The Mutant our most progressive 4-battens, ultra-low aspect ratio wave sail

How are you all doing? With this report I will try to write/explain the best I can. I really don’t know what to write. :( Here I am in my room in Austria at the 2012 World Cup freestyle event trying to remember what I did in April. Guess I should start by saying :

MAUII finally made it to Maui for the MauiSails and Starboard annual photoshoot. It’s been 12 long days in Maui, even though 12 day passed by like a snap of a finger. The Starboard shooting took long hours and being at the beach the whole day, from 6 A.M. for the SUP boards photo shoot at Ho’okipa then later, at 11 o’clock as the wind kicks in and the sun shined, we started the photo shoot for the freestyle/wave, formula,and Isonic boards, down at Camp One or Kanaha. As for me, being the main rider for the formula board and freestyle/wave board made it more interesting and kind of tiring, but it all will pay off in the end when the new brochure gets out:).

My trip to Maui was really great, because I had the time to talk with Art about the new Locos for 2013 and beyond. I head up to the loft, meet up with Art and explain some interesting ideas. We end up rigging sails, measure the tension and mast curve, leech tension, outhaul, boom height etc. The new Locos will be amazing. Some weeks before I got to Maui, we were e-mailing back and forth about new design and feelings and what I would like to have made different. Getting on Maui, testing 2x Loco 4.4 protos and 2x Loco 5.2 prototype, and finding each with slightly different feeling. BUT...

Testing a new sail is not easy and especially having two sails with slightly different feeling. In the end it will make a difference, so to get the best sail from each of the two Loco prototype sail size I head down to Camp One. We rigged all the prototype sails with the same mast and boom at a perfect setup, and sailed with each sail ten minutes for about 4-5 times. In the end the results were positive and I am happy with the sails I have picked. You guys will be happy with the new locos too.

Maui MonthlyOur Experience, Your Reward .5

MAUI SLALOM SESSION My session with my slalom gear was really great. I had some amazing slalom runs, first with Cyril out at Camp One, and I had pretty much the same speed or at times more then Cyril, with my TR8 5.9 sail size and my Isonic 87.

My second session I went down at Kanaha still on my TR8 5.9 and my Isonic 87, and got intense slalom runs with Dan Ellis, and some other PWA top guys. Still I was impressed with my speed and could really stay ahead.

My third session was the photoshoot for the TR-8 with Micah, Phil and Tammy at Kihei speed beach. You can see these on the Mauisails Facebook wall http://www.facebook.com/MauiSailsHawaii It was super windy and gusty and I was really powered up on my 5.9. I am feeling great on the 5.9 and my speed is good and I am better in strong wind, that’s all I can say, I adore the new TR8. They are great, better than TR-7, better handling in over power conditions and when the wind gets gusty you can still benefit, as the sail keeps the power to get you more speed without losing control. I am really looking forward to the windy conditions in slalom PWA World Ccup so that I can use my 5.5 and 5.9 sails.

As the photoshoot got to the end, I missed my flight to LAX as I thought I was flying on the 12th but realized I had to fly on the 11th just one hour before departure. Man, how stupid of me. so Casey Hauser helped me big time, trying to arrange another flight on the 11th but at a later time. After one hour he got me a flight that was leaving at 4;50pm so I had to rush to Zane Schweitzer’s house, packed up all my windsurf gear and clothing, drove back to the airport, checked in got charged $450 for changing my ticket plus my four windsurf bags. Phew! If I didn’t make the flight on the 11th I would not have made it in time to fly to Italy,

Back on Bonaire I had two days to get prepared. As soon as I arrived, I went to the beach, rigged the 8.4 and 7.6 and tested these sails. I got them a bit tuned, but as I am sailing by myself on Bonaire I felt good but didn’t know if they where at their best. But I stay confident and knew I had good sails... LOVE THE TR-8 7.6. So Italy here I come. Before I left Bonaire I checked the forecast for Italy and it looks light but sailable so I knew that what I have tested on Bonaire was good.

ITALY PWA SLALOM WORLD CUP After the first few days of no wind, it was sure the waiting game. But I never did trust the forecast as I knew one day it will get windy. I was always the first guy on the water. I got on my 8.4 and pumped the hell out, got planing and tested and got used to the 8.4. The sail was feeling good until I have asked Micah for help tuning it better and then I was more happy on how the sail was feeling. Thanks Micah.


