Max NeubürgerDuring my studies at Folkwang University in Essen, Germany I tried to gather experience in product design skills. I am proficient of digital and analog sketching, CAD, prototyping and modelmaking in combination with rapid prototyping technologies as well as interface design, experience design and photography. I also have experience with web-design technologies and Arduino / Processing.

While my exchange semester at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio I also got to know another design culture and approach to design.

For me as an industrial designer the influence of a product on it’s user and vice versa is the most important part of design. Every detail in material, form, interface or gesture shapes the way users react to it and interact with it. I try to emphasise those details to create meaningful prodcuts.

I am motivated to break fresh ground and to develop innovative ideas and products.

Seafaring bears a lot of dangers for both, professionals on their heavy cargo and cruise ships and for those sailing the oceans for fun and the will of exploring. Skippers of yachts are as much responsible for the people aboard as the captain of a cruise ship, even though the typical cruise ship tourist might be a lot less experienced than someone riding heavy storms on the atlantic.

In case of an emergency those in responsibility have to care for the safety, so everyone could leave a wrecked ship. This demands close collaboration of the ships crew and the professional rescuers, which are coordinated by the respective national “Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre” (MRCC).

The diversity of possible emergency scenarios requires a variety of specific tools and technology. My aim for this bachelor thesis project was to provide a product, which would provide support to people who got in distress situations.

Sea RescueIn case of an emergency the last thing those responsible will prompt is to abandon a (sinking) ship. There is a statement in the nautical scene which says that the safest rescue boat is the ship itself.

Even though it is recommended to stay as long as possible on a wrecked ship, there are situations, where those affected have no other choice than entering a rescue boat or life raft. It can take several days to rescue someone adrift, therefor shipwrecked people go through a lot of struggles, fear and also physical pain.

Ressources like drinking water and food are highly rationed, as well as no one can really say in advance how long it will take a squad of professional rescuers to find and recover the people adrift.

cURRENT EVENTSThe average of the “Costa Concordia” was one current event, which led me to this topic. The cruise ship ran aground on January 13th 2012 right before Giglio, a small Italian island. 32 people died during that accident.

Another series of very relevant incidents were the attempts of North African immigrants to cross the Mediterranean and land on Lampedusa, another Italian island. Since the early 2000s this is a popular route for people smugglers.

During the autumn of 2013 a lot of immigrants died, when they tried this route on overloaded ships.

Since the number of victiums and accidents dramatically increased over the past decade, sea rescue is a very actual topic.

One can assume that the future brings more risks to shipping, because storms and bad weather will increase as well as the whole industry. Sectors like fishing, cargo and cruise lines are well expanding.

When a yachtsman has no other choice than entering his life raft and abandon his ship, like described in the scenario before, there are many uncertainties and dangers ahead.

Can I withstand the marine forces?

Does anybody get a signal of my EPIRB?

Am I able to distill enough water and catch some fish to survive?

To the left you can see some solutions to the key resources while adrift, but there is no answer on how to recharge the small battery-pack of the EPIRB (remember, it only lasts for about 65 hours).

The target of the following concepts is to fill in this gap.

ENERGY FROM WAVES:

The OWC-PrincipleOWC stands for “Oscillating Water Column”. This principle is implemented into japanese open-sea-buoys since the 1980s.

An OWC-buoy consists of two tubes stacked on each other.The inner tube reaches down to the restful layers of water and therefor lies in a consistent position. The outer tube floats directly on the waves and moves up and down on the inner tube.

While moving down ( + ) on a wave, the contained air gets compressed inside the outer tube and pushed outwards. While moving up ( ), the tubes are decompressing and air is sucked into the outer Tube.

In both directions the airflow passes a Wells-Turbine. This turbine can generate power from both directions of airflow.

The relatively young “Sanaa-Cube” in Essen, Germany has experienced a turbulent history so far. The building, placed on Essen’s Unesco World Heritage “Zollverein”, was originally constructed for the Zollverein School of Management and Design by famous japanese Architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, known as “Sanaa”.

After liquidation of the Zollverein School the building was mostly used for exhibitions until the Folkwang University started using it in early 2010.

