Ola mi amigos, Overall march has been a very exciting month for me. Placing 3rd in the Freestyle and 15th in Slalom at the PWA Grandslam event in Mui Ne Beach, Vietnam, was awesome.

I felt good to do slalom again as the day before the slalom competition started I had some runs on the TR7 5.9 and I really had good board speed and and the race sails are so easy and fast that this motivated me to be more confident to do slalom.

Having two overearly made a big impact on my results, but I’m just surprised on how good I was sailing, since I haven’t competed in slalom for more than 2 years. Could it been the new TR7 sails??? And these amazing Isonic Starboard board.?? I really believe so :).

Racing was fun. I really enjoy it, having couple of the grumpies been mad at me, it’s so funny on how mad these grumpies can be when they lose places because I just squeeze and pass ahead of them.

There was a heat I remember where I was in sixth position going to the last jibe and Cyril was in 5th, just at the last jibe going to the finish line I had this perfect jibe upwind of cyril and on the reach i was fast enough to get ahead of him to finish 5th and to advance to the semi-final. I was jumping while racing and still I was ahead, I was just enjoying racing and this is just an idea on how comfortable I felt with my new TR7 sails.

Very exciting month for Taty FransGetting back on Bonaire the wind wasn’t so good. But it was okay cause I needed to take a few days off after 10 days of competition and a long flight back to Bonaire. After 5 days being back home the wind start blowing again just enough for my 4.8 Loco, and it was good to sail back on Bonaire together with my brother, Tonky.

At this moment on Bonaire we have bunch of freestyle windsurfers from Europe on the island getting to improve their freestyle. Most of them are really motivated and are sailing already better than when they arrived. Team Mauisail rider Xenia Kesler is also on Boniare and she did really improve ... BRAVOO :).

As for me I flew to Curacao on the 26th stay one night. 27th I flew to miami then L.A.. Stayed one night in L.A. and arrived in Maui the 28th together with Bjorn Saragoza. Barry picked me up, we had a little talk while we drove to the loft get my new sails and was sailing and testing the new 2012 Loco 4.4 that afternoon.

Wind is good but no wave.Adios amigos

We were in Vietnam this year for the start of March for the PWA event, right after the freestyle discipline finished we started registering for the Mui Ne world cup Slalom, the first event of the season.

After a light wind race on the first day we remained on hold almost for the rest of the competition until the very last day when the trade winds returned. The new TR-7 race sails were magnificent and in the 3rd race of the event I had a great battle with Antoine in the final on the 7.6 for 1st place. I was almost able to hold him off to take victory to finally get passed by the world champion arriving in 2nd place that race. Even though the wind dropped for the last race of the day, I finished in 4th place on the 7.0. Arriving at the 1st mark together with my trainings partner Finian, it was when I realized our training is paying off now, The equipment I am using is worthy of winning races; so now it comes down to being consistent. Also I would like to get heavier as I think this makes the little difference between the top guys. Overall I finished 9th only just 2 points from 5th, because I couldn’t discard the 16th place of the first day.

Taty was also having some unbelievable good races showing great speed on the TR7. It will be interesting to see what he can do at his next slalom event in Aruba. As usual he did really well in the Freestyle in the difficult and bumpy conditions and will do well in Austria.

From Vietnam I flew straight back to Maui and after some time free wheeling Bogo arrived for the photo shooting. We had a blast working together and we must have gotten some pretty nice photos of the new sails which are really awesome.

The new Legend got a shorter luff length and a more boxy outline, its a much more compact feel and first sessions were outstanding, didnt even have to get used to the sail and it felt really natural. I guess the new technology trickling down from the TR-7 is starting to benefit the other sails too.

In slalom I have been using the SRS 55% as my training masts, to save my best masts for important competitions only. I really like the performance though and would recommend anyone using the TR7 to have a go on it. They are a bit heavy but on the flipside you could probably stick it to the reef and it wouldn’t even break.

When will the wind finally slow down? so we can get on the bigger sails!

Aloha from Maui, Peter Volwater H-24

March on Maui is pretty badass!

As a kid, my favorite month of the year used to be June. School was out and Lake Isabella was in prime season for windsurfing, it couldn’t be better. However, this last month, wow, I think it’s safe to say March on Maui is pretty badass! If there really is a ‘wind switch,’ someone turned it on March 1st and forgot to turn it off for the rest of the month! Photoshoot season began, and the north shore was once again packed with the world’s best with helicopters and cameras everywhere.

