeo + Juliet, Dracula, Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Val Caniparoli’s A Cinderella Story and The Handmaid’s Tale. For the world premiere of Wonderland he danced as part of the Tweedledee & Tweedledum duo. His other RWB repertoire includes Mauricio Wainrot’s Carmina Burana; Peter Quanz’s Quantz by Quanz, Luminous and In Tandem; Mark Godden’s As Above, So Below; Itzik Gaili’s Hikarizatto and Twyla Tharp’s In the Upper Room.

In 2013 Tristan was invited to perform the world premiere of Pierced with Move: the company under the direction of Josh Beamish. For the past three seasons Dobrowney was invited by

acclaimed choreographer Peter Quanz to perform in Q DANCE, and in the summer of 2015 he travelled to Wuxi, China as a Guest Artist with the Wuxi Song & Dance Theatre for the premiere of Quanz’s The

Red Crowned Crane. He most recently danced the role of Gordon in Going Home Star – Truth and Reconciliation during its 2016 Canadian tour.

We are very honoured to have had Dobrowney’s talent in the RWB School and Company and would like to thank him for his great performances over the years. WE WISH HIM GREAT SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN HIS FUTURE ENDEAVOURS.