Since the first occupation, the building never got furnished for university purposes excluding the auditorium on ground level. Since the building is used in many different ways there never was a real need for that - until the first students of the University’s graduate program “Folkwang Heterotopia” wanted to start their studies in fall 2013.

This workshop was meant to create a first impression of study-life in the chilled and silent atmosphere of washed concrete. Supported with iconic plywood sheets from “Doka” students from three different universities started to occupy the cube during this two-weeks experiment.

Furniture WorkshopFOR ThE FOLkWANG UNIVERSITy GRADUATE PROGRAm “FOLkWANG hETEROTOPIA”

This project was a short, two-week workshop in late summer 2013. The workshop was lead by professors and lecturers from three universities: Folkwang University, University of Art and Design Halle and University of Stuttgart. The participating students also came from those three universities.

The goal was to create furniture (mostly from plywood sheets from german manufacturer “doka”) for the Sanna-building on the World Heritage Areal of Zollverein.

The current furniture mostly consists of greyish design classics such as Eames Plastic Side Chairs. This goes tone-on-tone with the washed concrete of the building.

Since the “doka”-sheets are all-yellow the created furniture sets a high contrast inside the building. Most of the furniture is used until now.

As a part of the project most of us slept at least one night inside the building.

“Reinlauschen” (which is a german artificial word and can be translated with “Sneak-a-Peak”) is an app for party-people to find the hottest location to party in town. It automatically receives snippets from clubs, bars and discos in a radius of three kilometres. The user or, more suitable, the group of users, can then toggle between those snippets and decide for the one they like most. Not until then they will be told where this snippet comes from, and where they have to go.

Those snippets are composed of still images and the surrounding sound, captured by the community via the companion-app “Rausrauschen” (also a german artificial word, best translated with “Swoosh-it-Out”).

This project also incorporates a concept for a cell phone case for party-people, which turns the smartphone into a whole other device to be more like a party-recorder rather than a communicator.

Friday Night OutThe timeline above shows an exemplary party-night from our experience as students, so we know what we’re talking about. All this typically starts out with some text messages in the afternoon “Hey, what’s up tonight? Any neat party to join?”. Later, everybody meets up at someones apartment, brings a bunch of beers, music is playing and everybody is happy.

Now, if there’s not a special event like birthday-parties or such thing, the discussion about the best party-spot comes up. At the end of some wordy arguments everyone agrees to go to the usual bar / club.

Chances are about 50% that the deejay has one of his brilliant nights, you meet other awesome people and have an awesome party. For the other 50%... well, probably everybody went through this at least once.

This does not have to happen!WE WANT YOU TO HAVE AN AWESOME NIGHT WITH YOUR FRIENDS. ALL THE TIME. PERIOD.

GOING TO THE CLUB...

Backdoor listeningWhile researching for this project and floating through our hometowns nightlife, we wanted to get the right impression of a club before we enter it.

Naturally we went to the backdoor, if possible, to get a glimpse of the atmosphere and music inside.

This was the initial spark for our concept app “Reinlauschen” which is a german artificial word and can be translated with “Sneak A Peak”.

The app is for party-people who can’t decide where to go. Especially in groups, there are always discussions about the best location to go. “Reinlauschen” helps finding the right spot by playing live-snippets of clubs around.

How it worksThe map on the right shows the actual scenario we worked in - our hometown Essen in Germany.

The pink dots locate people around the city at several clubs and bars. The green dot marks the location of one user or a group of users searching for the right place to party.

The app “Reinlauschen” (“Sneak-a-peak”) scans all potential spots (where snippets are available) in a 3-km-radius around the users location and lists them without showing the name or actual position of the club, because locals would immediately know which one it is. For a better feeling of the locations the user needs an unbiased, audio-visual impression.

CONTENT IN TERMS OF SNIPPETS IS PROVIDED BY THE COMMUNITY WITH THE COMPANION-APP “RAUSRAUSCHEN”.

Users who are already at a specific location can record a snippet consisting of sound and stop-motion-photography, as well as the current GPS-location with “Rausrauschen” (best translated with “Swoosh-it-Out”).

