  • URBAN S.O.S. WATER COMPETITION Water was the focus, for we designed and sent this project in to the urban sos water competition put on by aecom. We were also instructed to incorporate the architectural and spatial needs of the 2013 americas cup - a boat racing competition that will, for the first time, be held inside the san francisco bay.

The designed centered around creating a hotel resort with green infrastructure on pier 32. This involved creating space to view the races as well as a place store the 40 tall boats and a plan to continue using these spaces after the races were over. Also we created a water infiltration system that works with the hotel and landscape to take street water runo as well as bay water to be used for watering and supplying the rooms with fresh water.

The San Francisco Wharf has expansive concrete sidewalks and minimal plantings. We want to open these sidewalks for bioswales and additional plantings.

The seating along the edge of the wharf are large concrete uncomfortable blocks. We want to oer pedestrians a comfortable place to relax.

The buildings and views arounf the wharf are iconic. We want to create better view points and play of San Franciscos existing architecture.

  • CANOPY

CAMPGROUNDSExperience The Forest Like Never Before

An unparalleled camping experience 100 ft. up in the redwood forest. Canopy Campgrounds allows visitors to do what he or she originally set out to do- immerse themselves completely in nature. The platforms allow visitors to set up their campsite as they would on the ground. The platform and campsite design creates a healthy symbiotic relationship between the camper and each Redwood tree. This provides insight into the

unseen world of these ancient canopies.

    Big Sur, California

  • THE LAST OF THE GIANTS 24 HOUR PLATFORM USE

    SECTION CONCEPT

    FAUNA FLORA

Canopy Campground is the solution for the ultimate camping experience; Complete immersion in nature. Also there is a need to educate about the importance of preserving redwood forests and connect people with these timeless giants. What better way to become educated then spend the

night in the arms of the worlds tallest living organism.

Until about 15 years ago it was believed that the redwood canopy was the equivalant of a desert and was largely ignored. We now understand that canopy of redwood forests are closer to coral reefs in biodiversity than the desert. Forest canopies hold roughly half of all animal and plant life. This discovery can

be shared at canopy campground in a safe and responsible way.

By examining campers typical 24 hour day I was able to decide how the square footage would need to be split to accomodate the time spent doing dierent activities.

  • Step into a safety harness before putting on backpack full of supplies

Connect carabiner hanging from your canopy platform to harness.

Double check your harness and all your connections. Have a Friend double check your equipment as well

Have a professional arborists inspect the tree for hazardous epicormic branches and any other health issues.

Install tree collars to trunk. Place nuts and bolts and tighten to 90 lbs per square foot pressure.

Install inside knee braces. Bolt at 45-90 from knee brace to support platform.

Install support joists and decking. Connect at an octagon around the tree. Bolt to the lip of the tree collar as well as the knee braces.

Install outer knee braces. Bolt at 45-90 from knee brace to support platform.

    PLATFORM CONSTRUCTION

    WINCH LIFT INSTRUCTIONSTREE COLLAR

    TREE COLLAR UNIT

The engineering of the tree collar unit is the essentail component to realizing the canopy campgrounds experience. The tree collar is able to support the platform without putting one screw, nail, or saw cut into the host redwood tree. The secret lies in the tension applied to the tree by tightening bolts between four collar units around the trunk of the tree. The tree is monitered and each year the bolts are loosened a fraction of an inch to allow for trunk growth.

    CONSTRUCTION METHODSInnovative Technique to Protect

    Old Growth Redwoods

Working with the folks from the Capillano Suspension bridges in Vancouver, Canada, I was able to create a design method that will support the platform without putting one screw, nail, or saw cut into the host redwood tree. This is a very important aspect of running a sustainable and ecoligically responsible campground.

    Big Sur, California

  • Useremote device attached to winch for ascending and descend-ing at desired speed

Once the remote is engaged, the winch will start pulling you upward.

The winch will take you safely to the platform above.

Make sure to make stops on the way up to see the redwood ecosystem at work. At dierent heights you will experience a variety of epiphytes and redwood animals.

Once you arrive at the top engage the yellow landing button. The arm above you will pivot, pulling you onto the platform through a spring-action gate.

Youve arrived! Welcome to your site at canopy campground! Not to worry the spring-action gate will close behind you. Enjoy the incredible views and rich climate!

Install support joists, decking, and rim joists. Connect at an octagon around the tree. Bolt to the inner platform as well as the outer knee braces.

Install wood columns at 5 intervals around the platform. Bolt to rim joists.

Install cable railings at 6 height intervals for safety requirements.

    RAIN PROTECTION

In the redwoods, rain showers can be expected periodically from late fall to early spring . Normally this would ruin any good camping trip. But a simple pull on a rod will fan out the canopy umbrella in a full 360 degrees protecting the platform from rain.