It was great to have the whole MauiSails crew in town for the month, we had a blast sailing practically everyday. We wavesailed Legends, Ghosts XTs, and Globals at Hookipa and Kuau, had sick bump&jump conditions with head-high waves at Sprecks with the Switches’, and freestyle sessions at Camp 1 with Taty on the Locos while Peter was hauling ass at Kanaha on the TR-7s.

As April hits, we are starting to look forward to our season back on the mainland. My friends that are already back in the Gorge have scored some awesome days out East already, and I can’t wait to get back! We’re also really looking forward to the upcoming American Wave Tour, starting with Waddell May 5th, it’s been a long time since there’s been a wave series held on the mainland, and we’re stoked to have one back!

It has been a busy month at MauiSails as our whole team has been here training and doing photoshoots. The loft always gets the most traffic this time of year as all the riders are excited to get a chance to try the new samples and give their feedback. Bogo has been on island, valiantly putting himself in harms way trying to take water shots at super busy Hookipa. Though I generally prefer more reclusive wave spots, It was fun to get out sailing with the whole team and join in the Hookipa circus in an effort to crack some lips for the camera. We even had one exceptional morning with a big and rough WNW swell where Peter, Phil, Ferdinando, Robert and I were the only ones out for the first hour or two. It was a MauiSails monopoly of Hookipa!

We’ve been hard at work on the wave and freestyle sail designs and while it’s still too early to reveal the details, the results will be something to get excited about.

March has been awesome for wind and waves on Maui. Lots and lots of wind and some great surf days for testing the new Ghost and Legends. It’s been easy to see that the new outlines in the wave sails have also visibly ramped up the performance in terms of speed and upwind ability. One of the things we stress in our development is the importance of having efficient range of use and most especially, the stuff you need to be faster than most, get to the peak first, and do it more than others. This serves wave competitors (because you only have some minutes to score) but everyone benefits because you do less sailing to catch more waves, and you do it in a comfortable planing stance. I know it’s world news now, and understand the issues we faced here were nothing like those in Japan, but we had our own tsunami experience as well. My son called me around 9:00 p.m. to tell me to check out the warnings, and I dropped dinner with friends and made a quick run home to load up some food and ice, grab the dog, and then made the drive to Lahaina. All along the way gas stations were lined up with cars filling up, and the stores were all emptying the shelves fast. Some friends met me at the harbor and we shuttled cars to higher elevation, then Rosie and I got aboard Cornelia around 11:30. The town of Lahaina was emptying and the police were getting ready to close the road. The waves were predicted to hit around 3:30 a.m.. We left the slip about 2:30 and as this was the first time I had to do anything like that alone, I was glad the harbor was already almost empty. In fact, most of the larger cruise boats all had many folks aboard, and were loaded with beer and food and music, the lights were on, and there was a party, far offshore. Being well out to sea and clear of the fleet of around one hundred boats by about 4:30, I shut the motor down and took a cockpit snooze. The dog woke me up just before dawn because a pod of whales was playing around close to the boat. The next day was beautiful, the Coast Guard closed the harbor, so we put up the main (Rosie’s a great crew!), I trimmed it for balance and locked the helm, we held course fine so a nap was in order. Blissful and carefree, feeling guilty about having it so good. By afternoon, the harbor was still closed, so I anchored closer to shore, made a nice dinner, then went to sleep in the cockpit under the stars. Mid-morning the next day we were allowed to re-enter the harbor.

Big wave March... but not the kind we really like

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdS9lnBOhgI to check out our little troubles. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Japan as they struggle with all the issues of the past month. Our agent there, Norio Asano (J-25), lives far south in Omaezaki, but has felt the impact. He responded to my message of support: Hi Barry, Thanks for your consideration. I and my places are okay.

People in east Japan, tend to stay away from the beach recently. I fully understand their thoughts when I see the devastation caused by the earthquake and Tsunami at northern part and east Japan. I am afraid the impact would be affected to the windsurfing market.

I am heading to the west for some promotion (if possible) this weekend. Will keep you updated. Again, I really appreciate the kind words from you.

Regards,Norio We are all so very lucky if we have shelter and food. AlohaBarry Spanier

Almost every March is good on Maui and after a slow February March really turned up the heat and wind. We are so lucky living here, just pick what time of day you want to sail and out the door we go. It was a busy March on Maui, we had Peter, Taty and Bogo here for a few weeks doing photo’s and training. We scored a great day at Hookipa with four Mauisails cruising around for a few hours picking off the best waves.

Spring break holidays got myself and my daughter Madison down to Australia to catch up with Family and do a little road trip. We headed from Sydney to Canberra, our capital city and then down to the great dividing range mountains, scoring a perfect day to hike to the summit of Mount Kosciusko the highest peak in Australia.

Aloha, Phil McGain