Data is then send to a server and processed into a video file. The GPS-location will be compared to known club-locations, to figure out the club’s or bar’s name. This information will be deposited on the server and linked to the snippet.

THE SERVER THEN PROVIDES THE MOST ACTUAL SNIPPET OF EVERY LOCATION TO THE USERS OF “REINLAUSCHEN”.

The users simply swipe through those snippets and then decide which they liked most. After that decision the server tells the locations name and provides navigation-support, if needed:

If a location appeals to the users, they can simply select it, by tapping it.

There is also a button to start “Rausrauschen”, where users are able to upload snippets of parties by themselves.

After loading “Rausrauschen” , the users are able to provide their own 30-second-snippets, by simply tapping the “SWOOSH-IT-OUT”-button, or the Home Button of the Phone.

This helps other party-people, searching for the best location.

As a team of industrial designers, we wanted to take the project one step further.

We wanted to turn the smartphone into a party-recorder, only able to be used for “Rausrauschen”, the companion-app to create snippets of parties. Every distraction is unwanted.

“Keen” is a well known outdoor shoe brand throughout the U.S. We started the research in groups. The goal was to evaluate possible future markets for the brand beside the already served hikers and sailors. The brand also expanded into leisure clothes and bags which fits the brand philosophy “Create - Play - Care”.

We figured, that every product should be ruled by this philosophy. The future of the brand therefor lies in the leisure activity branch. To be more precise we focused on the expansion of those excited about aquatic activities like canoeing, scuba diving and kite-surfing.

Since the brand already produces soft goods, my goal was to create something useful for the target group, that would really enhance to the aquatic enthusiasts experience.

The result is a transportation system consisting of an unique roof rack and a bag which is designed for easy access and flexibility during the users stay at the waterfront.

CONCEPT 2: SEMI-OPEN BAGThe concept shown above provides a new opening mechanism to typical luggage.

This semi-open bag can be opened easily for fast access and stays open, if wanted so, due to the velcro straps, which can be attached to the sides.

If the velcro straps are released the bag closes by itself, due to the tense metal rods at the opening.

CONCEPT 3: ROOF RACKThis concept for a car roof rack allows the user a much better accessibility than existing products.

The cargo box or baggage trolley is mounted on a movable rail, which can be pulled backwards and then folds onto the rear of the car. This part of the rack is cushioned, of course, to prevent from scratching the car.

The luggage can then be pulled easily from the rack.

CONCEPT 1: COMPRESSABLE COOLERThe concept to the right shows a portable cooler, which can be easily compressed to fit the size needed or for transportation. This prevents ice packs from wasting too much energy.

To adjust the size, the user just has to pull the strap or release its buckle. The sidewalls expand themselves.

Blood Pressure MonitorWe all know a blood pressure monitor and are not happy about the idea of using one daily. Especially low-cost products are not easy to use and, if it comes down to the correct utilization of a bpm, even the manual often can’t really help.

We researched the problems and difficulties around low-cost bpm’s (around 20 US-$) in groups and started with redesigns from there. Estimated costs of the final concept should be in the same price-range of the products we started to redesign.

One of the biggest issues was to use the pump. The repeated squeezing of the pump is very tiring and debilitating - especially for older people. The second problem is to easily apply the cuff to the users arm (this won’t be an issue if the user has assistance). Also the stethoscope requires a two-handed usage so one can’t pump and relocate the stethoscope in an easy way.

Going from there, I redesigned all parts of a typical bpm and sometimes merged them together, to provide an understandable, easy-to-use-product - and therefor a less stressful experience.

hANDLINGHandling of a standard analog blood pressure monitor is extremely difficult for someone without help. As the images on the left show, you need a lot of power to set up the cuff and to use the handpump. It may also be difficult to place the stethoscope on the artery while fastening the cuff. One-handed management of the valve, while holding the gauge in the other hand is also not as accurate as desired.

This project started out as a cooperational project between Northumbria University in Newcastle (GB), Hong-ik University (Korea) and The Ohio Stat University, where I participated as an exchange student.

We gathered in teams of three and had a partner-team from one other university. Every team assigned a design brief about some specific, local festival to its partner-team and gets one in return.

