According to the provisional Census results there are 820 people in Maungaturoto. That’s 88 more than the 732 who lived here in 2001, which sounds good until you find out that 822 people lived in our town on Census night in 1996. It’s obvious that over the past decade we’ve lost two people? It can’t be you and me, because we’re here? So where are they? Statistics New Zealand emphasise on their website that the figures are provisional and “should be used with caution”. I’m more than cautious! I’m scared. Who’s taking our people and where are they putting them? Perhaps Maungaturoto was populated by Census resisters in 2001 when our numbers dropped to 732 and, since then, they’ve seen the error of their ways and ‘fessed up to existing in 2006? Or maybe when the official rather than provisional numbers are revealed we’ll learn that a vague Census worker forgot to hand in a bunch of forms. When the residents of our gleaming new subdivisions are counted, perhaps our population will soar into the nine hundreds? In any event, if there are 820 people in Maungaturoto and a bunch of those are children, then almost a quarter of the adults got together recently to celebrate the brightest and best in our town. Yes, the winners of the Maungaturoto Community/Business Awards 2006 were announced at a glamourous Gala Dinner on Saturday, May 24. Hearty congratulations go to Overall Supreme Award Winner Eileen Parsons who was also lauded as Maungaturoto’s Community Worker of the Year. There are few community organisations that Eileen isn’t involved with. She works tirelessly and quietly behind the scenes, so it was great to see her emerge and be celebrated. Also congratulations to the winners of the other Awards and to all the finalists. (You’ll find more on the Awards inside.) Congratulations also to the Maungaturoto Business Association for coming up with the idea and working so hard to make the Awards a success. These Awards are a timely reminder of the great people and businesses we have in our town and they show that community spirit is alive and well in Maungaturoto! Well done everyone. Rae

Non-profit organisations are urged to send in articles to
promote themselves, especially those that have paid up for
the year and are entitled to a free quarter page space. We
would love to hear from you! If you have an item you want
mentioned in the “Matters” you can either contact me at
the address below or drop it into the RED BOX in the win-
dow at Tony’s Stationers in Hurndall Street. If it is an ad-
vert the fees are printed on the top right of Page 1.
Please note we do not usually accept photographs as they do not copy very well and the effect is often lost; and we do not accept “Letters to the Editor” as we do not have enough room to print

Plunket News
“Whanau awhina ~ Caring for young families”
This is the motto of Plunket, a Well-Child Health organisation that has been running now for 99 years. We will be celebrating our centennial next year, with the national conference being held in Dunedin. In the next time being, all Plunket groups are being asked to celebrate a big long birthday up until next year. In Maungaturoto, we will be joining the rest of the Lower Northland branch in a 25th anniversary celebration. We are planning a special dinner to be held in or around October and we hope your readers will help spread the word. This will be combined with our annual general meeting.
In Maungaturoto we have a dedicated group of women involved in the committee. They are: May Seager, president; Karen Flannagan, vice presi-dent; Jacqui Donald, secretary; Jenny Reid, treas-urer; Kathleen Rich (out going) and Katrina McGill (in-coming) car seat co-ordinator; Linda Cow-bourne, safety co-ordinator; Nicky Le Mesurier, Vicky Kenworthy-Thompson, committee members. Our committee meets once a month on the 3rd Wednesday starting at 7:30pm at the Plunket Rooms on Hurndall St. Anyone is welcome to attend. May Seager

REST HOME NEWS Hello again from the Resthome. We have been staying inside more this month as the weather is a bit wet and cold for much activity outdoors. Before the weather deteriorated, three residents went along to watch the local Tai Chi classes and this has encouraged us to start some exercise classes here so watch out Maungaturoto, next year we might even try a walking program. Recently The Friends of the Resthome donated some casserole dishes and kitchen equipment. We all would like to say a Big Thank you to this small group of local ladies who work so hard to support the Resthome and show us such generosity. During the weekends the lady in charge will be Wendy, she has worked at the Resthome for nearly 4 years since moving to the Maungaturoto area 7 years ago and looks after the day to day running of the kitchen during the week. Wendy’s role here is senior caregiver but also assists with menus and rosters so if you want to contact anybody during the weekends for enquiries or any information feel free to phone her here at the Resthome Ph: 431 8696. Well, goodbye again for another month, keep safe and warm from everyone here at the Resthome.