The racing went pretty good for me and I got some good board speed on the 117 wide starboard and my TR8 7.6. I was feeling good and I made it with some ease to the next rounds until I had an over early that made me get in the loser final where I ended up third place in the losers final and so finished 11th place on the first PWA slalom event for 2012. There’s more slalom events to go, so I am looking forward to more racing.

AUSTRIA PODOSDORF PWA WORLD CUPThis is one of the events where you can expect anything from light wind freestyle conditions sailing on 6.0 or 5.6 sails with your medium to big freestyle boards, or suddenly the next day you are on your 4.8 or 4.4 sails with your small freestyle board. with the weather being super cold. But this year the weather was warm and windy. Even though it was gusty up and down we still managed to do some heats on the second day of the event and on the third day we finished the single elimination.where I finished SECOND and Gollito in first. If you ask me how I feel about this: My answer is this: I really didn’t expect to be in the top three, because knowing that these guys like Kiri, Steven, Gollito, and all of the top ten were really on it the whole year round focusing only on freestyle, it was a hard to match their skills, but this doesn’t mean that I am lower or not as good as them. I did train in the winter time but I have to focus on slalom and freestyle and to me it’s a lot. But I love my Mauisails... the TR8 are good, my freestyle Loco sails feel great. So if I can put my mind on each discipline when it gets to it I can do good.

Soooooo, just when I am writing this I just got back from the CHIEMSEE town in a session where I finished 5th with the move double funnel diablo, 4th place: Bjorn Saragoza with double one handed funnel3rd place: Kiri Thode with double one handed funnel pirouette2nd place: Gollito Estredo with AIr funnel into Burner1st place: Steven van Broeckhoven with 3 funnel.

Still one more day to go for the end of the AUSTRIA PWA FREESTYLE EVENT. I am SECOND place and I am happy, but the MM report had to go out today for Bogo so I will write an event report and post it soon.

The Mutant

our most progressive 4-battens, ultra-low aspect ratio wave sail

The first couple of weeks of April were spent fine tuning all of my gear in preparation for the first event in Reggio Calabria, Italy. With lots of wind this year in Maui it was hard to get much time in on my bigger TR8 sails. I had lots of good days on my 7.0 and smaller, playing with different masts, different settings and getting fins dialed for my 59 JP slalom board. I also had some more good days doing racing practice with Phil, starts and buoys at Kanaha. But I knew that most of this coming year was going to be spent on bigger sails and boards so I really needed to try and get some water time with my 8.4 and 9.2 TR8’s and my 66 and 78 JP boards. Luckily the last couple of days before leaving for Italy I had perfect conditions to get out on this equipment. And with the help of Phil I was able to get most of this gear finely tuned for Italy.

With Werner still in town I also continued to work on the new shapes for JP. We had some very productive days on the boards and made some very good progress. By the time I left for Italy most of the shapes were done, but we decided to do one more board that would be ready when I got back from Italy to do the final test before the boards were to be sent off.

The 15th finally came and it was time to fly to Italy for the first race of this new and exciting 2012 PWA racing season. Check in went very smoothly in Maui and the flights all the way to Italy were all very comfortable. After so many years

flying and so many miles I have earned quite a few upgrades and was lucky enough to be able to use some on this trip. It makes a huge difference being able to get some good sleep on these long flights, when I arrive in Europe I can adjust to the new time and get back on the water much quicker. And with only a couple of days time in Italy before racing it certainly helped.

ogoI guess nothing could really help with the wind and with debris in the water though. With a great day of sailing the day before the event in Italy the wind went into hiding and it turned into a waiting game in Italy. During the waiting days I spent most of my time making sure all my gear was tuned and ready, stretching and doing some light runs to make sure my body kept moving. Once the wind did finally come it was hard for the race crew to get a good course set due to shifty and gusty winds, deep water and lots of current. Due to all the problems we missed some of the wind but we finally got under way.

My first heat went well but the second heat not so well. I felt great until just before the first mark when I ran into a hidden object in the water ending my first round chances. There were still a few days left though and a good chance to get a couple more rounds in if the wind that was forecasted came. But more and more waiting turned into the last stand on the last day. With only about two hours of daylight left on the last day the wind finally came in but it was to late for anyone that had already lost and was barely enough to finish the one round that was started. In the end a long way to go for not really much reward or learning.


Back to Maui and time to regroup, with only five days till I had to leave for Korea and the next event. Since I didn’t get much water time in Italy it is hard to say to much about my gear preparation so I only did some small tweaks in Maui while trying to recover from the jet lag and have some quality family time before having to leave for Korea. While in Maui I also had to do a few days of the JP photo shoot which was winding down. Werner also had the last proto ready to go so we got to test this and finalize our slalom boards for next season.