The “Jeongwol Daeboreum Deulbul” fire festival was presented to my team with the task of designing a product to connect the festivals visitors and also anticipates the festivals history.

Our partner group in Korea assigned us to the Jeongwol Daeboreum Deulbul Fire Festival, which is an old, traditional festival and a national holiday nowadays.

The Jeongwol Daeboreum Deulbul Fire Festival has kept alive the culture of Jeju cattle breeding, bringing it up to date for the current lifestyle. Farmers needed to have pastures with good quality grass in the mid-mountain area to feed cows.

Daeboreum means “great full moon.”

Now it is a Korean holiday where people celebrate the first full moon of the lunar Korean calendar.

We wanted to build something, which connects the people at the festival and gives them an opportunity to share their prayers for the next year.

1 Different approaches led to a design, where the visitor gets a colorful wristband, when entering the festival.

2 They can write prayers on small sheets of paper and attach them to the wristband.

3 Finally, multiple wristbands together can be used to build a small “moon ball”.

The powerdrill model is the result of a CAD workshop for detailed and precise CAD modeling.

The design is based on an original Bosch design and while sketching out the orthographic templates I made some design tweaks. All modeling is done in SolidWorks with a mixed top-down/bottom-up modeling strategy.

The final model should provide a detailed outer shell for the product components, which aren’t modeled in detail. All buttons are build as correctly moving Parts.

The results are high-end renderings, an animation of the exploded view and a spec sheet with detailed information on every part of the model.

“Chronos” is a product designed for one specific user. It is a working prototype to improve the user’s habits. It had been tested for two weeks in the users environment to evaluate it’s benefit.

The study volunteer Jonas wanted to concentrate more on university and learning instead of spending his time on leisure things. The goal was to create a product which initially reflects his daily habits and then nudges and reminds him of his goal to be more productive.

“Chronos” consists of two lamps, which are placed in different rooms. Their shades reflect the time spent in each room. The displayed time can be used up and refilled by using the other lamp. The utilization purpose of the two rooms was already assigned by Jonas - one room for work and one for leisure.

Transformational ProductsUsually technology is used to take off work from ourselves. it appears logical to us, that every gadget and device should help us master the everyday life. Such helpers support us by completing annoying tasks or give us a feeling of safety and control.

We familiarize with that help and adapt our behaviour to such things. We get used to not washing up the dishes or that everyone is constantly available through phone and e-mail.

Future development calls for a responsible dealing with everything we use. This starts with ressources and doesn’t just end with manpower.

This project is based on research by Folkwang University and is aimed to create products, which help the user reflect his or her behavior instead of taking over tasks to simplify the users life.

Transformational Products aren’t neutral, they have a distinct “opinion” about a certain issue and interfere with daily behavior. However they are not meant to have an artificial intelligence, their acting happens in a naive way.

Jonas has issues focussing on learning. Too many things can distract him from getting university work done. Basically he uses two rooms for different purposes: learning is done in the sleeping room on the upper floor. Whereas Jonas spends his freetime downstairs. Getting back to the “learning-area” is a difficult task for him, when entertainment is all around in his living room.

Working with a voluntary proband to find out his or her weak points when managing activities like learning, watering plants or eating less sweets was one of the main goals.

A transformational product was then custom-build to serve this purpose and helping the user getting it managed.

During a 10-day trial the user filled out a diary about the interaction with the transformational product. The results were evaluated via excel.

ConceptWhen Jonas is coming home from school he tends to prepare something to eat and then goes straight into his living room to watch a TV show or something other. This is where the concept “chronos” interrupts.

It consists of two lamps which interact with each other. They share a time-pool of 4 hours. When one lamp is used it transfers it’s “time-pool” to the other one. This shared time-pool is made visible by moving the lampshades up for refilling the time and down for using it.

When Jonas is going to his living room he first wants to turn on the lamp.

This isn’t possible at the time, because he has “used” the time-pool of his living-room-lamp the day before.

2 This leads him to his learing- and sleeping-room which is upstairs. The lamp there has a full time-pool and can be used. Once he is in the right room, associated with learning, he tends to get his university work done.