Enjoy the unforgettable view of a rain shower from the redwood canopy. It will be an experience you wont soon forget.

  • DAILY WATER USE

Bringing a small backpacker stove as well as lightweight/durable utensils is highly recommended. Backpacking bags can be unpacked into cupboards for ease of access. Meals are prepared on slide out tables to provide a stable surface and access to food simultaneously.

Nature calls even when your 100 feet above the nearest rest room. A biodegradable bag attaches to hooks underneath the fold-down toilet seat.

When not in use the bathroom area takes up zero square footage on the platform. By folding down a toilet seat and closing a wrap-around privacy curtain a bathroom is created in seconds.

At Canopy Campgrounds the motto is leave no trace. This literally means everything a visitor packs in they pack out, and we mean EVERYTHING. The biodegradable toilet bags can be disposed of in receptacles when checking out.

California is no stranger to water shortages. Sustainable water practice is an important issue and easy to learn. Visitors at the campground must bring their own water up to the platform to cook, clean, and drink with. Only 3.8 gallons are needed daily. Visitors will leave with the ability to live o a fraction of the usual 71.6 gallons of water used daily in regular households.

Once nished cooking, table tops are slid back in place to guard food from birds and squirrels. Utensils are cleaned in sink and any scraps can be placed in the oered biodegradable bags. Water drains from a pipe straight to the redwood trunk which is able to soak up water like a sponge.

A large space is dedicated for comfortable sleeping arrangements. There is enough room to t a 3-4 person tent. By cranking a hand-powered winch a hinged door opens to reveal a hammock. The hammock provides the ultimate canopy experience. It feels as though you are suspended in mid-air among some of the earths most beautiful and magnicent trees. Lay back and stare into a canopy full of life and wonder. Or if feeling brave, one can lie on their stomach and stare 100 feet straight down to the redwood forest oor. If the heightened eect is to much for a visitor they can simply use the hammock area as extra storage during their stay.

  • DESIGN/BUILD PROCESSDesign to construction. At each new meeting with a client I take the time to let them speak their vision as I add suggestions and sketches of my own until we meet on the same page. I then take detailed measurements and photos and take in the existing yard before heading home to design

Using my measurements and Google Earth I plot the design in Autocad and use Land F/X to help design the project. For higher profile clients, or yards with architectural elements , I will typically use SketchUp to model the yard. Not nly does this help me work through the design but it is a great tool to help the client understand the plan.

I will then do an estimate of the yard and work with the client to meet their budget. From there it is important for me to work with the construction crew from project start to finish to make sure the project runs smoothly.

    AUTO CAD & LAND F/X

    PLANT SELECTION MATERIAL SELECTION

Once the project began construction, it was my responsibility to make sure things ran smoothly. I needed to make sure that the crew was following the plan and that the project was on schedule. This included daily updates from the foreman. I also needed to keep the home owner fully imformed and satisfied with how the project was moving. I would walk the site with the client when the project was finished to make sure nothing was missed.

I use Auto Cad on every design I do. Its fast, simplistic, and easy to learn new tricks everyday. A couple Auto Cad with a program called Land F/X which does the heavy lifting on the plant design. I am able to pick a plant in the massive data base upload basic info and place icons on the base map whose information such as quantity is instantly tracked and transferrable to a plant schedule.

I focus on year round interest when choosing plants. I like to have color in foliage that shows year round as well as a variety of plant sizes oand leaf textures to keep the garden interesting. Making sure the plant is available and seeing new products is very important, so many times a month I will visit nurseries.

Materials, many times are decided by a clients budget. Its important to have the landscape materials to adapt and compliment the existing space whether it is a home, oce, or resort. The right selection of materials and applied in the best way can take a project from ordinary to extraordinary.

  • FerrymanThe Ferryman property sits in a quiet cul-de-sac shaded by massive coast live oaks (Q. agrifolia). The HOA states that no healthy oak can be cut down because the property exists in a protected oak woodland. Working with the Ferryman's we decided to work with the natural layout of the woodland than try to compete against it. I presented a list of many California native shrubs, grasses, trees, and groundcover that would compliment the oaks and add to the natural scenery. We also added in a few non natives for some additional pop. Under story trees such as japenese maples, strawberry trees, and western redbuds were planted to add color with flowers and seasonal leaf change, as well as add varying height to a very one-di-mensional yard.

Using Moss boulders of varying sizes I designed a creek that flows through the yard with several small falls on the way down. The sound and look was perfect and really took the project to another level.

  • SchultzThe Schultz property sits on the edge of the 16th hole of Sun City golf course. As the Schultzs are avid golfers they like to watch folks drive the ball down the fairway when they are not golfing themselves. With nothing but a large lawn for the past 4 years they have been reduced to dragging patio chairs to the edge of their property everytime they would like to relax in their backyard

This design creates a large seating where they can talk, relax, and enjoy watching other golfers. A low wall adds additional seating as well as dimension to the yard without blocking the view of the course below. The seat wall curves beautifully back into a small hillside to becme a terraced garden. Lights built into the walls and scattered throughout the design make for a nice glow for outdoor dinner parties.