I am hoping for better winds in Korea and nothing in the water!!!

April has been a really busy month for me...Micah, Casey, Artur and I were shooting almost everyday for the wave sails with Bogo and had lot of fun with the team. Next when Bogo left Maui I start the quatro photoshoot so it was the first time for me that I was shooting for one month non stop. Beside that my mother, sister, girlfriend and her sister came to discover Maui and the world where i’m living in since many years. Unfortunately I couldn’t see them as much as I wanted to because in the morning I usually had to go to the MauiSails or Quatro office and the afternoon I had to shoot, but they realise that it was my work I didn’t really had the choice. But we were making good diner every night, that was fun and had a good time because it’s not every day that I have four girls for me every night at home. During the photoshoot i tried the new Mutant, Ghost XT and Legend and thos three model are working really good for the wave riding and I’m stocked with it. Today I’m paking my stuff to go back in Guadeloupe but I will stop by in California so when you gonna read this I will be in Santa Cruz for the first event of the Amrican Windsurfinr Tour.

April was another terrific month on Maui with wind and waves nearly everyday. Spring had officially kicked in, and unfortunately that meant my time on Maui was winding down for the season. It’s funny, no matter where you are or how long you stay in a particular spot, I always feel like the last days are so precious, you just want to milk every bit out of each session because you never know if it’ll be the last of your trip, or when you’ll be able to sail that spot again. With the whole team being on the island and a fresh shipment of 2013 sails arriving on the 1st for photoshoots, I knew my last couple weeks on Maui we’re going to be epic!

Though the clouds weren’t always cooperating, the conditions did not disappoint, and we were able get a lot of the new sails on the water during the first couple weeks before I had to leave. I personally got a chance to ride the new Mutant, Global, Legend, Ghost, Loco, and Switch. It’s such an awesome experience to be a part of the photoshoots, and this year I was just blown away with the new sails as we unrolled them at Hookipa. The new sails feel incredible and they look amazing! The new Legends, Locos, and Mutants in particular look BADASS, with fresh new colorways and graphics that set them apart from the pack not just in feel but also look, which some may say is the most important feature of any sail! Needless to say I was pretty stoked on the new gear and am looking forward to the upcoming season!

After a couple long days of cleaning and packing, the time finally came to depart my winter abode and finally make the trek back to Hood River. Bummed about leaving Maui, my feelings of sadness were immediately replaced with joy as I headed east on the 84 out of Portland and into the Gorge area. Welcomed back with un-seasonal 80 degree weather, I was quickly reminded of all the good times Hood has to offer during the summer, and began hoping for the conditions to line up to get on the water. As if someone heard my begging, on my 2nd day back the wind kicked in and I had a solid freestyle session back at the hatchery. Though it was a bit up and down for my 4.4 loco, the current was moving fast and the swells were massive, and in spite of not being able to feel my toes or fingers in the 47-degree water, the smile on my face post sesh went from ear to ear.

Just as I was starting to get settled in, it was time to take off yet again and make my way south to Santa Cruz, CA, for the first stop of the American Windsurfing Tour. Ingrid and I packed up the MauiSails van and took off after work on Friday, driving through the night so we could arrive at Waddell in time for the wind to come up on Saturday. So far we’ve had wind everyday, and the fx looks good for the extended, so we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed for epic conditions at the first event of the AWT!

Who am I? I am one of the luckiest people alive! I do a job I love. I work in a different office almost every week with a great view and I get to meet people with the same passion as me. I use state of the art tools and the best test facilities weekly. What do I do? I am a windsurfing instructor and have been teaching for over 30 years. I have been lucky enough to do it for a living (debatable) for 25 years. ABK Boardsports, now my company, it is the way I manage to survive and is my vehicle for teaching the best techniques I know today out on the road. For work, we have sails from the beginner Inspire to the Titan for the students wanting to work on speed, with all models in between allowing our instructors to put the student on the perfect gear.There are so many stories about road life between the epic sailing sessions in less than epic locations, to the interesting people, combined with occasional roadside breakdowns and airport nightmares. I am going to keep MauiSails Monthly and you in the loop.

April brings my return to the U.S. from Bonaire. This past Bonairian winter was very good. ABK taught quite a few students at the Jibe City(now rents MauiSails) school and the clinics were busy. Now it is Texas, the truck and trailer are getting their spring cleaning and the 2012 gear from all the sponsors is arriving at Worldwinds to be loaded for the tour. I have sailed quite a lot in Texas this April, I was even overpowered 4.0 a few days. The Spring in Texas is almost always warm and windy and I look forward to coming every year.