THE PIG PICTURE
by
Jennifer Boneham
I s'pose you could say we was just trotting along. Young and stupid, footloose and free. Brad and I had, sort-of , hooked up together and we was lookin' to see what the world had to offer. I remember the day we chanced on the collection of sheds in the clearing, Brad fair squealed with
excitement "Hey Jen, you know what we got here?" Well I'd not seen the like of it. "Sure as my name's Brad Pig, that thar is what they call CEE-VEE-LIZ-ATION! Jennifer honey,
we got it made." I wasn't so sure, it looked kinda unnatural to me, but there was no holding Brad back, and where
Brad goes, I gotta follow. Now I cain't say as we struck it rich, but we was made welcome and it was a good livin'. But ain't
it ever the case that Pigs and People never are satisfied. And Brad and I, we wanted it all. We lived the high life fa time. We came and went as we pleased, had our own private wallow and a dry shed. It was summertime and the livin' was easy. But we got greedy, started livin' beyond our means. I was all for goin' back to the simple life, but Brad wouldn't have it. "Hell Jennifer I ain't gonna spend all my time nose down and ass up just for a few lousy fern
roots? There's easier ways than that to get ahead!" Course Brad was none too scrupulous 'bout how he made a livin'. Always throwing his weight around, he weren't above stealin' a possum
from the dog, and sure as eggs is eggs and chickens is cowards we had ours fresh scrambled. It became harder and harder to keep our noses clean as word got around.
I tried to warn Brad "Thar ain't no such thing as a free lunch," I snorted, "and we's been havin' a whole heap of free lunches lately."
But there weren't no arguing with Brad, he was as pig-headed as they come. "Relax Jen." he'd grunted in his arrogance, "Don't ya realize, we're in good with the Man, we're flavour of the month,
so let's just ride this ol' gravy train, go with the flow and enjoy." I think it was Brad who didn't realize. Somehow I knew that sooner or later there'd come a reckoning.
Sure-nuff, one fine morning, commin' on Autumn we gets woke up early. It could mean only one thing. FOOD. Brad was in a good mood. "You can call me a pig, you can call me a boar," he joked "but don't
call me late for breakfast." There was the man, and some others too, putting out some nice juicy apples. I hoed in right quick seein' as Brad always tries to take more'n his fair share. Then, Bang! Brad just plumb falls down.
They'd shot him, right between the tank and the shed. Now Brad wouldn't have expected me to stop eatin' simply 'cause he was dead an' all. And you knows I hates waste so I had Brads breakfast as well. After all, I am a pig and Brad wouldn't be needin' it but it's a consolation knowin' he died doin' what he enjoyed most. EATIN'. But it sure
makes you think don't it? Now I've put all that behind me and I guess you could say I'm comfortable. In fact I'm happy as a
pig in civilization. Ya see, I'm still in good with the 'man' and now that Brad's gone I'm getting double everything, but I don't s'pose it pays to get too complacent.
Well I'll be seein' y'all. I's got to go now 'cause here comes the man with food. And I wonder what that long, smooth metal thing is that he's carryin'...

Maungaturoto Playcentre THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Our Mystery Auction held on June 9th at the Maungaturoto Country Club was a great success, raising over $2,000 for our Playcentre. We would like to thank everyone who purchased tickets, donated prizes, bid on prizes and generally lent to the fun atmosphere of the evening. Although the numbers attending did not reflect the generosity of those that did make the evening very successful, we are still grateful to everyone who contributed. Also thanks to all those who helped to put it all together particularly to Joy Robinson, our co-ordinator who did a fantastic job!
Many thanks to our out going President, Brenda Perrett who has held this position for two years now. With Brenda getting busier with work-life and wanting to spend a bit more quality time with her youngest before she goes to school, it was time for her to pass the reins to someone else. Thank you Brenda for the time, energy and effort you have put into the Playcentre for the past six years, since Joseph started. Thank you also to Julie Underwood who has been our mailing Secretary and has also been at Playcentre for six years with her two children. Both Brenda and Julie have worked very hard and have fulfilled lots of jobs in Playcentre doing fundraising, organizing the phone tree, cultural liai-son, Northland Playcentre Association Representative….the list goes on. We wish you both all the best, as you wind down your Playcentre activities and move onto other things.
Course 3 Assistance - We have found a person who is willing to help us access funding for our Wednesday sessions, by attending and fulfilling that requirement. Thanks to Bryce Thomas’ cousin who will be starting with us in Term 3, even though she no longer has children attending Playcentre. She has offered to attend until our trainees, May Seager and Christine Thomas, have completed their Course 3.
Farewell - To Rose and Darren Ogilvy, whose family has moved to Port Albert. Both Caleb and Aroha spent many happy years playing and making friends at Maungaturoto Playcentre, as did Rose. She also put many hours into our centre and on the Committee. We wish them all the best in their move.
Tables - Thank you to Cherie and Wayne Linton for providing the centre with wonderful New tables, low enough for the children to sit at and eat their Kai. Ka pai!
Office Holders Thanks to the following people who have stepped up to take on new Responsibilities for our centre. The coaching with Jessie Van Kekem from WYNRS, Auckland on Friday 19th May was awesome with many children and adults taking advantage of this opportunity. We would once again like to thank all our sponsors who helped make this possible – Three Furlongs Hotel for their very generous donation, Paparoa Store, Kaiwaka Motorcycles, First National Real Estate, Shamrock Auto Care and Graham Hawkes Accountants, Kaiwaka for their generous donations towards the coaching sessions. Also thanks to Kaiwaka Sports Assn for their continued support to our club.
Rep Selection – Two ROSA rep trials have been completed for 8-10 year olds, and the following Kaipara children were successful: 9th Grade – Terry Baldwin and Duncan Northcott, 10th Grade – Daniel Rich and Jamish Kant, 11th Grade – Ryan Bradley. Well done to you all!! These children will undergo coaching and tournaments with United Soccer in Whangarei.