3 While the lamp upstairs is turned on, it slowly transfers its time-pool to the one downstairs.

4 When done with learning he can use the refilled lamp in his living room for leisure time. While this lamp is running it slowly consumes its time-pool and transfers it back upstais.

5 There is a way to override this setting. When both lamps are turned on, they don’t consume each others time-pool. This is neccessary to allow more freetime in the living room for example. It still requires Jonas to go upstairs and turn on the study-lamp, which reminds him to get stuff done.

Ironing clothes is one of the most annoying tasks when doing the household, especially young people tend to think so.

From my own experience and those of others at my age I could tell, that such tasks will be completed more swiftly and entertaining when done collaboratively.

This is why “twiron” encourages social ironing. “Twiron” comes out-of-the-box with two irons on a shared iron station. The irons are induction-heated and therefor completely cordless. The product encourages it’s users to motivate each other to get their housework done.

Early ironing practicesAND TODAy’S TyPE OF USAGE

As the first approach to the topic ‘Straightening Textiles’ we, as a class, build an historic overview of devices and practices, people used then and now to get their clothes smooth. A part of our historic timeline is pictured above.

There are only a few historic events, which really lead to how we iron today. Chinese people already started straightening their silk textiles at the time of the Han Dynasty (around 200 BC).

The first major improvement came from European people in the late Gothic era: they started to pre-heat iron blocks on the oven, or filled hollow flatirons with hot coals. This process got upgraded several times, to iron in a cleaner and more efficient way. Also the iconic triangular shape got developed. The first electric irons appeared in the late 19th century.

Electric flatirons first became popular, when electricity rates dropped in the early 20th century.

200 Bc 18Th cENTURyA major upgrade was a special oven just for flatirons, where several iron plates could be pre-heated and used with an exchangeable handle.

19Th cENTURyPans were filled with glowing coals and sand. Two to three people then had to hold the textile tight in order to smoothen it.

TODAySince the 1960s steam irons gained currency in western households. With the economic rise after World War II everyone wanted to buy a piece of technology and personal wealth. Since this time steam irons only got more delivery contents and minor upgrades (they became steam iron stations) compared to the evolving world of technology around.

It is time to rethink the activity and process of ironing!

67Exploring The Field

USER INTERVIEWS & SELF-ExPERIENcEI, personally, don’t feel very motivated about ironing and so I avoid doing it, whenever I can. A lot of my friends are having the same experience, which led to the question “What is wrong with this process? Couldn’t it be more attractive especially to young people?”.

Therefor I did a survey with friends and fellow students, stuck with the same feeling about ironing. I asked about their habits, why they do it, or why they don’t. What they like about it and what they don’t.

Results showed, that young people percieve the process as something stale and boringly traditional. It lacked of entertainment and interaction. Also, especially women don’t like the link between steam irons and the stereotype of a housewife

For further exploration of the topic and especially our own understanding of technology and process the class started a self-experience course.

Concept: Social IroningI also started looking for the habbits my roommates and me cultivated for doing annoying household tasks. As it appeared before in the user interviews, we wanted to make things fun. Thats why we almost always did the dishwashing collectively, for example. This lead me to the concept of “social ironing”.

DesignThe main goal was to reflect the act of sharing a task in the design. To underline that, both irons share an ironing station, where the irons are induction-heated, like the users share their duty. If one brings out the station it will also instantly remind him to ask for a partner.

The station is point-symmetric designed, to give equal operability to both users who most likely share a table to get their apparel straight.

Since the irons are induction-heated all control elements are provided by the station. Also the non-visible electric parts (converters, transformer, control unit, etc.) are placed in the station. The iron itself is completely free from electric parts and therefor, the whole system is easy to repair, if needed.

The design of the irons has two purposes: The shape is modelled on top of the iconic triangular form with a difference to the back part. The sharp angle there also enables the user to reach into difficult regions, like a shirt’s button border, more easily. The other purpose is that both irons complete each other formally, which also underlines the act of sharing.

The concept goes without steam, to provide a gap-free sole, which simplifies the induction process. The user is recommended to use a water spray bottle to get a smiliar effect.