Both Corpus Christi and South Padre Island have shallow bays and ocean sailing plus Corpus has a bump and jump area in the city. These places are bustling with windsurfers. Yesterday I sailed at the “Flats” in SPI and there were at least 75 windsurfing vehicles there on the worst forecast day for the week (15-20 mph, 81 degrees F). It is a nice feeling to see so many cars, SUVs, and truck sporting gear in town. In the Corpus area on a windy spring day you will never sail alone. There will be 100 people at Bird Island, ten people in the Gulf and basically ten sailors at every launch spot in the area (and there are a lot of spots).

Last year I became addicted to SUP wave windsurfing and I have continued this passion over the winter in Bonaire in the Lac Bay mouth and now in South Padre Island at the Isla Verde Park and in Padre Island (Corpus Christi) at Packery Channel.

I use my Loco 6.0 (although there are better sails from MauiSails for this) and go out in 10-15 mph and catch every wave I want. It is so fun, easy, and addicting. I recommend this to everyone whom wants to get out in the waves for the first time and or lives in a lighter wind area with surf. I have used the SUP (Fanatic Fly) sailing in waves up to logo high and in pretty strong wind and still have had lots of fun. I believe that SUP sailing really can help grow windsurfing as it will get more people out in less wind (common problem = “less wind”) and ocean sailing exposes more people to watch. There are many wave spots in the US that blow 10 -15 often but rarely more. The floaty board and light small sails give you the chance to maximize those waves. “Everything is big in Texas” and windsurfing is no exception. The Bays are massive. The beaches can be huge. Every where you go there are large numbers of people windsurfing. For the month of May I head to the east coast so maybe I will see you there.

The circus always comes to town during April on Maui in the form of photoshoot month. Driving by Hookipa and seeing 80 sails off the point certainly gives the impression that windsurfing is alive and kicking.

It’s always nice to see much of our team on island at the same time. It’s an excellent time to get everyones comments on the new sails and also to spend some time on the water with them. I had some fun Hookipa sessions together with Camille, Micah, Ferdinando and Casey while Bogo worked hard to capture some action photos. It was also very productive having Taty on island and getting his feedback on the new Loco’s. It was great to see him immediately put his new 5.2 to good use finishing 2nd at Podersdorf.

The loft has been bustling with riders and visitors coming and going and we have all been very busy between design work, rider meetings, photo sessions, media articles, re-cuts and repairs. The excitement eventually clears and we all return to our day to day development work, fine tuning the 2013 wave lines. More details on that next month.

April is tax month. Days pass and you get closer to the deadline, then combine that with shifting a house full of stuff, a collection of other gear, and a 96 year old mother 2500 miles... wow is all I can say. And somehow still there was a photo shoot, lots of team activity, tons of sail repairs (photo shoots are really hard on the gear). Those wild and crazy guys and gals love to give their all when the camera is in the water, and often the result of getting that crazy hot shot is wreckage. Fortunately we have a good sailmaker/repair guy who can make them look almost like new (me), and the show goes on.

Want to test something for endurance? Give it to Camille!I love the energy when the enthusiastic young guys get together and start raving about conditions, moves, new ideas, how the stuff works for them, and the buzz on the beach. Even with all the taxing and shifting and changing things, the constant is

still in the excitement. Windsurfing... the wild sport with no rules. Sure there are ’rules’ for the contests, but the gear for the reality of the enjoyment is still unbound by any rule except form and function. The evolution has just begun.

Cornelia had to sit and wait this month, except for some work on a new sailbag for the big genoa and the tubes for the dodger. She was the respite for all the moving, a short break for a peaceful daysail in perfect Lahaina conditions. Then the move from San Francisco finished off the month. There’s a good shot of Mom enjoying the Bay on a friend’s Beneteau 47, charging along in 20-25, a good chance to be the oldest sailor on the bay on Opening Day.

A fantastic month on Maui for wind and waves. Actually the month was one big blurrrrrr. Sailing, testing, working, Bogo was here so we were busy shooting and doing video’s.

Starting to get tuned up on the TR78’s and they are feeling so good around the race course. Been setting bouys and getting in some serious training here on Maui with Micah. Anyone want to join us, please come and enjoy the action of Kanaha before race season begins soon.

Not much more I can remember except spending time on the new sails and really enjoying the progress we have made, looking forward to the race season and continued feedback from our customers.
