Math practice #6Attend to PrecisionQC2

Write down questions, comments, and/or concerns on a post-it note and place it here for discussion later. Time: 2 minutes/2 minutes

Prep: Have post-it notes at tables. 2Time to ReviewObjective: To correctly identify math practices #1-5.

Directions:Sort the words to create each of the five math practices and glue them to the paper.Once all five math practices are created, you must summarize what the practice means in two sentences or less on the poster.

Time: 25 minutes/27 minutes

Prep: Have the words to each of the first 5 math practices typed and mixed in cards. Poster paper, cards, markers, and glue sticks will be needed at each table.

Explain the game to the groups. Group members are not allowed to use their notes, but are allowed to talk through it together. Explain to participants that they will be presenting their ideas at the end. Allow groups 15 minutes of work time to complete the task.Once time is up, ask one member from each group to briefly present what was easy and/or difficult about this task. Which practice was easiest? Hardest?

3Are your students Hirable?Do they have the needed skills?

Time: 20 minutes/47 minutes

Prep: Copies of Forbes article, The 10 Skills That Will Get You Hired In 2013

Allow participants a few minutes to read the first 2 pages of the article. Instruct them to stop when they get to the list of the 10 most critical job skills. After everyone has had enough time to read, discuss highlights of the article.

Ask groups to go down the list of the top ten skills needed in the work force and highlight the ones that relate to the math practices discussed thus far. Review these lists as a whole group. Finally, ask participants to reflect on the activity we just completed, (reviewing the first 5 math practices), and ask if any of the top ten skills were utilized in the activity. Discuss thoughts. 4Why is math so complicated?

Time: 13 minutes/1 hour

Prep: Embed the video need here. (3 Stooges and/or Abbot and Castello)

Explain to the group that they will be watching a video of math instruction on simple multiplication.Play video.Discuss what was observed in the video. Ask the following questions:What math terms apply in this situation? In what ways did the characters try to prove the math? What would have been a more efficient strategy? How did they show the meaning of quantities? What symbols were important in this situation? What math language, definitions, and/or properties did you hear in the explanations?Explain to the participants this video brings us into Math Practice #6.5Math practice #6

Attend to precision.Time: 15 minutes/1 hour 15 minutes

Prep: Copies of CCSS math practice #6

Pass out a copy of math practice #6.Have participants read the explanation making sure to highlight key features that stand out to them. Have a general discussion about what this practice looks like and sounds like in a Common Core math classroom. Ask how this practice is found in our current framework and classrooms.6Investigating MP #6Ensure you attend to precision throughout the task!

10 minutes to read, work, and prepare poster on your task.Poster swap5 minutes to read over previous groups material.Group presentationsTime: 45 minutes/2 hours

Prep: Have task cards prepared and ready. Each group will need a poster paper and markers.

Explain to the participants that each group will now be given a math problem to discus, work though, and prepare for a presentation. Allow one person form each group to come choose a task. Inform groups that they will have ten minutes to figure out the solution to their problem and write out their justification on their poster board. Allow groups time to work. When ten minutes is up, explain to the participants that they will now randomly switch problems and papers with another group, and that they will be responsible for presenting the other groups ideas, thoughts, and solutions. Switch problems and work between groups.Allow each group another 5 minutes to review over the problem and work of their new task. Randomly call up one group at a time to present.7What was difficult? The Sharing Method

Time: 10 minutes/2 hours 10 minutes

Prep: NA

Discuss with the participants what made this task difficult? What would have made it easier? How did having to present another groups ideas relate back to attending to precision? What would your group do differently next time?8Another example

Would attending to precision help with this?Time: 15 minutes/2 hours 25 minutes

Prep: Embed video (Abbot and Castello or the 3 Stooges)

Explain to the group that they will be watching one more video of math instruction.Play video.Discuss what was observed in the video. Ask the following questions:What math terms apply in this situation? In what ways did the characters try to prove the math? What would have been a more efficient strategy? How did they show the meaning of quantities? What symbols were important in this situation? What math language, definitions, and/or properties did you hear in the explanations? In which ways could the math practices benefit the overall understanding?9QC2Next Meeting March