  • GroeperThe Groeper property is surrounded by protected oak woodlands in a sunny lot. The Groepers moved from England last year and wanted to re-create the look of a typical english garden while using drought tolerant species that mesh well with an oakwoodland back drop. They also wanted the hardscape to be natural material to further the connection to their expansive wooded backyard.

The design incorporates heavy usages of grasses for textures, groundcovers, varying sizes of colors and textured plants for year round interest, as well as several dierent species that bloom during dierent seasons. There was also 6 dierent types of stone placed in the yard which includes flagstone, mexican pebble, moss rock boulders, and massive basalt boulders.

  • LopezMrs. Lopez came to us looking to reduce water usage. She had a rotting deck as well as an expansive yard full of lawn. She had many dierent ideas of what she wanted so I helped by coming up with two very dierent designs. Design 1 was a curved patio that stretched out into the garden and curves and connected to a dry stream bed that ran through the yard. Design 2 is what is seen here and what she ultmately decided on.

Each of the concrete slabs has a specific size and purpose. Either to be the perfect width and length to be walked on, or the correct size to fit ex. lawn furniture. To balance out the geometric shapes with the flowing garden we placed Mexican pebble around the concrete to soften the edging. Drought tolerant species replaced the lawn, and swales were created to collect additional water.

  • KeehnerThe Keehner project, in many ways, revolved around her dog. Carol wanted to spruce up her yard but she also wanted it to be very dog friendly. Her dog Sams favorite thing to do is pusha basketball wildly around the yard destroing everything in its path. lso he tracked mud everywhere from running the same line back and forth wearing down the grass. These problems were going to take some creative solutions.

The yard was swaled and mounded to collect excess water to the pathway where it when then percolate back into the soil. The pathway matched Sams running path so no more mud. On the top of each mound I created planters which will eventually fill in with carex no-mow grass we planted. Inside these planters there are also durable plants and boulders to protect the plants from Sams ball. Both Carol and Sam are very satisfied with the result.

  • EricksonThe Erickson property sits on a sunny hillside overlooking Folsom Lake. The Ericksons wanted he property to look like the type of place where you could hold weddings, every view point had to be picturesque. They also wanted functionality in their backyard which is one massive slope.

In the front we focused on pathways and drainage. Almost a whole neighborhoods worth of run o storm water flows into the Ericksons backyard. We created swales and creek beds that help with run o but look nice year round. There is several dierent acces points to the front of the house and backyard, so I designed a large sweeping pathway to connect these points which also created garden beds in the process.

In the Backyard We terraced the slope to create a large usable patio space. The terraced garden areas provide a beautiful backdrop for the patio as well as the sound of running water from a two tiered

  • GreenbergMax Greenberg and his family of five have always dreamed of having the Resort Backyard. Currently they live in small house in Sacramento but couldnt wait to get this design started. The site currently has a dilapted house but an expansave yard. Because Max was going to bulldoze the house and yard I had the chance to design on a completely blank canvas.

Working with an architecture firm in Sacarmento, the owner of the firm and I worked together to find the best placement for the house and the guesthouse on the property. Max wanted a rectilinear yard with an upscale resort theme and a meditarranean style. I choose spanish tiles, and stucco to match that theme as well as meditaran-nean plants as well as a few tropicals to really set the design o.

  • WaggonerThe Waggoners entire backyard sits on a slope. When they came to us for a design they were completely clueless on how to design a pool without terracing the whole yard. There is the extra challenge of having a septic system running through their yard as well.

I created a two tiered pool with a retaining wall flowing around the pool and then diminishing back into the garden. This also doubles as a seat wall near the hottub. A small lawn was strategically placed over the septic tank in case of future removal or repair ad the piping passes under the thinnest part of the walkway. The leech field is in the farthest corner of the yard where a california native meadow was planted to feed o the drainage.

  • ParkerThe Greenberg property sits on a corner In Davis California. Davis has very strict rules about wall and shrub size in front yards. The Parkers have very limited backyard space but wanted to create a patio and hang out area near the pool. Their current yard was very overgrown and unmanageable and little usable space for themselves.

We kept within the city of Daviss guideline sby designing a 3 wall in the front yard and an 8 trellis just behind that. THis created a private garden and patio space in their front yard to enjoy near the pool without feeling like anyone from the street could look in. I designed overlaid wood on the cement stoop and the back patio to add a warmer more welcoming atmosphere. Also we went with a plant palette that was clean and manageable but also complimented the beauty of the surrounding materials.
